titleUSPS Once Attempted to Deliver Mail via Rocket
body![steem it 2.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmbgiNTZsd9akZ8hApEF8Kox3BDzx2h1d22Frs1H7t7Jsu/steem%20it%202.png) Most of us are familiar with the seemingly arduous few days wait of a highly anticipated parcel. In 1959, as new methods for faster mail transportation were being sought, one experimental delivery by the USPS's predecessor, Post Office Department, could have changed that. Dubbed 'Missile Mail', the USPS enlisted a U.S. Navy submarine, USS Barbero, to launch a cruise missile loaded with mail. The missile travelled at 600 miles per hour and reached its destination over 100 miles away in about 22 minutes. Previously, the missile had been intended to be delivered with a nuclear payload, but the warhead compartments were replaced with mail containers. The Postmaster General, Arthur E. Summerfield, declared the event to be "of historic significance to the peoples of the entire world". He predicted that "before man reaches the moon, mail will be delivered within hours from New York to California, to Britain, to India or Australia by guided missiles. We stand on the threshold of rocket mail." Unfortunately, 'Missile Mail' never came to fruition for the general public. The Department of Defense saw the test as a demostration of U.S. missile capabilities, and experts believed that the cost was too high to be justifiable.

titleDerinkuyu Underground City: Man Knocked Wall Down in Basement, Discovered HUGE Underground City
body![steam.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmQYNEGqW61Ht7MLy3d3Zr6WYvXmt7NL1A4UgM8d6Vc1Xf/steam.png) In 1963, a man found a mysterious room behind a wall in his home that leads to a huge underground city that once housed up to 20,000 people, complete with schools, livestock pens, and food stores, dating back over a millennium. In 1963, a man in the Derinkuyu district in the Nevşehir Province, Turkey, unknowingly discovered one of the largest underground, multi-level cities ever, after he knocked down a wall in his house and discovered a room that leads to the amazing archaeological wonder. It was built into soft rock over a millennium ago by people unknown, but the Turkish Department of Culture claims that the Phrygians may have built caves in the area as far back as the 8th - 7th centuries B.C. Due to artifacts from numerous eras and peoples being found in the caves, such as those from Zoroastrians, Christians, and Muslims, it's hard to pinpoint the city's exact origins. The entrance could be sealed off with giant stone doors in times of urgent need and it had the potential to shelter about 20,000 people, plus room for their livestock and food. The complex is complete with ventilation shafts and goes down almost 200 feet into the Earth. Each level could be closed off separately. It's a generally-accepted theory that the underground city was used over centuries by different people during times of conflict. Other underground cities have been found across Cappadocia, but Derinkuyu is by far the largest and most extraordinary. Since 1969, the tunnels to the underground are open to the public and can be visited by tourists today.

titleBATTLE OF HAMPTON ROADS 1862
body![hr.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdSCfjnJPnqiWyRP3eah7FLtNRKcLaMRvHqrWgRML6VnP/hr.png) BATTLE OF HAMPTON ROADS The March 9th, 1862, the battle between the Monitor and the Merrimack (CSS Virginia) during the American Civil War (1861-65) was history’s first duel between ironclad warships. The engagement, known as the Battle of Hampton Roads, was part of a Confederate effort to break the Union blockade of Southern ports, including Norfolk and Richmond, Virginia, that had been imposed at the start of the war. Though the battle itself was inconclusive, it began a new era in naval warfare. USS Merrimack Rechristened the CSS Virginia The CSS Virginia was originally the USS Merrimack, a 40-gun frigate launched in 1855. The Merrimack served in the Caribbean and was the flagship of the Pacific Fleet in the late 1850s. In early 1860, the ship was decommissioned for extensive repairs at the Gosport Navy Yard in Norfolk, Virginia. The vessel was still there when the Civil War began in April 1861, and Union sailors sank the ship as the yard was evacuated. Six weeks later, a salvage company raised the ship and the Confederates began rebuilding it. Did you know? The design of the USS Monitor was so innovative, that when it was launched the ship featured more than 40 different newly patented inventions. The Confederates covered the ship in heavy armor plating above the waterline and outfitted it with powerful guns. Rechristened the Virginia, it was a formidable vessel when launched in February 1862. On March 8, the Virginia sunk two Union ships and ran one aground off Hampton Roads in southeastern Virginia. Battle of Hampton Roads: March 9, 1862 The next day, the USS Monitor steamed into the Chesapeake Bay. Designed by Swedish engineer John Ericsson, the vessel had an unusually low profile, rising from the water only 18 inches. The flat iron deck had a 20-foot cylindrical turret rising from the middle of the ship; the turret housed two 11-inch Dahlgren guns. TheMonitor had a draft of less than 11 feet so it could operate in the shallow harbors and rivers of the South. It was commissioned on February 25, 1862, and arrived at the Chesapeake Bay just in time to engage the Virginia. The battle between the Virginia and the Monitor began on the morning of March 9 and continued for four hours. The ships circled one another, jockeying for position as they fired their guns. However, the cannonballs simply deflected off the iron ships. In the early afternoon, the Virginia pulled back to Norfolk. Neither ship was seriously damaged, but the Monitor effectively ended the short reign of terror that the Confederate ironclad had brought to the Union navy. The Monitor and the Merrimack: Final Days Both ships met ignominious ends. When the Yankees invaded the James Peninsula two months after the Battle of Hampton Roads, the retreating Confederates scuttled the Virginia. The Monitor went down in bad weather off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, at the end of the year. In 1973, the wreck of the Monitor was discovered at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. Many artifacts from the vessel have since been recovered and are on display at the Mariners’ Museum in Newport News, Virginia. Though they had short lives, the two ironclads ushered in a new era in naval warfare.

The engagement, known as the Battle of Hampton Roads, was part of a Confederate effort to break the Union blockade of Southern ports, including Norfolk and Richmond, Virginia, that had been imposed at the start of the war. Though the battle itself was inconclusive, it began a new era in naval warfare.\n\n \n USS Merrimack Rechristened the CSS Virginia\n\n The CSS Virginia was originally the USS Merrimack, a 40-gun frigate launched in 1855. Six weeks later, a salvage company raised the ship and the Confederates began rebuilding it.\n Did you know? The design of the USS Monitor was so innovative, that when it was launched the ship featured more than 40 different newly patented inventions.\n The Confederates covered the ship in heavy armor plating above the waterline and outfitted it with powerful guns. Rechristened the Virginia, it was a formidable vessel when launched in February 1862. On March 8, the Virginia sunk two Union ships and ran one aground off Hampton Roads in southeastern Virginia.\n\n Battle of Hampton Roads: March 9, 1862\n\n The next day, the USS Monitor steamed into the Chesapeake Bay. titleThe Battle of South Mills, NC
bodyBATTLE OF SOUTH MILLS, NC ![SOUTH MILLS.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmPa1Mo2kYNoTobsbTdpUULSNWH32LbtdqXucahagtXSJ8/SOUTH%20MILLS.png) April 19, 1862, dawned sultry-hot with thunderstorms growling in the distance as 3,000 Union and 1,000 Confederate soldiers converged on a nearby cornfield in Camden County. Marching from the South in their own sandy dust were Union forces that had disembarked from federal troopships where the Pasquotank River gently embraces Albemarle Sound. Rolling along with the Yankees were three wagonloads - 4,000 pounds - of gunpowder that was to be used to blow up the Culpepper Locks on the Dismal Swamp Canal near South Mills. The canal was a major Confederate supply line to battlefronts in the north. At the same time, about 1,000 Rebel troops sent to halt the Yankees were double-timing down from the Suffolk, Va., area to throw up defenses in the Camden cornfield. There were far bigger Civil War fights in 1862, including Shiloh in Tennessee, where peach trees bloomed red with soldiers' blood, and Antietam in Maryland, where a little white church stood amid a ghastly congregation of Blue and Gray corpses. But the Battle of South Mills was one of the first fights to create the Confederate mystique that still stirs the hearts of Yank and Reb descendants. The outnumbered Confederates got to South Mills first and had time to create breastworks along a ditch at the north end of the cornfield. The ditch is still there, and not much else has changed. About 300 yards in front of Confederate Col. Ambrose Wright's dug-in Georgians was another ditch, and before the battle started the Confederates filled it with fence rails and set them on fire. The blazing, mile-long trench was known as "The Roasted Ditch" in official reports from both sides. What little wind there was that day was from the northwest, and smoke and flames from the ditch blew into the faces of advancing Union soldiers and smoke-screened the Confederate defense. Wright's second in command at South Mills was Col. Dennis D. Ferebee, a farmer-lawyer from a clan of Ferebees still settled around Camden and Currituck Counties. When violent rain squalls ended the day at South Mills, the outnumbered Confederate soldiers had fought so furiously that the Yankees broke off the battle and left the field. Union officers called it a tactical withdrawal. The Confederates still held their lines, but they, too, began falling back to stronger positions in the evening after their artillery commander was killed. Altogether, six Confederates and 13 Union soldiers died at South Mills, almost a funereal joke by Civil War standards. But both sides - then and now - insist on calling it a victory. Union Brig. Gen. Jesse Reno, a West Point graduate, had brought the Federals up to South Mills from New Bern, which, with Roanoke Island, had earlier been captured by larger Union forces under Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnside. Burnside's whiskers - sideburns - are probably better known today than the hairy warrior who fought all over the map for the United States Army. Reno was a veteran of the Mexican War, but at 39 this was his first divisional command. His battle plan was to embark his Union troops at Roanoke Island and New Bern, sail to Camden County, and march 10 miles north to the Culpepper Locks above South Mills. The locks were a short distance above the present South Mills locks, and only a month before the Confederate ironclad Virginia and the USS Monitor had dueled in Hampton Roads waters near Norfolk. Union commanders felt the destruction of the Culpepper Locks would block the Dismal Swamp Canal and prevent the Confederacy from moving ironclads down to Albemarle Sound. Reno's second in command was Col. Rush Hawkins, a hot-headed 32-year-old commander of the 9th New York Regiment. Also under his command were elements of other Union forces from New York, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. Hawkins "often had difficulty with senior officers," according to Col. Jerry V. Witt, a retired regular Army officer who in 1992 wrote one of the few detailed accounts of the South Mills battle. Hawkins' troopships arrived first at the Camden County landing area, and by the dawn of April 19, his brigades had successfully waded ashore and started marching north. The road they took generally followed the path of modern-day N.C. Highway -343. A war correspondent for a New York City newspaper wrote: "It was a lovely morning; birds were skipping from one green bough to another as if attracted to our beautiful colors . . ." But April in Camden County can be more summery than springlike. "The sun rose over the trees like a great red ball of flame, or angry spirit mercilessly threatening a scorching day. . . ," the correspondent continued. "All went struggling and gasping along, weighted down . . . wondering at what men could endure and survive. . . . Many sank . . . overcome by heat and left to recover as best they could. . . ." Reno and Hawkins, after many misadventures, arrived at the cornfield and were soon brought under Confederate artillery fire. Reno began edging his forces to the right to work around the Confederate left flank. By then "The Roasted Ditch" was sending up clouds of smoke in front of the Confederate lines. What happened next has puzzled military historians ever since. After Reno sent two couriers with personal orders to Hawkins to close ranks with Reno's forces up ahead, Hawkins, suddenly ordered his 9th New York regiment to charge through the smoke and attack the Confederate position beyond. The Rebels were ready. "It was then as if some superhuman hand, capable of holding bushels of bullets and grapeshot in the palm, was hurling them upon us," Pvt. Charles Johnson, of the 9th New York, wrote after the battle. "Every inch of the air seemed thick with messengers of death. The roar of cannon, the rattle of musketry, yells of combatants, shrieks of the dying, groans of the wounded, all commingling into one horrible din! Fearful! Terrible! Indescribable!" At about that moment, a musket ball pierced Johnson's wrist. He said he thought: "Well if this is the only one I'm going to get, I'm lucky." Johnson lived to tell more terrible tales. In the midst of the fight, Julius Langbien, a 15-year old German-born drummer boy with the 9th New York, saw one of his officers, Lt. Tom Bartholemew, fall with a bullet in his head. Langbien ran to help the fallen officer and later received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his bravery. The private fight between Reno and Hawkins after South Mills lasted longer than the fighting. Hawkins went over Reno's head and filed his own report of the battle to Burnside, the Union commander. Hawkins claimed the whole Union expedition had been a disaster that failed to accomplish the mission of blowing up the Culpepper Locks. Confederates "ran like quarter horses toward Norfolk," Hawkins wrote, but so had the Federals, "as fast as our weary legs would carry us." Johnson, he of the wounded wrist, later described what he saw in a farmhouse that had been turned into a Union battle dressing station: "Men mutilated in every way were lying about, those who could, standing, others stretched out on blankets patiently waiting for the doctor, who was busy dressing the worst cases . . . "There, among a motley lot of suffering men lay Adjutant (Charles A.) Gadsden, of the 9th New York, with as serene a countenance as if he were lying in his own tent. "I spoke to him: `Adjutant, this is rather hard, and your first, too.' " `Yes,' he answered, `It is my first and it is hard.' "I have often asked myself if he knew then that he was going to die within the half-hour . . ." Then, finally, the rains came in torrents and the battle sputtered to an end with surprisingly few casualties. Nineteen soldiers died in both armies, 120 were wounded and 16 were listed as "missing." By 10 p.m., Reno had his weary Union soldiers marching back down the road toward the troopships at the south end of Camden County. When the Confederates discovered the Union troops had left the field, they also fell back to stronger emplacements to marvel at how they had saved the day - and the Culpepper Locks - with so few casualties. In the end, Burnside declared the battle of South Mills "a complete victory" for the Federals and commended Reno for his "strict observance of orders when the temptation to follow the retreating enemy was so great."

titleThe Battle Of Yorktown, Virginia 1781 (The birth of a nation)
bodyBATTLE OF YORKTOWN, VA ![YORK.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQme24aZGtvHreBeEWyGhJkVEQeUfqkvLbCXvgA3nArgUrp/YORK.png) By the summer of 1781, the United States had been at war with England for over six years. The first shots had been fired in April 1775 on the village green in Lexington and at North Bridge in Concord, Massachusetts. Merely sustaining the army had been a major accomplishment for the Americans, who did not have much money, food or clothing. The winters of 1777-78 at Valley Forge and 1779-80 at Morristown were particularly devastating, with many soldiers freezing and starving to death, and some giving up and returning home. A deep belief in the cause and an enduring faith in their leader, George Washington, kept this army together. In the summer of 1780, the Americans received a major boost to their cause when 5,500 French troops, commanded by Comte de Rochambeau, arrived at Newport, Rhode Island. France had been sending supplies to the United States all along, but after France and England declared war against each other in 1778, French King Louis XVI sent troops and naval assistance to the United States to engage the enemy. When Rochambeau’s forces arrived, the British were operating on two fronts. General Clinton, commander of British forces in North America, was occupying New York City after a largely unsuccessful attempt to control the northern and middle colonies. General Lord Cornwallis was leading through the southern colonies an army that had already captured Savannah and Charleston. The main American army under Washington was stationed along the Hudson River above New York City. In the spring of 1781, Washington traveled to Rhode Island to meet with Comte de Rochambeau and plan an attack on Clinton. A French fleet was expected to arrive in New York later that summer, and Washington wanted to coordinate the attack with the fleet's arrival. As planned, Rochambeau's army marched in July and joined with Washington's troops outside New York City, only to learn that the French fleet was sailing to the lower Chesapeake Bay.
