Whereas, I’m the immovable object in the room. \nThe bone snaps. \nI’m left holding a shard, she’s got a shard and the bit in the middle – the deciding bit for who gets the frigging wish – flies into the air.\nWe both track the important bit as it sails through the air and hits the ground at our feet.\nJuno doesn’t even stand up, it’s in her mouth and down her throat before we can shout, “Don’t eat that!” Which we do anyway.\nThe dog chokes briefly and then smacks her lips and looks up at us, tongue hanging out.\nWe crack up. Best laugh we’ve had for ages. Susy was in tears.\nMaybe that was Juno’s wish.\n\nAs a metaphor for life at the moment, that played out with uncanny accuracy.",

I phoned the Mercedes garage. The conversation went thus:\n\nMe: “Hi, my car is insisting it needs AdBlue or it’s going on strike.”\n\nMercedes: “Ah. Yes. OK. Well, from your reg number, that’s an E Class and the reservoir takes 20 litres.”\n\nMe: “OK. How much?”\n\nMercedes: “It’s not bad. £11 for 10 litres plus VAT, so…”\n\nMe: “Great! Where do I put it?”\n\nMercedes: “No idea. Don’t you have a hole next to your diesel tank for it?”\n\nMe: “Um, no.”\n\nMercedes: “Well, we can fit it for you.”\n\nNow, I’m thinking, FIT it for me? It’s not a frigging air-horn. It’s a fluid. But I don’t know where it goes and pouring it into the wrong place is probably going to cost me a LOT more than having someone knowledgeable just deal with it. How much can it cost, after all, to get someone to pour some liquid into the right reservoir in my car?\n\nNow, anyone that has ever had to put their car into a Mercedes garage for ANY fucking reason at ALL, no matter how inconsequential, is probably pissing themselves laughing right now.\n\nAs the sound of a calculator getting abused by greedy little fingers drifted into my car (I was on hands free), my mind screamed at me, ‘Do you remember the coolant leak six months ago? £38 in parts and £380 to refill the system plus diagnosis? WELL, do you?!? That cost you £860 fucking quid for a washer and a hose!’\n\nI’ll admit I was quivering in expectation.\n\nMercedes: “That’ll be £99 and change. When would you like me to book you in?”\n\nIt’s difficult to fall off your seat in a car. There are doors and a steering wheel and a drive tunnel cum arm rest to contend with but I almost managed it.\n\nMe: “You want £75 to pour some fluid into my car? Are you kidding me?”\n\nMercedes: Silence.\n\nI stabbed the terminate call button on the steering wheel and took the next off-ramp.\n\nTwenty minutes later, I pulled up outside Halfords. Locking the car, I strode in, still seething.\n\nThe guy at the till took my raging demeanour in his stride, clearly an everyday occurence.\n\n“AdBlue,” I hissed. “Could you point it out?”\n\n“Ah – over there. We’ve got a top-up deal on it too.”\n\n£11.50 per 10 litres and they’ll put it in the right receptacle for you.\n\nI had to wait 15 minutes until the technician had sorted someone’s wing mirror and topped up another person’s oil but he was pleasant, competent and efficient. He showed me where the reservoir was located (it’s where you would normally find the spare wheel that no longer exists – don’t get me started on that) and emptied the 10 litres into it, then cleaned up after himself.\n\nIt took him 5 minutes, tops.\n\nI related the conversation I had with Mercedes to him and he was shocked. “It’s free this week. We normally charge £5. \nHow much more could you ask for without taking the utter rip?”\n\nThat’s a FUCKING GOOD QUESTION Mercedes-Benz!\n\nThey must think we’re all congenital idiots with massive trust funds to drain.\n\nThank you Halfords, I would recommend your services to anyone now. And your tech guy was brand new, an absolute credit to your company.\n\n£11.50 FITTED (sic) vs £99 and change.\n\nYou do the math.",

      "body": "There comes a time in any techie’s life when they are called out to deal with a problem so catastrophic that it will change the lives of the people impacted by it.\n\nI attended one yesterday.\n\nOne of my clients received a phone call the day before, purportedly from BT internet. The company secretary took the call and was horrified to hear that her computer was infected with malware that was choking BT’s network. The only way to get rid of this, according to the person on the other end of the phone, called David (with a distinctly foreign accent), was to install one of their programs which would allow them to eliminate the threat.\n\nAnd so she did.\n\n![](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdpZqzQRrD6GH2HPqYnSA6f6JVhKpKnVekycmrEy4FpaL/image.png)\nImage courtesy of Pixabay.com\n\nWithin half an hour, they had taken £7,000 from the business account. Fifteen minutes later, they went back for another £10,000, emptying even the overdraft. The secretary was in bits, she thought she'd just helped them put the company out of business. Were it not for the deep pockets of the owner, she would have been right.\n\nWhy am I telling you this?\n\nThese fraudsters are plausible, articulate and determined. They have an answer to every question, a website for verification of every query and a spoof email supposedly from them at BT itself to prove who they are. They are VERY good at what they do. I had one on the phone last year and even though I knew it was a scam from the start, it took me thirty minutes to get him to admit it. And even then he kept phoning me back and calling me a c**t.\n\nNeither BT or Talk Talk or Microsoft are ever going to phone you and ask you to install software. If they have a network problem, you can be sure you are not the cause of it and even if you somehow managed to slow down their systems, they’d simply throttle your bandwidth until you squeaked.\n\nDon’t fall for it.\n\nI don’t want any of you to lose your life savings or your business or your pension.\n\nOh, just so you know – I cannot clean out a machine that is infected in this manner. The piece of software you install for them is a remote desktop, TeamViewer or AnyDesk or another one of dozens available out there. This gets them into your machine as if it was their own. From there, they can install whatever they like.\n\nI cleaned the remote desktop software off the infected machine and discovered another three back doors and a shiny new install of Candy Crush Soda Saga before I held my hands up and told the client that there was no way I could guarantee I’d got them all. There could still be a keystroke logger or any number of nasties hiding in there.\n\nI explained I would have to wipe his PC before I would allow it back on the network.\n\nSo, don’t fall for it.\n\nYou’ve been warned.\n\nPass it on.",
