| title | Numoney Initial Exchange Offering (IEO) |
| body | Numoney is a retail store located near Buangkok MRT station. They offer over the counter (OTC) services for purchase of cryptocurrency and now they are looking to start their own online exchange (a hybrid of Gemini & Binance). They are looking to raise funds through Initial Exchange Offering to kick start the liquidity of the exchange. Numoney is started by a group of Singaporeans who saw the problems in the cryptocurrency scene in Singapore and South East Asia. Started in November 2017, in a span of four months, the turnover of the company crossed S$2.5million, highlighting the demand for cryptocurrency in the South East Asia market. This significant turnover has resulted in the flagging of their bank account due to multiple deposits and withdrawal. In the long run, OTC services became unsustainable in the developers' view. This problem that Numoney faces is not unique to them alone. Banks have not been very appreciative of cryptocurrency start ups despite DPM Tharman approving of cryptocurrency in our tiny red dot. [http://www.straitstimes.com/business/companies-markets/tharman-no-strong-case-yet-to-ban-cryptocurrency-trading-in-spore] For example, locally, Coinhako's bank account was shut down and they are now relying on Xfers for bank transfers. However, Xfers has been down since mid December for system upgrading. They recently opened up transaction for a select group of members to trial the upgraded system. Xfers grew so quickly over the past months that they are now required to apply for a new license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore as their funds has reached close to S$30million. This further highlights how large the demand for cryptocurrency is in Singapore, considering that Xfers main purpose is for the purchase of cryptocurrency through their digital goods wallet. With no clear reopening date for Xfers, there is a pressing need for a new solution to fixed the current problem in our local cryptocurrency scene. You may argue that there are other US based exchange like Coinbase and Gemini. But there are inherent flaws to these solutions. Primarily, the main issue with Coinbase is the cost. As of now, because Xfers is down, you can only use credit card to make purchase. The credit card fee is 3.99% including a 2.6% bank charge. As such, any purchase would set you back by almost 7%. Also, due to the large backlog of support tickets, Coinbase takes ages to reply a support ticket, so it could take a long time for problems to be fixed. They also do not have live support. Gemini, although offers a way lower fee of 0.25%, you are required to get yourself verified (a requirement under US law, also known as KYC - Knowing Your Customer). The verification process can take up to a month. Personally, it took 21 days to get myself verified. After getting yourself verified, you will need to do a remittance transfer over to Gemini's bank and that will take one working day. However, there are instances where customers follow the right instruction given by Gemini, but the funds are still refunded by Gemini's bank. In this instance, you are required to pay for the forex fees which could be about 1 to 2% of your total transferred amount. In the worst case scenerio that your funds go missing, which is something I experienced myself just a few weeks ago, you are required to file a tracer request which will set you back by $35. These troubles would probably be too much for a newbie to deal with. As such, a dedicated Singapore & more specifically South Easy Asia based exchange would help solve the problem for newbies. The developers believe that block chain technology is the future and to drive it mainstream, there would be a need for a retail store, which will further lower the barriers to entry. Numoney is looking to store funds in their personal cash vaults, eliminating the need for any bank as a middleman. For a start, there are two possibilities for interested party to make their purchase. 1) They can make a trip down to any of their office and make a cash payment, any subsequent actions required will be done by the staff on duty. Do note that OTC purchase has a minimum purchase of $500. Otherwise, you can also top up your exchange account at their office as well. 2) As much as possible (or until the bank shuts the account down), customers can also top up their exchange account through bank transfer. This provides a straightforward "fiat in-fiat out" solutions, bypassing the various steps required to cash out your profits when you purchase cryptocurrency. For a start, Numoney is looking to support Ethereum on their exchange. Progressively they are looking to add more alternate coins, effectively turning the exchange to something similar to Binance. Numoney exchange would hence be a Coinbase/Gemini + Binance hybrid. Looking at the roadmap, 26 Feb - Launch of exchange and beginning of Ethereum trading pair March - Launch of Bitcoin & Litecoin trading pair April - Launch of Ripple trading pair May - Launch of Monero trading pair Unlike Initial Coin Offering which is done through a smart contract, Initial Exchange Offering would be done on the exchange. For the IEO, NMX tokens would be offered for sale. NMX token serves a similar purpose as Binance token, NMX token will be used to cover the exchange fees. A total of 1,000,000,000 NMX token will be minted and the hard cap for this IEO is $10,000,000. 1NMX = $0.01. Any additional coins unsold would be burned. Sales of the token will be done in the form of dutch auction. Do join the developers in their telegram group to find out more. | title | How To Purchase Cryptocurrency In Singapore Part 2 (Alternative Cryptocurrencies) |
| body | Part 2: How to purchase alternative cryptocurrencies (Altcoins) that are not listed in any of the mainstream exchanges As mentioned above, only a handful of cryptocurrencies can be purchased directly using fiat. So how do we go about purchasing the other 1300 over cryptocurrencies? There are 2 main ways in which people use to purchase other cryptocurrencies -Through shapeshift/changeally -Through exchanges like Bittrex/Poloniex/Binance and many others Shapeshift/Changeally: Shapeshift: https://www.shapeshift.io/ Changeally: https://changelly.com/?ref_id=da899aa3acb9 Shapeshift and Changeally are 2 different websites that provides similar services. You send currency A to them, they send currency B back to you, something like a conventional money exchanger we have in the real life. However, they tend to charge slightly inflated rates (maybe you will lose out 5~10% from the market rate if you use such services). However, they bring about alot of convenience (many people don't mind paying more for convenience) and they are also built into various mobile wallets like Coinomi. I would advise you to download Coinomi wallet if you are using android, transfer your Bitcoin/Ethereum/Litecoin/Bitcoin Cash to this Coinomi wallet and Shapeshift/Changeally from here to get the alternative coins you want. Personally I have only used Shapeshift. *Please please, screenshot and write down your 12 words seed code when you download your coinomi so that your coins dont go missing if your phone is lost. If you lose the seed, you lose your coin, simple as that. Do note that if you are using the web version of Shapeshift/Changeally, you will need to have the specific cryptocurrency wallet available on your desktop/phone to receive the coins after changing. Be very careful about the addresses, any miskey-ing of address would result in funds being lost. (Will be elaborating on this next time). Shapeshift/Changeally do not support many alternative coins, but the alternative coins that they support are some of the top and most stable coins, so chances are, the coins that you are interested in would probably be there. Using exchanges like Binance/Bittrex/Poloniex: Binance: https://www.binance.com/ Bittrex: https://bittrex.com/Home/Markets Poloniex: https://poloniex.com/ Personally, I only own accounts from Binance and Bittrex and only have funds in Bittrex. But I will be transferring over to Binance once the coins that I own are listed there. In this exchanges, the main pairing would be -BTC-A (BTC represents Bitcoin while A represents your alternative coins) -ETH-A (ETH represents Ethereum) -BNB-A (BNB represents Binance Coin) - Only for Binance -USDT-A (USDT represents USD Teter) - USDT basically is pegged to the prevailing USD price with maybe 3% deviation up or down) This might seem to be a foreign concept to gauge but I will try to break it down into simpler terms for you. In these exchanges, they do not accept fiat. Most of the trades are done in Bitcoin. In other words, the prices you see are all in term of Bitcoin or Satoshis. 1 Bitcoin = 100 000 000 Satoshis. So taking the current price of Bitcoin which is USD $17 000, 1 Satoshi is = $0.00017. In crypto, we actually mainly look at satoshi values for trades. Why is this so? Most of the trading are done in BTC pairing and hence, if your coin value increased in terms of dollar but has fell in terms of satoshi, it basically means that you coin is doing worst in comparison to Bitcoin. Any increase in the coin value is due to Bitcoin and not due to your alternative coin. In this scenerio, your money would be better off being placed in Bitcoin. This is quite confusing so let me try to help you digest: For example, In October 2017, Bitcoin was worth ~$5000 and your alternative coin A was worth 100 000 satoshi ($5) In December 2017, Bitcoin has rosed to ~$15 0000 and your alternative coin A is now worth 50 000 satoshi ($7.50) As you can see, the $ value of your coin A has rose by $2.50, which presumably might seem like a good thing, but the satoshi value has fell by half. Yes, you are making a profit, BUT your money would be better off being put into BTC because in the time your coin A grew by 50% in dollar value, Bitcoin has grew by 200% in dollar value. This is a mistake that alot of newbies make. They think that the dollar value is almighty, but in this world of crypto, BTC/satoshi value is king. So what do we need to do if we want to purchase coins from these exchanges? We will need to purchase Bitcoin from Coinbase/Coinhako/Gemini and transfer it to these exchanges for us to buy our alternative coins. But if you remember what I said earlier on, it is expensive to transfer Bitcoin around. So there is this small little hack that people use. 1) Purchase Ethereum/Litecoin from Coinbase/Coinhako/Gemini -We do this because ETH and LTC have shorter block time (which means your funds will travel faster because it will need 6 blocks confirmation before a transaction is considered successful) and also it is way cheaper. 2) Transfer it to Binance/Bittrex/Poloniex 3) Sell the coins for Bitcoin or Binance Coin 4) Buy the alternative coins you want. This will greatly shorten your time and save you money as the fees for Bitcoin is ridiculously high and the block time is long. Some transactions might take over a day to confirm if the network is congested. What are the difference between the exchanges? Each exchanges charge different fees and have different interface. Bittrex has a 0.25% fees for every transaction (limit orders) Binance has a 0.1% fees which can be cut into half if you use Binance Coin. Poloniex has a 0.15% maker fees and 0.25% taker fees. *Every trade occurs between two parties: the maker, whose order exists on the order book prior to the trade, and the taker, who places the order that matches (or "takes") the maker's order. Makers are so named because their orders make the liquidity in a market. Takers are the ones who remove this liquidity by matching makers' orders with their own. In layman term, if you put an order in, the fees would be 0.15%, but if you were to buy or sell off directly at current highest bid, the fee would be 0.25%. Some background is that Bittrex and Polo are mainly used by USA while Binance is a Hong Kong based exchange which is mainly used by Asian. *Bittrex is currently experiencing insane backlog in verification and has halted new account creation. As such, I dont think you can make an account in the near future. Thats all for now, I will be talking about cashing out for SGD soon. Do feel free to tell me what you would like to know next or if you have any feedback for me. Thank you! |

| title | How To Purchase CryptoCurrency In Singapore Part 1 |
| body | Hi guys, I have been actively reading up about cryptocurrency in the past few months. Some of the people around me have also been coming to me to ask me about cryptocurrency and how do they go about purchasing them. So I reckon it would be good for me to spend my leave writing some articles to share with you guys about it to make it easier for you to join in the cryptocurrency fever. The fact that you are reading this post makes me assume that you are interested in buying cryptocurrency too. Cryptocurrency might seem to be a foreign concept until recent weeks where mainstream media kept reporting about Bitcoin smashing price barriers (mainly due to the launch of CBOE and CME futures). This is a highly speculative market and most coins/tokens DO NOT actually have a working product. You are investing in the development of these products, unlike conventional stock market where you are investing in company that has certain amount of market share. As such, it is important that you do your due diligence and DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH. As a general rule of thumb, put in as much money as you are willing to lose. Everything that I am going to share are mainly my own opinion so do take it with a pinch of a salt. I thought it would be a good idea to start off by sharing how to purchase cryptocurrency in Singapore before sharing about more technical stuff in subsequent article. 1) How to purchase cryptocurrencies? -Main cryptocurrencies that can be purchased by fiat (SGD/USD) - Bitcoin/Ethereum/Litecoin/Bitcoin Cash (added just 5 hours ago) -Alternative cryptocurrencies that cannot be purchased by fiat - Vertcoin/OmiseGo/BAT (and 1300 over other currencies) Part 1: How to purchase the main cryptocurrencies Coinbase: Purchasing cryptocurrencies is pretty straightforward, for beginners I would advise using Coinbase. It has a clean user interface which allows you to navigate easily. It is currently one of the top downloaded apps on the app store. The downside is that Coinbase charge absurd fees. Coinbase fees for credit card purchase is 3.99% (which is way higher than any other exchanges), and the fees for purchase using bank account is 1.49%. Do note that what I mean by bank account here is using this platform called xfers (https://www.xfers.com/sg/) -Do note that xfers currently SUSPENDS digital wallet top up until further notice. (Digital wallet is the wallet we use to purchase crypto currency) So what does this imply - From now until the foreseeable future, we can only purchase through Coinbase using credit card. All new account would only have a limit of $200/week. The limits would be progressively increased overtime. For example, I am looking to purchase $200 worth of Ethereum. The cost break down would be as follows: You would pay 3.99% of Coinbase fees - $7.98 You would pay $5.20 of DBS bank transfer fees. So effectively, you will need to pay $205.20 to get $192 worth of coins. This would technically set you back by almost 10% before you even begin looking at any profit. But fret not, this first time purchase can actually be covered through a referral code. I shall shamelessly put my referral link here for you: https://www.coinbase.com/join/59efdc0c1ac76d0239e2a282 Any $100 worth of any cryptocurrencies purchase would give you $10 worth of Bitcoin. I would also be getting $10 worth of Bitcoin for myself. Subsequently, you can share your referral link to your friends. To be honest, if you purchase say any other currency other than Bitcoin, this $10 of Bitcoin that is given as part of the referral would be pretty useless. Because, before any transaction within block chains can occur, you will need to pay network/miner fees. In this case, because Bitcoin network is always congested, the fees are astronomical. You will have to pay $7 to transfer $10 worth of coins, so a better solution would be to keep the money in Coinbase. Comparatively, it cost about $0.40 to transfer Ethereum/Litecoin. I will be covering network/miner fees in subsequent posts. Coinhako: Another alternative would be using Coinhako (https://www.coinhako.com/), Coinhako charges a significantly lower fees of 0.9%, by using the promo code COINGECKO (not sure if still applicable), it will reduce the fees to 0.7%. But there are a few drawbacks in using Coinhako -It only allow purchase through bank transfer (xfers) but currently, xfers is down until further notice which means that Coinhako is useless until xfers is up and running again. -You are only able to purchase Bitcoin and Ethereum in Coinhako -Coinhako prices could be slightly more inflated than Coinbase at times, the opposite holds true because the price mainly depends on the demand and supply at that point of time. If you are interested, you can sign up through my referral link where every $100 of purchase would net you $5 worth of additional coins which will help in covering your initial Coinhako cost. https://www.coinhako.com/referrals/sign_up/KOHQINHON_375707 Gemini: There is another exchange called Gemini (https://gemini.com/) which allows bank transfer (through DBS to US bank account). I personally have not tried using this before and hence couldn't give much input. I made an account but it is still being verified after almost a week. You can try using it and share your inputs with me! What I normally do would be to refer to before exchanges and see which exchange would give me more coins or a better rate before deciding from where I would like to purchase my coins from. *Do note that exchanges would require you to set up 2FA, sending proof of address or even take a selfie for verification purposes. *Also, as most exchanges are experiencing unprecedented surge in applicants, it might take sometime for your verification to be processed. As the post is getting too long, I will be covering how to purchase alternative cryptocurrencies in Part 2. Thanks for reading and feel free to drop me a message about what you would like to learn more about (so long as it is within everything I know). |
