Right now Steemit is mostly a niche site with the majority of trending articles from the same people. Steemit allows you to blog, post photos or talk just about anything you like and have the possibility of getting a reward for your effort. The rewards are related to the quality of your content along with the amount of connections you manage to make over time. Original content is valued most of all and content that is copied or not original is often ignored or voted down and marked as spam. If you look at the trending page and see the same people with trending posts on a daily basis you might think Steemit only has a few hundred members. Once you dig deeper down the trending page you start to see a more diverse group of people with vastly different types of content.\n\nI was very excited when the Steemit developers said they would start working on a communities option for the Steemit platform. Having communities will really help Steemit evolve and allow groups of people with similar interests share content that is organized and targeted to the interests of that group. Communities will allow users to work together and help each other improve skills and the quality of content. I have seen quite a few people ask for features that would allow them to customize the type of content they see according to their taste. I expect more features will continue to be present as the platform matures and the user base increases.\n\nOne unique and promising thing about Steemit is the fact that it is built on a blockchain that helps to prevent censorship and a centralized point of failure. This cutting edge technology behind Steemit also allows a reward system that allows users to mine by posting original content. Once the content is posted real people vote on that content to decide what portion of the reward pool is given to each user. Steem power is a factor that helps determine the value of your vote, with the more steem power you have the more valuable your vote becomes. Rewards can be divided into Steem backed dollars and Steem power with steem backed dollars being available now and steem power a more long term proposition that increases your voting value and influence on the network. In reference to the Ripple partnership, Arthur Zhu, CEO of LianLian, said:\n\n    “With RippleNet, we will further enhance that experience and increase our market share by offering customers instant, blockchain-powered payments across the 19 currencies that we currently support. It is republished here as part of a partnership between PRI and Global Voices.\n\nTen-year-old Levi Draheim is a whizz at math, even though he doesn’t particularly like it. He plays a steady Dvořák’s “Humoresque” on the violin and he has a pet crab, JJ. Like most kids, Draheim hates cleaning his room.\n\nYet Draheim isn’t like most 10-year-olds in one main way — he’s suing the United States federal government for violating his constitutional rights by supporting the continued use of fossil fuels that contribute to global warming.\n\nDraheim lives on a barrier island on the state of Florida’s central east coast. Sea level rise projections combined with beach erosion escalation means his home will likely be sitting in water in 30-40 years and his island will likely be completely submerged by the end of the century. It’s a reality even most adults in threatened Florida cities aren’t doing much about, which makes this child’s activism even more unusual.The changing climate is something Draheim has witnessed first hand. When Hurricane Irma ripped through Florida in September 2017, it hit his town of Satellite Beach pretty hard. A week after the hurricane, came a torrential downpour that flooded many streets. Draheim and his family had to evacuate and his street flooded.\n\n“It was so deep that … it was like up to the like middle of the car,” he said.\n\nDraheim’s school also flooded pretty badly and had to close.\n\nBefore the flood, Draheim went to school three days a week and was homeschooled the other two. Going to school was a highlight because he got to hang out with other kids. But he won't get to see these kids as much anymore. The school was damaged beyond repair. So his mom, Leigh-Ann Draheim, has to homeschool him full time for now.\n\nBut that’s the least of her worries.\n\n“Our whole street was under water, we had sandbags out and things like that,” she said. “We’re worried that if it rains hard then we’re going to have that issue again and again.”\n\nThe family lives on what’s called a barrier island, a long thin strip of sand off the mainland. Projections for sea level rise are not good for this part of the Florida coast.\n\n“The barrier island will go away eventually because it’s at sea level,” Leigh-Ann said. Draheim jumped in to explain more.\n\n“Well, there’s like these maps and stuff like that and it shows that this whole entire street will be completely under water. We’re zero feet above sea level. So even if the polar ice caps melt a little bit it will go into the ocean which is going to go into the Indian River Lagoon which is going to flood our home,” Draheim said.\n\nOne natural protection against rising sea levels are solid sand dunes, but even those are eroding in Satellite Beach.\n\nDraheim wanted to show me how the sand dunes, which make like a wall on the Atlantic side of the island, are getting eaten away.\n\nHe and his mom took me to a part of the beach where the dunes are pretty eroded.\n\n“The sign right here says Keep Off the Dunes,” Draheim said.\n\nDraheim doesn’t just talk about climate change, he’s also trying to fight it. Among other things, he and his mom have helped with dune restoration work, planting a type of grass called Sea Oats in the sand.\n\n”[Sea oats] are what really holds the dunes together, like with erosion, the sea oats are all that holds it in, really,” Draheim said.\n\nBut it’s not all work and no play. Draheim can ride his bike to the beach, he boogie boards when he wants. He loves his life here.\n\nYet there’s no denying he’s living the impacts of sea level rise and extreme weather. In many ways, he was a natural to join the 20 other kids from around the country suing the federal government over not doing enough to stop climate change. Of the group, he’s the youngest.\n\n“I think climate change is basically like a national disaster, and it’s going to affect everybody,” Draheim said. “Like in Florida you can see obvious effects, like two hurricanes in the same year and we had to evacuate for that, and beach erosion, stuff like that.”\n\nIn this case, Draheim actually doesn’t have it quite right. Scientists don’t think climate change is causing more hurricanes. But there is evidence that in general, it’s making them and other storms worse.\n\nDraheim is not just a cute young face for the movement. He’s constantly trying to learn more, he said, so he can do more. He listens to the news, pushes his mom to teach him climate concepts at home, and he listens intently when his older plaintiff compatriots talk.\n\nDraheim joined the youth lawsuit by nonprofit, Our Children’s Trust, after his church minister told his mother about it. Leigh-Ann asked Draheim if he wanted to be involved and the then 9-year-old didn’t hesitate.\n\nDraheim and his mom are members of a local Unitarian Universalist church. It’s a pretty relaxed, liberal church. During the mass, Leigh-Ann is barefoot and Draheim bounces a ball the entire service. At morning tea after mass, the congregants discuss Draheim’s activism with pride.\n\nHe’s one of the only kids at church, but he’s treasured.\n\nThe trial is slated to begin February 5, 2018. Draheim said whether they win or lose, he for one hopes that US President Donald Trump is watching.\n\n“It’s kind of hard that the most powerful person in the world denies that climate change is ever a problem and ever will be a problem,” Draheim said. “And so, it’s just kind of hard.”\n\nWhatever happens, Draheim said he’s going to keep fighting. He doesn’t want his island paradise to disappear.\n\nThen he shoots off, razor wheels attached to his shoes, and lands under a blackberry tree where he fills his mouth with sweet, juicy berries.",

Despite all the difficulties posed by life in a war-torn country like Afghanistan, he managed to study International Relations at Kabul University and become fluent in four languages, some of which he taught himself.\n\nIn a different time and place, Asif could easily have become whatever he wished—a professor, a diplomat—but not today, and not in the place in which he is currently forced to stay.\n\nFour years ago, Asif decided to leave Afghanistan, after seeing the situation there becoming more drastically unstable year after year. He left in the hope of reaching Australia, a place to start a new life far from the war. During his journey, he found out that his wife was pregnant. He eventually reached Indonesia, and one month later, while being held captive in a detention center, he became the father of a beautiful little girl whom he has never had the chance to meet. But Asif is not a criminal—he is a refugee detained for the past four years in an immigration detention center in Balikpapan, Indonesia, along with other 183 other people.![Screenshot_20180123-225015-800x450.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmRmgPjaPzrNuC3vDxAuAvseKKSPs8G6HTfpxVJEeC6fA1/Screenshot_20180123-225015-800x450.jpg)The detainees range in age from 14 to 62 years old, and include people from Somalia, Iran, among other countries. 181 of the detainees are Afghan Hazaras, an ethnic group that in the past decades has been targeted by the Taliban, and now by Daesh.\n\nThe Balikpapan detention center is a building fenced around with electrified barbed wire, originally designed to house those charged with crimes such as human smuggling, drug dealing, and cyber-hacking. The Balikpapan inmates are not allowed to study or work, and don't receive adequate medical care. Among them is at least one teenager and many adults who need urgent medical attention.\n\nIn Indonesia, there are 13 immigration detention centers with a total capacity of 1,300 detainees. These detention centers are usually unsanitary, overcrowded and prone to flooding in the rainy season. Since January 17, 2018 the refugees at the detention center in Balikpapan have been protesting against these conditions.\n\nThe refurbishing and enlarging the detention facilities was funded by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), using funds received from several Australian government agencies. Australian NGOs have denounced this “Indonesian Solution”, arguing that their government is paying Jakarta “hundreds of millions of dollars to detain and warehouse asylum seekers. Indonesian law permits immigrants to be detained for up to 10 years without judicial review.\n\nEven though the IOM is not a humanitarian organization and does not have a mandate to assist asylum seekers and refugees, the Indonesian immigration authorities or the UNHCR refer asylum seekers and refugees to its care. In Indonesia, the IOM has effectively been helping Australia manage its border controls, but this is far from the only case where the organisation seems to be going against many aspects of its mission. The IOM has been criticized by researchers for its involvement in humanitarian work and in controversial projects in different parts of the world. In Libya, a country that has yet to recover stability following a NATO-led military intervention in 2011, the IOM has received tens of millions of dollars to bolster a system intended to prevent people from departing for Europe.",
