| body | I have worked in two big organizations – IOCL for around a year and NHAI for two and a half years. These three and a half years of my professional life have taught me some of the valuable lessons which I am sharing with you: ### 1. Never settle in your life: When I joined IOCL fresh from college, I used to believe that I will settle for my whole life in this organization. I was an officer-level employee earning good salaries and allowances. I was living in a township with sports facilities, including a gym and swimming pool. It was a good time as I was allotted a 3BHK flat right at the entry-level. But I looked beyond the rosy picture. I was working in the maintenance department, overseeing the projects in Refinery Township. Though I had the authority, I was made to deal with local contractors who showed no professionalism in their work. I found that my growth and learning is limited; therefore, when I got the opportunity to work at NHAI, I took it though I had to pay a huge sum of 3 lakhs as a bond amount. The learning was compensated in NHAI as I was dealing with big infrastructure projects, and meeting top officials from the corporate and government, which gave me a sense of authority too. But after working for a few years, I realized the working environment at NHAI is not very conducive. It was struggling with an improper system, high corruption, incompetent staff, and frequent transfers. I found a way to move out of it and got into IIM Bangalore. I know things might not be rosy in the future too, but I have learned to move on and not “settle down” because that is how you strive to put effort and grow and succeed in your life. ### 2. Don’t constrain your life only to the job: I have seen that people stay late at the office, though it is not required. My manager at IOCL stayed beyond the office hours even if there was no productive work during that time. I had made up my mind not to stay beyond office hours, which helped me in two ways- firstly, I put my best to be as productive during office hours and secondly, I used my post-office hours for personal growth such as workouts, writing, or reading books. I continued the same when I went to NHAI. I avoided coming office on weekends while my other colleagues would arrive for work (or fun) to the office. It allowed me to travel places, study analytics, maintain a healthy relationship with my partner and crack the CAT exam. ### 3. Work smart, not hard: Your time at work matters less than the outcome of your work. I kept the end goal in my mind whenever I approached a task. In IOCL, I knew the contractors would not work unless I have a grip on them, so I checked their bills in great detail. In NHAI, I knew how much to work on my own and how much to delegate to my staff. I worked more to understand things thoroughly, which helped in quickly getting the work done. I developed good relations with my colleagues and seniors, who were ready to help me anytime I got stuck. That is how I was able to extract free time during my office hours which I devoted to personal stuff. ### 4. Maintain good relations: I maintained good relations with everyone in my professional journey. I realized that I spent 50% of my awake time at the office, and it would not be good if I have to go through clashes and arguments in the office. I always took the path to politeness which used to work most of the time. There is no point in shouting at people; if I want to convey a strong message, I used to give it in writing, which kind of acts as a record and therefore more effective. ### 5. Be honest with your work: Despite several opportunities, I never resorted to illegal means. I was always the proponent of the right things and worked as if it were my own company rather than a government organization. I kept intact the ethics and values in which I have grown, keeping the organization supreme. I always believe, “Good things happen to good people” and therefore tried to attract good things by being a good person. |

| body | Yesterday I met a childhood friend I hadn't seen in 11 years since we both went to college for our undergrad studies. But I never imagined meeting him in a situation where I could see him but he couldn't see me. When I met him yesterday, I found that he had lost his vision. He was a bright student in my class who I looked forward to seeing to clear up some of my doubts. In class 11th and 12th, he got admitted to an IIT-JEE coaching centre, where he consistently performed well. Although he did not qualify for JEE due to some reason, he was admitted to one of the best architectural institutes in the state. As I learned from others, he did well at the institute also and was so good at drawing that most of the professors knew him personally and admired his abilities. But God had something else in store for him. He noticed blurriness in his vision at the end of his third year of studies. And it deteriorated so quickly in such a short period that he lost vision in both eyes within a month or so. Yesterday, when his mother recounted how she is dealing with all of this, I could see tears in her eyes. She had tried everything she could think of to make good her son’s vision. They attended an acupuncture specialist in Delhi for 4 years but other than a few short moments of improved vision, it did nothing good. They have spent almost all of their savings on his treatment, but there have not been any positive results. While his family is saving money for the last hope of stem cell treatment, I must admire my friend's determination and willpower. Despite losing everything for what he has worked for his entire life, he has not given up hope. He is studying for the UPSC exam, and his mother is assisting him by teaching him every day. His bravery exemplifies the adage, "Defeat is not defeat unless accepted as a reality in your own mind." I pray to God to give him the strength to fight through all of this and emerge victorious. I continue to believe that a miracle will occur, and he will regain his lost vision. He is a hardworking and courageous person who will definitely achieve what he has set out to achieve in his life. Edit 1: We are running a fundraiser for our friend Vaibhav. Please help by donating during this time of need. https://ketto.org/s?id=rm-642075 |

| body | You wake up late in the morning because you have been partying until 3’O clock at night. You still feel a hangover from last night’s heavy intoxication. You reach out for your phone and see that the girl from the party has accepted your friend request. You start chatting with her until two hours fly by. Having eaten nothing since morning, you order a double cheese burst pizza from the Swiggy app. Then you see a notification that Prajakta Koli added a new comedy video to YouTube. You watch the video until the food arrives. You click from one video to another until you realize that it’s late afternoon and you have the assignment to submit by the end of the day. But as you couldn’t sleep well at night (or morning), you think of starting the assignment after a 30-minute nap. You wake up by the sharp knock at the door. Your friends arrive to ask if you have cigarettes. You smoke with them, and then the discussion goes on about the last night’s party, and another two hours are puffed away amidst smoke and discussions. Now you start worrying about the assignment as you have only two hours before the deadline. You rush in to barely finish the 8-hour assignment in 2 hours, where you expect to get just passing marks. Do you think you can be productive with things going on like the way I described above? Hell, no. Improper sleep, distracting notifications, multitasking, unplanned day, and non-prioritization of tasks impede a productive lifestyle. You need to chime in to recognize these hindrances and slowly pull them far away from your life. If you want not just to barely pass but be a topper in the assignment, make the following productivity hacks ubiquitous to your life: ### # 1: Plan your day It is very vital to plan your day above anything else. With a plan, you will feel more organized, focused, and motivated for hours ahead. Build your to-do list such that your daily tasks are aligned with your long-term objectives. Prioritize the time for the important tasks before you do anything else. ### #2: Get rid of distractions Eliminate all external distractions that you think might pull away your focus and become a hindrance in the way of your productivity. Adopt digital minimalism to improve your productivity. Keep the personal technology away out of reach if you want to concentrate fully on your work. ### #3: Stop multitasking If you think you are more productive when you are chatting and working on the assignment simultaneously, you are wrong. Doing several things at once is a trick we play on ourselves, thinking we’re getting more done. In reality, our productivity goes down by as much as 40%. We don’t actually multitask. We switch-task, rapidly shifting from one thing to another, interrupting ourselves unproductively, and losing time in the process. ### #4: Avoid insufficient sleep Sleep deprivation leads to reduced work performance and productivity. Without adequate sleep, you have more difficulty concentrating, learning, and communicating. You experience memory lapses and a decline in problem-solving abilities. On the other hand, a good night’s sleep boosts your productivity and makes you spend time more efficiently on your work. ### #5: Use The Pomodoro Technique The Pomodoro Technique helps you resist all of those self-interruptions and re-train your brains to focus. Each Pomodoro is dedicated to one task, and each break is a chance to reset and bring your attention back to what you should be working on. This technique can help anyone who feels distracted or overwhelmed to focus on what matters. ### Final words Everyone has the same 24 hours, but some people are able to get more work done in less time. They are more efficient in their task because they have goals and a plan to accomplish their goals. They follow the right approach to managing their day without procrastinating the important tasks close to the deadline. With the above techniques, you can get your work done effectively and efficiently and also be left with sufficient time to enjoy your life. |

Surround yourself with more successful people **Why:** As the saying goes, you are the average of the five people you spend your most time with; it becomes essential to choose the people who surround you for most of the day. While an ambitious, positive person can influence you with his well-organized lifestyle, a negative, drug-addict can derail you from your goal path. Whether you realize it or not, people surrounding you shape your life consciously or unconsciously. Therefore, spend time with those whom you idealize in your life. They might not be the person with the highest bank balance but must be those who are hungry for knowledge and success. **How:** You might be thinking that you can’t afford access to the people whom you idealize in your life. But you need not have them physically present before you. You can buy into their mind, by listening to the interviews of the top thought leaders, entrepreneurs, and experts. You can read books authored by these intellectuals and gain from the underlying concepts. You can learn from their experiences by listening to Podcasts or watching Ted talks. There are innumerable ways to benefit from successful people; you just need to keep your eyes and ears open. ### 2. Plan your day well in advance **Why:** Planning your day beforehand makes you have a razor-sharp focus on your goals without alluding to the world of distractions, inflated by sporadic social media all around. It makes you remain productive throughout the day without wasting time on irrelevant stuff. You can finish off the most procrastinated task if you have planned your day well. Planning makes you stick to the set schedule, and therefore in the process, you build some good, lasting habits. **How:** You must plan for both the short-term and long-term goals. Short-term goals can be for as short a period as a day, while long-term goals can extend for as long as a year. But I don’t suggest micro-management; instead, visualize a bigger picture and try to accomplish as much as possible within the comforts of the available time. What I strongly propose is to have a definite plan having clear and precise goals with a deadline. You can also organize your day by categorizing your tasks into the important-urgent matrix. However, the critical thing is to evaluate the efficacy and completeness of your plan at the end of every day. This is what will keep you on track and inspire you to carry it on for the long term. ### 3. Invest your time pursuing things that challenge you **Why:** Things that are challenging and hard to do bring you out of your comfort zone. It takes you to the learning zone where you explore the new boundaries triggering your growth. A constant challenging habit increases your willpower and, therefore, makes you in the game for a long time. Challenging your body can make you physically fit while indulging in creative stuff can sharpen your mind. Breaching the comfort zone enhances risk adaptability and paves the path for vertical growth, leading to you becoming the best in several spheres of life. **How:** It starts with assessing your current capabilities and then pushing the boundaries in small increments. Don’t try to make big jumps from the beginning because it might make you tired and not play the game for a long time. You can challenge your body by doing an extra km of run or a different set of squats. You can push your limits in whatever you are doing- whether it’s your study or job or even your hobbies. Just try to do things today better than yesterday. This is the mindset which you should live with in everything you do. ### 4. Build good relationships with people **Why:** Although society is moving towards an individualistic world, we are still social beings at heart. We depend upon our society for our several needs; therefore, we can’t afford to live in bad relations with the people in our surroundings. Having a good relationship also helps us in our day-to-day life. Besides, several studies have shown that interactions in a good socially integrated society enhance the individual’s intelligence and longevity. If people around you feel good about you, their collective goodwill will take you much farther in your life. **How:** You can earn people’s respect by respecting their opinions. Understand that everybody’s opinion is shaped by their own unique experiences; therefore, there is the slightest advantage in wasting time arguing over their views. Learn to show gratitude to people. Inspire and motivate people with your words. Try to remain calm and positive before them. Be approachable and always ready to help with their problems. This is how you can gain their trust and develop a long-lasting relationship. ### 5. Detox your mind with positive thoughts **Why:** As it is well known that a man is a slave to his thoughts, harnessing positive thoughts can bring enormous advantages to one’s life. Positive thinking leads to happiness through the secretion of feel-good hormones such as dopamine, serotonin, etc., and reduces stress hormones. Positive thinking has also been proven to lead to creativity and a structured mind. This can help induce productivity in your life. **How:** There are several ways to feed positive thoughts; one of the best ways is meditation. A regular workout also brings positivity to mind. Surrounding positive people and consuming positive content actually culminate in a positive impact on your thoughts. Don’t indulge yourself in negative self-talk. Don’t take stress in your life. Celebrate small wins. This is how you can master positive thinking. |

| body | Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going. – Jim Rohn I have acquired several habits, a few long backs while some very recently. These habits act as a torch-bearer to my life, subconsciously helping me navigate the day in the most fulfilling manner. Based on my life philosophy to lead a balanced life, I have kept my habits allocated across several dimensions- physical, social, intellectual, and productivity. I might not carry on this phenomenal list of habits always but I intend to stick to them for the most part of my life. ### Physical wellness habits **Dedicate some time for workouts daily.** I spend at least 30 mins every day on any physical activity- running, pushups, squats, jumping rope, abs workout, or anything which can draw some sweat on my face. It is a quintessential part of my life. **Conscious of my diet.** I like the hot, spicy, cheesy pizza, but I know where to stop. I eat sweets, processed food, or hotel food only in moderation. I keep a check on my weight, and if I see it increasing, I have no sugar challenge or outside food challenge at my disposal. **Drink enough water throughout the day.** I start my day hydrating with a glass of water (added with Apple Cider Vinegar) and keep sipping water throughout the day. Many people don’t know but being hydrated makes you more energized and active in your work. **Walk deliberately during breaks.** I keep a target of walking 8000 steps every day, and I rarely falter on it. The reason is that every hour or two, I take a walking break for 15 minutes. It is a great way to break off your work as you feel much fresher after having the short walk. **Meditate every single day.** I began meditation very late, but I am grateful that it has now become my habit. My brain has developed a craving for the peace and calmness I feel after a 30 mins meditation session. No doubt, I am experiencing the benefits of meditation in other aspects of my life too. **No smoking. No alcohol. No drugs.** Yes, I neither like the smell of the cigarette nor the taste of the alcohol. Not the high from the drugs too. Instead, I feel much better in my life – sober without a tint of intoxication. ### Social Wellness Habits **Always respect people, irrespective of the position in which they are.** Respect my elders, subordinates, the Uncle next door, the cab driver, or the ragpicker. Every life form, including animals and plants, have emotions, and we should never play with them. **Value relationships.** The relationship is as important a pillar for me as my career and health. Maintaining a healthy relationship with family, friends, colleagues, or even a stranger keeps my life not go off-balance. **Always on time.** I not only respect people but respect their time too. Ask me to meet at 5’O clock, and I will be there before time. I always appreciate people for their punctuality as there is nothing more precious than time. **Be humble.** I know I am among the top few per cent who go to IIT-IIM, but I don’t enjoy boasting about it. I have realized that knowledge and humility are the best combinations that I can’t help but seize. **Always helpful to others.** You will rarely find me not replying to a person who can benefit from my experience and knowledge. I am approached by a lot of people daily, and I take pride in devoting some time to helping them. ### Intellectual Wellness Habits **Plan my day ahead.** If I plan for something, in most likelihood, I do it. It’s as simple as that. I maintain a spreadsheet where all important tasks are planned a week ahead and recorded every day. Every tick in front of the task causes a spike of dopamine in my brain. **Constantly upskill me.** I felt very contented after knowing that we can acquire any new skill by practising it for only 20 hours. Every addition of skill in my portfolio is a boost to my happiness. I can’t help but add more and more skills to my bucket. **Take notes wherever possible.** I have realized our brain can’t hold everything, so I have resorted to making notes to store important, helpful information. I take notes in class while watching videos while listening to a podcast, wherever it’s convenient. **Read a book before sleeping.** I have lately acquired this read-book-before-sleeping habit, but I am absolutely loving it. It’s a twin advantage- it keeps me off the screen and also makes me hinge on thoughtful reading before sleeping. **Journaling my thoughts and experiences.** I am addicted to keeping a record of everything. It feels light to outsource my memory to a bunch of Word files, or blogs, or Quora answers. It also gives clarity to my thoughts and, no doubt, appreciation from the readers. ### Productivity habits **Not a couch potato.** I don’t feel lazy any time during the day. Give me a task, and I will get back to you in the shortest time. I feel utmost satisfaction in being active throughout the day. **Not a social media addict.** I do scroll through the social media newsfeeds, but I am not addicted to it. I use Quora more than Facebook or Instagram, where I spend more time contributing than reading. I can’t engage myself on social media for hours, and I am proud of it. **Don’t spend money on useless stuff.** I am not an impulsive buyer. No marketing campaign can influence my buying habits; I don’t even look at the coupons they keep sending over emails and messages. I know when I need something and go buying only that specific stuff. **Minimalism.** I can survive with the most basic things because I don’t keep hoarding things I don’t need. It helps me to remain organized without spending a lot of time deliberately doing it. A clutter-free space keeps my mind organized, and ready to absorb the good things. ### Final thoughts Habits are the most powerful in triggering a life-changing impact. It is therefore important to strive for building good habits and breaking bad habits. A perpetual effort to imbibe good habits can accelerate your success journey. |
