      "body": "Some people have taken the Fear of Missing Out to a subprime mortgage extent, and done such things as taken out a mortgage to buy more Bitcoin:\nhttps://cointelegraph.com/news/bitcoin-feeding-frenzy-sees-people-put-their-house-on-it\n\nWhen an experimental asset or venture shows up, it will filter for more risk-seeking individuals.  That's natural and predictable.  And a subset of those will take their risk-seeking to unconditional extremes, such as taking on credit card debt to buy more.  And of the people who do that, some of them do well.\n\nBut what if Bitcoin happened to go down 80% or more? That has happened.  Though I would claim that the odds of that happening are lower at this point; believe it or not, Bitcoin has become less volatile over time.\n\nLosing your life savings to a disaster is already pretty harsh on your long-term quality of life.  But if anything goes wrong in the leveraged scenario and you lose your investment, you are still going to spend years paying that mortgage, for nothing.  Your potential losses become qualitatively different, in a deeply alarming way.  People doing this with Bitcoin may have done well so far, but historically, people who use such methods are prone to getting blown up unexpectedly.\n\nFurther, think about which type of society you want to live in.  A society where people will collectively get very leveraged and indebted is a society that is more prone to bubbles, financial disasters and waste.  I want to live in a society where other people's risk-taking won't also put me in a recession.  That's just as true for crypto as for traditional assets.\n\nDon't be in that group.  You should be able to accept that there is a greater than zero chance of your crypto investment going to zero, whether through a hack, theft or some catastrophe.  And in the subset of worlds where that happens, and you bet your house on it or maxed out a few credit cards, you are hurting very badly for a long time.  It's already high-risk to put my savings there; no need to start doing daredevil stunts that would eventually and destroy me.",

      "body": "Like anyone else interested in cryptocurrencies, it would be ideal and great if secure, efficient scaling could be implemented tomorrow.  And it sure feels tempting to cry out \"hurry up with the lightning network!\".  And to be clear, Bitcoin must implement serious scaling in the not-too distance future, or else they really would lose out to a competitor.  And maybe there are some politics within the Bitcoin community holding back scaling to some extent.\n\nBut make sure that you also care greatly that the new scaling methods are tested *very* thoroughly, and that the security is maintained.  Off-chain scaling will increase the complexity of the network, and it is an opportunity for a major bug or vulnerability to cause ruin.  And the implementation would have to be quite late in order to be a worse situation than a ruinous implementation.\n\nSeveral implementations of the Lightning Network are in development, and I'm looking forward to it.  But I think a lot of people in the Bitcoin space are underestimating the advantages of not jumping too quickly.  There are other cryptocurrencies that have made some rather willy-nilly jumps in trying things, and I wouldn't touch them with a ten-foot pole.\n\nOngoing, careful and meticulous will give the best results.  And hats off to the developers working on this.",

      "body": "The offline storage wallet that I've been using is the Ledger Nano S.  It works, is legit, and wasn't too expensive.\n\nOne problem I had was that it didn't want to synchronize with the Chrome Ledger app for some reason.  What worked for me was to switch users on my laptop, download the Chrome app on that computer account, and access the wallet there.  I'm guessing that a program on my usual computer account was blocking Ledger somehow.\n\nAlso, for Ethereum you might have to change the Contract or Browser settings on in the Ethereum wallet app.  For some reason the default settings were set up so I couldn't use it, and I had to enable something to be able to log into the wallet on the Chrome app.  Seems like a strange choice of default settings, unless there is some technical reason I'm not aware of (which is possible).\n\nOne thing that made me slightly uncomfortable is the fact that it's an electronic device with a USB cable, and I figure that repeated use would eventually deteriorate certain parts catastrophically.  This is an reasonable fact, and in practice shouldn't be such a problem since I won't be using it more than once a month.  But that aspect did make me slightly envy paper storage.  In reality, the worst case scenario is that every ten years or more, you buy another one.  And ten years from now, the crypto market will likely have made things easier and more accessible anyway.\n\nThus, it has so far been working, and I have significant holdings on there.  It generates random recovery words during setup just in case the building burns down, or I forget my pin number, or the wallet gets stolen, or I drop it in a toilet, et cetera.  Next I just need a small metal safe to stick it in, and all should be well.",

      "body": "It's no secret that the cryptospace has a boatload of thinly-veiled scams at the moment.  I would like to draw attention to one of the more obvious and straightforward ones, which is called doubledouble.io and which I had the disappointment of coming across recently.\n\nFor those who were raised by wolves, make no mistake: don't touch a ponzi scheme with a twenty-foot pole, ever.  It involves you giving someone $100, with the instruction that if you can just convince a few other people to give you money and do the same, then you make money.  If you're wondering why we don't all do this and get rich, it's because eventually the system runs out of people to fool.  So that last (and largest) portion of participants loses money.  It's a bit like the lottery: another tax on the gullible.  If for some bizarre reason you needed the world to have those, there's an endless river of them.\n\nFrom the doubledoubleio subreddit, someone commented and asked how this is different from a pyramid scheme.  Look at the slimy words that spewed from Doubledouble's proverbial mouth:\n\n>**Well, you can call it as you wish.** We see it as an instrument that gives people opportunity to participate in such type of scheme securely. **Let's be honest, money just flow from one hands to other.** Today there is a ton of such projects online and offline. And it is always your choice to take part in it or not. But there are questions about the security of your money in the most of these projects. Our solution is based on Ethereum smart contracts so it guarantees that your money will be always protected. A bit harder if they are poor, but I do it whether they are rich or poor, educated or not, well-dressed or not.\n\nThey are giving up money that took effort to earn, in exchange for something that has negative expected value.  Even if you bought every single ticket and thus was guaranteed to win, you would still lose money because the amount that you pay into the lottery company would be much more than what you would win.  I'm sure the lottery company (and the government that they pay taxes to) is glad you bought tickets, and they'll play ads that make it seem like you're buying your way to a better life and a better world.  You aren't.\n\nYou literally end up with more money by stuffing it under your mattress than buying lottery tickets, even with inflation.  And it's not hard to think of better investments than fiat cash left under the mattress.\n\nWorse, if you try to explain this to some people, they point to the rare outlying person who wins, and forget about everyone else who bought tickets and got nothing.
