| body | Hey there, I'm just a voice who would rather make an impact with depth rather than volume. _(and that's why I'm writing a text-based article, very clever __{ Yes, I really like being meta}__)_ This essay/ article isn't meant for the moderate conservatives(not referring to American political landscape), rather for those who are looking for a good articulation of why their arguments feel off and not really agreeable. _(nope ? just me ? damn human, make up your mind, whose side you on ?)_ To do this I'm gonna take the perfect example the video of ["School of Life"](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7IcJI8PUf5Z3zKxnZvTBog), the youtube channel with 2.9 M subs. Another Great video has been already made by [CoffeeBreak](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9WQRw8jgJhag-vkDNTDMRg) ( definitely a channel the reader should check out) calling out the hypocrisy of their content, putting a voice which instantly generates sympathy and legitimacy to the audience. ### Sorry for the huge intro, here starts the fun. ### In their(School of life) video, titled ["Why Religious Beliefs Aren't Just Silly"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLj4iwa0__8), they have a serious misunderstanding of the atheist worldview. while making this video I thought this fallacy would be quite obvious but "alas coming from eastern schooling system the wold never stops to surprise me with the constant growth of stupidity" was the feeling I got while reading the comment on the video, now to talk on the video itself: To quote the video. >From a distance, it can all seem very silly. >These people have gone to Lourdes, in the foothills of the Pyrenees, in the hope that the Virgin Mary might cure them of cancer and heart disease. >These people have gone to Medjugorje in Bosnia Herzegovina, to pray they might get a chance to talk to dead beloved relatives. >And these people are praying at the Western Wailing Wall of the old Jewish Temple in Jerusalem and leaving all sort of notes for God to read in the cracks between the stones. >No wonder some Atheists just think the whole of religion is ludicrous, Yes obviously, completely agreed But it wouldn't be much of a rebuttal if I agreed completely _(LOL)_ I mean yes this does look silly no doubt but this is sinister too. Resorting to false hopes to cure cancer, is depressingly sad, only the people who still have the will to live would want to pray for their lives, what would you _(you the reader)_ rather do to them, give them false hopes or ask them to live their remainder of lives as much as they could ? And talking about the part where they would want to talk to your dead relatives, weren't they the ones who believe in hell and heaven? So shouldn't you let them move on to their afterlife which is free of sorrow and pain? Let them not be stuck in your sadness, if you truly love them you know what to do. >What religion teaches us isn't about what's true, >but about what many of us here on earth desperately want to be true, >for some pretty understandable reasons. Here in lies my problem(amongst many others), we live in times where we know the fundamental law of physics right down to quarks, we know what happened at the very beginning of time(if we can call it that) up to 10^-38 seconds after the BigBang, how long shall we live with burden emotional weakness and hide under the veil of intellectual impotency ? >At one point in the Bible ([Mark 5:36](https://www.lds.org/manual/new-testament-stories/chapter-24-jairuss-daughter-is-raised-from-the-dead?lang=eng)), Jesus goes into the house of a man called Jarus, whose 12-year-old daughter has just died. >Everyone is weeping and lamenting. But Jesus calmly says that she's not dead, she's just asleep. >"Little girl, I say to you get up!" Jesus says. >We shouldn't laugh or dismiss the whole thing as nonsense. Yes, we shouldn't, but neither should we rely on the supernatural on a very natural phenomenon. The sufferers of such horrible pain should be cared for and given appropriate help and sympathy. If we don't, we not only are contributing to a person's deteriorating mental health but also disrespecting the memory of the diseased. >Science may very rightly deny the existence of the Virgin Mary, let alone paradise and miracles. But these beliefs shouldn't just be interpreted as pieces of stupidity. Oh yes, they should be. Especially when the religious apologetics claim Science and Religion can co-exist. What many people don't understand is that science has nothing to do with religion, science only has a problem when religion claims things which are known to be false ((beautifully said by [Cosmic Skeptic](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V616hll2iC8)). Now being secular and being open to other, often conflicting ideas is something the community holds in high regards, but with religious teachings, the opposite happens. Let me Elaborate One shouldn't be secular to a person who themselves aren't secular. Both the interlocuters come in with different goals, one is open to the idea of changing his mind and the other is not. In the specific case of religious teachings, this is especially true as these teachings are taught to the small children when they have blind trust on what they are taught and they hold those beliefs as absolute truth, and the crushing of these beliefs can be really hard and one might stay in phrases of denial and questioning for extended periods of time. >Religious beliefs are, of course, technically false. But they're coming from a very tender and vulnerable place, which needs our empathy. >Of course, Atheists are technically right. But there's no point getting maddened by the apparent irrationality of the religious. Life is not a debate, there are far too many things which we being _technically_ correct hardly matters, we are least bothered >We have to understand it and appreciate the intensity of the longings that lead some of us to believe in fantasies against all odds. >Because reality is just sometimes unbearably painful. Yes, we do we are saying let's do it the more meaningful way, which is closer to reality in which you wouldn't need to doubt yourself in every action. In which you know your actions are consistent with the universe and a place where you don't need faith and you just know. _This was my first article, any sort of feedback is welcomed (regarding length, technicality, grammar dialogue). Lemme know what kinds of topics you'd want me to cover. There's also another video by school of life, on the similar subjects and also TED talks by Alain de Botton (CEO/President/something of School of life), lemme know if yould like to see more such content. "body": "Hey there, I'm just a voice who would rather make an impact with depth rather than volume.\n_(and that's why I'm writing a text-based article, very clever __{ Yes, I really like being meta}__)_\n\nThis essay/ article isn't meant for the moderate conservatives(not referring to American political landscape), rather for those who are looking for a good articulation of why their arguments feel off and not really agreeable. _(nope ? just me ? damn human, make up your mind, whose side you on ?)_\n \nTo do this I'm gonna take the perfect example the video of [\"School of Life\"](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7IcJI8PUf5Z3zKxnZvTBog), the youtube channel with 2.9 M subs.\nAnother Great video has been already made by [CoffeeBreak](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9WQRw8jgJhag-vkDNTDMRg) ( definitely a channel the reader should check out) calling out the hypocrisy of their content, putting a voice which instantly generates sympathy and legitimacy to the audience. \n\n### Sorry for the huge intro, here starts the fun. ###\n\n\nIn their(School of life) video, titled [\"Why Religious Beliefs Aren't Just Silly\"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLj4iwa0__8), they have a serious misunderstanding of the atheist worldview. while making this video I thought this fallacy would be quite obvious but \"alas coming from eastern schooling system the wold never stops to surprise me with the constant growth of stupidity\" was the feeling I got while reading the comment on the video, now to talk on the video itself:\nTo quote the video.\n>From a distance, it can all seem very silly.\n>These people have gone to Lourdes, in the foothills of the Pyrenees, in the hope that the Virgin Mary might cure them of cancer and heart disease.\n>These people have gone to Medjugorje in Bosnia Herzegovina, to pray they might get a chance to talk to dead beloved relatives.\n>And these people are praying at the Western Wailing Wall of the old Jewish Temple in Jerusalem\nand leaving all sort of notes for God to read in the cracks between the stones.\n>No wonder some Atheists just think the whole of religion is ludicrous,\n\nYes obviously, completely agreed\n\nBut it wouldn't be much of a rebuttal if I agreed completely _(LOL)_\nI mean yes this does look silly no doubt but this is sinister too. Resorting to false hopes to cure cancer, is depressingly sad, only the people who still have the will to live would want to pray for their lives, what would you _(you the reader)_ rather do to them, give them false hopes or ask them to live their remainder of lives as much as they could ?\nAnd talking about the part where they would want to talk to your dead relatives, weren't they the ones who believe in hell and heaven? So shouldn't you let them move on to their afterlife which is free of sorrow and pain? Let them not be stuck in your sadness, if you truly love them you know what to do.\n\n>What religion teaches us isn't about what's true,\n>but about what many of us here on earth desperately want to be true,\n>for some pretty understandable reasons.\n\nHere in lies my problem(amongst many others), we live in times where we know the fundamental law of physics right down to quarks, we know what happened at the very beginning of time(if we can call it that) up to 10^-38 seconds after the BigBang, how long shall we live with burden emotional weakness and hide under the veil of intellectual impotency ?\n\n>At one point in the Bible ([Mark 5:36](https://www.lds.org/manual/new-testament-stories/chapter-24-jairuss-daughter-is-raised-from-the-dead?lang=eng)), Jesus goes into the house of a man called Jarus, whose 12-year-old daughter has just died.\n>Everyone is weeping and lamenting. But Jesus calmly says that she's not dead, she's just asleep.\n>\"Little girl, I say to you get up!\" Jesus says.\n>We shouldn't laugh or dismiss the whole thing as nonsense.\n\nYes, we shouldn't, but neither should we rely on the supernatural on a very natural phenomenon. The sufferers of such horrible pain should be cared for and given appropriate help and sympathy. \nIf we don't, we not only are contributing to a person's deteriorating mental health but also disrespecting the memory of the diseased.\n\n>Science may very rightly deny the existence of the Virgin Mary, let alone paradise and miracles. But these beliefs shouldn't just be interpreted as pieces of stupidity.\n\nOh yes, they should be. Especially when the religious apologetics claim Science and Religion can co-exist. \nWhat many people don't understand is that science has nothing to do with religion, science only has a problem when religion claims things which are known to be false ((beautifully said by [Cosmic Skeptic](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V616hll2iC8)). Now being secular and being open to other, often conflicting ideas is something the community holds in high regards, but with religious teachings, the opposite happens. Let me Elaborate\n\nOne shouldn't be secular to a person who themselves aren't secular. Both the interlocuters come in with different goals, one is open to the idea of changing his mind and the other is not. In the specific case of religious teachings, this is especially true as these teachings are taught to the small children when they have blind trust on what they are taught and they hold those beliefs as absolute truth, and the crushing of these beliefs can be really hard and one might stay in phrases of denial and questioning for extended periods of time.\n\n>Religious beliefs are, of course, technically false. But they're coming from a very tender and vulnerable place, which needs our empathy.\n>Of course, Atheists are technically right. But there's no point getting maddened by the apparent irrationality of the religious.\n\nLife is not a debate, there are far too many things which we being _technically_ correct hardly matters, we are least bothered\n\n>We have to understand it and appreciate the intensity of the longings that lead some of us to believe in fantasies against all odds.\n>Because reality is just sometimes unbearably painful.\n\nYes, we do we are saying let's do it the more meaningful way, which is closer to reality in which you wouldn't need to doubt yourself in every action. In which you know your actions are consistent with the universe and a place where you don't need faith and you just know.\n\n\n\n_This was my first article, any sort of feedback is welcomed (regarding length, technicality, grammar dialogue). Lemme know what kinds of topics you'd want me to cover. There's also another video by school of life, on the similar subjects and also TED talks by Alain de Botton (CEO/President/something of School of life), lemme know if yould like to see more such content.\nNew to this platform.
