Susan Collins in 2020 was inundated with pledges Friday afternoon, after the Maine Republican announced she would support Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court.\n\nBy 3:55 p.m., the site had crashed, apparently overwhelmed.\n\n“Senator Susan Collins has people more motivated than we’ve ever seen before,” Crowdpac tweeted. “Hold tight, we’ll be back shortly.”\n\nThe site was back online a little less than two hours later. By Saturday afternoon, the campaign that vows to support Collins’s future opponent had surpassed $3.2 million — not an insignificant amount for a political race in a state with among the smallest populations in the country (1.3 million).\n\nA group of liberal activists began the campaign last month to pressure Collins, a key swing vote in Kavanaugh’s nomination, to vote against President Trump’s nominee. If Collins voted no, donations would not be withdrawn from donors. If she voted yes, the pledges would fund the campaign of the Maine Democrat who wins the nomination for the Senate seat in two years.\n\n\n[Activists raised $1 million to defeat Susan Collins if she votes for Kavanaugh. She says it’s bribery.]\n\nMaine People’s Alliance, Mainers for Accountable Leadership and activist Ady Barkan have doubled their original goal to $4 million. The unusual fundraising effort is a sign of an energized Democratic electorate and could set the stage for Collins’s reelection effort.\n\nAs the pledges poured in Friday, yet another unusual series of events in these hyperpartisan times unfolded on social media: the online crowdsourcing for a nominee and that nominee’s future campaign staff.\n\n“Who wants to run for Senate in Maine? There will be an army of supporters with you,” tweeted Jen Psaki, White House communications director under President Barack Obama.\n\n“Me,” Susan E. In a Google docs sign-up sheet she created, Lowenstein promised to send volunteers to the campaign as soon as there is one.\n\n\n“Nothing like starting with binders full of women (and men) ready to take up the fight,” she wrote.\n\nKasey O’Brien of Crowdpac said the site had a 98 percent increase in traffic during Collins’s speech on the Senate floor Friday.\n\nA spokeswoman for Collins has sharply criticized the crowdfunding effort, calling it an attempt at extortion.\n\n“And anybody who thinks these tactics would work on Senator Collins obviously doesn’t know her. Senator Collins will make up her mind based on the merits of the nomination. Threats or other attempts to bully her will not play a factor in her decision making whatsoever,” Annie Clark said in a statement before the senator announced her support for Kavanaugh.\n\nOne ethics expert told The Washington Post that the crowdfunding campaign may very well violate federal bribery statutes, which prohibit giving or offering anything of value to government officials in exchange for any acts or votes.\n\n\nMarie Follayttar, co-director of Mainers for Accountable Leadership, denounced bribery accusations.\n\n[As the decision loomed, anti-Kavanaugh demonstrators weighed on a Maine senator’s tiny staff]\n\n“The idea of Susan Collins attacking an effort by 35,000 small dollar donors as bribery is politics at its worst. Unlike Supreme Court judges, Senators do not enjoy a lifetime guarantee of their seat; they are accountable to the people.”\n\n\nAfter a bitter and partisan battle, the Senate on Saturday confirmed Kavanaugh in a 50-to-48 vote, cementing a conservative majority on the nation’s highest court. Hundreds of protesters — many chanting, “We believe survivors!” “Vote them out!” and “Shame, shame, shame” — converged on the U.S. Capitol as the Senate prepared to vote.\n\nKavanaugh’s confirmation was all but certain on Friday after Collins, Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) and Joe Manchin III (D-W.Va.) said they would vote for the judge. Nurmagomedov (27-0) relied on his superior grappling skills to maul the former champion on the ground and defend his UFC lightweight title via fourth-round submission at T-Mobile Arena in the biggest fight in UFC history.\n\nThat's when all hell broke loose.\n\nChaos ensued inside the Octagon immediately after McGregor tapped out via rear-naked choke in Round 4 as members of both teams began to fight with Khabib's team appearing to start the insanity. The melee quickly spilled out into the ringside area as police restrained a number of fans who jumped the barricade. Nurmagomedov got into a shouting match with UFC president Dana White during the altercation inside the cage. After order was relatively restored and McGregor was escorted to the locker room, UFC chose to skip Nurmagomedov's traditional post-fight interview in order to play it safe.\n\n\"If I put this belt on you, everybody's going to start throwing shit into the Octagon,\" White told Nurmagomedov.\n\nThe post-fight scene was one of the ugliest in UFC's history and began when Nurmagomedov stood over and taunted a fallen McGregor after the fight was stopped. Once referee Herb Dean restrained him, Nurmagomedov ran over to McGregor's corner have words and eventually climbed over the cage wall to escalate the situation and seemingly attack a member of McGregor's team.\n\nAt the same time, McGregor was attacked by members of Nurmagomedov's team inside the cage, along with an unidentified person who leaped the Octagon wall to hit the Irish star with punches. Nurmagomedov, meanwhile, fought off punches outside the cage by McGregor teammate Dillon Danis, who recently made his pro debut with Bellator MMA.\n\nThe dislike between the two camps escalated on April 5, just two days after Nurmagomedov slapped McGregor teammate Artem Lobov for comments he made about the Russian fighter on social media. McGregor, who ended a nearly two-year layoff on Saturday, showed up unannounced at UFC 223 in Brooklyn, New York, and attacked a bus filled with UFC fighters including Nurmagomedov.\n\nMcGregor, who tossed a hand truck through the window and injured three people, avoided jail time by pleading guilty to felony assault charges and accepted a plea deal. The hostility between the fighter's camps and the respective fans of their home countries helped build their title bout into an event that White expects to possibly double UFC's pay-per-view record of 1.65 million buys from McGregor's rematch with Nate Diaz in 2016.\n\nIt remains unknown whether the post-fight attack on McGregor and his team was a calculated and direct response to the bus attack at the Barclays Center. Either way, it marred what had been an intense and dramatic title bout featuring current and former champions, and two fighters with contrasting styles.\n\nAfter McGregor (21-4) stuffed an early takedown attempt in Round 1, Nurmagomedov was successful on a follow-up attempt and spent the majority of the opening round grappling for position as McGregor was seated. Eventually, Nurmagomedov worked him to the ground and landed a huge right hand at the horn to end the round.\n\nThe second round was Nurmagomedov's most dominant. He dropped McGregor briefly with a violent counter right hand that turned his chin in the early going. McGregor rose to land a knee to the face, but shortly after, Nurmagomedov secured another takedown and mauled McGregor for the remainder of the round with elbows and punches.\n\nMcGregor, who was lucky to survive, worked to his feet to close the one-sided round and talked trash to Nurmagomedov, which forced Dean to restrain the Russian champion. The crowd roared in approval of McGregor's toughness and the momentum carried with him into Round 3 as he largely outboxed Nurmagomedov on his feet and stuffed two of three takedown attempts.\n\nBut with his gas tank depleted after spending the majority of the fight on his back, McGregor gave up an early takedown in Round 4 and eventually gave up his back to avoid dealing with Nurmagomedov in full mount. \"The Eagle\" quickly applied a rear-naked choke from behind and forced the tap at 3:03 of Round 4 to make the first defense of the vacant title he won by defeating late replacement Al Iaquinta in April.\n\nAll three judges had Nurmagomedov leading 29-27 at the time of the stoppage.\n\nThe loss was the first for McGregor since he faded against Nate Diaz at UFC 196 in their first meeting and tapped out via similar choke. During the two years since McGregor moved up in weight to capture the lightweight title from Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205, he also suffered a loss in his pro boxing debut against Floyd Mayweather in August 2017.\n\nNurmagomedov took home a disclosed purse of $2 million, according to the Nevada State Athletic Commission. On paper, the Russian's approach is the worst possible style for McGregor to handle. So why is he doing it? The answer is both belief and beef.\n\nMcGregor was born to fight. He started training in MMA long before the sport was receiving the kind of global coverage it is today.\n\nIn 2015, long before the million-dollar pay days, private jets and fleet of Rolls-Royces, McGregor told Esquire magazine: \"I didn't get into MMA to be somebody. So the case of two men escaping from a Liaoning prison has turned into a nationwide hunt.\n\nIn an unusual step, Chinese media are appealing for the public's help in tracking down the escapees and have even publicised a reward for information leading to their capture of 100,000 yuan (£11,185, $14,558).\n\nThe pair, who are still believed to be in the province, were serving life sentences in northeastern Liaoning province.\n\nIt is very unusual for an inmate to escape from detention in China, and just as unusual for media to report it. Chinese media usually refrain from publicising incidents that might cause public alarm and usually only carry reports once an incident has been resolved or brought under control. \n\nWho escaped?\nThe two prisoners are 33-year-old Wang Lei and 30-year-old Zhang Guilin. They were being held at the Lingyuan Third Prison in northeastern Liaoning province when they escaped.\n\nLittle has been reported about Wang Lei, who was sentenced to death for kidnapping in 2017. Reports say his execution was suspended for two years, and that at the end of 2017, it was commuted to a life sentence for good behaviour.\n\nMuch more is made of 39-year-old Zhang Guilin, who was serving a life sentence for robbery. He was initially sentenced to seven years imprisonment in 2001, but reoffended in 2008, a year after he was released from prison.\n\nReality Check: What's the problem with prisons?\nA history of dramatic prison escapes\nHe was sentenced to life in 2009, but The Paper says that he made escape attempts twice during his sentencing. He has been known to be violent, and had intentionally injured another inmate by causing minor facial injuries during a fracas in 2014, The Paper says.\n\nHow did they manage to escape?\nThere are conflicting reports of how exactly the men might have managed to escape.\n\nNews site the Beijing Youth Daily earlier reported that the prisoners escaped by wearing uniforms they stole from guards and using their access cards.\n\nHowever, state broadcaster China National Radio later clarified that the exact details of the men's escape has not yet been confirmed, adding that the men could have escaped through a window.\n\nGiven that both men were serving life sentences, the prison is assumed to be maximum-security. Publicly available information says that the institute specialises in rehabilitation and offers apprenticeships and opportunities for criminals to manufacture clothing.\n\nThe incident has stoked strong criticism of the prison authorities on Chinese social media. \n\nMany voice surprise that the suspects haven't been caught yet, given China's extensive surveillance and police presence. \n\nThis may be a consequence of it being Golden Week - a week-long national holiday in China. \n\nIt is common during this time for there to be high levels of movement across the country, and in the congestion it is very easy for people to fall under the radar. \n\nThousands of users are saying that prison staff are \"incompetent\" and accuse them of \"dereliction of duty\". Some users voice fears about their personal safety given the severity of the convicts' sentences. \n\nWhat are media saying?\nState media often only report on incidents after they have been brought under control. In cases of \"lone ranger attacks\", such as stabbings, the media will only publish a report only after someone has been arrested, or is no longer deemed a threat. \n\nChina National Radio stresses that they are not likely to have left the province. You may not be able to vote me out, but you can vote everyone else out.\n\n—\n\nHello again!\n\nIt’s been a minute since my last post here, so I wanted to take some time out from our usual product and policy updates, meme safety reports, and waiting for r/livecounting to reach 10,000,000 to share some highlights from the past few months and talk about our plans for the months ahead.\n\nWe started off the quarter with a win for net neutrality, but as always, the fight against the Dark Side continues, with Europe passing a new copyright directive that may strike a real blow to the open internet. Nevertheless, we will continue to fight for the open internet (and occasionally pester you with posts encouraging you to fight for it, too).\n\nWe also had a lot of fun fighting for the not-so-free but perfectly balanced world of r/thanosdidnothingwrong. I’m always amazed to see redditors so engaged with their communities that they get Snoo tattoos.\n\nSpeaking of bans, you’ve probably noticed that over the past few months we’ve banned a few subreddits and quarantined several more. We don't take the banning of subreddits lightly, but we will continue to enforce our policies (and be transparent with all of you when we make changes to them) and use other tools to encourage a healthy ecosystem for communities. We’ve been investing heavily in our Anti-Evil and Trust & Safety teams, as well as a new team devoted solely to investigating and preventing efforts to interfere with our site, state-sponsored and otherwise. We also recognize the ways that redditors themselves actively help flag potential suspicious actors, and we’re working on a system to allow you all to report directly to this team.\n\nOn the product side, our teams have been hard at work shipping countless updates to our iOS and Android apps, like universal search and News. We’ve also expanded Chat on mobile and desktop and launched an opt-in subreddit chat, which we’ve already seen communities using for game-day discussions and chats about TV shows. We started testing out a new hub for OC (Original Content) and a Save Drafts feature (with shared drafts as well) for text and link posts in the redesign.\n\nSpeaking of which, we’ve made a ton of improvements to the redesign since we last talked about it in April.\n\nIncluding but not limited to… night mode, user & post flair improvements, better traffic pages for\n\nmods, accessibility improvements, keyboard shortcuts, a bunch of new community widgets, fixing key AutoMod integrations, and the ability to have community styling show up on mobile as well, which was one of the main reasons why we took on the redesign in the first place. I know you all have had a lot of feedback since we first launched it (I have too). Our teams have poured a tremendous amount of work into shipping improvements, and their #1 focus now is on improving performance. If you haven’t checked it out in a while, I encourage you to give it a spin.\n\nLast but not least, on the community front, we just wrapped our second annual Moderator Thank You Roadshow, where the rest of the admins and I got the chance to meet mods in different cities, have a bit of fun, and chat about Reddit. We also launched a new Mod Help Center and new mod tools for Chat and the redesign, with more fun stuff (like Modmail Search) on the way.\n\nOther than that, I can’t imagine we have much to talk about, but I’ll hang to around some questions anyway.\n\n—spez",
