| title | Eating Raw Herring in Amsterdam |
| body | Eating raw herring in Amsterdam is about as Dutch as it gets, bar wearing clogs at the same time and downing a Heineken afterwards. To some it may sound gross and disgusting, while to others it will sound delicious, especially if you like sashimi (raw fish in Japan). I love sashimi and sushi so for me it’s a no-brainer that it’s good for my taste buds. I’ve had it a few times over the years, and whenever I visit Amsterdam I always go back to the same haringhandel (herring stall) at the Albert Cuyp Market. This has been a family run stall since 1916 and many tourists, as well as locals, stop by and devour some of the raw fish. In the Netherlands people have been eating this for centuries. Like I said if you don’t like fish this will gross you out even if it wasn’t raw. However if you like fish but are not sure about eating it raw then give it a go, you may be surprised. The traditional Dutch way to eat raw herring is by holding your head back and letting it slip down your throat while you bite at it. Nom nom nom. You eat the fish first with a few onions on and then the pickle afterwards. I personally prefer having no onions as it takes away the taste of the fish, but like a pickle afterwards to reset the taste buds. The raw herring in Amsterdam, or the Netherlands for that matter, is a snack and not a main meal. You can find these small haringhandel stalls all over the place as the Dutch love them. Tourists came and went while I hanged around the stall, as they thought over whether they should give it a go. One woman was seriously trying to come up with an excuse to her husband on why she shouldn’t eat it. She failed and tried a piece, and the facial expression was priceless. I only wished I had gotten a photo of the reaction. |

| title | The Japanese Soul Food Okonomiyaki is One of the Best Things You Can Eat in Japan |
| body | Okonomiyaki is a word I would remember well after coming to Hiroshima in Japan. Ever heard of it? I hadn’t, until arriving there myself and hearing that it was the one thing I must try. It is a savoury Japanese pancake and comes mostly from the Hiroshima and the Osaka regions, although is available across Japan. The name okonomiyaki basically means “as you like it on the grill”, and it is a very popular street food dish. It’s regarded as Japanese soul food and is delicious. The first thing you need to know is that there are many different varieties of okonomiyaki out there. I visited a famous okonomiyaki building in Hiroshima called okonomimura that has three floors of around 25 different eateries. Each of those eateries specialise in their own version. You sit around a large grill with other customers and place your order of what you want (or in my case just pointing to the persons food next to me as I couldn’t read the menu), and then watch them cook it up from scratch. The chefs are masters at their trade, cooking many dishes at a time. If you ever make it to Japan someday, which I hope you will, then remember to try this food. If you are lucky enough there may be an okonomiyaki restaurant near you! |

| title | Why Last Minute Fuck It Decisions Can Often Be the Best |
| body | Ok I figured I needed to get an opinion piece out there, or whatever you may call it. I need to tell you some of the thoughts that go around my never resting travel brain. You can pick my brain so to speak, as I would love to hear your thoughts on this post in the comments. The main thought right now is how last minute unplanned decisions can end up being the best ones you ever make. Whether it be travel, or life in general, it can be a hell of a lot more fun with the quick “fuck it, let’s do it” mentality. Fuck it. When I started travelling all the way back in 1997 (seems like soooo long ago now) it was partly because I was unsure what to do with my life. I was 20 years old, a lot of my friends had gone to university or were trying to get themselves into a career, my best friend had just gone to jail (mental breakdown after his dad died sent him in the wrong direction), and the general clubbing party scene of London (I’m British) was not as great as the early-mid 90’s, my party heyday. Has dance music been the same since? Anyway. I had always had the feeling to travel (I guess from my upbringing moving around countries) and happened to see in a bookstore a guidebook by LetsGo saying how I could see Egypt on $10-15. Fuck it I thought. lets do it! So I got a crappy job in a factory for a few months packing boxes to get enough money for a few months of travel and the rest is history. Within the first few days in Cairo I got a job as a film extra in Egyptian movies. 18 years later and I’m still abroad. I left to travel like so many young people to experience new things, but also to try and figure out what to do in life. Travel is a form of escapism, which I learned very quickly and realised I wanted this to be my lifestyle, this was what I wanted in life – to see and experience everything life has to offer. Sometimes you just have to go for it and take the risk. If I had not taken that fast decision to say fuck everything I knew and just go, then who knows what may have happened in my life. I would not change anything that has happened in my life, it all leads to new things. The opportunities that travel can bring. Since I started travelling I have generally lived by the same rule of making last minute decisions when I travel, as it’s a lot more fun being spontaneous. For example one of the best travel experiences I ever had was hanging out with tribes in the Central Papuan Highlands back in 2006. It came about while I was aimlessly wandering around Sulawesi Island in Indonesia, when I came across a Polish couple who had hiked and stayed with tribes in the middle of nowhere in Papua. Their stories convinced me and the very next day I was on a flight to the Papuan coast, followed by a flight to the central highlands. Next thing I knew I was staying with these tribes way away from anything and having a mass celebration feast with thousands of tribal people and not another tourist in sight. All that came about from a quick last minute decision just to go, and got me one of my favourite travel photos ever. After travelling down from Ethiopia to South Africa overland I was hanging out in Cape Town not sure where to go next. I started searching for cheap flights around the world to practically everywhere. I found one leaving the next day to Singapore for very cheap and just booked it and went. Upon arriving in Singapore I still didn’t know what to do (I had been in Singapore 10 times before that) so checked cheap flights around Asia. Before I knew it I was finally in Japan and seeing one of the best countries I’ve ever been to. All that from a quick last minute “fuck it, let’s do it” decision. I ended up living in Amsterdam for a long time and using it as a base for travelling from. It all happened back in early 2000 when I was in Tel Aviv in Israel and at the time I thought I would pop back to England to work, and asked a travel agent for a cheap flight to London. Street travel agents… the old days… Anyway they didn’t have a cheap flight to London for a few days but had a very cheap flight that evening to Amsterdam, and I figured I could get a cheap bus to London from there. So with a quick decision I headed to Amsterdam. Arriving with a bottle of vodka from Israel I got taken to an illegal hostel from the train station. I met the owner of the hostel, who was a bit crazy to be honest, but we downed the whole bottle of vodka and talked shit before I vaguely remember going out and having a look around Amsterdam’s Red Light District. The rest of the night is a blur – honest! The next day I woke up in the dorm room of the hostel with a serious hangover and the owner telling me I had to get out and work. Work? Yes it turns out in my drunken stupor I had mentioned that I was going to London to look for work as my money was running out and I needed some money to keep travelling. He had offered me a job working for him bringing backpackers from the station to his hostel, and I had accepted. Again the “fuck it, lest do it” mentality came into affect and I stayed in Amsterdam. Some of my best life memories come from my times in Amsterdam. Life was good. I even ran my own business for a while there, all of that would never have come about if I hadn’t made a last minute decision. Everything in life happens for a reason. You’ve probably heard that phrase a gazillion times, but it can be very true. One more short story on the fun of not knowing what to do and just going along with the flow. I visited the Arctic up in Svalbard, somewhere I had wanted to go for a long time, but was put off by the costs. I was up in Iceland in January, a pretty cold time to be around that part of the world, and figured if I’m getting cold I might as well try and keep the same vibe going. So jumping on Skyscanner and other flight search engines I started searching for cheap flights and was super happy to find a really cheap flight to Edinburgh, fly over to Oslo, and then up to Svalbard. Awesome! Only problem was that once there things get seriously expensive, with the few hotels that exist costing around $200 a night upwards. Fuck that for a budget traveller. But then I was super happy to find couchsurfers way up in Arctic! Got to love couchsurfing. One local guy said he could put me up for a few nights, so I thought I would just go for a short time, the flights were cheap enough anyway. Within the few days there I had met some of his friends while out drinking and a girl offered me to stay with her. So I ended up staying a few weeks in the Arctic in the middle of winter going dog-sledding, seeing the Northern Lights, ice caving, going drinking in some of the more surreal bars I have been to. All that again from some quick last minute decision, and I managed to do a whole lot of stuff I had always wanted to do, as well as meeting some fun new friends. My opinion is: Following your heart leads to a gut feeling that often comes with a last minute decision, and often that decision will be the right one, because it’s what your mind is screaming at you to do. Not sure about college/university? Well naturally you could take a year out and travel the world while figuring out if you want to go to college/university etc. Bored with your current career and yearn for something else? You would be surprised at the amount of opportunities that travelling can bring. Would you prefer to teach English in Japan and learn a new culture and be totally blown away by a new experience? Everything is possible and waiting for you. Of course for some people it will be easier due to their circumstances with where they are from etc. I know people from Poland who taught English in China for a year and then went travelling with the money they saved. I know people who had a stressful job at home and ended up quitting, took their savings and set up a cheap hostel in the Philippines. Hell I know people who travel the world playing poker to fund their trip. Start blogging, you never know, you could make it. It could happen in a year, or it could take a few. Just don’t give up. Never give up to do the things you want to do, work at it and reach for the dream. Even now I need to force myself to keep making these last minute decisions to keep me going in the right direction. Getting out of the comfort zone. It may sound easy to say, but I’ve said it before that it’s not easy, but how the hell will you know if you don’t try. Sometimes it can be more difficult to make this decision, if you have children or a career for example you need to obviously think more. But for those unattached you have the perfect freedom. So for all of you out there who have come across this post and are trying to figure things out in life, from the young beginning their journey, to the older looking for a change, you will never know if you can make the change you want until you just go for it. It can be scary. It can be hard. But – It can be life changing. |

"title": "Why Last Minute Fuck It Decisions Can Often Be the Best",
"body": "\n\n\nOk I figured I needed to get an opinion piece out there, or whatever you may call it. I need to tell you some of the thoughts that go around my never resting travel brain. You can pick my brain so to speak, as I would love to hear your thoughts on this post in the comments.\n\nThe main thought right now is how last minute unplanned decisions can end up being the best ones you ever make. Whether it be travel, or life in general, it can be a hell of a lot more fun with the quick “fuck it, let’s do it” mentality.\n\nFuck it.\n\nWhen I started travelling all the way back in 1997 (seems like soooo long ago now) it was partly because I was unsure what to do with my life. Anyway.\n\nI had always had the feeling to travel (I guess from my upbringing moving around countries) and happened to see in a bookstore a guidebook by LetsGo saying how I could see Egypt on $10-15.\n\nFuck it I thought. lets do it!\n\nSo I got a crappy job in a factory for a few months packing boxes to get enough money for a few months of travel and the rest is history. Within the first few days in Cairo I got a job as a film extra in Egyptian movies. 18 years later and I’m still abroad.\n\nI left to travel like so many young people to experience new things, but also to try and figure out what to do in life.\nTravel is a form of escapism, which I learned very quickly and realised I wanted this to be my lifestyle, this was what I wanted in life – to see and experience everything life has to offer. \n\nSometimes you just have to go for it and take the risk. If I had not taken that fast decision to say fuck everything I knew and just go, then who knows what may have happened in my life. I would not change anything that has happened in my life, it all leads to new things.\n\nThe opportunities that travel can bring.\n\nSince I started travelling I have generally lived by the same rule of making last minute decisions when I travel, as it’s a lot more fun being spontaneous. Their stories convinced me and the very next day I was on a flight to the Papuan coast, followed by a flight to the central highlands.\n\nNext thing I knew I was staying with these tribes way away from anything and having a mass celebration feast with thousands of tribal people and not another tourist in sight. All that came about from a quick last minute decision just to go, and got me one of my favourite travel photos ever.\n\nAfter travelling down from Ethiopia to South Africa overland I was hanging out in Cape Town not sure where to go next. I started searching for cheap flights around the world to practically everywhere. I found one leaving the next day to Singapore for very cheap and just booked it and went. Upon arriving in Singapore I still didn’t know what to do (I had been in Singapore 10 times before that) so checked cheap flights around Asia.\n\nBefore I knew it I was finally in Japan and seeing one of the best countries I’ve ever been to.\nAll that from a quick last minute “fuck it, let’s do it” decision.\n\nI ended up living in Amsterdam for a long time and using it as a base for travelling from. It all happened back in early 2000 when I was in Tel Aviv in Israel and at the time I thought I would pop back to England to work, and asked a travel agent for a cheap flight to London. Street travel agents… the old days…\n\nAnyway they didn’t have a cheap flight to London for a few days but had a very cheap flight that evening to Amsterdam, and I figured I could get a cheap bus to London from there. So with a quick decision I headed to Amsterdam. Arriving with a bottle of vodka from Israel I got taken to an illegal hostel from the train station.\n\nI met the owner of the hostel, who was a bit crazy to be honest, but we downed the whole bottle of vodka and talked shit before I vaguely remember going out and having a look around Amsterdam’s Red Light District. The rest of the night is a blur – honest!\n\nThe next day I woke up in the dorm room of the hostel with a serious hangover and the owner telling me I had to get out and work. Work? Yes it turns out in my drunken stupor I had mentioned that I was going to London to look for work as my money was running out and I needed some money to keep travelling. He had offered me a job working for him bringing backpackers from the station to his hostel, and I had accepted.\n\nAgain the “fuck it, lest do it” mentality came into affect and I stayed in Amsterdam. Some of my best life memories come from my times in Amsterdam. Life was good. I even ran my own business for a while there, all of that would never have come about if I hadn’t made a last minute decision.\n\nEverything in life happens for a reason. You’ve probably heard that phrase a gazillion times, but it can be very true.\n\nOne more short story on the fun of not knowing what to do and just going along with the flow. I visited the Arctic up in Svalbard, somewhere I had wanted to go for a long time, but was put off by the costs. I was up in Iceland in January, a pretty cold time to be around that part of the world, and figured if I’m getting cold I might as well try and keep the same vibe going.\n\nSo jumping on Skyscanner and other flight search engines I started searching for cheap flights and was super happy to find a really cheap flight to Edinburgh, fly over to Oslo, and then up to Svalbard. Awesome! Only problem was that once there things get seriously expensive, with the few hotels that exist costing around $200 a night upwards. Fuck that for a budget traveller.\n\nBut then I was super happy to find couchsurfers way up in Arctic! Got to love couchsurfing. One local guy said he could put me up for a few nights, so I thought I would just go for a short time, the flights were cheap enough anyway.\nWithin the few days there I had met some of his friends while out drinking and a girl offered me to stay with her. So I ended up staying a few weeks in the Arctic in the middle of winter going dog-sledding, seeing the Northern Lights, ice caving, going drinking in some of the more surreal bars I have been to.\n\nAll that again from some quick last minute decision, and I managed to do a whole lot of stuff I had always wanted to do, as well as meeting some fun new friends.\n\nMy opinion is:\n\nFollowing your heart leads to a gut feeling that often comes with a last minute decision, and often that decision will be the right one, because it’s what your mind is screaming at you to do.\n\nNot sure about college/university? Well naturally you could take a year out and travel the world while figuring out if you want to go to college/university etc.\n\nBored with your current career and yearn for something else? You would be surprised at the amount of opportunities that travelling can bring.\n\nWould you prefer to teach English in Japan and learn a new culture and be totally blown away by a new experience?\nEverything is possible and waiting for you.\n\nOf course for some people it will be easier due to their circumstances with where they are from etc.\n\nI know people from Poland who taught English in China for a year and then went travelling with the money they saved.\nI know people who had a stressful job at home and ended up quitting, took their savings and set up a cheap hostel in the Philippines. Hell I know people who travel the world playing poker to fund their trip.\n\nStart blogging, you never know, you could make it. It could happen in a year, or it could take a few. Just don’t give up. Never give up to do the things you want to do, work at it and reach for the dream.\n\nEven now I need to force myself to keep making these last minute decisions to keep me going in the right direction. Getting out of the comfort zone. It may sound easy to say, but I’ve said it before that it’s not easy, but how the hell will you know if you don’t try. Sometimes it can be more difficult to make this decision, if you have children or a career for example you need to obviously think more.\n\nBut for those unattached you have the perfect freedom. So for all of you out there who have come across this post and are trying to figure things out in life, from the young beginning their journey, to the older looking for a change, you will never know if you can make the change you want until you just go for it.\n\nIt can be scary. It can be hard. But –\n\nIt can be life changing.",

| title | 10 Cheapest Backpacking Destinations in Asia |
| body | These are some of the cheapest backpacking destinations in Asia that you can visit. Backpacking is one of the best ways to see a country as travelling cheaply not only saves you money to be able to travel more, but can also bring you closer to the people of the places you go to. I have visited almost all the countries in Asia over the past 20 years and these 10 countries are the ones I recommend the most for being cheap places to travel in Asia, and also for the variety of things to see and do. Some of these make great backpacking destinations for beginners and some are the best places to backpack alone. Bear in mind that “cheapest backpacking destinations” is for the overall cost of general travel. Start adding activities to that and the skies the limit on what you could spend. But these are some of the best places to go backpacking cheaply and make for some great budget trips in Asia. KYRGYZSTAN It’s cheap to travel and also small in size so easy to get around, allowing you to see a lot in a short period of time. The prime reason to visit Kyrgyzstan is to get into the mountains. There you can go trekking and stay with nomads in traditional yurts. If you’re feeling slightly lazy you can also do horse trekking instead. There are plenty of cultural things to experience in the summer months, especially every 2 years when the World Nomad Games are held. Kyrgyzstan is also the easiest country to enter Central Asia as you get a visa on arrival and the cheapest flights to the region go to its capital, Bishkek. INDIA India is the ultimate backpacking destination in Asia. It can be very overwhelming and somewhat of a love/hate relationship so may not be the best for a beginner starting out backpacking. But if you just go ahead and dive into the full on intensity then India has absolutely everything you could imagine to offer the backpacker. Not surprisingly it has the reputation as being one of the cheapest backpacking destinations in the world, never-mind just in Asia. It has beaches, mountains, jungle, deserts, culture, food, and so much more. And being so large the vibe changes as you move around, with the south being more relaxed with its beach life, the main cities being seriously full on hectic, and the north getting colder in the mountains and more of a Buddhist feeling in parts. THAILAND Just as India can be one of the hardest countries for a beginner backpacker, Thailand is one of the easiest, in fact one of the best backpacking destinations for beginners in Asia. It’s been a backpackers haven for many years and yet, outside of the main tourist spots and party places, retains its unique Thai charm. Although mostly known for its famed beaches, some of the best experiences can be found in the north of the country in the mountainous areas. It’s still very affordable being one of the cheapest backpacking destinations, especially in the north, and some of the cheapest flights into Southeast-Asia come into Bangkok. NEPAL You could put Nepal and India under the same category as they are very similar in price and for similar mountain experiences. But Nepal is home to some of the highest mountains in the world, including Everest, so makes for the perfect backpacking destination in Asia to go for long treks, such as the Annapurna circuit and the Everest three passes basecamp trek. If you want to get away from the mountains then there is also the lowland areas where you can see wildlife such as in Chitwan National Park. Also Pokhara is a very relaxed town next to a lake which makes a good place to unwind for a while after some hard trekking. Sri Lanka Another one of those perfect small countries as one of the cheapest backpacking destinations, just like Kyrgyzstan. You could call it a mini-India as they are very familiar, although I found Sri Lanka to be less intense and more friendly than its larger neighbour. For such a small size it offers almost everything except snow capped mountain peaks and desert. You have the famous surfing beaches and the surf culture that goes with it. Hiking in the highland areas. Ancient cities. Tasty food. And the excellent railway network to get you around. It has one of the cutest railway journeys in the world, as you can dangle your legs out of the open doors as the train meanders along slowly through the highlands, as you watch women in the fields picking tea leafs. INDONESIA Indonesia is massive with over 17,000 islands to explore. Most travellers stick to Bali, Java, and the surrounding islands near them, but get off the beaten path and there is so much more to backpacking in Indonesia. Now I say it’s cheap to go backpacking in Indonesia, and for the most part it is one of the cheapest backpacking destinations in Asia, but it all depends on where you go. If you want to get to very remote areas, like Raja Ampat which is known for its excellent diving, then it will end up costing more due to the difficulties of getting there and around. It’s the kind of backpacking destination that sucks you in for more. I have spent around 10 months travelling in Indonesia and there is so much more still to see. LAOS Southeast-Asia in general is a great place for budget backpacking, and the classic backpackers circuit generally evolves around Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and maybe Malaysia. I didn’t include Cambodia in this list as I want to give options in other parts of Asia, and to be honest it was my least favourite country out of the ones I have been to that I’ve mentioned here (although it’s still good to visit). Laos is on the list for it’s diversity, beautiful mountain areas for hiking, chilled vibe, backpacker scene without to many “party” areas, and friendly people. If anything add the small city of Luang Prabang as a few days trip from a neighbouring country to get a feel for the place. It has some of the best temples to see and one fo the most beautiful waterfalls I have been to. VIETNAM Oh Vietnamese coffee. I know you shouldn’t really judge a country on one thing, but I could easily go back to Vietnam just for the coffee, never-mind the spicy delicious soups. It is a great country for renting or buying a motorbike and travelling across the country on it. That’s what many backpackers do if they have time. If you end up buying a motorbike you should have no problem selling it on to another traveller at the end. In fact it’s most likely that you bought the motorbike from another backpacker! Otherwise there is a good network of buses and trains. Like backpacking in most of the rest of Southeast-Asia you will have good hiking areas, vibrant cities to visit, beaches, culture, and more. And yes it’s very cheap like all the others as one of the cheapest backpacking destinations. MALAYSIA Sadly most backpackers stick to just Peninsula Malaysia for backpacking, going along the classic route of Singapore up to Thailand, or vice-versa. Yes you can find highland areas for hiking, awesome food in the big cities, cultural gems, and islands with perfect beaches. But some of the best adventures to be had can be found in Borneo Malaysia in Sarawak and Sabah. There you can climb Mount Kinabalu, go caving, go hiking in the highlands and jungle, see orang-utans, take a small boat up a jungle river, and so much more. Oh, and some of the best diving in the world can be found at Sipidan Island and around that area if diving is your thing. Borneo Malaysia can easily be reached with budget airlines from Kuala Lumpur so you really should put it on your list for not only one of the cheapest backpacking destinations, but also for its adventure. IRAN This is a seriously off the beaten path destination for backpackers and yet super cheap and friendly, with so much to see. Yes there government is a bunch of assholes, but the people themselves are generally welcoming and friendly to foreigners. In fact it’s because of the people that I highly recommend to go to Iran and not just because it’s one of the cheapest backpacking destinations. It’s mostly well known for its historic cities like Esfahan, and its massive deserts. But there is plenty of mountainous areas to explore as well. So that gives you a good idea of some of the cheapest backpacking destinations in Asia. |
