| body | ***Originally posted to the Octopus Sleep Blog with Original Photo*** She’s going to be tired. Constantly. Don’t let her stay in bed all day. She’s not going to want to eat. Make her food any way. She’s going to want to cancel plans just to go home and watch Netflix. Take her out dancing any way. She will look like she’s not in the mood to be silly. Try to make her laugh any way. She’s going to want to cry over spilled coffee. Don’t make it seem like its not a big deal or that she’s being dramatic. She’s going to be happy and sad at the same time, and I know that sounds crazy but it’s the truth. She is going to need constant reassurance that she’s beautiful. Tell her. She is going to constantly need reassurance that you’re not going to leave her. She isn’t doubting you or questioning your love, depression comes with anxiety. It comes with no appetite, sleeping 10 hours and waking up tired. It comes with the illusion of standing in a room with hundreds of people and being seen by none of them. It doesn’t make sense. It’s impossible to understand so imagine how they feel…. fighting a constant internal battle. So be that support system. Reassure and love hard. Never give up on her. Giving a depressed person hope or security and ripping it from them is just plain destructive and cruel. Be there for her and actually back it up with action. I’ve dealt with depression for many years and having toxic people around made it nearly impossible for me to heal. My ex was supportive, but it wasn’t enough because of who was taking care of his affairs. If any of you out there have a significant other whom has a caretaker that has a bit “too much” to say about your depression, nip it in the bud before its too late. I wasn’t allowed to express anger or frustration, because if I did, I was “crazy and unstable” when it was THEM that were. Moral of the story: Be there for her, do whatever you need to to in order to make her happy and keep her happy. Don’t get angry because she’s symptomatic or say hurtful things about her problems. This partially led to to my breakup with my now ex-fiance. |

In short, the question of whether or not bariatric surgery is appropriate has a simple solution; It all depends. Although it may not have been the answer you were looking for, it’s reality. For many people, bariatric surgery is the only solution to their weight issues; However, you will many others who ultimately end up not benefiting from weight loss surgery. They sadly end of gaining most (if not all) of their weight lost and oftentimes more weight on top of what they regained. To determine if weight loss surgery is the appropriate choice for you, you will need to consider a number of things. LAP-BAND, Vertical Banded Gastroplasty, SIPS, Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch (DS), the mini gastric bypass, Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and the Gastric Balloon are the choices available to many (depending on their health status and type of insurance they may have). One of the many factors you will want to consider, when identifying whether weight reduction is the right decision for for you, is the unwanted weight. Many of bariatric patients (including myself) had 100+ pounds to lose. We tried counting calories, diet and exercise alone and our efforts failed miserably..many times. For us, weight loss surgery was the only option we had to live a healthier, long life. If we had the proper tools, support and resources available years prior, surgery wouldn’t have been necessary. When contemplating weight loss surgery one must consider this question: Will having surgery truly help me lose and keep that lost weight off for good? Will WLS benefit my life and those of my family/loved ones? If I lose this excess weight, will my husband/boyfriend/fiance still continue to be by my side? The divorce rate in the WLS community is over 50% and possibly higher than that now. The significant other will get jealous of the attention that their partner is getting, get insanely jealous and start fights that will ultimately lead to the demise of a once-loving relationship. Crystal Chanel made a video several years ago about this very same thing, which will be included at the end of this article. Also consider the permanent lifestyle change when contemplating WLS: You will never be able to eat normal portions again. Dumping syndrome, food intolerances, acid reflux, hair loss, nutrient absorption issues are areal possibility. I’m not trying to scare you, I’m just stating the reality that us bariatric surgery patients face. Your health is another factor that you should consider when trying to see if the weight loss procedure is right for you. Bariatric surgery can often be a lifesaver for those that are severely morbidly obese. The severely obese place their health at risk and may be at extreme risk for death. Unfortunately my grandmother was one of those people that passed due to obesity-related complications 17 years ago. At the time of death, she was 5'1" and 268 lbs, morbidly obese for someone of her small stature. Her morbid obesity is what led to her death, causing her blood pressure to go up so high that it ultimately shut all her organs down (multiple organ failure due to obesity related complications was the official cause). You can decide whether or not you are interested in weight loss surgery. As a reminder, it’s very important to realize that you have some time to consider (and reconsider) your choice. Not all individuals are candidates for weight loss surgery and I’ve known several people that have had their paperwork denied through pure lack of effort. My former dietician said that a client of hers was denied simply because she showed lack of effort, and didn’t lose the 5% of her body weight necessary for approval. In order for one to be considered, one must get a referral from their PCP (or GP) and go through several months of nutritionist visits, tests and a psych evaluation which is extremely important. If you have active addictions, you will not be considered until you get your issues under control. Weight loss surgery is very serious. You’re going to be altering a part of your body that can never be put back together if you have what we call “buyers remorse”. VSG (Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy),BPD-DS (Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch) and the Gastric Bypass are irreversible so consider your choice VERY carefully before opting for surgery. ****I had the vertical sleeve gastrectomy on 2/28/17 at Peconic Bay Medical Center. Dr Paayal P. Mehta was my surgeon whom performed the surgery. | body | I highly recommend the following word processors because they’re simple, easy to use and user friendly. All are compatible with either Windows, Linux or Mac OSX: Jarte is based on WordPad. There is a free option and then a paid option (that gives users more functionality). The free version is more than adequate for your word processing needs. I first discovered Jarte in 2010 and have used it ever since. The layout is simple and easy to understand. Features include Windows compatibility, an ergonomic tabbed interface, built in spell-check and fast loading time. Apache OpenOfficeWriter (OpenOffice.org) is a Windows-based word processor that also supports Microsoft Word documents, handles cell-dependent calculations, and spell checks your work. Writer is included with the OpenOffice suite, which contains tools for creating word documents, graphics, presentations, spreadsheets, database and other common file types. AbiWord is a Windows, Linux and MacOSX based word processing platform very similar to Microsoft Word. It is a full cross-platform application and has compatibility with not only Microsoft Word but also OpenOffice.org, Word Perfect and Palm OS. Google Drive/Docs is web-based, meaning it can be used from any browser and operating system. It’s fully compatible with MS Word and is a suite with a variety of products very similar to MS Word. I’ve been using Google Drive/Docs for several years and find it much easier and more user friendly than MS Word. QuickOffice has been merged with Google Docs so opening and editing Word documents will be no problem. http://www.jarte.com/ https://www.abisource.com/ http://www.openoffice.org/ https://drive.google.com/ |

The free version is more than adequate for your word processing needs. I first discovered Jarte in 2010 and have used it ever since. The layout is simple and easy to understand. Features include Windows compatibility, an ergonomic tabbed interface, built in spell-check and fast loading time.\n\nApache OpenOfficeWriter (OpenOffice.org) is a Windows-based word processor that also supports Microsoft Word documents, handles cell-dependent calculations, and spell checks your work. Writer is included with the OpenOffice suite, which contains tools for creating word documents, graphics, presentations, spreadsheets, database and other common file types.\n\nAbiWord is a Windows, Linux and MacOSX based word processing platform very similar to Microsoft Word. It is a full cross-platform application and has compatibility with not only Microsoft Word but also OpenOffice.org, Word Perfect and Palm OS. \n\nGoogle Drive/Docs is web-based, meaning it can be used from any browser and operating system. It’s fully compatible with MS Word and is a suite with a variety of products very similar to MS Word. I’ve been using Google Drive/Docs for several years and find it much easier and more user friendly than MS Word. QuickOffice has been merged with Google Docs so opening and editing Word documents will be no problem.\n\n\nhttp://www.jarte.com/\nhttps://www.abisource.com/\nhttp://www.openoffice.org/\nhttps://drive.google.com/",

| body | Note: This post originally appeared on my blog The Octopus Sleep (formerly The Bohemian Boho Breeze) 1 year ago. It has been modified to reflect my current situation. Being thrifty was a way of life for me. I grew up poor in New York City on Food Stamps and we had to make our Stamps stretch. Sometimes we added water to our Kool-Aid to make it stretch for a few days longer. We’d use dish-washing liquid when we didn’t have laundry detergent to wash our clothes. Back in the 90’s the PA allowance was $68.50 every two weeks (for a single person) and that had to last for two weeks. When I was searching for work at Goodwill, I received an extra $89 a month for a 30-day MetroCard which was a lifesaver because I would’ve never been able to afford to travel every day on $68.50 every two weeks. Fels Naptha Hispano Shredded Soap White Vinegar Apple Cider Vinegar Washing Soda Borax Essential Oils The ingredients above are only a couple of things you can use to make laundry detergent. Did you know? The motivation behind why fabric softener has a distinctive fragrance is to cover up the chemical smell? I use products such as White Vinegar or Apple Cider Vinegar since customary cleansing agents have synthetic ingredients in in them that are not Eco-friendly and potentially harmful to your health. Google the term "chemical smell fabric softener" and do your research. I've moved away from utilizing chemical fabric softeners and use hand made, natural ones instead for this very reason! I’ve made DIY laundry detergents with Hispano shredded soap and baking soda. Sometimes I’ve used Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap with baking soda and my clothes came out really clean (and great smelling!). You can make liquid laundry detergent with Hispano or Fels Naptha and Castile Soap. Google “homemade laundry detergent” for dozens of recipes. When money was tight, I’ve used hair shampoo or body wash to keep my clothes clean. Or I’d use the Tide Clean and Fresh Detergent in the small yellow container that some dollar stores sell. That’s no longer an issue, but when you’re struggling to survive, you do what you have to do in order to maintain good hygiene. Grocery Shopping Before moving off of Long Island, I used to shop at my nearby Compare Supermarket, Dollar Tree, Islip Warehouse C-Town or Bravo because their prices were very reasonable. On the off chance that I couldn't find what I required at those stores, I went to Trader Joe's (which is claimed by Aldi Nord) or Whole Foods Market. Both Aldi's and Trader Joe's have sensibly estimated things and despite the fact that it's been a long time since I've been to an Aldi's market, regardless I hear their costs are as yet sensible. I also shopped at Walgreens, CVS and Rite Aid in case I cant find what I'm looking for in the supermarkets. Use, use, use your rewards cards at any store that offers them. I used to get coupons for 40% of one single item at CVS or $5 off your next order (since I was a regular patron). I live in Central Harlem now so there's Duane Reade, Foodtown and Key Food. Purchasing Clothes I suggest buying your clothes from the clearance racks from either Walmart or Target. Most of my clothing comes from either Walmart, Target, thrift stores or clothing banks. Since I’ve had bariatric surgery, I go through clothes quickly, so if you’re losing weight, buy your clothes from a thrift store or off the clearance rack and not buy them new because you won’t be wearing that size for too long. I even buy my shoes from Walmart, Target, Family Dollar or even thrift shops (I clean them before I wear them). I’ve always been a bargain shopper and I’ve always found great deals anywhere I shop, even online catalogs. There’s no such thing as not being able to find a deal anywhere…because out there somewhere there’s always a deal waiting for you to take advantage of it. |

| body | Everyone knows that water is an important part of taking good care of yourself, due to the dangers of dehydration, and the many health benefits it provides you. However, it is all too common to not drink enough water during the day, whether because you don’t enjoy it, you don’t think you have the time, or you simply forget. When you get enough water during the day, it can help with: Improving your skin, hair, and nails Relieving headaches Reducing muscle cramps Helping to flush toxins out of your body Improving weight loss efforts Giving you more energy This report is going to go over some of the different ways you can increase your water intake daily, as well as how to remind yourself it is time to drink more. 1. Drink Water Before Every Meal The first tip for drinking more water on a regular basis is simple – just have a full glass of water before each meal and snack you consume, including before your morning cup of coffee. Train your mind to know that if you are going to put anything into your body, whether it is your breakfast or a late-night treat, you have to drink 8 ounces of water first. This provides multiple benefits. First, it reminds you to drink another glass of water. It will also help your food digest more efficiently. Plus, it prevents you from overeating since water fills you up quickly. It's not uncommon to think you are hungry, when in fact you're thirsty. If you are no longer hungry after the full glass of water, wait a bit before eating. 2. Make Your Own Infused or Flavored Water A common problem people have with drinking water isn’t that they don’t remember to drink it, but they’re just not interested in it. You don’t necessarily have to drink just plain filtered or tap water all day, every day. There are many ways to add flavor to your water and make it more interesting, without piling on the sugar and extra calories. For example you can add single-serve flavor enhancers to your water. Use the ones that don't have Aspartame or Saccharin (both are known to cause serious health issues). The Simple Method If you're short on time and just want a super quick way to add flavor to your water, go with lime water. All you need to do is add a few lime wedges into your water, squeezing in the juice first, then putting the wedges in it. Limes have a lot of tart juice, so this will flavor your water quickly and give it a tart taste. You can also try a mixture of lemon and lime, or use other juicy fruits like grapefruit and oranges (which will be explained below). Fruit or Veggie Infused Water You can use other fruits, vegetables, and even herbs to flavor this water. This is called infused water, since you're soaking your fruits and/or veggies in the water for an extended period of time (to let the flavors and nutrients seep in). You aren’t just flavoring your water with these ingredients, but adding more nutrients and releasing the health benefits of said ingredients. To make infused water, you should have a glass pitcher (or a BPA-free plastic pitcher) and access to filtered or water. Prepare your fruits, veggies, and herbs by either chopping or slicing them into small pieces. Fruits with hard skin should be peeled first before slicing. Veggies should also be peeled and chopped. Use a muddler or pestle your herbs to release the oils, flavors and nutrients. If you have no access to filter or distilled water, boil 1 gallon of water in a large pot for 30 minutes. Let cool for 2 hours before using. This lowers the chlorine and impurity content of your water. Add the ingredients to the bottom of the pitcher, cover with ice, then add your water. Let it sit in the refrigerator for at least 2-3 hours or overnight for a richer flavor. 3. Choose a Cup That You Love Do you want to encourage yourself to drink more water? It’s all in the cup! If you use boring water bottles you don’t like, then you probably won’t drink as much water as you should. A good way to have fun with your water and remember to bring the bottle everywhere with you is to choose a water bottle that works best for you. This might mean the overall look and color of it, or the ease of holding onto it while walking. There are so many small details in a water bottle that determine if it’s a good fit or not. For example, if you drive a lot, you want it to fit perfectly in your cup holder. On the other hand, if you bike for exercise, you may want it to have a tight lid, but one that is easy to pop off when drinking while riding. Try out a few different cups until you feel like you've found the one that is perfect for you. 4. Limit Your Consumption of Soft Drinks Another little trick for drinking more water is reducing the amount of soft drinks you drink. This doesn’t mean drinking water 100 percent of the time and never having a cup of juice or soda again. When you cut down the amount of soda and juice you drink, have a bottle of water at your side at all times. This eventually increases your water intake simply because you are going for water when you feel a thirst, and not other beverages. 5. Always Track Your Water Intake This isn’t something you need to do every day for the rest of your life, but for now, it might be hard to determine how much water to drink and if you have even reached your goal for the day. Start by figuring out a good way to track your water. This can be an app on your phone, a notepad, a planner you keep in your purse, or a program on your computer. Start by tracking your water for a few days before trying to increase how much you drink. This lets you know how much you are currently drinking on an average day. If it is less than 8-10 glasses of water (8 ounces each) a day, you need to start increasing it. Once you are tracking daily, it helps you know how and when to drink a little more throughout the day. 6. Enjoy Fruits & Veggies with High Water Content If you find it difficult to drink 64 ounces of water daily, then eat your water instead! You should still try to drink as much as you can, but this is good for the days when you’re a little below your daily water intake. There are fruits and veggies that have high water content, therefore helping to hydrate you. These include: Cucumbers Grapefruit Apples Pineapple Lettuce Celery Radishes Watermelon Cantaloupe 7. Dilute Your Juice Whenever Possible During those times when you really want a glass of juice instead of water, you can dilute it! Just think about it – if you have a 12-ounce glass, and you dilute it with water just by 25 percent, that cup of yummy fruit juice has 4 extra ounces of water. It's a super easy way to add to your water intake for the day. This is also going to reduce your calories, carbs, and sugar. 8. Try These Helpful Reminders If you enjoy water, but constantly forget to drink it, these little reminder may be of help to you: 1.Drink water before every meal. Before you eat breakfast, drink 1 glass of water to get your metabolism going. 2. Drink water before and after your workouts. 3. Drink a glass of water after consuming coffee, tea and other caffeinated drinks. For every 8oz of coffee or tea, drink 8oz-16oz of water. 4. Drink a glass of water every time you use the bathroom or go on a lunch break. As long as you keep these reminders in the back of your mind, and follow the other tips mentioned, you should be on your way to increasing your water intake and benefiting from it. |
