      "body": "Every worthy endeavor necessitates research, so I've dedicated myself to the book *Gaia's Garden* by Toby Hemenway--which I recommend heartily.  Over the last two weeks, I've been evaluating the resources available to us and developing a conceptual design for our food forest.  While searching out potential resources on site was not as much fun as imagining what will eventually be planted where, I followed Hemenway's advice to begin with observation and cataloging resources.  Wow, the resulting list of resources is not only surprising, but encouraging. Some of these resources I know exactly how to leverage in the food forest; others leave me wondering why I have them and how I can use them.  A few have already been put to use as you can see from the before and after pictures below.  \n\n\tThe top picture shows how two brush piles have been put to use.  These resources did not have to be moved far, and the mounds of brush and logs (shown in the bottom photo) were hiding a marvelous trove of mulch and compost--enough, in fact, to round out a two-foot berm around the boys' play area and to fill a separate nearby planting bed outlined with the leftover logs.  The t-posts are part of the supports for soon-to-be planted muscadines, and the berm, which is a hugelkultur planting site thanks to a suggestion from a fellow Steemian, will be seeded with hyssop, borage, nasturitums, yarrow, and dill.\n\n![DSC_0088sm.jpg](https://files.steempeak.com/file/steempeak/kalynflanagin/w815NU5Q-DSC_0088-sm.jpg)\n\n![IMG_20180825_192632.jpg](https://files.steempeak.com/file/steempeak/kalynflanagin/hlnpqzo2-IMG_20180825_192632.jpg)\n\nHemenway also recommends by starting with a map.  My initial map is not impressive, and I was disappointed to find Google maps does not include topographical data.  Thus, my map is a simple sketch of a birds-eye perspective of our yard with its current paths, one additional path, current fence lines, major zones, many of its existing plants, the major plants we intend to add over the next 12-15 months, and the re-location of the pond.  An image of my map will be included in the next post.  For now, I'm still trying to decide how to use all of these resources. \n\nResources:\n- 9 volunteer mulberry trees\n- Kieffer pear\n- Peach sapling dug from around my father's best peach tree\n- Golden delicious apple\n- 8 mature oak trees\n- Heaps and heaps of brick (and every time we start digging, we find more bricks)\n- About 20 square feet of old pond liner\n- 4 short wooden posts\n- 7 tall fence posts\n- 9 tall fence posts already set in the ground with rotting panels between them\n- About 400 linear feet of unused edging (a mix of plastic, composite, and metal)\n- Hundreds of irises that need to be thinned or relocated\n- 2 low fences with nothing planted on them\n- My grandmother's rather large cast iron sink \n- 13 tall metal t-posts\n- 100 feet of 4' welded wire fencing\n- 100 feet of 3' welded wire fencing\n- 2 corrugated metal roofing panels\n- 2 very large sheets of glass\n- 2 very old windows with glass intact\n- 200 cubic feet of mostly composted leaf litter (this has apparently been piling up for the last 20 years or so in the densely shaded area on the unused and forgotten side of the garage) \n- As yet uncatalogued posts and building materials peeking through the composted leaf litter\n- Several tomato cages\n- Iron headboard and footboard from an antique bed\n- Logs! Several years ago, we gradually built a long, curved berm from brush and topped it off with a truck load of compost from a local dairy.  A pond is tucked into the slope on the north side.  Hmm, perhaps I will keep some of the brush for another raised bed instead of mulching all of it.",

It has not always been so; in fact, not many years ago, my yard teemed with flowers spilling over the edges of garden paths, herbs and vegetables unfurled in intricate geometric patterns in a culinary *potager*, antique roses perfumed arbors, and two ponds burbled and cooed as Sarasa Comets flashed their scales in the sun and frogs languished on lilies. Seamus smiles from what should be the path to the playground.  The two piles of brush flanking the entrance to the playground were intended to become berms for ornamental plantings.  Thankfully, plans and people change, and these piles will instead be mulched and the space used for muscadines and blueberries.  Seamus would much rather something tasty than pretty.*\n\nMy husband and I clung to the remnants of our landscape, but the garden we had created succumbed to the pressures of our lives.  The cottage garden degenerated into a tangle of unchecked fertility.  However, that's just as well because we are no longer cottage garden people.  The children--those wonderful, inquisitive little boys--have changed us.  I am no longer satisfied by mere beauty.  How could I be when each day I am able to see the world--at least a bit of it--through their eyes?\nIn losing the garden, though, I lost something else.  Even when our yard (and lives) was at its most overwhelmed, I would slip into the yard--in baking light or in the quiet dark--and smear dirt on my face and neck.  I've since learned contact with the soil prompts the release of serotonin and elevates mood for an extended time, but in those moments I was only searching for myself, my fingers scrabbling in the soil, digging up my heart and spreading it like war paint to combat the numbness and invisibility into which I was sinking.\nNow, though, that is not enough.  Streaks of war paint are not enough.  I cannot deny the primal drive to plant, to harvest, to be myself.  Thus, I am digging in my toes, my shovel, my pen.  I am turning my overgrown yard into a food forest.\nAs we labor over this transformation, doing our best to follow the principles of permaculture, I will post our plans, progress, frustrations, and flops with unflinching honesty.  (Actually, I am flinching a bit about the dishes in the yard.)\n\n\n\t\n",
