      "body": "It started with a European Union antitrust investigation into Google Shopping in 2017, which resulted in a €2.42-billion fine. This July, Google received yet another fine from the EU: a record €4.34 billion for “serious illegal behavior” due to the way Google requires Android phone manufacturers to bundle their apps, by default, on every device.\n\nThings went quiet for a while after that ruling, with Google appealing the decision. Now, in lieu of a resolution, Android is about to be ripped apart, and it’s going to hurt all of us—not just people living in the European Union.\n\nAll this is happening because of a skewed perspective from European regulators about how Android actually works.\n\nUntil now, Google distributed Android as a free, open-source operating system that any manufacturer could use, with a catch. If the manufacturer wants to provide access to the Google Play Store, the gateway to billions of Android apps, they must sign a licensing agreement that requires them to bundle Google’s apps along with it and set the company’s search engine as the default.\n\nPhone manufacturers have a clear incentive to use the Play Store: It provides them access to the full library of Android applications, along with the tools that guarantee apps will work across a wide array of hardware without compatibility problems. Called Google Play Services, these tools provide ways for developers to integrate with the Android operating system on a deeper level, as well as allowing access to additional features such as Google’s location services.\n\nAccepting these terms is the price to pay for the cost of Google’s maintenance of the ecosystem, and it has helped maintain a level of consistency for consumers who expect an Android device to ship with a few basic services, like a web browser and messaging app. Google looks after all that for free, and manufacturers are able to take advantage of it to sell their hardware.\n\nEurope has a problem with that because it supposedly suppresses competition—Microsoft’s Bing search engine, I guess. Microsoft can’t pay a company like Nokia to have Bing as the default search engine on its devices because Google won’t license the Play Store without its own search features as the default.\n\nPhone makers can bundle competing apps to their heart’s content, and still do. Samsung has its own storefront on Galaxy phones, for example. The rules only relate to the defaults, and they’re the price of entry: Google maintains and develops Android, pushes the brand forward, and generally does all the heavy lifting. Phone makers benefit from that.\n\nMany of today’s rules and requirements for Android came out of a need for the operating system to be more consistent for the consumer. The earliest iterations of Android were like the Wild West, with devices shipping with all sorts of loopy defaults, alternative browsers, skinned interfaces, and random configurations.\n\nIf you bought a Motorola “Android” phone, you had no idea whether it would look or feel the same—let alone be serviced with updates—compared to an HTC “Android” phone. This made it increasingly confusing to buy any device and know what what to expect out of the box.\n\nGoogle tightened these rules in 2014 as the messy, fragmented experience across Android phone manufacturers made it harder for anyone to compete with the iPhone, which shipped with a slick set of Apple-engineered defaults: “Users generally welcome that kind of consistency across software—just ask an iPhone user—and Google sees this as an opportunity to improve the quality of the Android community that has been plagued by fragmentation,” Recode wrote at the time. “However, it’s an awful lot of Google.”\n\nApple’s default set of iOS apps were predictable, reliable, and well-designed, while some Android phones might have shipped with four different apps called “photos” that did similar things—except the phone maker was paid by app makers to load the non-Google ones onto the device.\n\nEssentially, all this happened because the open approach was a victim of its own success. Everyone ran off in different directions, and Android became a fragmented disarray of preloaded apps, inconsistent manufacturer skins, and buggy experiences. The rules helped rein that in, setting Android on a better path to compete with Apple.\n\nFast-forward to today, when we’re about to see the repercussions of the European Union’s Android fine unravel in hard-to-predict directions.\n\nGoogle just announced that Android licensing will work very differently by the end of the month, completely changing the way the entire model works for phone manufacturers.\n\n“Since the pre-installation of Google Search and Chrome together with our other apps helped us fund the development and free distribution of Android, we will introduce a new paid licensing agreement for smartphones and tablets shipped into the EEA,” Hiroshi Lockheimer, Google’s senior vice president of platforms and ecosystems, wrote in a blog post about the upcoming changes.\n\nTo comply with the EU’s ruling, Google will now charge manufacturers a fee for licensing the Play Store, which will provide access to core apps like Gmail, YouTube, and Maps. A separate optional bundle will add Google Search and Chrome.\n\nAndroid is screwed, and we’re all going to lose as a result.\n\nDevice makers have three options after October 29, when the change comes into effect:\n\nBuild devices with the Play Store and all the Google apps.\nBuild devices with the Play Store and all the Google apps, except Search and Chrome.\nBuild devices without the Play Store or any Google apps and services, or the ability to download them.\nManufacturers will almost certainly pass the additional costs down to you, the consumer, to avoid losing any profit as a result of the new policy. It also means that manufacturers will be quick to take money from app makers to bundle all manner of third-party apps with their new devices, given fresh opportunity to find new revenue. This might mean you get four different browsers on your next device, each of them paying a cut to be there.\n\nPhone makers have been shameless about this before at the expense of the consumer, and they’ll do it again.\n\nWhile all this is happening, Apple is able to sell the iPhone with defaults that can’t be changed by the consumer at all, locking them into a particular set of tools. The only reason this isn’t a problem for the EU is that Apple built a fully-closed ecosystem, on its own devices, so it isn’t dictating decisions for any third-party manufacturer—because no third party can make an iPhone.\n\nAndroid, ripped apart by the EU’s ruling, will struggle to compete in a world where every device is an unpredictable slurry of preinstalled detritus and inconsistent experiences.\n\nThere’s a hole in the EU’s argument too. If the rules were so suffocating to competition, it’s hard to understand how Amazon is able to do exactly what the EU says is too hard: creating a custom, Google-free version of Android, forgoing the Play Store, and succeeding anyway.\n\nThis entire case is eerily similar to how Microsoft v. the EU Commission played out a decade ago. That case resulted in the hellscape that was the “browser choice” popup on Windows, ultimately making things more confusing for everyone. When new users installed Windows in Europe, they were presented with a popup with an array of browsers to choose from, but it just made the experience more convoluted. It did, ultimately, lead to the decline of Internet Explorer—but almost guaranteed Chrome’s ultimate rise to success, ironically.\n\nLike Microsoft, Google became a victim of its own success. Chrome controls 66 percent of browser share, and Google dominates 90 percent of all search. Unlike Microsoft back then, Google already controls the majority of the market, and it’s unlikely that the EU’s antitrust action will do much at all: People want those tools and have come to rely on them.\n\nTargeting Google, killing bundling, and focusing on “competition” on the Android platform misses the entire point: both Search and Chrome are already far too big to fail.       "body": "“It is to cities what flour is to bread, what cells are to our bodies: the invisible but fundamental ingredient that makes up the bulk of the built environment in which most of us live.“\n— Vince Beiser, author of “The World in a Grain: The Story of Sand and How It Transformed Civilization”\nThink of a valuable resource. What images come into your mind’s eye? Maybe oil? Water? Perhaps you looked at a ring on your finger and thought of gold. All of these are valuable resources, it’s true.\n\nNow, what if I told you sand was also an incredibly rare and precious resource? It may sound absurd, especially if you’ve been anywhere near a beach or desert lately, but the world is running out of sand. A crucial material in everything from cellphones to high-rises, the resource is being used up faster than it can replenish itself, sparking environmental concerns and community conflicts. Some are even willing to kill for it.\n\nYou may not realize it, but nearly everything around you is built with sand. The concrete your apartment, condo, or house is made out of was mixed with sand. The glass windows you look through to see what the weather looks like — those were made with sand as well. The cellphone or computer you’re reading this on — the silicon chips in them are made with sand. The road you travel on to work — sand as well. If you live in any kind of urban setting, it is constructed with sand.\n\n\nCredit: Sand Stories\nSand Isn’t as Plentiful as You Think\nYou may be thinking: But sand is everywhere, there are whole deserts filled with the stuff.\n\nThe sand in a desert, though, is useless as a construction material. The grains are out in the open and blow around for thousands of years. This rounds them off until they become useless as building blocks. Imagine trying to make a building with golf balls. In order to build, sand with angular edges must be used. The preferential type is the kind found in a river bed, sea, or beach.\n\nThe fact that desert sand is useless makes for some unexpected situations. Despite being surrounded by endless miles of sand, the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, was built with sand imported from Australia. Dubai also imports sand for its beaches from Australia. Apparently desert sand doesn’t do well in a beach atmosphere either.\n\nSand also regenerates slowly. It takes thousands upon thousands of years for rock and sediment to break down into the usable grains we all rely on.\n\nConstruction’s Endless Appetite for Sand\nThe world has seen a construction boom in recent years. The base that boom is built on, quite literally, is concrete. The United Nations estimates that the world consumes more than 40 billion tons of building aggregate — sand, gravel, and crushed stone — each year. Some estimates predict consumption will top 50 billion tons by next year, with China alone gobbling up much of the world’s concrete supply as it undergoes a massive urbanization. According to data from the U.S. Geological Survey, between 2011 and 2013 China used more concrete than the U.S. used throughout the entire 20th century. Other parts of Asia, such as India, are rapidly expanding as well.\n\nThe urbanization driving this construction boom, and increasing reliance on concrete, shows no signs of slowing. By 2030 the U.N. expects 60 percent of the world’s population to live in urban areas.\n\n“Sand mafias” are groups of criminals that illegally dredge sand from areas where extraction is prohibited.\nSand is also used for reclamation projects — reclaiming land from the sea. Singapore is probably the most extreme example. Since 1960, the country has expanded its landmass from 581.5 to 721.5 square kilometers. By some estimates, reclaiming one square kilometer requires up to 37.5 million cubic meters of sand. In an effort to accommodate a growing population and rising sea levels, Singapore plans to add another 40 square kilometers by 2030, though officials say they are turning to methods that will reduce the need for imported sand.\n\nThe Sand Business Attracts the Criminal Underworld\nOne of the prime issues with sand is that it’s heavy. Heavy items incur large transportation costs, especially over a long distance. The scarcity and high prices attract the attention of criminals. Why go to a legal mining area when sand can be extracted for next to nothing elsewhere?\n\n“Sand mafias” are groups of criminals that illegally dredge sand from areas where extraction is prohibited. Since they’re not following laws, all environmental protocols are ignored. Often rivers are illegally mined, destroying the habitat for fish and fisherman. Sometimes land from private villages is even taken over by these mafias.\n\nIf they’re confronted, violence often results. And according to a 2015 Wired story on sand mafias in India, police are typically of little help: “The conventional wisdom says that many local authorities accept bribes from the sand miners to stay out of their business — and not infrequently, are involved in the business themselves.”\n\nThis problem is particularly rampant in India. A number of murders have allegedly been committed by these sand mafias to keep journalists and agitators quiet. In a recent murder, journalist Sandeep Sharma was run over by a truck after he secretly filmed a police official agreeing to a bribe in exchange for allowing sand mining in a crocodile sanctuary. According to the editor of the local television channel where Sharma worked, he was denied police protection after receiving threats. The editor also told the Guardian that police confiscated Sharma’s camera with footage of the bribe agreement and never gave it back.\n\n\nIn another murder in 2013, Paleram Chauhan was shot multiple times by masked assailants in his own bedroom. According to Wired, his family is certain they know who the killers are. About 10 years prior, as India’s building boom got underway, a sand mafia had arrived at Chauhan’s village. The mafia seized 200 acres of communal land, tore up the topsoil, and started digging up the sand. Though it is illegal to steal a village’s land, not to mention sand mining is banned in the area due to a nearby bird sanctuary, local authorities did nothing when Chauhan approached them for help.\n\nChauhan kept up the pressure though, and eventually, one of the members of this mafia was put in jail, then quickly released. As Chauhan’s son told the Australian news show Foreign Correspondent, this member threatened Chauhan after his release, telling him to back down or his family would be killed. A week later, Chauhan was killed.\n\nThe head of this sand mafia and his sons were arrested for the murder, but released on bail. When the Australian reporting team visited Chauhan’s son last year, they found the man who allegedly threatened his father still mining in the village.\n\nThese are only a couple of the murders that have been committed in pursuit of yellow grains. People are actually killing each other for sand.\n\nAre We Doomed to Run Out of Sand?\nYou might be feeling depressed right about now. The world is going to run out of sand, there will be chaos in the streets, and sand mafias will kick down your front door to steal your kid’s sandbox.\n\nAlright, I’m making light of a potentially terrible situation. But the world has encountered terrible situations before and managed to pull through. Early 1800s economists explored a theory called the law of diminishing returns in an attempt to explain why grain prices were falling. In the classic example of this theory, Thomas Malthus used a field of land and a farmer. As the farmer adds more labor to the field, he gets improved output, but only to a degree. Eventually, his returns diminish as he adds more and more labor.\n\nMany looked at this theory and concluded that humanity would inevitably starve to death. As the population increased, food production wouldn’t keep up. It is now widely recognized, though, that Malthus missed something critical — technology.\n\nJust as criminal cockroaches will crawl out from under rocks to terrorize villagers and take their sand for a profit, this demand and scarcity will call for innovation.\nTechnology can greatly offset this law of diminishing returns by increasing productivity. Through today’s technology, areas of the world that have always been net importers of food are becoming net exporters. Hybrid seeds, fertilizers, farming techniques, and pesticides have fought back the diminished returns from a plot of land and increased yields to levels previously thought impossible.\n\nJust as criminal cockroaches will crawl out from under rocks to terrorize villagers and take their sand for a profit, this demand and scarcity will call for innovation. Brilliant minds in search of riches and problems to solve will find solutions. In fact, a possible solution may have already come about. Four college students in England have developed a material called Finite, a concrete alternative made of desert sand. It’s as strong as residential concrete and capable of being melted down and recycled. It is just a prototype currently, but it looks promising.\n\nSand is definitely a perishable resource. If humanity continues to use it at its current pace, the world’s supply will likely be depleted. However, the situation is far from hopeless. Technology has been used in multiple industries to change predicted ends to various other resources — sand shouldn’t be any different.\n\nIf efforts were taken to use sand more efficiently in building, this would be a major first step to progress. In addition, the use of technology to find sand substitutes would be another game changer. Just from a quick internet search, it appears that a number of concrete substitutes are already pushing forward to fill this need.\n\nSand may be a limited resource, but the human mind is only limited by its imagination.
