titleCrypto Price Today: Bitcoin nears $20,000; Solana, Polkadot and Avalanche gain up to 7%
bodyNew Delhi: Crypto tokens continued to move higher on Friday. Bitcoin moved towards the key level of $20,000 but could not touch it again. Ethereum's Merge, which will shift the protocol from proof-of-work to a more energy-efficient proof-of-stake protocol, is roughly a week away. All the top tokens, even the stablecoins, were trading with strong gains on Friday. Solana rallied about 7 per cent, whereas Polkadot and Avalanche gained 5 per cent each. The global cryptocurrency market cap was trading decently higher at the $994.1 billion mark, surging almost 2 per cent in the last 24 hours. However, the total trading volume dropped more than 5 per cent close to $73.39 billion. Whats cooking in IndiaCrypto trading exchange Unocoin has launched a 'refer and earn programme' for its traders which will allow its existing users to earn 51 per cent of the trading fees for each transaction done by their referee. Global Updates The winners of this year's Ballon d'Or, the top award for individual footballers, will receive digital tokens to go with their gleaming trophies, the organisers told AFP. The France-based award, run by the Equipe media group, has feted the beautiful game's best players for 66 years, bestowing on them global acclaim and a trophy in the shape of a golden football. Tech view by BuyUcoin cryptocurrency exchangeTerra Classic surged over 100 per cent in 7 days. Terra Classic, the renamed version of Terra Chain, has witnessed a phenomenal rally in the past 7 days with its value jumping by over 100 per cent. The Terra classic with a market cap of approximately $3.32 billion is the 26th largest crypto in the world. After the much-publicized collapse of Terra Blockchain, the community has put in a series of efforts to save the Terra ecosystem. Adoption of proposal 1623 and airdrop for users are some of the prominent developments to revive the terra ecosystem by its founders. Some investors are looking at Terra classic and Luna classic as some lottery tickets to make big money in a short span but investors should thoroughly study the fundamentals to take an informed decision. titleScenes From Around the World in the Aftermath of Queen Elizabeth II's Death
bodyBraving strong wind and rain, a silent line of mourners snaked to the wrought iron gate of Edinburgh’s Holyrood Palace on Friday, patiently waiting their turn to read the official notice announcing Queen Elizabeth II’s passing. To one side, flower bouquets piled against the granite wall of an improvised memorial garden—most with heartfelt messages attached to the only monarch most Brits have ever known. https://api.time.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/queen-elizabeth-aftermath-24-hours-olivia-harris.jpg?quality=85&w=2400 London, England Olivia Harris for TIME Across the United Kingdom, the death of the Queen has left a chasm. At Balmoral Castle, where Britain’s longest-serving monarch died aged 96 on Thursday afternoon, floral tributes continue to amass. At London’s St Paul’s Cathedral, a service of prayer and reflection on Friday was attended by 2,000 members of the public as well as London Mayor Sadiq Khan and U.K. Prime Minister Liz Truss, who last saw Queen Elizabeth on Tuesday when she asked to form a government. Truss is the 15th Prime Minister the Queen had met; the first was Winston Churchill. https://api.time.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/queen-elizabeth-aftermath-24-hours-michael-vince-kim-3.jpg?quality=85&w=2400 Edinburgh, Scotland Michael Vince Kim for TIME Arriving at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday evening, the unhappy news hit Britons hard. Most were home or crowded into pubs to enjoy an after-work libation. Within hours, a crowd of thousands gathered outside Buckingham Palace in London in solemn remembrance, finally breaking into muffled cheers of “God save the King” when Charles III arrived Friday to a home he has known for 70 years as prince but now entered as sovereign for the very first time. Accompanied by Queen Consort Camila, the new King, dressed in a dark suit, greeted the throng as he examined the tributes left to his revered, departed mother. Read More: Queen Elizabeth’s Passing Could Push Some Countries to Alter Their Ties to the British Monarchy “[Queen Elizabeth] encompasses so much of what is Britain,” Eleanor Allingham, from Edinburgh, told TIME outside Buckingham Palace on Thursday. “She was a huge role model for everyone, every woman, every British person.” But the Queen was in fact the constitutional head of state for 14 other nations, including Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Belize, Jamaica, Tuvalu, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. All have also been paying their own tributes. In a statement, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said, “For most Canadians, we have known no other Sovereign. She would proclaim ‘it was good to be home’ when returning to her beloved Canada. She was indeed at home here, and Canadians never ceased to return her affection.” https://api.time.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/queen-elizabeth-aftermath-24-hours-michael-vince-kim-4.jpg?quality=85&w=2400 Edinburgh, Scotland Michael Vince Kim for TIME At the same time, the Queen’s death is reigniting debate about the legacy of the British Empire, which was already dwindling at the time of her coronation in 1953. In its stead, a Commonwealth of independent former colonies maintained close bonds with their erstwhile empress. In Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, people stayed glued to their television sets for the latest news on arcane royal funeral rites. Read More: What We Know So Far About Queen Elizabeth II’s Funeral Still, amid the outpouring of grief and gratitude in far-flung dominions, questions will rumble louder and bolder about why King Charles III should now be their head of state from thousands of miles away. Last year, Barbados decided to become a republic, although it will remain part of the Commonwealth. Other nations will be wrestling with similar sentiments. Adam Bandt, the leader of Australia’s Greens Party, posted condolences to the Queen’s family on Twitter, but adding “Now Australia must move forward … [and] become a Republic.” —With reporting by Yasmeen Serhan/London https://api.time.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/queen-elizabeth-aftermath-24-hours-jamie-hawkesworth.jpg?quality=85&w=2400 London, England Jamie Hawkesworth for TIME https://api.time.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/queen-elizabeth-aftermath-24-hours-olivia-harris-2.jpg?quality=85&w=2400 London, England Olivia Harris for TIME https://api.time.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/queen-elizabeth-aftermath-24-hours-olivia-harris-3.jpg?quality=85&w=2400 London, England Olivia Harris for TIME https://api.time.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/queen-elizabeth-aftermath-24-hours-stuart-franklin.jpg?quality=85&w=2400 Buckingham Palace, London, England Stuart Franklin—Magnum Photos for TIME https://api.time.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/queen-elizabeth-aftermath-24-hours-stuart-franklin-2.jpg?quality=85&w=2400 Buckingham Palace, London, England Stuart Franklin—Magnum Photos for TIME https://api.time.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/queen-elizabeth-aftermath-24-hours-melissa-alcena-1.jpg?quality=85&w=2400 Tom Hartley, the newly appointed British High Commissioner, in Nassau, Bahamas Melissa Alcena for TIME https://api.time.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/queen-elizabeth-aftermath-24-hours-melissa-alcena-2.jpg?quality=85&w=2400 Nassau, Bahamas Melissa Alcena for TIME https://api.time.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/queen-elizabeth-aftermath-24-hours-kacey-jeffers-3.jpg?quality=85&w=2400 A celebratory toast for a life well-lived at a liquor store in Nevis Kacey Jeffers for TIME https://api.time.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/queen-elizabeth-aftermath-24-hours-kacey-jeffers.jpg?quality=85&w=2400 Stamps at the Nevis Philatelic Bureau in Nevis, an island in the Caribbean Sea Kacey Jeffers for TIME https://api.time.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/queen-elizabeth-aftermath-24-hours-kacey-jeffers-2.jpg?quality=85&w=2400 Ras Iroy, 55, community organizer and activist, Nevis Kacey Jeffers for TIME https://api.time.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/queen-elizabeth-aftermath-24-hours-tatsiana-chypsanava.jpg?quality=85&w=2400 Nelson, New Zealand Tatsiana Chypsanava for TIME https://api.time.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/queen-elizabeth-aftermath-24-hours-jamie-hawkesworth-2.jpg?quality=85&w=2400 Buckingham Palace, London, England Jamie Hawkesworth for TIME Write to Charlie Campbell at [email protected]

titleBitcoin’s Price Dropped Below $19K This Week for the First Time Since June. Why September Could Get Even Worse
bodyEditorial Independence We want to help you make more informed decisions. Some links on this page — clearly marked — may take you to a partner website and may result in us earning a referral commission. For more information, see How We Make Money. Bitcoin’s price dropped below $19,000 this week for the first time since the June crypto market crash, and some experts say it could drop even further this month. Bitcoin and ethereum prices have been on the downswing since a mini rally in early August, and there is no end in sight to the macroeconomic factors experts say will keep holding them down. September also has a track record of poor performance — more bad news for bitcoin and ethereum, which increasingly track the performance of the stock market. Bitcoin and ethereum prices tumbled last week after Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell hinted at more federal interest rate hikes ahead. It could be a sign of what’s to come: The next Fed meeting will take place Sept. 20-21, and another rate increase is expected. Global conflict and challenges are contributing to America’s stubborn inflation, experts say. Russia’s war in Ukraine is in its seventh month, and the related European energy crisis is likely to make for a tough winter. And then there is the strained relationship between the U.S. and China. “The geopolitical situation is dominating the conversation. Continued war means continued inflation,” says Martin Hiesboeck, head of blockchain and crypto research at Uphold. “At the same time, we have a situation we have never had before: almost full employment, expanding economy, and yet unprecedented price hikes.” Here’s why all this could spell trouble for bitcoin and ethereum prices this month: How the Economy Is Affecting Riskier Assets Like Crypto When economic uncertainty is high, confidence in riskier assets like crypto and tech stocks drops. “The retail trader is starting to panic again as meme stocks and cryptos fall under pressure,” according to Edward Moya, a senior market analyst at brokerage firm Oanda. Moya continues to see a correlation between bitcoin and tech stocks, and “that could spell trouble for bitcoin.” As U.S. companies continue to reduce headcount via layoffs, the stock market continues to lag. The ramifications for bitcoin, ethereum, and the crypto market are clear, according to Moya. “If the mood remains that it will be a bad September swoon on Wall Street, a retest of the summer lows seems inevitable,” Moya says. Crypto expert and market analyst Wendy O says bitcoin would need to move above $26,700 for her to become short-term bullish. Bitcoin hasn’t come close to that price since June. “Are we going to be able to do that? I don’t know yet, but one thing I am noticing with bitcoin is that we kissed $24,800 [on July 30] and we had a couple of attempts to sustain and flip above but we were unable to do so,” O says. “We might get a little bit of a retest but then continue to go upward.” Moya and O have both said bitcoin could still drop to $10,000 or lower before there’s any reason to think we’re coming out of the current crypto winter. How Continuing Global Conflict Can Hold Down Crypto Prices Geopolitical tensions have had a negative effect on crypto prices in recent weeks. Cryptocurrencies could fall back down to lows as we saw in June, possibly even further, if geopolitical tensions continue to intensify around the world, experts say. While July was the best month since 2020 for stocks and crypto, rising tensions between China and the U.S., the two largest economies in the world, “won’t support risk appetite anytime soon,” according to Moya. “The macroeconomic environment continues to cause fear for investors, as the European energy crisis dominates headlines,” according to Marcus Sotiriou, a market analyst at digital asset broker GlobalBlock. “Germany’s sanctions against Russia have led to the shutdown of the NordStream pipeline, which has resulted in gas prices soaring.” The crypto market has been closely correlated with the stock market since the start of the year, so when stocks fall because of the current conflicts in the world, cryptocurrencies most likely will too. On top of that, the U.S. economy is wrestling with four-decade high inflation, rising interest rates, and a potential recession. Hiesboeck says more uncertainty around the world’s politics and the U.S. economy means more unpredictability of the markets, and “investors don’t like uncertainty.” “The July rally was just an interlude, fueled purely by short-term opportunities and not long-term positioning of major players,” Hiesboeck says. How Crypto Investors Should Handle Market Volatility and Uncertainty If you’re a long-term investor, short-term volatility shouldn’t drastically alter your crypto investment strategy. Experts recommend sticking to bitcoin and ethereum, the two most well-known and established cryptocurrencies, and allocating no more than 5% of your investment portfolio to crypto. Always prioritize more important aspects of your finances — like saving up for an emergency, contributing to a traditional retirement account, and paying off high-interest debt — before investing in crypto. You should only invest what you’re OK with losing, experts say. Cryptocurrencies are highly volatile and risky assets — much more so than stocks — and economic and political uncertainty can create even more volatility in the markets. While bitcoin and ethereum have seen some significant gains in the last week, they’re still far away from their all-time highs last November. One thing is certain: there’s a growing list of potential worries over the U.S. economy and escalating global conflict, so experts recommend playing it safe with your investments in the meantime.

Some links on this page — clearly marked — may take you to a partner website and may result in us earning a referral commission. For more information, see How We Make Money.\nBitcoin’s price dropped below $19,000 this week for the first time since the June crypto market crash, and some experts say it could drop even further this month. \n\nBitcoin and ethereum prices have been on the downswing since a mini rally in early August, and there is no end in sight to the macroeconomic factors experts say will keep holding them down. September also has a track record of poor performance — more bad news for bitcoin and ethereum, which increasingly track the performance of the stock market. \n\nBitcoin and ethereum prices tumbled last week after Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell hinted at more federal interest rate hikes ahead. It could be a sign of what’s to come: The next Fed meeting will take place Sept. 20-21, and another rate increase is expected. \n\nGlobal conflict and challenges are contributing to America’s stubborn inflation, experts say. Russia’s war in Ukraine is in its seventh month, and the related European energy crisis is likely to make for a tough winter. And then there is the strained relationship between the U.S. and China. \n\n“The geopolitical situation is dominating the conversation. Continued war means continued inflation,” says Martin Hiesboeck, head of blockchain and crypto research at Uphold. “At the same time, we have a situation we have never had before: almost full employment, expanding economy, and yet unprecedented price hikes.”\n\nHere’s why all this could spell trouble for bitcoin and ethereum prices this month:\n\nHow the Economy Is Affecting Riskier Assets Like Crypto\nWhen economic uncertainty is high, confidence in riskier assets like crypto and tech stocks drops. \n\n“The retail trader is starting to panic again as meme stocks and cryptos fall under pressure,” according to Edward Moya, a senior market analyst at brokerage firm Oanda. Moya continues to see a correlation between bitcoin and tech stocks, and “that could spell trouble for bitcoin.”\n\nAs U.S. companies continue to reduce headcount via layoffs, the stock market continues to lag. The ramifications for bitcoin, ethereum, and the crypto market are clear, according to Moya. \n\n“If the mood remains that it will be a bad September swoon on Wall Street, a retest of the summer lows seems inevitable,” Moya says. \n\nCrypto expert and market analyst Wendy O says bitcoin would need to move above $26,700 for her to become short-term bullish. Bitcoin hasn’t come close to that price since June. \n\n“Are we going to be able to do that? I don’t know yet, but one thing I am noticing with bitcoin is that we kissed $24,800 [on July 30] and we had a couple of attempts to sustain and flip above but we were unable to do so,” O says. “We might get a little bit of a retest but then continue to go upward.”\n\nMoya and O have both said bitcoin could still drop to $10,000 or lower before there’s any reason to think we’re coming out of the current crypto winter. \n\nHow Continuing Global Conflict Can Hold Down Crypto Prices\nGeopolitical tensions have had a negative effect on crypto prices in recent weeks. \n\nCryptocurrencies could fall back down to lows as we saw in June, possibly even further, if geopolitical tensions continue to intensify around the world, experts say. While July was the best month since 2020 for stocks and crypto, rising tensions between China and the U.S., the two largest economies in the world, “won’t support risk appetite anytime soon,” according to Moya. \n\n“The macroeconomic environment continues to cause fear for investors, as the European energy crisis dominates headlines,” according to Marcus Sotiriou, a market analyst at digital asset broker GlobalBlock. “Germany’s sanctions against Russia have led to the shutdown of the NordStream pipeline, which has resulted in gas prices soaring.”\n\nThe crypto market has been closely correlated with the stock market since the start of the year, so when stocks fall because of the current conflicts in the world, cryptocurrencies most likely will too. On top of that, the U.S. economy is wrestling with four-decade high inflation, rising interest rates, and a potential recession. Hiesboeck says more uncertainty around the world’s politics and the U.S. economy means more unpredictability of the markets, and “investors don’t like uncertainty.” \n\n“The July rally was just an interlude, fueled purely by short-term opportunities and not long-term positioning of major players,” Hiesboeck says.\n\nHow Crypto Investors Should Handle Market Volatility and Uncertainty\nIf you’re a long-term investor, short-term volatility shouldn’t drastically alter your crypto investment strategy. \n\nExperts recommend sticking to bitcoin and ethereum, the two most well-known and established cryptocurrencies, and allocating no more than 5% of your investment portfolio to crypto. Always prioritize more important aspects of your finances — like saving up for an emergency, contributing to a traditional retirement account, and paying off high-interest debt — before investing in crypto. titleCardiovascular Effects of Pre-Workout Caffeine and Energy Supplements
bodyAmong the many products comprising the booming dietary supplement industry, a growing number of individuals are turning to supplements and drinks containing caffeine and other compounds purported to increase energy. According to some reports, the energy drink market in the United States reached more than $9.7 billion in sales in 2015.1 While many use these supplements with the aim of reducing fatigue and improving mental focus, people often seek to improve athletic performance by consuming such products. However, experts have cautioned that, despite their popularity, caffeine-based products and other types of energy-boosting supplements could have adverse effects, especially on cardiovascular health. Because of these risks, the World Health Organization has cited consumption of energy drinks as a significant public health issue.2 While most of these risks are associated with the high levels of caffeine contained in these products, other common ingredients intended to increase energy include taurine, guarana, ginseng, glucuronolactone, and bitter orange.3 In a 2022 position statement, the European Association of Preventive Cardiology notedthat consumption of a formulation containing caffeine, taurine, and glucuronolactone “may increase arterial blood pressure, act as a platelet aggregation enhancing factor and compromise endothelial function in healthy individuals.”3 Continue Reading The authors point to a range of cardiovascular side effects linked to consumption of energy drinks, including coronary disease, heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias, ventricular tachycardia, and aortic dissection, among numerous other potential cardiovascular consequences.3 In addition, in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in 2019, Shah et al examined the effects of 2 different energy drinks on cardiovascular parameters compared to placebo.4 The results showed that that consumption of the energy drinks significantly prolonged participants’ QTc interval (maximum change from baseline in Bazett’s corrected QT interval: +17.9±13.9 ms for drink A, +19.6±15.8 ms for drink B, and +11.9±11.1 ms with placebo; P =.005 for ANOVA; P =.04 and P <.01, respectively, compared to placebo). Significant increases in peripheral and central systolic and diastolic blood pressure were also observed with the energy drinks compared to placebo (all P <.001). These risks may be especially elevated among individuals with underlying heart conditions. A 2017 study found that the risk of cardiac arrest increased by 20% in individuals with familial long QT syndrome after drinking 2 cans of an energy drink.3 Along with the cardiovascular hazards associated with these drinks and other energy supplements in general, consuming them before exercise can further compound the risks as cardiovascular demands increase with physical activity. For example, some findings suggest that intake of 200-300 mg of caffeine 1 hour prior to aerobic exercise decreased endothelial cell function in healthy individuals, as indicated by reductions in myocardial blood flow.5 To gauge clinician views on the potential cardiovascular risks of consuming caffeine and other energy supplements before exercise, Cardiology Advisor checked in with Gregory M Marcus, MD, MAS, professor of medicine in residence and associate chief of cardiology for research at the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine, and Jeffrey J. Hsu, MD, PhD, assistant clinical professor of medicine in the division of cardiology at the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Medicine. What is known thus far about the cardiovascular effects of supplements such as energy drinks containing caffeine or other substances before exercising? Dr Marcus: The great majority of research in this area has been conducted in artificial environments using small numbers of research participants and usually examining 1 brief moment in time rather than repeated assessments.6 Although the data there are conflicting, there is some evidence that caffeine may help bolster athletic performance. However, these studies have generally not been designed to assess the safety of this practice nor longer-term consequences beyond mainly a single workout. It’s important to emphasize that the possible health benefits of caffeine that have been recently highlighted in the medical literature and lay press stem from large observational studies of predominately regular coffee drinkers rather than the use of high doses of caffeine or caffeine supplements specifically before exercise.7 Dr Hsu: Caffeine is a common ingredient in most energy drinks, including those taken prior to exercise. While caffeine in moderate amounts – the equivalent of 2 to 4 cups of coffee – may help to improve endurance, the concern is that higher doses of caffeine may increase the risk of adverse cardiovascular effects, including arrhythmias and severe hypertension, particularly when combined with high-intensity exercise. Have you observed any effects related to these drinks or supplements in your own patients? Dr Hsu: Yes, it is increasingly common for athletes – both at the recreational and elite levels – to use caffeinated “pre-workout” supplements during their training, and I have seen young athletes present with symptoms related to arrhythmias or ectopy. These often improve or completely resolve with cessation of these supplements. How should clinicians advise patients regarding the use of these supplements in the context of exercise? Dr Marcus: While clinicians should, of course, encourage regular exercise, they should likely caution their patients against using supplements or energy drinks to facilitate workouts. There is no strong evidence of clinical benefit and some observational data to demonstrate harm. These energy drinks may include other constituents, including sugar, that are overall detrimental to health. I generally recommend avoiding supplements, as the concentrations of molecules tends to exceed those in natural foods that our bodies have evolved to consume. In general, large randomized trials of supplements tend to show either no benefit or harm to health, often with unintended adverse consequences.7 For example, while observational studies suggest that caffeine as can be found in commonly consumed beverages like coffee does not have a meaningful negative effect on heart rhythm disturbances and may even protect against some common heart rhythm problems, there are many case reports of young, otherwise healthy individuals experiencing clinically significant heart rhythm disturbances in the context of consuming energy drinks with high levels of caffeine.8 Dr Hsu: Clinicians who care for athletes should inquire about supplement use during clinic visits. Clinicians should counsel their patients that there is no “magic bullet” for optimizing their cardiovascular fitness or athletic performance, and athletes should carefully review the components of any exercise supplement they plan to consume. Those who have a history of cardiovascular disease such as arrhythmias, hypertension, or cardiomyopathy should take extra caution and review supplements with their physician prior to use. What are the most pressing remaining research needs regarding this topic? Dr Marcus: Long-term investigations examining actual health-related outcomes beyond simply immediate physical performance are needed to inform clinicians and, in turn, help us to provide the most beneficial guidance to our patients. Dr Hsu: In my opinion, with the widespread use and marketing of these exercise supplements, we need a better understanding of whether we are clearly seeing adverse cardiovascular effects in people who use these supplements. My concern is that there is little regulation of how these supplements are marketed, and combining high doses of caffeine or other stimulants with vigorous exercise may carry undue cardiovascular risk. Those who have a history of cardiovascular disease such as arrhythmias, hypertension, or cardiomyopathy should take extra caution and review supplements with their physician prior to use. \n\nWhat are the most pressing remaining research needs regarding this topic?\n\nDr Marcus: Long-term investigations examining actual health-related outcomes beyond simply immediate physical performance are needed to inform clinicians and, in turn, help us to provide the most beneficial guidance to our patients.\n\nDr Hsu: In my opinion, with the widespread use and marketing of these exercise supplements, we need a better understanding of whether we are clearly seeing adverse cardiovascular effects in people who use these supplements. My concern is that there is little regulation of how these supplements are marketed, and combining high doses of caffeine or other stimulants with vigorous exercise may carry undue cardiovascular risk. \n\nReferences\n\n>Al-Shaar L, Vercammen K, Lu C, Richardson S, Tamez M, Mattei J. titleNew discovery reveals how sugar disrupts gut bacteria, leading to obesity
bodyA new animal study has demonstrated one way sugar can contribute to metabolic diseases such as diabetes is by causing disruptions to the gut microbiome. The novel findings home in on exactly how certain gut bacteria can protect against the harmful effects of a high-fat diet, and how dietary sugar can disrupt those protective mechanisms. It’s certainly not breaking news to suggest a high-fat, high-sugar diet can lead to a variety of health problems. But as scientists learn more about the ways trillions of bacteria in our gut can influence our general health we are also gathering some unique insights into exactly how poor dietary choices are causing particular health problems. In this new study, researchers first focused on what a high-fat, high-sugar diet did to the microbiome of mice, with an eye on a specific kind of immune cell. Called Th17, these immune cells are a specialized subset of T cells that help protect the gut from certain pathogenic bacteria. Low levels of Th17 cells has been associated with metabolic disease and inflammatory conditions. “These immune cells produce molecules that slow down the absorption of ‘bad’ lipids from the intestines and they decrease intestinal inflammation,” explained Ivaylo Ivanov, lead researcher on the project. “In other words, they keep the gut healthy and protect the body from absorbing pathogenic lipids.” So what happened to Th17 cells in mice guts when fed high-fat, high-sugar diets? The animals rapidly developed several characteristics of metabolic disease (weight gain, glucose intolerance), and showed reductions in gut Th17 cells. But even more specifically, the researchers discovered the reduction in Th17 levels was due to diet-induced changes to the gut microbiome. Bacteria known to promote Th17 were replaced by other species of gut bacteria. And it was sugar in particular that seemed to increase populations of harmful gut bacteria that ultimately lowered levels of Th17. Interestingly, Ivanov said as long as the animals retained high levels of gut bacteria known to induce Th17, a fatty diet did not lead to negative metabolic effects. “Sugar eliminates the filamentous bacteria, and the protective Th17 cells disappear as a consequence,” said Ivanov. “When we fed mice a sugar-free, high-fat diet, they retain the intestinal Th17 cells and were completely protected from developing obesity and pre-diabetes, even though they ate the same number of calories.” However, any metabolic health benefits gained by removing sugar from the mouse diet were only apparent in the presence of Th17-inducing gut bacteria. Without that particular microbial composition the animals on adjusted high-fat, low-sugar diets still gained weight and developed metabolic syndrome. “This suggests that some popular dietary interventions, such as minimizing sugars, may only work in people who have certain bacterial populations within their microbiota,” Ivanov added. According to Ivanov, some people may benefit from probiotics that help boost levels of Th17-inducing gut bacteria. But because mouse microbiomes are different to humans, it is unclear exactly what types of bacteria would be optimal, and even with that knowledge a targeted probiotic would only be useful in scenarios where clinicians could be sure a person would need these particular microbes. Perhaps the most overt takeaway from the findings is that one of the ways dietary sugar can lead to metabolic problems is by changing Th17 levels in the gut. And Ivanov speculates a future where Th17 is directly therapeutically targeted, instead of trying to modulate the bacterial middlemen. “Our study emphasizes that a complex interaction between diet, microbiota, and the immune system plays a key role in the development of obesity, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and other conditions,” Ivanov said. “It suggests that for optimal health it is important not only to modify your diet but also improve your microbiome or intestinal immune system, for example, by increasing Th17 cell-inducing bacteria.” The new study was published in Cell. titleHow to Help Your Kids Build Good Habits
bodyKids look forward to summer vacation all year long. For some kids, this might be the lure of what they hope will be unlimited screen time. In many homes, summer may not be a free-for-all, but it certainly does release kids from the constraints of the completed school year and give them time to decompress, pursue other interests, and try new activities. The long and relatively carefree days of summer are the perfect time to help your child develop healthier habits, such as getting regular exercise and being in control of their screen time. Self-monitoring of screen time will serve your child well in the future, as it teaches balance and self-control. If parents can learn how to help their children build good habits for exercise, it will become easier to help them monitor other behaviors and limit their own screen time as well. Regular exercise is not only beneficial for our bodies but also has strong effects on our mental abilities. This can vastly improve a child’s success in school. What better way to use summer vacation? Developing a habit might seem easy, but it’s not! It requires time, commitment, and motivation. The results of a study conducted at the University College of London indicate that it requires an average of 66 days for a new behavior to become automatic. Coincidentally, that’s almost exactly the amount of time you’ll have during your child’s summer vacation to develop the habit of exercise. This idea of exercise being important doesn’t only apply to children, but adults too! For adults, exercise not only provides a variety of physical and emotional benefits, but it also changes your brain. Exercise increases the production of a brain protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which improves cognitive skills and helps you manage stress. Creating an exercise habit over the summer also means getting your kids outside and reducing their screen time. You may even be able to leverage screen time, not just as a reward for exercising but also as a tool that guides and inspires. Fitness games are available on virtually every console and device, and there is ample evidence that sports-based video games increase sports participation. Virtual reality is becoming mainstream, and it is not difficult to get kids and teens to be enthusiastic about VR-based exercise by watching a few YouTube videos. If you’re planning to make exercise a regular habit for your kids, you’ll want to be knowledgeable about the benefits of exercise. You will need to be able to explain the cognitive and emotional benefits of regular exercise to help your kids to understand the value of an exercise habit for their brains and bodies. The research is compelling: Kids who engage in regular vigorous exercise attend better, perform better in school, and remember better than their less active peers. Here are five tips to help your kids build good exercise habits: Once you begin a regular exercise routine, be sure to make your kids aware of their improving fitness and focus. 1. Be consistent but flexible. Making exercise a habit will require that you set a minimum number of days per week (five days per week should be adequate, though daily is ideal to set the habit in stone). Talk with your kids about exercise every day so that it’s always in the forefront of their minds. Try to have a daily time and routine for exercise but be flexible about how you go about creating a habit. If a playdate with friends is spent running around outside or swimming in a pool, let it count as the day’s workout. If you or your child gravitate toward one specific type of exercise, make a conscious effort to mix it up. 2. Make sure exercise is accessible. Even if you live in a warmer climate, it probably isn’t practical or possible to go swimming every day in your backyard pool. If you aren’t prepared to take your child to a pool five times a week during the colder months, you’ll need to make sure the child has access to and is comfortable with another form of exercise. Be willing to go to a local gym, brave the cold weather for a winter walk with the child, or find a way to make indoor exercise engaging. Fitness video games can make living room workouts easy and fun. You can even try pairing an exercise bike with screen time, such as watching a show on Netflix or listening to audiobooks or podcasts. 3. Find an activity your child likes to do. Your child doesn’t need to love it, but it needs to bring him or her satisfaction. If necessary, add music or other screen-based entertainment to make it engaging. Alternating between exercises, such as walking, running, and hiking, might keep them enthusiastic. Introducing new physical activities has the added benefit of getting your child to try something at which the child is not even aware he or she excels. Finding something new the child is good at, even if it is difficult, can bring a sense of satisfaction that keeps the child coming back for more. 4. Cross-training is as good for you as it is for your kids. Alternating between different physical activities exercises different muscles and calls on different areas of the brain. Dancing, team sports, biking, and running all require varying combinations of executive functions. Encouraging your child to cross-train might mean enrolling the child in seasonal sports (from soccer to basketball to baseball or softball) or establishing a family adventure day every week that includes different kinds of active play and exercise. Source: Prophsee Journals/Unsplash 5. Stay local. Anything you can do that is near your home and takes advantage of your local resources is just more practical and repeatable. You can use the gymnasium that is nearby, even if it doesn’t offer as many options as the one the next town. If you live near a bike path or a park, make that the destination for walks and bike riding. If you live in the city, try walking places instead of driving. If you take the time to make exercise a habit this summer, be sure to find a way to accommodate that habit during the school year as well. You may need to adjust your demands around homework so that exercise, which is likely to help your child stay focused and be more efficient in completing homework, comes before sitting down with schoolbooks or screen time. Consider rearranging your dinner schedule so that the family gets their exercise before eating dinner. If you are short on time, briefer interval training has been shown to have great physical and mental health benefits. titleThe Real Risks of Cell Phone Radiation
bodyNEW YORK (MainStreet) — When the neurologist discovered the tumor in Stuart Cobb’s brain earlier this year, he had three pressing questions for his patient. “Do you work with dangerous chemicals?” Cobb didn’t. “Have you been exposed to radiation?” To the best of his knowledge, Cobb hadn’t. “Do you use a cell phone often?” Surprised by the question, Cobb initially answered by saying no. But then his wife, Kristen, blurted out: “You’re on your cell phone all the time!” Cobb admitted his wife was right. In fact, Cobb, who was just 35 years old at the time, would qualify as a cell phone addict. He purchased his first phone when he was 19, and worked part-time at a car wash to pay for it, since cell phones were expensive back then. In the 15-plus years since, Cobb says he has owned more than 30 different cell phones. “I always wanted the latest greatest thing,” he told MainStreet. “I always liked having new gadgets.” Indeed, Cobb, who has worked as a plumber in Portland, Maine, for ten years, needed to be on his cell phone constantly for his job to communicate with his coworkers and clients while running between houses. Hearing this, Cobb’s neurologist posed another question: “Which side of your head do you usually place the cell phone to?” Cobb explained he’s right-handed, and almost always presses the phone against that side of his head. Sure enough, the brain tumor was on the right side of his brain. To date, there is no conclusive evidence linking cell phones to brain cancer. One paper published last year in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute refuted any link between the two outright, while another long-term study out this year suggested there was a slight possibility that cell phones cause brain cancer, but that it required more investigation to prove a connection. So the verdict, according to every major health organization from the Federal Drug Administration to the World Health Organization, is that cell phones are safe, for now. But for Cobb and his wife, who works as a medical transcriptionist, their experience has led them to conclude there must be a link. Stuart was an otherwise healthy 30-something man with no history of brain cancer in his family. Of all his relatives, only his grandmother suffered cancer of any kind (skin cancer). Moreover, several of the doctors Cobb consulted suggested the cell phone may be a possible cause, though none would say for sure. Scroll to Continue More proof, in the couple’s mind, came in the weeks after Cobb’s operation. Doctors successfully removed part, but not all, of his tumor as some of it had become tangled up in blood vessels in his brain. Following the surgery, Cobb went to a rehab center to regain his strength, and there, he and his wife heard from doctors and patients that there had been an increase in the number of brain cancer victims in their 20s and 30s. Suddenly, Stuart and Kristen, who had never known about any potential risks from cell phone use, came to believe that cell phones were the force behind this phenomenon. “I was extremely shocked about the whole thing,” Cobb said, his speech mildly impaired from his surgery. “But now I really think there is going to be an epidemic of brain tumors in the future.” What Research Does (And Doesn’t) Tell Us Some might call Cobb’s prediction the doomsday scenario, and others might call it paranoia. As with any new technology, when cell phones were first introduced several decades ago, consumers and researchers worried they might pose some health risks. Through the years, the focus has been primarily on the impact of radiation emitted from the cell phone’s antenna as it transmits a wireless signal. Yet, after hundreds of studies have been published looking into the risks of this radiation, the verdict remains the same: Either cell phones will kill us or they won’t. “In spite of years of research, we still do not know whether mobile phone radiation causes any health effects or not,” said Dariusz Leszczynski, a research professor at the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority in Finland, who has authored several studies on cell phone health risks. “In fact, what can be considered astonishing, is we still do not know for sure whether the human body reacts to mobile phone radiation.” Part of the problem, according to researchers, is that even if cell phones do cause cancer, it could take as long as 30 years to manifest itself. “In the U.S., everyone really started to own cell phones around 2000, so if cancer is 20 or 30 years down the road, we’re not even there yet,” said Sean Gray, a senior analyst at the Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit public health group that has studied cell phone radiation. “We’re completely in the dark right now.” Still, ominous research papers have begun to pile up from around the world, linking cell phone radiation to pretty much every possible malady except cancer. In recent years, prolonged cell phone use has been found to negatively affect sperm, to cause insomnia, headaches and depression, to increase the chances of tinnitus and memory loss. Just this week, a study was published arguing that using a cell phone while pregnant can cause behavioral problems in the child. And that doesn’t even take into account the numerous risks that may be caused by Wi-Fi, which now comes standard on many phones. Several countries have been motivated by these and other studies to take preventative steps against cell phone radiation risks. France, Israel and Finland have each urged advertisers to stop marketing cell phones to children, due to concerns that kids are more susceptible to any health risks there may be from cell phone radiation. In the U.S., some regions have attempted to issue their own precautions. Back in July, San Francisco passed a law requiring retailers to advertise the amount of radiation emitted by each cell phone they sell. Likewise, in Maine, where the Cobb family lives, legislators tried and failed to force manufacturers to place warning labels on cell phones stating the product may cause brain cancer. Needless to say, these efforts have been met with resistance from the cell phone industry itself, which argues that public health advocates are simply trying to scare consumers into making different purchasing decisions, without actually having the proof to back up their warnings. “It’s the overwhelming consensus of government agencies that there is no adverse health effect,” said John Walls, vice president of public affairs for the CTIA, the International Association for the Wireless Telecommunications Industry, which sued San Francisco for passing what the group deems an unconstitutional law. “We would urge consumers to listen to what these agencies have to say and then guide their thinking based on that.” So what exactly does the U.S. government have to say about cell phone radiation? According to the FDA, there is “no increased health risk due to radiofrequency energy … emitted by cell phones." Under the current law, the only real regulation comes from the Federal Communications Commission, which requires that they not have a specific absorption rate (SAR) of radiation that exceeds 1.6 watts per kilogram, an amount that the CTIA contends is well below anything that would be remotely dangerous. Of course, the radiation absorption rate varies widely from one cell phone to the next. The Blackberry 8820 has an SAR of 1.58 W/kg, just skirting under the limit, while the Sanyo Katana II has an SAR of just 0.55 W/kg. And while the government’s public statements about cell phone dangers may put consumers at ease, the companies that produce these products slip warnings into the user manual that appear menacing, to say the least. Regardless of which phone you have, if you review your manual, you will likely see a note suggesting you should hold the phone at least an inch from your head, and that you should keep it in a holster, rather than in your pocket. If you’re reading this now and realizing you don’t follow those instructions, don’t worry. You’re certainly not the only one. What if the Cell Phone Industry is Wrong? By the middle of 2010, the number of cell phones in use worldwide had topped a staggering 5 billion, a fifth of which had been added during the previous year and a half alone. But what happens if, in the next few years, researchers definitively prove some or all of the health risks listed above? What happens if, as Stuart Cobb and his wife fear, serious maladies like brain cancer become epidemics as a result of cell phone radiation? For starters, it’s worth noting that not everyone who uses a cell phone is as susceptible to radiation risks. “The younger you are when you start using the phone, the greater the risk,” said Devra Davis, author of Disconnect: The Truth About Cell Phone Radiation and Your Health and a National Book Award finalist. Children and teenagers face starker repercussions since their brains are still developing and their skulls are also more permeable to radiation than older adults. The problem though, is that even if children don’t own their own cell phone, they may still be susceptible to what Davis refers to as “secondhand cell phone radiation” from those using cell phones in proximity to them, much in the same way that people can get sick from secondhand smoke. If this turns out to be the case, given the prevalence of cell phones worldwide, it could theoretically lead to a whole generation of young people who get sick later in life. But for the moment, this is a reality that cell phone companies, and for the most part, the U.S. government, won’t consider, and therefore won’t plan for. “There is no contingency plan that I’m aware of,” said Walls, the spokesperson for CTIA, which represents the cell phone industry as a whole. “You can use an ear piece if you’re concerned, or you can theoretically talk less, but the science tells us that those kinds of measures are not necessary.” Likewise, individual cell phone companies we spoke with, including Motorola and Nokia, argued there is no reason to consider the ultimatum, but insist they would comply with any and all federal safety guidelines. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the FDA said the agency would consider recalling any phone if a “radiation safety defect” was discovered and could potentially impose a monetary penalty on any product that proved dangerous. But as the spokesperson notes, “the FDA would require scientific and validated evidence convincing us that there was a real problem for this to occur.” Many researchers, on the other hand, argue that cell phone companies and the government should be planning now and get more aggressive if the worst ever happened. According to Davis, the U.S. Congress should immediately begin placing warning labels on cell phones, much as Maine proposed, as well as launching a “massive public education program” to teach consumers about the risks of using cell phones and safety tips for minimizing that risk. Davis says that if and when it is ever proven that cell phones do cause cancer or another serious ailment, the government would need to take three additional steps. First, it should make it illegal for companies to sell cell phones without also including a headset free of charge. Second, government agencies would need to force cell phone companies to make safer phone designs that emit lower levels of radiation. And finally, it should crack down on how cell phones are marketed to kids, perhaps even imposing a minimum age for buying a cell phone, much in the same way as cigarette purchases. Similarly, Gray, from the Environmental Working Group, recommends that the government adjust its acceptable radiation exposure limits and add warning labels to the products. Interestingly though, none of the researchers and advocates we spoke with suggested consumers be told to stop using cell phones altogether. In fact, the one point that the cell phone industry and those who want to regulate it seem to agree on is that consumers will continue to use cell phones – no matter what. Would Consumer Demand Be Affected? After cigarettes were proven to be cancer-causing agents in the mid-‘90s, cigarette sales did decline consistently for much of the next decade, but not by as much as one might think. According to annual data from the FTC, 484 billion cigarettes were sold in 1996, and 343 billion were sold in 2006. That might sound substantial, but think about it this way: Enough people in the U.S. wanted to smoke something that had been proven deadly that more than 300 billion cigarettes were sold. In the same way, it’s very likely that consumers would continue to purchase and use cell phones, even if they were proven to be dangerous. “Cell phones are a product that is so engrained in our lives at this point that it’s very difficult to imagine consumers giving them up completely,” said Ross Rubin, director of industry analysis for The NPD Group, which monitors consumer electronics and wireless industry trends. Instead, it’s more likely that consumers would change the way they use the phone, but not the phone itself. Several researchers suggested that consumers might focus more on texting or just using the Internet on their phones, rather than talking on them, since it would keep the product away from their head. “It could end up being a kind of retro-hybrid situation,” Rubin said. “Consumers might use their cell phones to handle their data needs, but might hold off making a call until they get to a landline, unless they have a headset on them.” To some extent, cell phone companies may actually fare even better than cigarettes did in the ‘90s. “The difference between cell phones and tobacco is that cell phones do play a positive role in our society,” said Davis, who notes that cell phones have revolutionized the way we do business with one another and can be useful in emergencies. And, if one needs proof about just how hard it is to get rid of a cell phone, just look to Stuart Cobb who, even though he believes cell phones gave him brain cancer, continues to use a cell phone when he goes to work three days a week. Rather than ditch the phone, Cobb says he now practices safer phone habits, relying on a headset or the speaker phone in order to keep the phone away from his head. “All my coworkers talk on their headsets now, too,” Cobb said. Second, government agencies would need to force cell phone companies to make safer phone designs that emit lower levels of radiation. And finally, it should crack down on how cell phones are marketed to kids, perhaps even imposing a minimum age for buying a cell phone, much in the same way as cigarette purchases.\n\nSimilarly, Gray, from the Environmental Working Group, recommends that the government adjust its acceptable radiation exposure limits and add warning labels to the products.\n\nInterestingly though, none of the researchers and advocates we spoke with suggested consumers be told to stop using cell phones altogether. In fact, the one point that the cell phone industry and those who want to regulate it seem to agree on is that consumers will continue to use cell phones – no matter what.\n\nWould Consumer Demand Be Affected?\n\nAfter cigarettes were proven to be cancer-causing agents in the mid-‘90s, cigarette sales did decline consistently for much of the next decade, but not by as much as one might think.\n\nAccording to annual data from the FTC, 484 billion cigarettes were sold in 1996, and 343 billion were sold in 2006. That might sound substantial, but think about it this way: Enough people in the U.S. wanted to smoke something that had been proven deadly that more than 300 billion cigarettes were sold.\n\nIn the same way, it’s very likely that consumers would continue to purchase and use cell phones, even if they were proven to be dangerous.\n\n“Cell phones are a product that is so engrained in our lives at this point that it’s very difficult to imagine consumers giving them up completely,” said Ross Rubin, director of industry analysis for The NPD Group, which monitors consumer electronics and wireless industry trends.\n\nInstead, it’s more likely that consumers would change the way they use the phone, but not the phone itself. Several researchers suggested that consumers might focus more on texting or just using the Internet on their phones, rather than talking on them, since it would keep the product away from their head.\n\n“It could end up being a kind of retro-hybrid situation,” Rubin said. “Consumers might use their cell phones to handle their data needs, but might hold off making a call until they get to a landline, unless they have a headset on them.”\n\nTo some extent, cell phone companies may actually fare even better than cigarettes did in the ‘90s.\n\n“The difference between cell phones and tobacco is that cell phones do play a positive role in our society,” said Davis, who notes that cell phones have revolutionized the way we do business with one another and can be useful in emergencies.\n\nAnd, if one needs proof about just how hard it is to get rid of a cell phone, just look to Stuart Cobb who, even though he believes cell phones gave him brain cancer, continues to use a cell phone when he goes to work three days a week. Rather than ditch the phone, Cobb says he now practices safer phone habits, relying on a headset or the speaker phone in order to keep the phone away from his head.\n\n“All my coworkers talk on their headsets now, too,” Cobb said.\n\n Best Radiation Protection Tool Buy now-https://bit.ly/3AUkdQE\n (Copy link and paste your browser)",
