| title | Catholic President Moon Jae-in spends the first day of his holiday at a Buddhist temple |
| body | Image by The Blue House On July 28th, the first day of his Summer holiday, Korean President Moon Jae-in visited UNESCO World Heritage Site Bongjeong temple, one of seven Korean temples on the list. Despite being a Catholic, Moon – who has a baptismal name of Timothy, meaning a man who serves God – has a large amount of interest in and respect for Buddhist culture. Prior to his visit to Bongjeong Temple, President Moon has also visited the other six temples on the UNESCO list: Tongdo Temple, Buseok Temple, Beopju Temple, Magok Temple, Seonam Temple, and Daeheung Temple, where he studied for the bar exam as a student. Having spent so much time in Buddhist temples, Moon has developed great affection for the tea served by monks. At a meeting of senior staff and aides held on August 10 last year, he proclaimed “Let’s introduce some tea!” before introducing them Gokwoo Tea, a type of green tea made by Daeheung Temple, where he studied for the bar. In order to promote the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, he even blended a tea of his own named “Serene Morning of PyeongChang” and served it to his international dignitary guests. Not limiting himself to Korean temples, Moon also went trekking in the Himalayas during Summer 2016 with some of his closest aides, and on the last leg of his journey visited Bhutan, a country in which Buddhism is deeply rooted. Considering all of this, it is no surprise that President Moon also had a close relationship with the late great Buddhist monk Oh Hyun. Following his passing last May, Moon uploaded a Facebook posted recounting an encounter between the two, when Oh handed him a makgeoli cup as a gift, before secretly slipping him a little pocket money. |

The whole area north of the river is called Gangbuk, and the south of the river is called Gangnam. (Korean word ‘gang’ means river, ‘buk’ is north, and ‘nam’ is south.) So, this is the wider definition of Gangnam. Then, there is an administrative district named Gangbuk-gu in the Gangbuk area, and an administrative district named Gangnam-gu in the Gangnam area. This is the narrow definition. And there is a third definition. When Gangnam is mentioned, it usually refers to the three adjacent districts of Seocho-gu, Gangnam-gu, and Songpa-gu. These three districts have many characteristics in common, the first of which is the skyrocketing costs for housing. | body | Image : Pixabay.com Instant noodles, generally and collectively called ‘ramyeon’ (Korean pronunciation of the same word ‘ramen’ in Japanese), usually occupy a considerable space in a supermarket. Hundreds of various instant noodles fill in the ramyeon racks, which are usually positioned beside the pre-cooked rice racks. While the domestic sale remains flat, the ramyeon export has enjoyed a steady growth, with China, America, Japan and Taiwan as major markets. | title | A guide to finding the best Pyeongyang Naengmyeon in Seoul |
| body | Image by KnowingKorea Naengmyeon is a Korean dish composed of noodles in a cold, meaty broth. Easily one of the most popular dishes among Koreans seeking a way to cool down during the hot summer, the best naengymeon is traditionally found in the North Korean capital of Pyeongyang, but as few people are able to visit the country, especially South Koreans, they must instead settle for restaurants serving Pyeongyang-style naengmyeon in Seoul. Fortunately, with many North Koreans having escaped South during the Korean War, or defecting in the 65 years since, and bringing their knowledge and love of naengmyeon with them, there is no shortage of choice. Originally founded by a North Korean defector and now run by his son, Eulmildae (을밀대) boasts incredibly long lines cementing it as the number one naengmyeon restaurant in Seoul. Dongmu Bapsang (동무밥상), too, was also founded not only by a North Korean defector, but specifically an ex-chef of Okryugwan (옥류관), one of the most famous naengmyeon-serving restaurants in Pyeongyang itself. Euljimyeonok (을지면옥), too, is one of the most popular and famous naengmyeon restaurants in Korea providing the quintessential Pyeongyang naengymeong experience. The same also owns Pildongmyeonok (필동면옥), where they sell delicious North Korea-style dumplings not available at Euljimyeonok. Similarly, Pyeongyangmyeonok (평양면옥) is also popular for the incredible dumplings and dumpling soup served with their naengmyeon. Some of the oldest Pyeongyang naengmyeon restaurants in Seoul were founded all the way back in the 1960s, and include Seobukmyeonok (서북면옥), known for their uniquely chewy noodles, and Buwon Myeonok (부원면옥), known for their strong taste and soft texture, as well as being sweeter than traditional Pyeongyang naengmyeon. Yujinsikdang (유진식당) is another long-existing restaurant which may look shabby at first look, but if you refuse to judge the book by its cover you can enjoy delicious naengymeon with distinctly darker, less salty noodles. Conversely, if you prefer something more high-end, you can visit Uraeok (우래옥), which is also famous for several other delicious Korean dishes. Other famous Pyeongyang naengmyeon includes the clear broth and thick, rough noodles at Junginmyeonok (정인면옥), the soft easily broken down noodles at Neung Ra Do (능라도), Pyeongraeok (평래옥) with their delicious seasoned chicken side-dish, Bongpiyang (봉피양) which also offers delicious pork ribs, and Nampomyeonok (남포면옥) where you can also enjoy the pleasant experience of eating in a traditional Korean house. |

Well known as a good calcium source, dried anchovies are widely used in Korean cooking, though rarely as main dishes. Dried anchovy stir-fry may be made in two different ways, depending on what seasoning is used between soy sauce and red pepper paste. Green peppers are usually stir-fried with anchovies, and various nuts and seeds may be added. Bigger anchovies are not used for stir-fry dishes. |

However, what caught the most attention of reporters during this visit was the orange bag hanging from the shoulder of Kim’s Senior Private Secretary. This bag was given to the President and First Lady by the PyeongChang Olympics Organizing Committee and volunteers, and was made by recycling banners from the games in the hopes of reducing waste. It seems like through her choice of bag, the First Lady will be bringing a lot more attention to the practice of reducing waste by recycling items originally intended for one-time use. |

| title | Seven Buddhist mountain temples gain UNESCO World Heritage status |
| body | https://youtu.be/y9KKutt39ZE On June 30th, during the 42nd session of the World Heritage Committee, it was unanimously decided to add seven South Korean Buddhist temples that date back as far as the seventh century to the UNESCO World Heritage List, bringing the country’s total number of heritage sites to thirteen. The seven temples are Beopju Temple on Mt. Songni, Tongdo Temple on Mt. Yeongchuk, Buseok Temple on Mt. Bonghwang, Bongjeong Temple on Mt. Cheondeung, Magok Temple on Mt. Taehwa, Seonam Temple on Mt. Jogye, and Daeheung Temple on Mt. Duryun. An official from the Korean Cultural Heritage Administration said, "since their establishment, the temples have continued the tradition of Korean Buddhism that is both religious and deeply rooted in people's lives,” while a statement released by UNESCO emphasized “these mountain monasteries are sacred places, which have survived as living centers of faith and daily religious practice to the present." As a result of the temples’ addition to the list, the committee suggested an improved maintenance plan to help them deal with increasing numbers of visitors, and asked that no new buildings be constructed without consulting them first. |

"body": "https://youtu.be/y9KKutt39ZE\n\nOn June 30th, during the 42nd session of the World Heritage Committee, it was unanimously decided to add seven South Korean Buddhist temples that date back as far as the seventh century to the UNESCO World Heritage List, bringing the country’s total number of heritage sites to thirteen.\n\nThe seven temples are Beopju Temple on Mt. Songni, Tongdo Temple on Mt. Yeongchuk, Buseok Temple on Mt. Bonghwang, Bongjeong Temple on Mt. Cheondeung, Magok Temple on Mt. Taehwa, Seonam Temple on Mt. Jogye, and Daeheung Temple on Mt. Duryun.\n\nAn official from the Korean Cultural Heritage Administration said, \"since their establishment, the temples have continued the tradition of Korean Buddhism that is both religious and deeply rooted in people's lives,” while a statement released by UNESCO emphasized “these mountain monasteries are sacred places, which have survived as living centers of faith and daily religious practice to the present.\"\n\nAs a result of the temples’ addition to the list, the committee suggested an improved maintenance plan to help them deal with increasing numbers of visitors, and asked that no new buildings be constructed without consulting them first.",

| title | Hanok Guest Houses in Popularity |
| body | Image by KnowingKorea The popularity of hanok guest houses continues. Usually gathered around old city towns. These traditional Korean houses are favored not only by foreign tourists but also local travellers. Korean young people find it ‘exotic’ to stay in hanok guest houses, while older generations want to feel a long-forgotten atmosphere of hanok. Those hanoks which have survived the destructions of the Korean War (1950-53) and the following decades of unexceptional housing development, are mostly converted into restaurants, cafes, galleries, and guesthouses, all enjoying rising popularity. | title | Constitutional Court rules legislation on substitute military service for conscientious objectors |
| body | Image by Republic of Korea Army (https://www.flickr.com/photos/kormnd/7155475455), CC BY-SA license. All South Korean males between the ages of 18 and 35 are required to complete up to two years of military service, one of the longest periods of military service in the world, though it pales in comparison to the decade-long service endured by their neighbors to the North. Anyone who refuses to comply with the military draft, and does not fall under medical exemption, faces imprisonment for up to three years under Article 88 of the Military Service Act. As a result, 1,186 men are currently on trial or serving jail time for ‘conscientious objection’, most of whom are Jehovah’s Witnesses who refuse to comply for religious reasons. Amnesty International claims more than 19,300 South Koreans have been imprisoned for conscientious objection since 1953, a policy contrary to international human rights standards and the target of much criticism from the international community for violating “freedom of thought, conscience and religion.” Some conscientious objectors have even successfully appealed for refugee status in other countries for fear of punishment back home. Now, in a landmark decision following a petition from 28 conscientious objectors, South Korea’s constitutional court has ruled that such punishment is unconstitutional, as the government does not offer alternative, civilian forms of service, like that seen in 31 other countries, a group which includes Germany, Taiwan, and Denmark. Such alternative forms of service may include work in social welfare, emergency services, or even disaster relief. This is contrary to two former rulings in 2004 and 2011, which stated that the constitutional right to freedom of conscience did not overrule the need for national defense. The government now has until the end of 2019 to revise the law, and the Defense Ministry has already promised to honor the ruling and introduce alternative forms of service as soon as possible. These actions are in line with the policies of President Moon Jae-In, who campaigned on a promise to consider introducing alternative forms of service for conscientious objectors. Following the ruling, one conscientious objector named Hong Jeong-hun stated “I refuse to pick up a rifle. I renounce all forms of violence. Today’s ruling was a strong message against punishing those who risk going to prison in order to protect peace from violence.” Not all are so happy with the decision, however, with some protesting in front of the court, shouting “Why don’t you just leave the country if you don’t want to serve in the military!?” and others warning that the option of alternative service will lead to large numbers of young men trying to evade military service under false claims of conscientious objection. |

| title | World Kimchi Institute discovers microorganism capable of surviving in extreme environments |
| body | Image by LoggaWiggler (Pixabay.com) A microorganism has been discovered in Korean sea salt that can survive in temperatures exceeding 66 degrees Celsius. What’s more, this salt is a main ingredient in Kimchi, hence why the discovery was made by a research team at Korea’s World Insitutute of Kimchi. Director of the institute, Ha Jae-ho, stated, "this study has a lot of meaning as we have found new materials that are capable of surviving and multiplying in extreme environments, making them highly valuable for industrial use”. Whereas most other microorganisms can only survive between temperatures of 35 and 45 degrees Celsius and within relatively low concentrations of salt, this newly discovered organism, designated as CBA1119, thrives in high temperatures and environments with saline levels of 20% or more, which is why they are often found in fermented foods such as kimchi and salted fish. As exciting as this discovery is, further research is required to learn exactly how CBA1119 can survive in such harsh conditions as these, though some current theories center on its extraordinarily large genome, one of the largest in its class of organism, known as holoarchaea. |

| body | Image by Republic of Korea (https://www.flickr.com/photos/koreanet/4383670217), CC BY-SA 2.0 license Sinseollo, or royal casserole, used to be served in Korean traditional court cuisine. Consisting of meat, fish, vegetables and mushrooms, all cooked in a rich broth, the dish is served in an uniquely shaped vessel called sinseollo. The hole in the center is placed with hot embers to keep the dish hot until the meal is finished. The name sinseollo came from the word ‘sinseon,’ or a Taoist hermit believed to have immortal life. A legend tells the story of a Joseon Dynasty scholar who invented the dish and later became a sinseon, hence the name of dish came. |

Maybe it's because of the Korean's obsession with youth, and the younger peoples need to make it seem like they have it better than anyone else around them. It's an idea. Now, I'm off to have a drink, I'll try your remmedy later. :) |

| body | Image by Republic of Korea (https://www.flickr.com/photos/koreanet/13885170783), CC BY-SA 2.0 license In Korea, you find food names with ‘mayak’ added like a prefix. The work ‘mayak’ is literally translated as ‘drug,’ but that does not mean the food contains narcotic content. It is used to emphasize the specified food is so addictively delicious. Usually given to simple dishes like tteokbokki or gimbap, the good word of ‘ma-yak’ is dubbed by the eaters, not by the cooks, which means the ma-yak titled foods will increase. There are tens of mayak tteokbokki and mayak gimbap shops in Seoul. Gwangjang Market’s mayak gimbap is well-known to tourists. |

| body | Image by KnowingKorea Korea is a dolmen kingdom. About 40 percent of the world’s dolmens are found in the Korean Peninsular, with the largest concentration of these in the area once ruled by the ancient kingdom of Baekje. Three specific dolmen sites in Gochang, Hwasun and Ganghwa were designated as UNESCO World Heritage in 1997. Some local governments created parks around the dolmens and try to attract tourists with dolmen festivals, but not many people seem to be interested in Neolithic stone tombs. |

| title | What is the difference between garakguksu and udon? |
| body | Garakguksu in Daejeon station is one of the famous noodle restaurant in Korea. Image by KnowingKorea. Garakguksu, a noodle dish in soup, is Korean variation of Japanese udon. The name was first used to replace the Japanese word ‘udon,’ but ends up in two different dishes with two different names. One of the cheapest dishes you could eat in a restaurant, Korean garakguksu consists of different noodles, different broth, and different toppings from those of udon. Usually served with kimchi and a few slices of yellow pickled radish only, the dish may be too light for a proper meal. Udon is one of the Japanese noodle. Image by KnowingKorea. |

| body | Image by Josiah Lau Photography (https://www.flickr.com/photos/josiahlau/6617107445), CC BY-ND 2.0 license. Korean rice cake soup, tteokguk, is made by boiling rice cake slices in the soup. Rice cake is the single major ingredient. Korean dumpling soup, manduguk, is made by boiling dumplings in the soup. Dumplings are the only major ingredient. Now, you can guess how to make tteok-mandu-guk, the rice cake and dumpling soup. The three dishes may look similar, made of similar, if not the same, broth and garnishes, and usually similarly priced, but they are authentically different dishes. Dumpling soup. For his efforts he became the first Korean to recieve honorary Chinese citizenship. | title | Unification Flag Under Controversy |
| body | https://youtu.be/twEHe2HOksQ The much-debated ‘Hanbando’ flag, or the ‘Unification Flag’ as known to the world, was first used in 1991 in the 41st World Table Tennis Championship in Chiba, Japan, where South Korea and North Korea participated as a single team. The Flag has a blue silhouette of the Korean peninsula including Jeju Island, and with or without the Liancourt Rocks, known as Dokdo to Koreans and Takeshima to Japanese. Having no official status, the Hanbando flag has been used in international sporting events, including the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympics, the 2002 Busan Asian Games, the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics, the 2006 Torino Winter Olympics, and the 2006 Doha Asian Games. From the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics the Hanbando flag was not used, reflecting the growing political conflicts surrounding the Korean peninsula, but it is to be used again in the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. Not everybody welcomes the unification flag, though. Protesters burn the Hanbando flag along with the North Korean flag. |

Originated in the hands of thrifty housewives utilizing cloth offcuts in the past when fabric was less commonplace, it was used to cover the meals, screen the doors, or wrap the wedding gifts. Today, Jogakbo is often appreciated as an artwork and found in galleries and traditional crafts shops. Jogakbo pillow. | title | How to Eat Samgyeopsal Grill |
| body | Image by anokarina (https://www.flickr.com/photos/anokarina/6206276618/), CC BY-SA 2.0 license. Grilled pork belly, or Samgyeopsal-gui in Korean, is doubtlessly no.1 preference for most Koreans when they dine out with friends, family, company colleagues, and perhaps foreign tourists. Samgyeopsal is grilled on the table and cut with scissors in bite sizes. You may wrap the grilled meat in lettuce or sesame leaves, with some green pepper and garlic slices if you like, and don’t forget the ssamjang, a thick spicy paste used in many Korean dishes. Or, you can eat any way you like. Samgyeopsal grill is usually accompanied by alcoholic beverages such as soju, beer, or soju-beer cocktail, called ‘so-maek’ in Korean. Image by KnowingKorea |

| body | Image by KnowingKorea Created on the site where Gyeongui railway line used to run, Gyeongui Line Forest Park is a linear urban park, with a total length of 6.3 kilometers and varying width of 10 to 60 meters. As the downtown part of the line was moved underground, an urban park of a unique shape was created, instantly becoming a new attraction of Seoul. The park is easily accessed from four subway stations (Hyochang, Gongdeok, Seogang, Hongdae), and connects to trendy neighborhoods, with Hongdae and Yeonnamdong as the most frequented ones.
