      "body": "Christmas is celebrated worldwide, regardless of culture or belief – even by inhabitants of the Malaysian rainforest. While we hunt through shopping malls for gifts and climb rooves putting up Christmas lights and decorations, the aborigines of Malaysia deep in the mountain forests of Pahang have their own preparations to do.\n\nAbout 150 miles from the capital of Pahang and in the heart of the Malaysian peninsula, lies Kampung Bakok (Bakok Village) – a native village, home to several indigenous families, known locally as ‘Orang Asli’. This village is one of the few in Malaysia to have a church in it, along with several Christian families. We arrived at the village just as lunch was being prepared – that is, for the entire village. They hunt wild boars and grow their own fruits and vegetables – so it was really heart-warming to see them prepare meals for the entire village, as well as visitors from other nearby villages. \n\nWhere else would you find people cooking for others free of charge, when they live off so little themselves. Rafi, the local pastor along with volunteers from the church had organised a Christmas performance. That’s an electric guitar, a base, a drum kit, and microphones, and just below the stage is the rest of the sound system. Some of the equipment were provided by us, while the rest belonged to the locals, from other charities and such. The most interesting part is that the natives taught themselves to play the instruments, and they were great at it.\n\nWithout the privilege of music lessons and YouTube tutorials, the locals here learn through trial and error, and play by ear. They practice and gain more experience playing together during worship sessions at church. This really made me laugh at how I couldn’t master a single instrument in all my years of practicing. We had prepared lunch boxes and biscuit tins for every adult from Bakok village and the visiting neighbours, while the children received goodie bags of candy. They have motorcycles, electricity, water and plumbing, zinc roof tiles, mobile phones, and many other things one wouldn’t expect to find in a native village. \n\nThe reason behind this is, they aren’t as isolated from society as I had originally thought. Just like the rest of us, they work and trade for the necessities they want and need. The main difference is that they’re living in the forest, and they need to take advantage of the resources available to them to balance out the drawbacks of living in a remote area. Going out to towns to buy the equipment they need and transporting it back up the steep, narrow mountainous road to their village is not an easy task, so we were glad to help as much as we can. \n\nChristmas is truly a season of giving, and seeing the smiles on their faces and passion in which they celebrate Christmas was really moving and humbling.  \n\n![Native Kids.JPG](https://steemitimages.com/DQmahAs5YKRQm43rvoA81k1ofMMRDXzTdTFi6yxoDLJuwPn/Native%20Kids.JPG)\n\nAll in all, it was a wholesome and enlightening experience to celebrate Christmas deep in the rainforest of Malaysia.
