      "body": "Massive solar storm slamming into Earth could cause power outages and stunning views of the Northern Lights\n\nTwo gigantic solar flares erupting from the sun have been recorded by NASA.\nThe space agency has said the resulting solar storm could strike Earth tomorrow and may disrupt satellites and cause power outages in some places.\n\nHowever, the charged particles that make up the solar storm could create stunning views of the Northern Lights as they interact with our atmosphere.\n\nTiming is a crucial factor.\n\nThe arrival of the solar storm coincides with the formation of 'equinox cracks' in Earth's magnetic field, which form around the equinoxes on March 20 and September 23 each year.\n\nIt could mean technology such as GPS satellites are more susceptible to the incoming magnetic particles.\n\n\"A minor geomagnetic storm watch is now in effect for the 14 and 15 March, 2018. Aurora may be visible at high latitudes,\" the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) wrote in a statement.\n\nThe particles, which came from the sun after solar flares took place on March 6 and 7, could cause 'weak power grid fluctuations' and a \"minor impact on satellite operations,\" according to the NOAA.\n\nNASA said the first of the two flares - classified in the potent X class and facing directly at the Earth - was the biggest this year.\n\nForecasters are only able to predict large storms, which can cause huge power outages and disrupt our communications systems, just 19 hours ahead. \n\nSpace weather is caused by the behaviour of the sun and can occur in the form of radiation storms, solar flares and, the one to worry about, coronal mass ejections - which sends scores of solar material into space, and sometimes hurtling towards Earth.\n\nThese all modify the Earth's atmosphere and magnetic field, affecting our technology, satellites and disrupting our power supply - potentially leaving large areas of the world paralysed.\nThe Northern Lights will be occurring to the north of the UK, so make sure you have a good view of the northern horizon.\n\nQuite often, going to beaches, headlands or the top of hills is very good, but if can get to somewhere in Scotland, even the Shetland Isles, then that would be the best bet.![BBKarSu.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmUG5RLWyvhN9Nse1nQd2ktR9JUkmcZLANPq4kJvp1sWBp/BBKarSu.jpg)",

      "body": "A former student opened fire at a Florida high school Wednesday, killing at least 17 people, sending students running out into the streets and SWAT team members swarming in before authorities took him into custody about a mile away.\n\nSheriff Scott Israel identified the suspect as Nikolas Cruz, 19. A law enforcement source briefed on the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School said the suspect appears to have pulled the school fire alarm, causing chaos, and then started shooting, reports CBS News senior investigative producer Pat Milton.\n\nCBS News' Jeff Pegues reports the suspect had a AR-15-style weapon with multiple magazines on his person. Sources say that authorities are rushing to trace this weapon and its origin and how Cruz obtained it. Pegues says it well help investigators determine a timeline leading up to the attack.\n\nPreviously, Israel had said the shooter was a former student. He said the shooter was outside and inside the school at points during the attack, and taken into custody \"without incident\" about an hour after he left the school. Israel said police were waiting for the SWAT team to give them the all-clear so that they could go inside the school.\n\nA male that fit the description of the suspect was seen being taken into custody, CBS News' Jeff Pegues reports. He was later transported to the hospital and seen being wheeled into the facility on a gurney.\n\nBroward County Schools superintendent Robert Runcie said there were numerous fatalities, but couldn't confirm the number. He called it a \"horrific situation.\"\n\nFormer classmate Eddie Bonilla told CBS Miami he knew Cruz before he got kicked out of school.\n\n\"He got kicked out of school last year,\" said Bonilla. \"He always had guns on him and stuff like that.\"\n\nHe said he was not surprised by the arrest.\n\n\"Honestly a lot of people a lot of people were saying it was going to be him,\" Bonilla said. \"We actually, a lot of kids threw jokes around Ike that, saying that he's the one to shoot up the school, but it turns out everyone predicted it. It's crazy.\"\n\nAlex Azar told CBS Miami he remembers Cruz too.\n\n\"He always seemed like the unstable type, the type who would do this sort of thing,\" Azar remembers. \"He was always in the office. He was always in trouble, very unstable.       "body": "A link between highly processed foods and cancer has been suggested by French researchers.\n![_100039253_gettyimages-75376913.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmSYSUWEX2HSQZ83GC5xExska55zXhDch9oiyBraUpkDjJ/_100039253_gettyimages-75376913.jpg)They classified foods including cakes, chicken nuggets and mass-produced bread as \"ultra-processed\".\n\nA study of 105,000 people hinted the more of such foods people ate, the greater their risk of cancer.\n\nA lot of caution is being expressed about the study, but experts said a healthy diet is best.\n\nWhat counts as ultra-processed\nMass-produced packaged breads and buns\nSweet or savoury packaged snacks including crisps\nChocolate bars and sweets\nSodas and sweetened drinks\nMeatballs, poultry and fish nuggets\nInstant noodles and soups\nFrozen or shelf-life ready meals\nFoods made mostly or entirely from sugar, oils and fats\nDiet is already known to affect the risk of cancer.\n\nBeing overweight is the biggest preventable cause of the disease after smoking and the World Health Organization says processed meat does slightly increase the risk of cancer.\n\nBut what about ultra-processed foods?\n\nThe team - at Universite Sorbonne Paris Cite - used food surveys on two days to work out what people were eating.\n\nThose on the study, who were mostly middle-aged women, were followed for an average of five years.\n\nThe results, in the British Medical Journal, showed that if the proportion of ultra-processed food in the diet increased by 10%, then the number of cancers detected increased by 12%.\n\nDuring the study:\n\nOn average, 18% of people's diet was ultra-processed\nOn average, there were 79 cancers per 10,000 people each year\nUpping the proportion of processed food by 10% would lead to nine extra cancers per 10,000 people per year\nThe researchers concluded: \"These results suggest that the rapidly increasing consumption of ultra-processed foods may drive an increasing burden of cancer in the next decades.\"\n\nBut they said the findings need to \"be confirmed by other large-scale\" studies and research was needed to establish what could be behind the link.\n\nA 'warning signal'\nThis study is far from the definitive take on ultra-processed foods and cancer.\n\nIt cannot say ultra-processed foods are a cause of cancer.\n\nThere are also factors that muddy the waters as people who ate a lot of ultra-processed foods had other behaviours that have been linked to cancer.\n\nThey were much more likely to smoke, were less active, consumed more calories overall and were more likely to be taking the oral contraceptive.\n\nWhile the researchers did adjust their analysis for this they say their impact \"cannot be entirely excluded\".\n\nProf Linda Bauld, Cancer Research UK's prevention expert, said: \"It's already known that eating a lot of these foods can lead to weight gain, and being overweight or obese can also increase your risk of cancer, so it's hard to disentangle the effects of diet and weight.\"",

The two companies said they would begin trial services in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Fukuoka within the year.\n\nDidi, which is already working with Daiichi Taxi Co. on a way to allow Chinese tourists to use its app in Japan, plans to work with multiple taxi companies, according to two people familiar with the matter. The Chinese ride-hailing firm will name three members of the joint venture’s management team, including the chief executive, one of them said.\n\n\nSoftBank, which arranged Didi’s partnership with Daiichi Taxi, is the biggest investor in Uber, having invested $7.7 billion last month to take a 15% stake. The Japanese conglomerate has also sunk more than $9 billion into Didi.\n\nSoftBank believes Didi is in a better position than Uber in Japan because of the large number of existing Didi users visiting the country, according to a person familiar with SoftBank Chief Executive Masayoshi Son’s thinking. Transport Ministry officials have welcomed Didi’s partnership with Daiichi Taxi, saying it will improve services to Chinese visitors and help cut demand for unauthorized Chinese ride-hailing apps in Japan.\n\nJapan’s large fleets of taxis and generally high-quality service and dense public transportation networks have flummoxed Uber. But it’s an engrossing and important subject – which was raised by a man who challenged patriarchal taboos with a candour and determination that many men all over the progressive world might shrink from even now.\n\nTwenty years ago, Arunachalam Muruganantham was a metalworker who thought it lamentable that his wife Shanthi and all the women in his community had to rely on dirty rags when they got their periods because sanitary pads were absurdly overpriced. So he did something about it, developing a low-cost machine for making the pads and evangelising for their use all across the country, instituting a revolution in feminine hygiene, ending the toxic masculine culture of silence and disapproval and introducing a vernacular culture of social entrepreneurship.\n\nAkshay Kumar plays the hero (renamed Lakshmi) and Radhika Apte is his troubled wife (renamed Gayatri).
