| body | What the Top 100 companies in the US are saying about Crypto and Blockchain All photos labeled for reuse. In the United States, the top companies in the country are usually defined as those listed on the stock exchanges, such as the NASDAQ or Dow Jones. Collectively, they are referred to as Wall Street. Given the power and influence of these companies, what they say and do, and how they react to natural disasters, changes in legislation or currently Presidential tweets holds a lot of weight. As far as market capitalization is concerned, the Fortune 500 list has long been the measuring stick for the wealthiest companies in the country. Most of these countries raise money through the sale of stock, and thus are public. One of the many responsibilities of public companies is to release earnings and financial data, strategies and more to stock holders, the Securities and Exchange Commission and the general public. The release of this information comes across many documents, however, two particular documents provide a wealth of information. These are the 10-K and the 10-Q. Today, there are a lot of headlines speculating on companies adopting cryptocurrencies or using blockchain. However, while these headlines often border between news and rumors. These headlines also often times don’t even reference any public disclosures or otherwise announcements from individuals in or representing the company. Despite the seemingly endless swirls of speculation, one can look at the aforementioned documents to see what companies are saying to their investors in regards to cryptocurrency and blockchain. For the sake of this article, I looked at the top 100 of the Fortune 500 and searched for four terms and their derivatives. These terms include, “crypto,” “Bitcoin,” Blockchain,” and “smart contracts.” I searched 10-Ks, which are annual documents that are required by law to be sent to the SEC and available to investors by publicly held companies. This document is typically found on a company’s website under “Investor Relations,” and may come alone or be included in the company’s annual report. Because annual reports are made available at different times of the year depending on a company’s fiscal calendar, I also searched each company’s most recent 10-Q. A 10-Q is the company’s required quarterly documentation, but usually includes much less data and information than the 10-K. To the results. Read more here https://channels.cc/u/X8Kxz |

"body": "What the Top 100 companies in the US are saying about Crypto and Blockchain\n\nAll photos labeled for reuse.\n\n\n\nIn the United States, the top companies in the country are usually defined as those listed on the stock exchanges, such as the NASDAQ or Dow Jones. Collectively, they are referred to as Wall Street. Given the power and influence of these companies, what they say and do, and how they react to natural disasters, changes in legislation or currently Presidential tweets holds a lot of weight.\n\n\nAs far as market capitalization is concerned, the Fortune 500 list has long been the measuring stick for the wealthiest companies in the country. These are the 10-K and the 10-Q.\n\nToday, there are a lot of headlines speculating on companies adopting cryptocurrencies or using blockchain. However, while these headlines often border between news and rumors. These headlines also often times don’t even reference any public disclosures or otherwise announcements from individuals in or representing the company. Despite the seemingly endless swirls of speculation, one can look at the aforementioned documents to see what companies are saying to their investors in regards to cryptocurrency and blockchain.\n\nFor the sake of this article, I looked at the top 100 of the Fortune 500 and searched for four terms and their derivatives. A 10-Q is the company’s required quarterly documentation, but usually includes much less data and information than the 10-K.\n\nTo the results.\n\nRead more here\nhttps://channels.cc/u/X8Kxz",

| title | How To Invest In Blockchain Without Buying Crypto |
| body | Reducing risk and confusion, while investing in the future In spite of all the news around blockchain and cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, most still confuse the two terms thinking they are the same thing. Because of growing acceptance across governments, organizations and businesses that blockchain is a technology of the future, many want to grab their piece of the pie before it’s too late. Behavioral economists call this phenomenon the fear of missing out or FOMO. Critics of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies blame FOMO for what they perceive as unbridled and unfounded interest, which saw Bitcoin prices blast past $17,000 by the end of 2017. They probably have unfinished novels in their filing cabinets and travel plans bookmarked on their browser too. One of the great things about crypto investing is that it doesn’t require vast sums of money unlike investments in real estate or even many stock options. Even though Bitcoin is still trading between $8,000 and $9,000, one can buy fractions of Bitcoin and either hold onto the investment or buy smaller coins, known as altcoins. | body | I wrote this piece for a publication about motherhood. Naturally, I wrote it with a dark twist. Warning: Some may find this disturbing. Some strong language, however, no violence or sex. All photos labeled for reuse. “No one loves you, you dirty little bitch. The only reason anyone ever cleans you is to keep your damn mouth shut for two seconds.” The harsh dialogue spoken in a woman’s warm voice seemed like the work of a sadistic casting director. The woman’s hands rubbed the young, wiggling body with restrained affection. Pudgy arms and pudgier legs squirmed, their wide eyed owner eager to practice using them after months of being confined to an embryonic prison. “Yeah, you’re fat and you’ll always be fat. And the other girls will mock you. You’ll end up cutting yourself and…” The woman’s voice ended in a mumble. She was getting too good at this, and that was what was scaring her. The infant stared back, cross eyed in wonder before blowing a bubble and giggling uncontrollably. “Oh, you think that’s funny? Will you think that’s funny when none of the boys want to touch you? Not even if you were plastered and he was coming out after five years behind bars. Don’t plan on moving in with me. Eighteen and done. The state can’t force me to care for your whiny, needy ass.” For a moment the infant’s forehead burrowed. Seconds later the muscles relaxed and the baby shrieked in delight as if it just heard the funniest thing in the world. Jackie Whittier turned away. She couldn’t take it anymore. It felt wrong. She was a terrible mom. Of course, she hadn’t planned on being one; at least, not now. That’s what she got for trusting a man all her friends and family tried to tell her was no good. No, she had to be stubborn. She wouldn’t; no, couldn’t listen to them. She had been seventeen and figured that was enough life experience to make adult decisions. And that’s what it was; her decision. The guy could have been any guy. But it was the guy everyone else said wasn’t good enough. That alone was good enough for her. Yet, he took the first ride out of town once he was done with her. All men could. Sure, they’d be considered dicks and cowards. But a mother abandoning her baby was much worse. It was taboo. She looked down at a reflection of what she remembered of her own baby pictures. At least, the baby hadn’t taken much from the father. Still, a foreign feeling followed her, one in which she struggled between wanting to strangle the little body squirming on the changing table and hugging it and making a thousand promises on how her life would turn out better. After all, even if it only had half of her DNA, it would be raised by her. “Don’t grab her,” the therapist’s words rattled in her head. “Only when you’re Jackie, the loving, caring mother you want to be, can you grab her.” Weeks passed since their last session. The state’s program that paid for them was cut. The middle aged woman who bit the ends of her glasses and wore neatly tailored clothes was much different than she imagined when she finally relented and went. The woman was professional, put together, not the typical worn-out government worker juggling dozens of cases at once. Still, there was something about the woman. Despite her credentials and soothing, all-knowing voice, Jackie still kept an emotional arm’s length away from her. The emotional disconnect she had with the life she created was present from the third time the drugstore pregnancy test came back positive. The few friends and family members she had left told her it was normal. They assured her that as the baby grew inside her, so would her anticipation of motherhood. They told her she would feel different when the baby came. They told her all the stress and headache and regret would disappear replaced by something instinctive and natural. “That’s nonsense,” the cold, stoic voice of the therapist had said when she brought it up one session. “There are no such things as mother’s instincts. It is simply a tall tale told to scared women to make them feel better. There is no basis for it in science.” It may not have a basis in science, but Jackie wondered the same thing about the woman’s alternative techniques. She was no scholar, but she felt certain the therapist’s science was a secretive, dark alley type of science. A kind of science was practiced by eager practitioners on patients too frightened or ignorant to object. “Babies of any species are born with certain defense mechanisms. They can’t walk, talk and feed themselves. What they can do is attract attention and have their needs provided for them. Babies and puppies both have large eyes. They’re cute. There is an evolutionary reason for it. It allows our species to continue.” Jackie’s head pounded as the new information tried to enter her brain. It always had when she spoke with the woman. Regardless, she believed the woman. After all, she was a doctor, and who was she, a pregnant teenager without a GED or even a part-time job, to challenge her? Still, something inside of her told her there was something wrong. Of course, she wasn’t about to say “no.” If she had that power, she wouldn’t be here in the first place. “The problem you’re experiencing, the way you’re feeling tells me you may be immune to these mechanisms. You never wanted to be a mother. At least, not now. Sure, some mothers are nervous, but not this far along. When is the baby due?” She was right, she wasn’t supposed to be a mother. How cruel was a god if he made barren so many women desperate for a child’s love, and curse her by making her tortured soul an incubator for new life, she thought. “October, I think,” Jackie responded. “Right.” “What?” Jackie was surprised by the force in her voice. “Is something wrong?” “It’s just that women who want to be mothers don’t say ‘I think.’ They know down to the weeks how much longer they have.” Jackie turned from the woman and looked out the window to her left. The older woman followed her gaze. “It’s okay. You shouldn’t feel guilty. Not everyone feels the same, and we shouldn’t force anything that we don’t feel. It leads to repression, to anger.” “Then what do I do? It’s too late for an abortion.” The older woman was silent for a moment. “You will have this baby. In the meantime, I will teach you some techniques. Controversial techniques in the field, I might add, but effective nonetheless.” For the next few months for one quick hour every Thursday morning, Jackie and the therapist would work on the techniques. The latter promised she would get her through her impending stint into motherhood. “Now, say it to me again,” the therapist insisted. “Say all those nasty thoughts to me. And don’t forget to smile.” Jackie repeated what the dark recesses of her mind told her at those times when she was at her weakest. “Don’t cry,” the older woman said once she was done. “Babies and puppies can’t talk or express their feelings like you and I, but they’re still very intuitive when it comes to how you feel.” “So, I should pretend?” “Yes, fake it.” The woman’s eyes were intense, her voice sympathetic, but stern. Even though they had been working for several weeks, Jackie was put aback. This woman was a licensed therapist. She was a smart, confident woman with power suits and a fancy diploma on her wall. Still, she wasn’t completely convinced by the woman’s teaching method. “You won’t need to do it forever. Just until those voices in your head become softer and softer and finally inaudible.” The session ended in tears. Not tears of failure. Not tears for her unborn daughter. No, they were tears of true fear. Fear that it was too late to change the inevitable. The baby attempted a feeble roll, and it snapped Jackie back to the present. “Come here” she said. She used the same tone of voice the therapist instructed her to use. Jackie cursed the therapist, yet was able to restrain herself until the anger that boiled inside her first fell to a simmer and then finally there was no movement in her blood. She considered calling the therapist. The state no longer was willing to pay the bill, and the money she received in aid wouldn’t even begin to cover the expenses. Still, wouldn’t the woman have wanted her to call? At the very least to let her know that the techniques appeared to be working. No, the therapist probably had other patients, patients just as screwed up as her. It was her and the fifteen pounds of flesh in front of her now. Jackie smiled and cleared her throat for the high, squeaky voice all adult voices turned into when face-to-face with an infant. “Crazy or not, we’re stuck with each other. Now open that fat little mouth of yours, so I cram this crap in you and shut your face.” |

| title | Fan Controlled Football League Review |
| body | Photo courtesy: Medium Fantasy football is a big business, even if it started out as a fun, vicarious exercise. It is this writer’s opinion that the Fan Controlled Football League is an extension of this phenomenon that brings together millions of sports fans and rakes in billions in annual revenue. To understand where we’re at today, it’s important to provide some context, especially in regards to the FCFL’s predecessor, fantasy sports leagues. In 2003, 15.2 million individuals across the US and Canada participated in fantasy sports leagues. By 2008, this number reached 29.9 million. Seven years later this total nearly doubled to 56.8 fantasy sports players. That is nearly 20 million more than the most populous American state, California, which had just over 37 million residents in 2015. Not only is fantasy football popular in the US, it is extremely lucrative. It is estimated that in 2015 revenues reached $18.6 billion, or six billion more than the National Football League itself! By 2017, the number of players reached 59.3 million, while revenues totaled approximately $7 billion. Fantasy football is big business in the US. Photo labeled for reuse. The potential of fantasy sports is massive given the large populations of other countries like Brazil and India with sports crazed fans in lucrative sports like soccer and cricket. It comes as no surprise then that FCFL would latch on to this industry and try to get a piece of the pie. However, the project’s developers went beyond dollar signs and really got to the core of why sports fans participate in activities like fantasy sports leagues. The first and most obvious appeal of fantasy sports leagues is the thrill of managing teams. Ever since sports games and matches have been televised, men have been abusing television sets with insults and curses aimed at managers who would have been better off listening to their advice. Managing a fantasy sports league team puts individuals in the driver’s seat. When one thinks about it, why does one follow a team? Why do they spend their time and hard earned money to support millionaire players, coaches and owners? Is it loyalty to their city? Tradition? Wives around the world have been asking this question for decades. Simply put, what do people get out of it? Regardless, what the answer is fantasy sports leagues provide much needed consumer interaction, a trend seen across industries. Consumers simply don’t want to be passive anymore, and that is also true when it comes to sports. Fantasy sports players interact with other players. They exchange suggestions. They trade players. They tease those with losing teams, and secretly despise those doing well. FCFL takes this concept of fan participation to a whole other level. Participants do some of the things fantasy sports players do, but with real life consequences. In fact, participants draft team players, hire and fire coaches and can even call plays in real time. Fan decisions resulted in the Salt Lake City Screaming Eagles having the league's third best offense. Photo courtesy: Slate. Currently, FCFL owns one team, the Salt Lake City Screaming Eagles, an indoor football team. FCFL began development of their platform in 2015. The Salt Lake City Screaming Eagles made their debut in February 2017. Despite playing in a ten-team indoor football league known by few, the team has been able to garner attention that would make teams in bigger leagues jealous. Views across Facebook, YouTube and Twitch exceeded 1 million. Media outlets like Wall Street Journal and the New York Times covered the team, while tens of thousands of fans from around the world tuned in. In addition to media attention, the FCFL was able to meet its goal of getting individuals to participate. In total, over 300 thousand plays were called by fans in real time! Furthermore, over $2 million was invested into the FAN platform and token, FCFL’s blockchain backed cryptocurrency. How does it work? Apparently, relatively easy. In order to participate in the team’s decision-making, individuals need to buy FAN tokens. The more FAN tokens one owns the greater weight their decision will have. Tokens can also be obtained by “watching games, calling plays, proving their knowledge, making team decisions and competing against rival fans.” Basically, the more invested the individual is the more they will get in return. The platform’s website claims “certain top fans of the team that wins the title get a cut of the $1,000,000 and growing championship prize pool and bragging rights over the rest of the league.” The FCFL makes the whole process a buy-in for fans. The FCFL also plans to test out new technologies, which may eventually find their way into traditional leagues. Technologies include live stream camera helmets, real time player biometrics, chips in the ball and overhead drones with cameras. On their website, the FCFL states “all of our games will be played in a cutting edge production facility where a truly interactive sports entertainment experience can be delivered in real-time in any connected device on the planet.” As interesting as the FCFL is, the concept is unlikely to catch traction in current leagues. These leagues already have buy-in based mostly on tradition. However, being relegated to small leagues and sports could be good for the FCFL and any future iterations. The concept is more complimentary to the NFL than a competitor, and can be a fun way to satisfy cravings for football in the winter, spring and summer when the NFL and college football are on hiatus. The same can be replicated across the world and sports, which is a stated goal of the developers behind FCFL. There are several things going well for the FCFL. This includes partnerships with industry relevant and respected players like Sports Illustrated and Amazon’s Twitch. Another fact that protects the platform from being attacked as a gimmick is the fact that it uses the well-respected Ethereum blockchain. Another advantage is that like fantasy sports leagues, the FCFL’s business model allows fans to financially participate and potentially profit from sport outcomes without running the risk of being classified as gambling. Finally, any concerns regarding play calling chaos of thousands of opinions were eased when the Screaming Eagles finished the season with the third ranked offense. Other factors that are in FCFL’s favor is that its association with blockchain and cryptocurrency appeals to a demographic also more likely to participate in fantasy sports league. The Fantasy Sports Trade Association found that the average age of fantasy sports players is 32. 71% are also male, another demographic more likely to be invested in cryptocurrencies as well as 50% having a college degree or more. Finally, the average fantasy sports player spends $653 a year on their activities meaning that having disposable income to take part in the experiment is not a major concern. Despite all the factors in its favor, there are some obstacles for the FCFL to overcome. The first is the fact that FAN tokens are just one of over a thousand cryptocurrencies currently on the market. Without easy liquidity on exchanges, FAN tokens have limited value and appeal. In fact, the platform may be better off using a more tried and true cryptocurrency or an up-and-coming cryptocurrency with a lot of upside like Cardano, created by Ethereum co-founder, Charles Hoskinson. Knowing that one can purchase products or services or easily exchange their tokens to fiat currencies would ease concerns and add value to participants. Another potential problem for FCFL is a dominance by super fans to the detriment of other interested parties. If it comes to a point in which super fans hold too much share of a team and decisions shift heavily in their favor, others may view investing in teams whether through their time, effort or money in the same way as looking through albums of someone else’s children. One of the FCFL’s biggest strengths is interaction and buy-in from participants and an oligarchy of any type may diminish interest. Regardless of whether or not the platform is able to garner sustained interest in the idea as well as expand into other sports, the concept is sure to be a fun ride, if not a guilty pleasure, for thousands around the world. |

"body": "\n\nPhoto courtesy: Medium\n\nFantasy football is a big business, even if it started out as a fun, vicarious exercise. It is this writer’s opinion that the Fan Controlled Football League is an extension of this phenomenon that brings together millions of sports fans and rakes in billions in annual revenue.\n\n\nTo understand where we’re at today, it’s important to provide some context, especially in regards to the FCFL’s predecessor, fantasy sports leagues. In 2003, 15.2 million individuals across the US and Canada participated in fantasy sports leagues. By 2008, this number reached 29.9 million. Seven years later this total nearly doubled to 56.8 fantasy sports players. That is nearly 20 million more than the most populous American state, California, which had just over 37 million residents in 2015.\n\nNot only is fantasy football popular in the US, it is extremely lucrative. It is estimated that in 2015 revenues reached $18.6 billion, or six billion more than the National Football League itself! By 2017, the number of players reached 59.3 million, while revenues totaled approximately $7 billion.\n\n\nFantasy football is big business in the US. Photo labeled for reuse.\n\nThe potential of fantasy sports is massive given the large populations of other countries like Brazil and India with sports crazed fans in lucrative sports like soccer and cricket. \n\nIt comes as no surprise then that FCFL would latch on to this industry and try to get a piece of the pie. However, the project’s developers went beyond dollar signs and really got to the core of why sports fans participate in activities like fantasy sports leagues.\n\nThe first and most obvious appeal of fantasy sports leagues is the thrill of managing teams. Ever since sports games and matches have been televised, men have been abusing television sets with insults and curses aimed at managers who would have been better off listening to their advice. Managing a fantasy sports league team puts individuals in the driver’s seat.\n\nWhen one thinks about it, why does one follow a team? Why do they spend their time and hard earned money to support millionaire players, coaches and owners? Is it loyalty to their city? Tradition? Wives around the world have been asking this question for decades. Simply put, what do people get out of it?\n\nRegardless, what the answer is fantasy sports leagues provide much needed consumer interaction, a trend seen across industries. Consumers simply don’t want to be passive anymore, and that is also true when it comes to sports. Fantasy sports players interact with other players. They exchange suggestions. They trade players. They tease those with losing teams, and secretly despise those doing well.\n\nFCFL takes this concept of fan participation to a whole other level. Participants do some of the things fantasy sports players do, but with real life consequences. In fact, participants draft team players, hire and fire coaches and can even call plays in real time.\n\n\nFan decisions resulted in the Salt Lake City Screaming Eagles having the league's third best offense. Photo courtesy: Slate.\n\nCurrently, FCFL owns one team, the Salt Lake City Screaming Eagles, an indoor football team. Media outlets like Wall Street Journal and the New York Times covered the team, while tens of thousands of fans from around the world tuned in.\n\nIn addition to media attention, the FCFL was able to meet its goal of getting individuals to participate. In total, over 300 thousand plays were called by fans in real time! Furthermore, over $2 million was invested into the FAN platform and token, FCFL’s blockchain backed cryptocurrency.\n\nHow does it work? Apparently, relatively easy.\n\nIn order to participate in the team’s decision-making, individuals need to buy FAN tokens. The more FAN tokens one owns the greater weight their decision will have. Tokens can also be obtained by “watching games, calling plays, proving their knowledge, making team decisions and competing against rival fans.” Basically, the more invested the individual is the more they will get in return. The platform’s website claims “certain top fans of the team that wins the title get a cut of the $1,000,000 and growing championship prize pool and bragging rights over the rest of the league.” The FCFL makes the whole process a buy-in for fans.\n\nThe FCFL also plans to test out new technologies, which may eventually find their way into traditional leagues. Technologies include live stream camera helmets, real time player biometrics, chips in the ball and overhead drones with cameras. On their website, the FCFL states “all of our games will be played in a cutting edge production facility where a truly interactive sports entertainment experience can be delivered in real-time in any connected device on the planet.”\n\nAs interesting as the FCFL is, the concept is unlikely to catch traction in current leagues. The same can be replicated across the world and sports, which is a stated goal of the developers behind FCFL.\n\nThere are several things going well for the FCFL. Finally, any concerns regarding play calling chaos of thousands of opinions were eased when the Screaming Eagles finished the season with the third ranked offense.\n\nOther factors that are in FCFL’s favor is that its association with blockchain and cryptocurrency appeals to a demographic also more likely to participate in fantasy sports league. The Fantasy Sports Trade Association found that the average age of fantasy sports players is 32. 71% are also male, another demographic more likely to be invested in cryptocurrencies as well as 50% having a college degree or more. Finally, the average fantasy sports player spends $653 a year on their activities meaning that having disposable income to take part in the experiment is not a major concern.\n\nDespite all the factors in its favor, there are some obstacles for the FCFL to overcome. The first is the fact that FAN tokens are just one of over a thousand cryptocurrencies currently on the market. Without easy liquidity on exchanges, FAN tokens have limited value and appeal. In fact, the platform may be better off using a more tried and true cryptocurrency or an up-and-coming cryptocurrency with a lot of upside like Cardano, created by Ethereum co-founder, Charles Hoskinson. | body | L16 by Light. Photo source: The Verge Smartphones are ubiquitous in the United States and around the world. And as everyone knows, smartphones do much more than make phone calls. Today, smartphones have become a necessity in which consumers are willing to spend hundreds of dollars on. They capture memories, browse the internet, send e-mails and texts and so much more. Given the influence of smartphones on the everyday lives of consumers, it makes sense that people are constantly looking for ways to upgrade their devices. Check out these two add-ons that improve picture quality and allow users to convert their smartphones into gaming devices. Photo taken with L16 by Light. Photo from company website. As strange as it may look, the L16 uses advanced algorithm technology to provide users with high, studio quality photos. Using the shutter button, users take 10 photos at the same time capturing all the details of a scene at multiple focal lengths. After the picture is taken, the devices algorithms “combine multiple exposures into a single high-resolution photo.” The L16 has 5X optical zoom, android capabilities and a slim frame. Gamers are a different type of people. Obsessed with otherworldly scenarios, gamers will spend thousands to satisfy the urge. It must have been with this in mind that Wanle Game Consoles developed cases that turn iPhones into classic gaming consoles. Wanle Game Consoles act as cases, but turn iPhones into nostalgic devices for those who grew up playing the original handheld device, Nintendo Gameboy. In fact, the consoles come preinstalled with classic games like Tetris, Tank, One Racing and Snake. In addition to turning an iPhone into a gaming console, the gadgets function as a durable case for one’s phone. Currently, Wanle Game Consoles retail for $33.99. Another aspect longtime gamers will appreciate about these consoles is that they are true to the classic feel of Gameboy controllers, and not simply a watered down version with cheap imitations. However, the device is an improvement in that users can easily maneuver between games without having to change cartridges. Furthermore, unlike having a Nintendo Switch or other handheld console users have both the capabilities of a smartphone and game console in one device. The company claims that despite the buttons and other features that replicate the original console, the case is slim and practical for everyday use. They also add that smartphone functions and components, such as the microphone, speaker, headphone jack and main dock will be accessible while playing. Wanle Game Consoles website. |

| title | Natural Alternative To Coffee |
| body | Product to Avoid Side Effects of an American Favorite A guarana plant Coffee is beloved by many for its soothing aromas, distinct taste and caffeine potency. Unfortunately, the popular hot drink has downsides, most notably, bad breath, teeth staining, and jitters. Drinking coffee on an empty stomach has been proven to damage the stomach lining. Guarana is used to flavor popular soft drinks of same name in Brazil A natural alternative to coffee for those who want the caffeine, but not the side effects is guarana. Guarana is a tropical plant native to South America. In Brazil, the plant, which resembles an eyeball in its natural form is used in flavorings and as a natural stimulant. More specifically, guarana is used to flavor popular soft drinks by the same name. Coca-Cola owns a guarana soft drink brand in Brazil called Kuat. Powdered guarana is used for its power as a stimulant and other reported benefits While more commonly used for soft drink flavoring, guarana in these drinks have minimal benefits as a stimulant. Instead, the powder form or po de guarana is the purest form with the highest caffeine content. In certain places in Brazil, such as the Midwest state of Mato Grosso guarana in this form is the traditional drink, instead of coffee. Traditionally, powdered guarana is mixed with water. Some add a touch of sugar given the gritty consistency and earthy taste of the product. Today, in the US guarana can be found in small doses in energy drinks like Monster or in capsule form at popular pharmacy chains like CVS and Walgreens. In addition to being a stimulant, guarana does not cause bad breath or stain teeth. In this writer’s experience, guarana also does not create highs and crashes like coffee. Some drink guarana only in the morning, while others take a second dose after lunch. It is not recommended, as with any caffeine product, that one drinks guarana close to bedtime as it can cause insomnia. Other reported benefits of guarana include stimulating new cell growth and giving skin a youthful appearance, acting as an antioxidant, improving concentration, reducing excess glucose and cholesterol, regulating the digestive system, helping weight loss, thinning of blood, reducing anxiety, and more. Some of these benefits have not been proven by research. The Federal Drug Administration in the United States has not approved guarana as a medicinal product. The product is considered a herbal supplement in the US. Headaches are one of the most common side effects of guarana use as is the case with other caffeine related products that can cause dependency. Other considerations should be discussed with a medical professional. Given that guarana is a stimulant it is particularly important for those with heart issues to discuss consumption with their doctor. Currently, the most common places to find powdered guarana is in capsule form at pharmacies or in loose form on online stores like Amazon. Warnings: I am not a medical professional and the above is not medical advice. I am also not a producer, seller or ambassador of a brand of this product. | body | Advocates Must Act Quickly If They Hope to Have A Voice in Policy Making All photos labeled for reuse. Only once solar panels were adopted by a larger portion of Americans did the industry find its voice Years ago pundits and politicians in the US would make the bogus claim that alternative energy sources like wind and solar shouldn’t be pursued given their high costs. Of course, their lie of omission was the fact that these sources cost more, because they were at their early stages of development and if they were to receive government support it would likely increase demand, which economics prove would drive prices down. In fact, nuclear energy prices were only ever competitive due to decades of government subsidies. A 2009 Taxpayers for Common Sense study found that since 1948 more than $85 billion was spent on the nuclear industry. Unlike solar and wind energy, nuclear never really captured private investment and still remains reliant on the federal and state governments. Why do industries like nuclear and coal still exist? Simple: They have thousands, if not millions, who currently or at one point relied on these energy sources. For many this meant jobs that their parents or relatives held or jobs they may have held themselves. Communities that relied on nuclear or coal plants for jobs supported peripheral economic activity meaning that everyone from the local barber to the school principal provided products and services to people from the largest local employer. It is this infrastructure and tradition that must be fostered and expanded to provide cryptocurrency supporters leverage against attacks from traditional banks and financial systems as well as others, like politicians, who stand to profit. And it needs to be done quickly! Banks like Bank of America have been vocal about their concerns over cryptocurrencies Over the last few months leaders of major banks in the US, such as Bank of America and J.P. Morgan Chase, have publically announced or stated in their investor presentations warnings of cryptocurrencies being a major threat to them. They have also taken action by banning cryptocurrency purchases using their credit cards. Moreover, just a few weeks later the Securities Exchange Commission – perhaps at behest or at least encouraged by pressure from these banks – stepped up its pressure on the industry. By March, the SEC issued dozens of subpoenas of individuals and companies in cryptocurrency. Now, to be fair, the cryptocurrency could use some regulation given the scams, hacks and unethical and illegal behavior of certain actors. Still, given the timing of the warnings from banks as well as criticisms from several of the wealthy and powerful from Warren Buffet to the Bank of England’s, Mark Carney, and Davos coupled with the clampdown just months later demonstrates the heavy influence of these institutions and individuals and the lack of an influence from the crypto world. So, how does the crypto world fight back? It must become adopted by enough people in which politicians risk alienating a significant portion of the population, businesses or campaign money in favor of the other. Simply put, if enough of the population supports and uses cryptocurrency a politician must have full confidence the other portion of the population is larger and more likely to vote or else risk losing support and elections. To use another example, Americans were quite divided when in 2009 congress passed the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare. Politicians, especially Republicans, could rail against the policy knowing very well that enough donors, lobbyists and voters support that stance. Today, it’s a bit trickier. Just last year a “Health Tracking Poll from the Kaiser Family Foundation found that 48% of Americans view the law favorably…the highest level of favorability measured in more than 60 Kaiser Health Tracking Polls conducted since 2010.” Similar results were found in a Pew Research Center poll that also saw the ACA have its highest level of favorability at 54%. Once people realized they liked Obamacare politicians have had to form less firm stances, even conceding support for portions of the bill like covering pre-existing conditions. Unfortunately, for cryptocurrency supporters the country is nowhere close to reaching similar adoption rates. In fact, a survey from Global Blockchain Business Council concluded that while 60% of Americans had heard of Bitcoin only 5% own the digital asset. The survey goes on to state that 21% of that number claim to be considering adding it to their portfolios, while 58% of holders are male and under 34 years of age. Furthermore, the country faces a potential educational and technological ceiling when it comes to adoption of cryptocurrencies. Computer manufacturers like Samsung are trying to keep up with crypto related demand Still, there appears to be hope in the demand not only for cryptocurrency, but products and services associated with the industry. Bitcoin ATMS are popping up across the country providing retail establishments opportunities to monetize otherwise dead areas in their stores. Computer manufacturers, like Samsung, are increasing production of graphic cards to assist with mining. In late December 2017, Forbes reported that “Bitcoin- and blockchain-related jobs on LinkedIn have risen roughly 306% in the 12 months ending mid-November.” Still, the cryptocurrency community must increase its rate of expansion, especially in infrastructure, adoption rates and jobs – and not ridiculous ICOs endorsed by Steven Seagal - to protect itself against the institutions, especially in banking and government. It is only once the cryptocurrency world has been so ingrained into the American psyche and day-to-day life will cryptocurrency earn enough leverage to maintain its survival. |

| title | Could Altcoin Education Add More Value? |
| body | Many Can Benefit from More Crypto Educational Options All photos labeled for reuse. New crypto projects can find it hard to be heard in a noisy crowd Today, the cryptocurrency market is fast moving and ever-changing. With that said, smaller cryptocurrency endeavors trying to attract investors to their altcoins are finding it hard to garner attention and interest in a noisy field. Some projects offer incentives, most notably, Initial Coin Offerings, or ICOs, for simply holding the coins in hopes of being added to an exchange or for taking some action, such as following or tweeting about the project. At the same time that projects are trying to get attention and users, demand is growing elsewhere in the industry. In late December 2017, Forbes reported that “Bitcoin- and blockchain-related jobs on LinkedIn have risen roughly 306% in the 12 months ending mid-November.” This demand in cryptocurrency and blockchain jobs should come as no surprise as people see opportunity in the industry, while coming to appreciate the blockchain technology as they learn more about it. Andreas Antonopoulous is a pioneer in cryto education As with any other industry in which there is demand for employment, there is also demand for education rin the field. Currently, the offerings are slim and mostly consisting of videos on educational platforms like Coursera and Udemy. Given the industry is in its infancy, many of the “experts” giving these classes are simply trying to make a buck, while promoting particular products or giving superficial explanations of blockchain and cryptocurrencies. However, a few legitimate educators like Andreas Antonopoulous, who runs a Digital Currency program at the University of Nicosia in Cyprus, have become important voices. Furthermore, IBM offers some courses on blockchain, including free courses that provide certificates upon completion and passing of a final exam. According to Bitcoin.com, three services have the goal of creating Bitcoin professional and experts. These include CryptoCurrency Certification Consortium (C4), Digital Currency Council, and Princeton via the aforementioned Coursera. Nearly all courses, classes and certificates focus on blockchain and Bitcoin or a handful of other major cryptocurrencies and not on the plethora of other projects and coins. The lack of mentions in cryptocurrency courses can make it hard for smaller projects trying to get the word out. It can also be a great opportunity. As mentioned above, most new projects offer something to early users in exchange for their support. New projects need users to create demand, get listed on exchanges and increase the appreciation of their coins. Where do the courses and certificates come in? I thought you’d never ask. By offering short, free courses with certificates – which can be verified via blockchain – new projects can offer those with interest in being employed in the crypto field. The new projects will educate users on their project as opposed to having to rely on individuals visiting their websites, downloading their white paper and reading through it. Those who take the course and earn the certificate will also be more invested in the project and more likely to take advantage of the other early stage activities (e.g. ICOs) as well as invest in the cryptocurrency at a later stage. Those taking the course and earning the certificate, on the other hand, will be compensated for their time with certificates, possibly verified, which will help them build stronger resumes for potential cryptocurrency positions. This is particularly important for those looking to work in the industry, but without the technical skills, such as crypocurrency traders, analysts, marketing managers, etc. In summary, the demand for cryptocurrency education will increase alongside with the demand for jobs in the cryptocurrency space. By offering courses and certificates, both new project developers and teams as well as potential job seekers will benefit with fewer risks in a marketplace that be hard to get one’s voice heard. |
