titleWorld's Top-Ranked Crypto Exchange Adds 240,000 Users in One Hour
body![23584102_10155167717567615_1815997961_o.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmUXrvkMPbPy6ew2RnzGoCgivU5ggik8VLzdjfjaLepN4Q/23584102_10155167717567615_1815997961_o.png) The world’s biggest cryptocurrency exchange keeps getting bigger. Hong Kong-based Binance.com is adding “a couple of million” registered users every week, with 240,000 people signing up in just an hour on Wednesday, Chief Executive Officer Zhao Changpeng said in an interview with Bloomberg Television. Demand is so high that the company is limiting new customers, he said, though Binance may fully reopen in the coming weeks. “We did not expect this kind of growth to be honest,” Zhao said from Tokyo on Thursday. Binance was the world’s most active crypto exchange over the past 24 hours, according to Coinmarketcap.com, hosting $6 billion worth of digital currency trades. The most popular asset was Tron, which accounted for 11 percent of volume. Zhao said his average customer was male and aged 25-35, though Binance is “beginning to get a lot of interest from institutional investors.” Professional money has largely shunned the frenzy accompanying cryptocurrencies, with Warren Buffett becoming the latest name from the world of high finance to voice doubts, saying on Wednesday that “they will come to a bad ending.” Zhao said he was unfazed by the comments. “Warren Buffett is a guy I truly respect from an investment point of view,” he said. “But I do not think he understands cryptocurrencies at all. It is what it is. I still respect him in other parts of his expertise. But I think on cryptocurrencies he’s making a big mistake.” Server Limit Traffic on Binance has been so high that the company hits the limit of servers per account permitted by its cloud provider Amazon.com Inc. “every day,” Zhao said. Amazon Web Services is the world’s biggest provider of cloud computing services, powering large companies such as Netflix Inc. “We have a guy whose full-time job is just requesting servers,” he said. “Every day they say, ‘OK, here are 200 more,’ but we just ask for more.” Representatives from Amazon didn’t immediately reply to a request for comment. Zhao also said that his company is working to receive an exchange license from Japan’s Financial Services Agency. The country passed comprehensive cryptocurrency regulation that included oversight of exchanges in April, and has issued 16 licenses to date. “Japan is the most progressive country in the world in terms of regulations,” he said.

titleWarren Buffett says cryptocurrencies 'will come to bad end'

Buffett’s comments were backed by Charlie Munger, his longtime partner at his investment company Berkshire Hathaway, who described the soaring values of Bitcoin and the other cryptocurrencies as “bubbles”. Munger said investors “are excited because things are going up at the moment and it sounds vaguely modern. But I’m not excited.” Munger has been a persistent critic of cryptocurrencies, which have soared in value in recent months. Last year he said the soaring values of the currencies was “total insanity”. He told an audience at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business: “I think it is perfectly asinine to even pause to think about them. It’s bad people, crazy bubble, bad idea, luring people into the concept of easy wealth without much insight or work.” Buffett’s comments came as the 87-year-old announced he had appointed two potential successors: Gregory Abel, the chief executive of Berkshire Hathaway Energy, and Ajit Jain, Berkshire’s reinsurance chief. The critique from two of the world’s most successful investors comes as more companies are piling into cryptocurrencies. On Tuesday Kodak announced that it would launch its own cryptocurrency, KodakCoin, in a move that doubled the struggling company’s share price. Kodak, which emerged from bankruptcy in 2012 and has struggled to regain its footing ever since, said the move would allow photographers payment for licensing their work using KodakCoin. The cryptocurrency halo has been good for other companies too. Last month, shares in a tiny US soft drinks company quadrupled after it changed its name from Long Island Iced Tea Corp to Long Blockchain Corporation – referencing the ledger technology upon which bitcoin and other cryptocurrency transactions are based. The company said it planned to raise $8.4m in a stock offering and use some of the cash to invest in bitcoin mining machines. This week it announced it is scrapping the stock sale but still plans to buy the machines. However, it did not specify how it would pay for them.

titleBrexit: Nigel Farage says 'maybe' there should be a second referendum on EU membership
bodyreferendum.![nigel-farage-14-june-2017.jpeg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmQCrqUs5hiZNXUHqzfcQmgzijUm7Z2WPz3F4h2B9vHJzF/nigel-farage-14-june-2017.jpeg) Nigel Farage has said it may be time to hold a second referendum on Brexit to put an end to the “moaning” of politicians who have not accepted the previous vote. The ex-Ukip leader argued that leading political figures who have been arguing against Brexit would “never, ever, ever” stop fighting it and so the best way to draw a line under the issue could be a second public vote. Mr Farage is seen as one the architect of Brexit and has been the most vociferous critic of people like ex-prime minister Tony Blair and Andrew Adonis who have suggested it could be undone. Speaking on Channel 5’s The Wright Stuff, Mr Farage: “What is for certain is that the Cleggs, the Blairs, the Adonises will never, ever, ever give up. “They will go on whinging and whining and moaning all the way through this process. “So maybe – just maybe – I’m reaching the point of thinking that we should have a second referendum on EU membership.” Until now, all supporters of Brexiteers have unanimously rejected the idea of a further vote saying that it would be a betrayal of “the will of the people”, as set out in the 2016 referendum. But with the Article 50 process already underway, opponents have been pressing for a rethink of Brexit and arguing that the public should have another chance to vote on it once the terms of withdrawal are clear. Mr Farage went on: “If we had a second referendum on EU membership, we’d kill it off for a generation. “The percentage that would vote to leave next time, would be very much bigger than it was last time round and we may just finish the whole thing off.” Mr Blair recently re-issued a call for the public to be given another say on Brexit, while calling on his party and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn to oppose it outright. That was followed up by a call from Lord Adonis in an interview with The Independent for Labour to back a second referendum.

bodyBitcoin’s surge in price has sent its electricity consumption soaring. ![1509563619492-shutterstock_669548110.jpeg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmaS95XgGDbsbTgf8nJDV48jmBeCviHjg8MePTGbUCQCQW/1509563619492-shutterstock_669548110.jpeg) Bitcoin's incredible price run to break over $16,000 last year has sent its overall electricity consumption soaring, as people worldwide bring more energy-hungry computers online to mine the digital currency. An index from cryptocurrency analyst Alex de Vries, aka Digiconomist, estimates that with prices the way they are now, it would be profitable for Bitcoin miners to burn through over 24 terawatt-hours of electricity annually as they compete to solve increasingly difficult cryptographic puzzles to "mine" more Bitcoins. That's about as much as Nigeria, a country of 186 million people, uses in a year. This averages out to a shocking 215 kilowatt-hours (KWh) of juice used by miners for each Bitcoin transaction (there are currently about 300,000 transactions per day). Since the average American household consumes 901 KWh per month, each Bitcoin transfer represents enough energy to run a comfortable house, and everything in it, for nearly a week. On a larger scale, De Vries' index shows that bitcoin miners worldwide could be using enough electricity to at any given time to power about 2.26 million American homes. Expressing Bitcoin's energy use on a per-transaction basis is a useful abstraction. Bitcoin uses x energy in total, and this energy verifies/secures roughly 300k transactions per day. So this measure shows the value we get for all that electricity, since the verified transaction (and our confidence in it) is ultimately the end product. It's worth asking ourselves hard questions about Bitcoin's environmental footprint Since 2015, Bitcoin's electricity consumption has been very high compared to conventional digital payment methods. This is because the dollar price of Bitcoin is directly proportional to the amount of electricity that can profitably be used to mine it. As the price rises, miners add more computing power to chase new Bitcoins and transaction fees. It's impossible to know exactly how much electricity the Bitcoin network uses. But we can run a quick calculation of the minimum energy Bitcoin could be using, assuming that all miners are running the most efficient hardware with no efficiency losses due to waste heat. To do this, we'll use a simple methodology laid out in previous coverage on Motherboard. This would give us a constant total mining draw of just over one gigawatt. That means that, at a minimum, worldwide Bitcoin mining could power the daily needs of 821,940 average American homes. Put another way, global Bitcoin mining represents a minimum of 77KWh of energy consumed per Bitcoin transaction. Even as an unrealistic lower boundary, this figure is high: As senior economist Teunis Brosens from Dutch bank ING wrote, it's enough to power his own home in the Netherlands for nearly two weeks. Digiconomist's less optimistic estimate for per-transaction energy costs now sits at around 215 KWh of electricity. That's more than enough to fill two Tesla batteries, run an efficient fridge/freezer for a full year, or boil 1872 litres of water in a kettle. It's important to remember that de Vries' model isn't exact. It makes assumptions about the economic incentives available to miners at a given price level, and presents a forward-looking prediction for where mining electricity consumption could go. Despite this, it's quite clear that even at the minimum level of 77 KWh per transaction, we have a problem. At 215 KWh, we have an even bigger problem. That problem is carbon emissions. De Vries has come up with some estimates by diving into data made available on a coal-powered Bitcoin mine in Mongolia. He concluded that this single mine is responsible for 8,000 to 13,000 kg CO2 emissions per Bitcoin it mines, and 24,000 - 40,000 kg of CO2 per hour. As Twitter user Matthias Bartosik noted in some similar estimates, the average European car emits 0.1181 kg of CO2 per kilometer driven. So for every hour the Mongolian Bitcoin mine operates, it's responsible for (at least) the CO2 equivalent of over 203,000 car kilometers travelled. As goes the Bitcoin price, so goes its electricity consumption, and therefore its overall carbon emissions. I asked de Vries whether it was possible for Bitcoin to scale its way out of this problem. "Blockchain is inefficient tech by design, as we create trust by building a system based on distrust. If you only trust yourself and a set of rules (the software), then you have to validate everything that happens against these rules yourself. That is the life of a blockchain node," he said via direct message. This gets to the heart of Bitcoin's core innovation, and also its core compromise. In order to achieve a functional, trustworthy decentralized payment system, Bitcoin imposes some very costly inefficiencies on participants, for example voracious electricity consumption and low transaction capacity. Proposed improvements, like SegWit2x, do promise to increase the number of transactions Bitcoin can handle by at least double, and decrease network congestion. But since Bitcoin is thousands of times less efficient per transaction than a credit card network, it will need to get thousands of times better.

titlePossibly UK to shut down popular site BitConnect
bodyIt turns out Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin might have been right to suggest popular Bitcoin investment platform, BitConnect, has been running a Ponzi scheme after all: the UK Registrar of Companies has threatened to shut down the dodgy platform and dissolve its operation. BitConnect has two months to prove “cause to the contrary” until the decision has been formally enforced, according to an official filing on the British Companies House website. Should the company fail to comply with these terms, the government agency will strike off its registration and seize its assets. “Upon dissolution all property and rights vested in, or held in trust for, the company are deemed to be bona vacantia, and accordingly will belong to the crown,” the document reads. Many have speculated that BitConnect likely stashes its funds abroad, though there is no evidence to back this up. While the notice makes no mention of the people behind the shifty Bitcoin investment platform, another filing [PDF] reveals BitConnect was registered by a British man going by the name of Ken Fitzsimmons. According to the same filing, Fitzsimmons holds 75 percent or more of the shares in the company. Curiously, the name of Fitzsimmons doesn’t appear anywhere on Bitconnect’s site – and nobody seems to know what his involvement in the investment platform is. Numerous concerned cryptocurrency enthusiasts have since interpreted this lack of information as suspicious, with one user going as far as reporting BitConnect for illegal activity to the British government. Unfortunately, details about Fitzsimmons continue to remain scarce at this point. Shortly after the UK Companies House strike-off notice began circulating Reddit, the price of BitConnect Cash (BCC) took a dip from $287 to under $230 – though it has since climbed back up to $245. Meanwhile, BitConnect has carried on promoting its platform to new investors. In fact, the company hosted a cheesy suit-and-gown networking event in Thailand on October 28. Despite action-packed program featuring “acrobatic performances, dance and live entertainment,” the keynote offered little insight into the company’s plans for the future and its current financial situation. Following the abrupt disappearance of suspicious Bitcoin investment platform Bitpetite two weeks ago, the cryptocommunity has grown increasingly distrustful of BitConnect, with numerous people calling respected crypto influencers to chime in on the situation with their expertise. Eventually, Ethereum’s Buterin responded to the requests, suggesting the fishy Bitcoin investment site could indeed be running a Ponzi scheme. Say what you will, but this is not a good look for BitConnect and its investors. In the meantime, we have contacted BitConnect to ask whether the company has any intentions to appeal the strike-off notice from the UK Companies House, and will update this piece accordingly if we hear back. Clarification: As pointed out by readers, BitConnect also listed on Companies House’s registrar as BITCONNECT INTERNATIONAL PLC. Neither of the filings – for the PLC or the LTD – mention how BITCONNECT PLC will be affected in the event that Companies House proceeds with BITCONNECT LTD’s removal from the registrar – or how it will affect the company’s operation in the UK. Update: It has been brought to our attention that, in addition to the other two instances in which BitConnect appears on the UK company registrar, BitConnect has also been listed on Companies House as BITCOIN AMR LIMITED. One thing to keep in mind is that, prior to assuming the name BITCOIN AMR LIMITED, the company used to be registered as BITCONNECT PUBLIC LIMITED – not to be mistaken with BITCONNECT LTD. According to the documents, BITCONNECT PUBLIC LIMITED (now BITCOIN AMR LIMITED) and BITCONNECT LTD were two separate entities, registered under two different company numbers: the former was logged under company number 10944876, and the latter – 10278342. BITCONNECT INTERNATIONAL PLC, on the other hand, also has its own company number: 10948031. The filings do not outline what the connection between the three separate companies is – or whether there is one to start with. Looking through the names attached to the companies though. It appears that a person named Le Thi Thannh Huy is involved in both BITCOIN AMR LIMITED as well as BITCONNECT INTERNATIONAL PLC.
