Presenta un dimorfismo sexual marcado, siendo los machos de menor tamaño que las hembras. Una hembra adulta puede llegar a pesar 50 Kg y su caparazón medir entre 70 y 100 cm de longitud. El caparazón es café oscuro o negro, aplanado y ensanchado, y la armadura del pecho varía entre oscuro y crema amarillo. Es netamente acuática solo las hembras abandonan los cursos de agua para anidar en los bancos de arena y playas que se forman durante la temporada de sequia.</p></div>\n\n\n<div class=\"text-justify\">\n<p>Su distribución es amplia en las cuencas de los ríos amazonas, Orinoco y esequibo. Ha sido registrada en Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Brasil, Ecuador, Bolivia y Perú. Es probable su presencia en Surinam y Guayana francesa, pero no ha sido confirmada. En Venezuela se encuentra a lo largo del rio Orinoco y sus tributarios principales, desde el alto Orinoco en el estado amazonas hasta su salida al mar en delta Amacuro. Aprincipios del siglo XX. Humboldt estimó una población de 330 mil hembras reproductoras, pero a mediados del siglo XX quedaban 123 mil, en los últimos 50 años el proceso se ha acelerado 36.100 tortugas anidaron en 1950; 13800 en 1965; 4400 en 1981 y 991 en 2003. En Venezuela existen 3 areas de anidación conocidas: Rio Meta, brazo Casiquiare y Orinoco medio, siendo esta ultima la mas importante y mejor estudiada. Escudería concurrente de la Federación Internacional de Automovilismo (FIA) y el Touring y Automóvil Club de Venezuela.\n<ol>\n***TIPS PARA EL CONDUCTOR  DE @TEAMAZIMUT ***\n\n**1.**  Según diversos estudios, el uso del teléfono móvil es un factor que multiplica por cuatro el riesgo de sufrir accidentes.\n\n**2.**  Ten siempre en tu vehículo un botiquín de primeros auxilios y triangulo de seguridad ante cualquier incidente en la vía.\n\n**3.**  Mantén los neumáticos con una presión de aire adecuada.\n\n**4.**  La velocidad máxima para cruces, intersecciones y zonas escolares es 30 km. Controla la velocidad del vehículo, sea carro o moto.\n\n**5.**  Nunca trates de ganarle a la luz del semáforo.
