      "body": "After an extended vacation (and some much needed free time) I was finally able to sit down and watch a couple of films. One of them being the historical musical, which is not Hamilton…\nhttps://giphy.com/gifs/Nsrxn8kks7Z8k/html5\n\nThe Greatest Showman, written by Jenny Bicks and Bill Condon, and directed by Michael Gracey is a musical about the life of P.T. Barnum and the formation of the Barnum & Bailey Circus, and to be fair, I really wanted to love this film, I wanted to prove that the hype was real, and that my hours listening to the soundtrack would be validated by an amazing film; unfortunately, this film leaves much to be desired in several key aspects that make it a fully enjoyable film.\nBut hey, it got awards, not bad for a first time director eh?\n\nThe Good\nRight off the bat, the film has a strong opening sequence, having the editing and the first musical number complement each other to create an energetic moment within the film; furthermore, there are several moment which the editing and the music have mingle very well in order to show an amazing scene between two characters, or to highlight the mood of a specific person.\nIn terms of choreography, they filmmakers did a fantastic job. From directing, filming and editing the film, one of the major gems of this film is its use of choreography within the film, ranging from “simple” dances in the beginning to having two actors singing and acting while hoisted up in the air \nActing-wise, the cast did a fantastic job, Hugh Jackman does a fantastic job playing a charming P.T. Barnum. Zac Efron does a fantastic job playing as a counterbalance to Jackman's Barnum. Overall from the child actors to the background cast, nobody in the film disappoints, from their musical numbers to their acting moments, everyone involved in the film did a fantastic job. \n\nThe Bad\nAs much as I love the way this film is acted and directed in several scenes, the biggest issue I have with this film is its feeling of incompletion. There were some instances in the film that had characters in conflict with one another, or would imply tension between two people and never acknowledge within the film again ( there was an instance when Barnum snubs his circus cast and we never hear from it nor see any actual repercussions within the film, they simply ignore an important moment).\nStaging the camera in certain musical numbers seemed to be an issue as well, granted this is a musical, with people dancing and moving around to deliver an amazing choreographed scene; however, while I understand that its trying to show as much as it can in certain scenes, it felt static and uninteresting in certain musical numbers (there was one scene that followed at least 4 different camera shots and they alternated around them, understandable at best, but it felt boring compared to other scenes that were similar)\nVFX-wise there were some very obvious scenes that could have been given more time to make look more realistic (the animals, some buildings, etc.); however, given that this is a musical, and my assumption is that the money went more towards the choreography and music, I’m not going to complain about it as much as I normally do.\n\nConclusion:\nThe Greatest Showman has a lot of hype to its name, its trailers depict the struggle of a man creating the american circus amidst a crowd of bigoted people who despise the freakish nature of the people involved; however, the film doesn’t live up to the expectations that the trailers give, nor does it feel like a complete project, rather leaving much to be desired in terms of character development and interaction. Its score and musical numbers are amazing and wonderful to watch an listen to, and the cast provides a wonderful range of musical talent that it puts recent films of a similar genre to shame (*cough* La La Land *cough*). But it feels as if its ambitious size has left much to be desired from a story standpoint. If you want to go in expecting a fantastic story with amazing musical numbers, then you will be sorely disappointed; however, if you want songs that will stick in your head for a while and and expertly choreographed scenes then this film is up your alley.\n\nBut that’s just Juan opinion among many...\n\nhttps://giphy.com/gifs/6y038xO1p06He/html5",
