titleBitcoin (BTC) Super Bullish, In Use by Less than One Percent of World Population
bodyBy Dalmas Ngetich March 9, 2019 There are perhaps a million reasons why you should, above everything else, be excited as a crypto and more specifically, as a Bitcoin holder. Yes, there are challengers on adoption, regulation and storage—millions of dollars worth of coins stolen through hacks or lost private keys, but in the long term, these coins are jewels. Just to quantify, statistics from The Global Findex database, a non-profit organization comprehensively studying how adults spend and save with funding from the Melinda and Gates Foundation, revealed that the number of unbanked—that is, adults and qualified individuals who ought to have a bank account and access to other financial services, decreased 20 percent from 2.5 billion to 1.7 billion after 800 million individuals registered for bank accounts between 2014 to 2017. It may be because of increasing democratization of banks and high smart phone penetration especially in developing economies but when we look past this number, then there is a lot to be desired. Bitcoin has a reliable, secure and a regulator endorsed settlement layer that makes it a market leader. Bullish Statistics on Crypto and Bitcoin At just 10 years old, tantalizing statistics indicate that by Dec 2018, more than 32 million Bitcoin wallets existed. Out of these, 7.2 million addresses were active and roughly five percent of Americans held Bitcoins. As a leading fiat-crypto ramp, CoinBase, the trusted American exchange had more than 20 million active users—a figure expected to grow as they ramp up listing of tokens in sync with their listing framework and compliant with the law. But, here’s a reminder, while there are 32 million Bitcoin addresses—more than the 21 million BTCs to ever circulate, we must also not that most are not active and coupled with the fact that often times users hold more than one address—hot and cold for example—all for expediency. So, the number of actual BTC owners must be lower and that is reflected by the low number of active addresses. As noted 7.2 million were active with 2.3 million used for making payments while 4.3 million point to exchanges where traders speculate on asset prices. This is good news because it reflects how Bitcoin is acting both as a settlement layer and secondly as a medium of exchange—from active addresses. However, for the look of things, it is the holders who take the lion share of Bitcoin addresses. 30 percent of all Bitcoin addresses are made up of hodlers, coin believers who won’t sell in the long haul. Less than One Percent of the World Population Has Used Bitcoin Alex Ziupsnys, a Bitcoin Enthusiast, says the above statistics point to low adoption and in his approximation, less than one percent of the world population know what Bitcoin is. We speculate that amongst other things, Bitcoin widespread relies heavily on education and puncture lies that people have been made to believe that Bitcoin is a scam and that as an unregulated market there are too many risks involved or that fees are high. There were instances when fees were high especially during the parabolic rise of late 2017 but steps have been taken to not only reduce fees through solutions are LN—which is going mainstream thanks to Dorsey contribution, but to urge the public that the network is actually cheaper to use when transferring funds across borders. Then again, Bitcoin is not a scam. Operations are transparent and firms like Chainalysis can actually track transactions making it hard for elements to launder money unlike in banks where billions are lost every year. For this reason, the security, reliability—no down time because of decentralization and transparency of blockchain projects mean platforms as Bitcoin are ready for many individuals especially those in authoritarian regimes or those whose economy are weak or already ravaged by hyper inflation as Venezuela. Therefore, as more and more people join the Bitcoin and blockchain bandwagon, the advantages on offer will only drive the asset price higher rewarding believers. "body": "By Dalmas Ngetich March 9, 2019\n\nThere are perhaps a million reasons why you should, above everything else, be excited as a crypto and more specifically, as a Bitcoin holder. Yes, there are challengers on adoption, regulation and storage—millions of dollars worth of coins stolen through hacks or lost private keys, but in the long term, these coins are jewels.\n\nJust to quantify, statistics from The Global Findex database, a non-profit organization comprehensively studying how adults spend and save with funding from the Melinda and Gates Foundation, revealed that the number of unbanked—that is, adults and qualified individuals who ought to have a bank account and access to other financial services, decreased 20 percent from 2.5 billion to 1.7 billion after 800 million individuals registered for bank accounts between 2014 to 2017.\n\nIt may be because of increasing democratization of banks and high smart phone penetration especially in developing economies but when we look past this number, then there is a lot to be desired. Bitcoin has a reliable, secure and a regulator endorsed settlement layer that makes it a market leader.\n\nBullish Statistics on Crypto and Bitcoin\nAt just 10 years old, tantalizing statistics indicate that by Dec 2018, more than 32 million Bitcoin wallets existed. titleAnalyst: Bitcoin Is a Bull, High Possibility of $5,000 by May
bodyMARTIN YOUNG | MARCH 9, 2019 | 8:30 AM With Bitcoin constantly testing a big resistance zone price predictions are coming thick and fast. The longer BTC stays below the $4,000 barrier the more likely a move to the downside will occur. Some analysts however think it could well move above this in the coming months. Bitcoin in Bullish Territory, Above 0.5 Fib Over the past week Bitcoin has been trading steadily higher above $3,900. However, BTC has failed to break this level since late February when it hit a monthly high of $4,200, but albeit very briefly. An intraday high of $3,950 was touched a few hours ago but Bitcoin fell back instantly to $3,875. Since then it has rapidly recovered back over $3,900 in the past couple of hours indicating bullish momentum. Experienced trader and crypto analyst going by the twitter handle of ‘fil₿fil₿’ has produced another couple of charts to attempt a prediction at further moves for Bitcoin. He states that Bitcoin is a bull and has done enough to show this. The significant thing to note is that BTC has remained above the 0.5 Fibonacci level since February 18. Market action shows repeated patterns recently with inverted head and shoulders being a common one. Three higher lows since December’s dump to $3,200 are also significant. BTC dips have been around $3,400, $3,650 and $3,800, each preceding one lower than the following. Other bullish signals include a MACD cross trending above zero and a Chaikin Money Flow (CMF) indicating strong buying pressure. If Bitcoin breaks below $3,400 it would signal lower lows and more bearish action possibly sending it below $3,000 as many others have predicted. $5,000 a Major Psychological Level If BTC remains above this key 0.5 Fib level it could turn bullish quickly which may result in a run up to $5,000 by May according to ‘fil₿fil₿’s charts. Just as $4k has been, $5k will also be a major psychological resistance level. Other traders have predicted a longer term recovery, possibly by the end of 2019. Using the key long term 61.8 Fib retracement level Bitcoin could bounce off this at $5,000 only to dump again below $1,500 according to this rather extreme scenario. By October 2019 a breakout may occur sending BTC back through this down trend line and through $5,000 again by the end of the year. In 2020 the only way is up as another major bull run has initiated. Price predictions are purely speculation based on previous market actions so should not be taken as gospel. The primary take from nearly all crypto analysts though is that there will be a trend reversal and it is likely to come at some time this year. Until then, happy hodling and accumulating. titleAs Bitcoin Again Approaches $4,000, Could Litecoin Flip Ripple's XRP?
bodyBilly Bambrough Contributor Crypto & Blockchain I write about how bitcoin, crypto, and fintech are changing the world. Bitcoin has been repeatedly trying and failing to break the psychological $4,000 mark, but while the bitcoin price treads water, litecoin and binance coin have been soaring. Litecoin has almost doubled in price so far this year, though it remains well below the all-time high it hit in December 2017. Now, litecoin—one of the oldest rivals to bitcoin, launched in 2011—looks like it could this year overtake Ripple's XRP to break into the top three biggest cryptocurrencies by market capitalization. Litecoin's rapid rise over the last few months, which has been on the up since it hit recent lows of $23 per coin in December last year, has been largely put down to developer efforts to improve security and privacy and several high-profile partnerships. "Litecoin volatility spiked when the Litecoin Foundation announced it's exploring the integration of Mimblewimble, a protocol offering privacy and fungibility to blockchains," a report by cryptocurrency brokerage SFOX read this week. "In March, keep an eye on how privacy news moments impact markets, such as recent revelations over Coinbase’s third-party service provider selling client data." Meanwhile, crisis-hit Venezuela this week launched a government-sanctioned cryptocurrency remittance service, allowing users to send bitcoin and litecoin into the country—somewhat proving litecoin and bitcoin's use case in a country that's becoming reliant on cryptocurrencies. These developments for litecoin could be just getting going, along with an upcoming halving, scheduled for August this year, which will tighten the supply of new litecoin. Previous cryptocurrency halvings have seen prices for their digital tokens rise, though there's no guarantee this will happen again. This week Derek Capo, the CEO of decentralized payment platform TokenPay, and litecoin founder Charlie Lee, will reveal details of their strategic partnership, expected to result in banking services that integrate crypto. Ripple's XRP has meanwhile been on a downward trend since getting a sizeable boost in September last year after Ripple announced a number of tie-ups with big banks that could eventually see XRP, the digital token 60% owned by Ripple, replace Swift as the defacto medium of cross border currency exchange. The outlook for Ripple's XRP has however worsened recently as the new flow of banking partnerships appears to have dried up and U.S. banking giant J.P. Morgan unveiled plans for its own private blockchain-based digital token that would work in a similar way to Ripple's XRP. While litecoin is in the limelight and Ripple's XRP in the doghouse, there's a long way for litecoin to go before it replaces XRP (or perhaps ethereum) has the third biggest cryptocurrency by market cap. Ripple's XRP currency boasts a total value of just over $13 billion, compared to litecoin's $3.5 billion. "The number one real-world usage of litecoin it seems is as a settlement method for crypto-traders," Mati Greenspan, senior market analyst at brokerage eToro wrote in a note to clients this week. "For people who often send money from exchange to exchange to private wallets, it's much cheaper and faster to do this with litecoin than it is with bitcoin. This is why it indeed deserves the title 'digital silver' and with the upcoming halving event in early August, which is likely why it's been outperforming the rest of the crypto markets lately." titleSteemit Competitor Publish0x Wants To Pay Users To Tip
bodyMike Dalton | Last Updated March 8, 2019 | First Posted March 8, 2019 Steemit has become well-known for popularizing crypto tipping by allowing users to donate Steem Dollars to their favorite authors. Many blockchain-based competitors have emerged, including Trybe and Minds, and now a new contender called Publish0x has gone live with a particularly enticing reward scheme. Free Tipping and Rewards Back One feature of Steemit that is not always mentioned is the fact that users who upvote posts and submit comments also get a slice of content rewards—authors do not receive the entirety of every reward. Publish0x is taking this to a new extreme by allowing users to get back as much as 80% of every tip. And, just as with Steemit, users don’t have to buy tokens to begin with. Publish0x is sponsoring its own reward supply and allowing users to tip for free. Currently, the site itself is bearing the cost, but it plans to bring in revenue from external sponsorships in order to keep tips continuously free. In the end, both Steemit and Publish0x are fairly similar. The main difference is that Publish0x’s tipping model doesn’t involve wallet deductions or spending one’s balance. Of course, less popular content will receive more meager rewards, regardless of how the numbers are tallied. An Ongoing Fundraising Model Nevertheless, it costs money to make a service free. Time limits on tipping prevent anyone from gaming the system, and Publish0x also claims to be selective when adding authors. Presumably, limiting the number of authors, which Steemit does not do, will prevent Publish0x’s reward supply from being rapidly depleted. As for revenue, Publish0x is distributing its rewards in the form of an existing token, which means that the site has been able to go live without carrying out an ICO or seeking investors. Instead, Publish0x is looking for projects to sponsor its token supply on an ongoing basis. In return, those sponsors will be able to distribute their own token on the site. This approach may help the site evade some of the traditional obstacles of crypto fundraising. Peepeth, an Ethereum-based Twitter clone, has also used traditional fundraising to avoid the troubles of ICOs. The fact that Publish0x has not had to keep users interested over a lengthy token sale may benefit it greatly. No Relation To 0x Despite what its name might suggest, Publish0x has almost no relation to 0x, which is a major decentralized exchange protocol and top-forty crypto. Instead, Publish0x is using Bounty0x as its reward token. Bounty0x is related to District0x, a marketplace that uses 0x in a limited capacity to power payments. This lineage may be confusing, but the bottom line is that users are not being paid in 0x tokens (ZRX). At the moment, Bounty0x, an Ethereum-based token, is the only token that is available as a reward. The site’s ties to 0x will be stretched even further as it adds other Ethereum-based tokens to the mix. This sort of name-borrowing is fairly common, though, as many crypto projects are not trademarked. The question of which projects deserve to use the word “Bitcoin” is another hot topic, and 0x seems to be similarly en route to becoming a generic crypto name—whether it leads to confusion or not. titleCryptocurrencies for 2019 and Beyond
bodyWith the cryptocurrency markets showing signs of growth for the first time in many months, now is a good time to pick up some new coins/tokens or add to what you already have. But, with over 1200 available, which ones should you hold 2019? Mina Down Mar 9 Now is an exciting time to get into the crypto space because there are lots of affordable options. However, there are currently at least 1,200 different types of coins listed on Coinmarketcap. Which ones will prevail? Which group of coins will survive for the long term? What coin/token should you have now for the year 2019? These are tricky questions because we can only speculate. The technology of the blockchain is obviously here to stay and will be used more and more often in the near future. But which coins/tokens will still be operational in a year from now is much harder to know. As much as possible you should try to look at the big picture when assessing the future of different coins a full year from now. My approach is first to consider what types or groups of coins hold potential for adoption in the near future. For example, I think privacy coins are a solid bet for future uptake. Another group of coins worth looking at are those involved in the integration of social media and blockchain technology. Such bridging projects — projects bridging conventional technology with blockchain and cryptocurrency — will be an important driver for blockchain adoption in the near future. With these thoughts in mind, below are some cryptocurrencies worth looking into for 2019. Ethereum No doubt Ethereum will still be one altcoin to beat in 2019. ETH has become the new standard to beat in low fees and fast transactions. There are also so many ERC20 tokens based on the Ethereum network at the moment that it will thrive for the foreseeable. ETH is something any crypto investor should think about having in 2019. Buy ETH on Binance or Kucoin Privacy Coins Privacy coins are popular in the cryptocurrency world for practical and political reasons. Practically, many people like the idea of being able to transact privately without being surveilled by the state or private corporations. Politically, many cryptocurrency enthusiasts oppose the intrusion of the state into our personal lives and support projects that undermine that power or make it more difficult to apply. If you are interested in looking more into privacy coins, I recommend XMR or PIVX. Both of these are strong projects that have existed for a while. For something newer, you could also look into XSPEC as it will be on another level than the others if it can pull off what it proposes. Buy XMR and PIVX on Binance or Kucoin Buy XSPEC on Livecoin Social Media Integration and Monetization One area where there is immediate potential for blockchain adoption are projects that are trying to bridge existing technology with blockchain. One area where there is a lot of development in this regard is social media integration and monetization. The best projects to look into in this regard I think are TRX, which recently acquired BitTorrent and KIN. Buy TRX on Binance or Kucoin Buy KIN on Fatbtc Investing in New Chains While Ethereum and Bitcoin are the most famous blockchains, there are a number of newer competitors. Some of these are vying to be faster and more efficient than BTC and ETH. Others are tailoring their chains to specific use cases, such as highly regulated markets. If you are interested in investing in new chains, look more into ITC (also known as “China’s IOTA”), IOTA, and ADA. Buy ITC on Kucoin Buy IOTA and ADA on Binance Coins Trying to Replace Fiat The first use case for blockchain technology was executing decentralized financial transactions through the use of cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin was the first cryptocurrency designed for this purpose but since it’s inception several other coins have been developed that are also hoping to replace traditional state-based “fiat” currency. If you are interested in this use case for blockchain, consider looking into XRP and EOS, which are also trying to replace fiat. Buy XRP on Binance Buy EOS on Kucoin Trading Algorithms As the popularity of cryptocurrency trading grows more people are looking to maximize their profits through increasingly sophisticated trading strategies. Given the incredible volatility of cryptocurrency prices right now, many day traders make profits use trading algorithms programmed to track markets trends and make trades under pre-set circumstances. If you are interested in trading algorithms and aid in trading, you can look more into COV (or COVX depending on the exchange and CND. Buy COV on Kucoin Buy CND on Binance Utility Tokens If you are interested in the various kind of applications that are being built on top of blockchain technology, you might want to consider researching utility coins. Utility tokens are used within specific applications, typically to access to a company’s product or service. If utility tokens are interesting to you I recommend looking into THETA and TEL as they both have good potential for the future. Buy THETA on Binance Buy TEL on Kucoin Exchange-Specific Coins Many are predicting that the crypto winter will end in 2019. If this happens it means that many enthusiasts who had taken a break from trading will return. It also means new traders will enter the cryptocurrency space. For these reasons, I think an interesting investment for 2019 is exchange-specific coins. These are coins that are used within specific trading platforms to pay fees. Many exchanges have their own token but I would suggest looking into Binance’s BNB and Kucoin’s KCS this year. Buy KCS on Binance Buy BNB on Kucoin Conclusion There are lots of other coins and tokens that are worth looking at for 2019. The few I mentioned does not exhaust the list. Nonetheless, my goal was to provide some useful starting points to make researching your own investments easier. Good luck! But, with over 1200 available, which ones should you hold 2019?\n\nMina Down\nMar 9\n\nNow is an exciting time to get into the crypto space because there are lots of affordable options. However, there are currently at least 1,200 different types of coins listed on Coinmarketcap. Which ones will prevail? Which group of coins will survive for the long term? What coin/token should you have now for the year 2019?\n\nThese are tricky questions because we can only speculate. The technology of the blockchain is obviously here to stay and will be used more and more often in the near future. Another group of coins worth looking at are those involved in the integration of social media and blockchain technology. titleYour Guide to Blockchain and Cryptocurrency Events at SXSW 2019
bodyBrady Dale Mar 8, 2019 at 20:00 UTC Updated Mar 8, 2019 at 20:45 UTC NEWS It all started with a keynote conversation with Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss in 2016. South by Southwest (SXSW) organizers say that was the first inkling that cryptocurrency could play a leading role in the annual innovation conference in Austin, Texas. Now, in the midst of a prolonged bear market, 2019 will be the first year SXSW will feature an official blockchain and cryptocurrency track, from March 14–16. The Gemini co-founders returned in 2017 and are back again this year, too, speaking Friday evening in a featured session. (The Winklevoss talk takes place well ahead of the official crypto track due to scheduling issues, according to a festival spokesperson.) SXSW is all about being on top of the zeitgeist, Todd Hansen, SXSW’s head of conference programming, told CoinDesk. “It finally, really in a mainstream way, broke through, because everyone was talking about it,” he said, explaining cryptocurrency’s prominent place in this year’s conference. Hansen told CoinDesk that blockchain programming at the 2018 event saw a strong response from festival crowds. Of course, that was just months after BTC had touched $20,000 and initial coin offerings had reached a fever pitch. In that spirit, one company ran a tongue-in-cheek side event on March 11, 2018 called the Initial Taco Offering. For those unfamiliar: SXSW has gotten so big that there’s a whole separate level of programming in off-agenda events that occur across downtown Austin. They range from super exclusive parties to open-to-all workshops. Despite layoffs late last year, the crypto firm with the biggest presence at SXSW 2019 appears to be Brooklyn-based ConsenSys. The ethereum-focused venture studio made its first foray to Austin as a company in 2018. “When we saw Joe Lubin and Laura Shin fill the same 2,000-person auditorium as Elon Musk a few days later, it was a signal that blockchain and Ethereum were transcending tech and finance circles,” ConsenSys spokesperson Kara Miley told CoinDesk in an email. SXSW saw the signal too. This year, the blockchain track starts as the rest of the tech-industry programming tapers off. The organizers are hoping that by running blockchain programming concurrently with the start of the music event it can bring in a second wave of professionals to Austin, effectively extending the innovation summit. Top sessions With SXSW undertaking its first official foray into crypto, CoinDesk wanted to flag a few highlights. People who come mainly for the tech conference but want to dabble in blockchain can stop by the ConsenSys blockchain house, which will run from March 10–14. For a more casual introduction to the topic, ConsenSys will show a short documentary Monday night about using ethereum to clean trash out of Manila Bay. Attendees can also go deeper and experience the blockchain as an extended game. PricewaterhouseCoopers is running a three-hour demonstration that will get participants to play-act as nodes on a ledger. Sadly, it’s already maxed out for RSVPs. As a mainstream tech festival, guests at SXSW care about UX. Getting crypto’s usability up to a level that’s actually attractive to non-techies is a recurring theme in the space. There are two notable design events taking place: consulting firm IDEO will run a workshop on Thursday, March 14, and ConsenSys is organizing a design workshop on Wednesday, March 13 featuring uPort and Coinbase. ConsenSys founder Joseph Lubin will appear in a keynote session again this year, this time in conversation with Manoush Zomorodi of the Civil-backed podcasting company ZigZag. Another of crypto’s big companies, Ripple, will also be featured in a keynote session. CTO David Schwartz will present “Blockchain Beyond the Hype: The Ripple Effect.” For those hungry for a little more drama, Jimmy Song of Blockchain Capital is taking on IBM’s Christopher Ferris in a debate over permissioned vs. permissionless blockchains. Always game for a rhetorical wrestling match, we saw Song debate Lubin at Consensus 2018 on the side of bitcoin maximalism. With SXSW’s music programming taking place nearby, there are also sessions exploring mashups of music and blockchain technology. A cross-industry panel featuring IBM and MIT will dig into progress on the topic. Additionally, a freelance blockchain developer working on Imogen Heap’s long-awaited Mycelia project will give a demo of progress so far. Lastly, SXSW is reputed to be a place where entrepreneurs have a chance to meet investors in a more informal setting. To that end, venture capital will be featured both in the main programming and at the ConsenSys blockchain house. The big event is the Cryptofund Roundtable on Saturday morning. Another way to get funds, though? Steal them. There’s programming on that, too. Breaking through The pressure is on for crypto companies in Austin. Miley, the ConsenSys spokesperson, noted that SXSW is a key chance to reach influential users of the old internet: “It’s a space where technologies can cross the chasm and reach mainstream audiences, and so it’s important for leaders of Web3 to showcase the potential of decentralized technology and build bridges with the leaders of Web2.” But it’s not only crypto-native companies telling their story. Established brands have been working with the technology, too. For example, tech giant IBM will have a large presence in Austin. “A real shift we’re seeing this year is the move beyond the crypto-craze to more enterprise applications of blockchain capability and blockchain business networks,” Jason Kelley, of IBM’s blockchain division, told CoinDesk. “We’re also seeing more evidence of the unlimited potential to tokenize all kinds of assets on the blockchain.” This will be the first SXSW event for Dapper Labs, the company behind CryptoKitties. Dieter Shirley, who invented the ERC-721 non-fungible token standard that made the cats possible, told CoinDesk that he’s up to the challenge of winning over a public that’s interested in these topics but not quite sold yet. “We should focus on getting people excited about the real benefits of this technology, on making this technology more accessible, and ultimately, giving people a reason to care beyond promises of incredible wealth,” he told CoinDesk. “Like every product we create, we want to communicate this in a way that’s fun, interesting and accessible.” Updated with additional comment from IBM.
