| body | I’ve been involved with sustainability for a long time now. I’ve worked at the biggest and most powerful organizations involved in the issues: WTO, top think tank, government ministry, oil major, private consulting. I’ve seen it from top to bottom and here’s the one thing I can tell you: Sustainability will never happen until we manage to attach it to positive monetary profitability. What do I mean by that? I mean that to become truly viable and actually change the world the way it needs to, sustainability requires fundamentally recreating the incentives for what constitutes value and creating a financial mechanism that generates currency based on that. Trying to make sustainability happen only through negative profitability such as efficiency will not work because we can’t build new sustainability value principles on top of an old system that runs directly counter to those principles. Nor can we just obsess about doing a bunch of cutting in our old ways of doing things because that still indirectly means accepting and pursuing legacy notions of value as our economic core. It’s a distraction, not even a bandaid. Putting sustainability as our new core for positive value generating is about how we link value with currency and the mechanisms with which we generate and transmit that currency for use elsewhere. It is about the very basis of how our economic transactioning activities occur and how we get paid for work. Until that basis becomes our focus we are, in the words of Jonathan Franzen, just pretending. To solve this problem, in short, we need to change how money is created and how it is acquired by individuals and groups through work. A big problem right now is that we are not looking in the right place. Rather than pursuing economic fundamentals everybody seems busy looking for something to blame. It’s government inaction’s fault. It’s fossil fuel producer’s fault. It’s investment bank’s fault. Or this or that international cabal, these particular industries or financiers etc etc. I was never quite so finger-pointy but I did use to think that pursuing behavior change of “key actors and organizations” of the legacy system kind could work. That with the right influence and willing leadership in place this sustainability thing could morph into place through harnessing the power of the structures and systems we already have. But that isn’t true. Why? Because the fundamental principles of the economic system we have owns these structures, not the other way around. These actors, key though they may be for the maintenance of the old system, are the worst possible agents for changing it. Changing the parameters of what money is and how it works to promote sustainability through positive profitability will never come through the legacy system. Nor is it necessary to “bring down” that system. In fact, that would make things a lot worse. What is needed is creating an alternative monetary basis that can grow and gain its own momentum on the side of the legacy system. One that makes possible positive profitable work that is monetarily compensated with a viable currency rooted in the principles of sustainability. The key is to take control of monetary compensation to fundamentally favor work that is naturally propelling of sustainability priorities. Again, trying to build new sustainability priorities on top of the old system while still accepting its fundamental parameters is pretty much guaranteed to make those new priorities fail. As a famous management writer said: Culture eats strategy for breakfast. Our system of money is no exception to this rule. This all boils down to two related things that are the keys to making sustainability work for real: 1. We need to create a new mechanism for generating and earning money that is fundamentally and directly based in the principles of sustainability. Allowing the core generative ability to remain in the legacy system while “funneling” a bit here and there to sustainability investments fundamentally keeps the legacy system in control. There needs to be a shift of sustainability principles occupying the core generative place for money rather than being dependent on charity from legacy generating methods; 2. Directly following from this we need to let work and jobs be generated from this basis and have positive profitability create its own momentum in a way that works with the grain of sustainability rather than against it. I wrote this manifesto because this is the approach with which I want to be involved in sustainability. But I don’t think I’m alone. If you are interested, have thoughts, or just want to talk more about it, reach out to me. The more people we get on board to think about this the more power we will have to put a new basis for making money into the real world. Johan Westberg |

| body | How do you go to the gym? Do you mosey over to a bare-walled local establishment that vaguely smells of old sweat and hasn't been renovated for 20 years? Or do you walk over to a gym/coworking space/cocktail lounge/fitness restaurant/art gallery/event space/high-end member's club? If you do the latter, you may be part of an emerging elite where it's obviously assumed *that* you're working out. What matters now is *how* and *where* you are working out. Think about it. In the old times, it used to be that the meatheads ruled the gyms. The more muscle you had packed on, the higher status you were. Think Gold's Gym in the 70's when Arnold and his protein posse would rule the roost. In the brave new world of lifestyle gyms, however, the heros are a bit more complicated. It's not enough that you look like a guy who may or may not have given serious thought to injecting protein intravenously while sleeping. But nor is it some new "geek" cult either. In fact, many people at luxury gyms are just as hardcore as their less trendy brethren consigned to the local basement establishment. Again, what matters now is not *if* you have muscle but *how* you have muscle. What does that look like? Well, in essence, the fashionable gym-goer of today want their experience to be something between a luxury boutique hotel and Ivan Drago's training montage in Rocky 4. These aesthetics are important, but they're not the main thing. The real key to be one of the people who "get it" at the new lifestyle gyms is to be tapped into *wellness*. Wellness is a very important and purposefully vague term that basically means it's about to get expensive. It's not that simple of course, but it does quickly start to overlap with wider luxury categories of consumption. It is really a mindset of consumption, a kind of meta-brand of affording self-care. Most importantly, at the luxury lifestyle gym it is the indispensable pathway to mastering the "how" part of your muscles. And this is really the argument here. Lifestyle gyms ultimately do not just offer multi-function spaces out of some simpleton idea of having a nice club-house for grownups. It's much more serious than that, or else people wouldn't pay as much as they do. The reality is that by providing markers of a well-rounded life centered on wellness the gym experience becomes lifestyle affirmation and social signal rolled into a single glorious package. That affirmation and signaling tells a simple story: By being well, I'm doing well. And that, ultimately, is where it becomes about social status on two levels. The crass membership cost part is easy enough to understand, but any old pleb can win the lottery any old day. Does simply paying the price of admission mean a full integration into the lifestyle heaven of the luxury gym? Heck no! Such hoi-polloi tactics won't get the mindset of *wellness* that must course through all exercise activities, lest you be no more than a sweaty animal trying to people walk in these places. So don't be fooled that all gyms are equal anymore. Luxury lifestyle gyms focused on wellness are fast becoming the new breed marker of a social status that both affords it and "gets it". |

johanwestbergpublished a new post: the-second-bull-run-in-crypto

| author | johanwestberg |
| body | With the initial crypto hype phase firmly over, there is a lot of buzz right now about an incoming second bull run in crypto, with [predictions like 25 000 by year end](https://www.investopedia.com/news/hodl-bitcoin-its-going-be-25000-end-year-analyst/) a not too uncommon occurrence. Question is: How much of this is wishful thinking? I'm actually asking. How much do you think this is just wishful thinking? Me personally, I still haven't changed my fundamental position that bitcoin will be a very important store of value because it cannot be shut down nor is it really dependent on the vision of particular developers or developer teams. This is in line with what was [recently expressed](https://themerkle.com/paypals-peter-thiel-calls-bitcoin-digital-gold/) by Peter Thiel to be long bitcoin and skeptical of pretty much everything else. The only other project I am building exposure to right now, mainly because I can see the business idea from A to Z, is Ripple. Though much maligned in the crypto community for a lot of founder hoarding of XRP and for generally being quite "old stream", the fact is it's a plainly good business idea that if I were a VC I would absolutely back. If you take the crypto hat off for a second and see it as basically a startup going up against the universally unpopular SWIFT, it's a bet that just makes sense. Perhaps more than anything, I like that the business approach is simply better and cheaper than the incumbent. No need for starry-eyed vague words about something revolutionizing this or that without further specification. As for the rest, and ironically, I see blockchain as a registry technology at core and thus of huge practical usage to public information storage. In other words, things that will streamline governments and make them efficient, but a lot of times won't necessarily produce much in the way of monetary returns for investors. So those are my bets right now. Of course, if an actual bull market hits, everything is likely to go up. And as Buffett pointed out in his [latest newsletter](http://www.berkshirehathaway.com/letters/letters.html), investing cycles are actually surprisingly simple at core. Have exposure during general periods of upswing. Avoid investing when there is general downswing, and don't try to catch the exact moment when one turns into the other. This sounds damn near idiotic, but I highly recommend you go read and look at his experiment on active investing to see how it plays out when very smart people in very fancy buildings ignore this. Having said that though, it still mattered during the dotcom boom whether you just threw money at any dotcom company or if you put your money in amazon and google, which is why I still bother to look at individual projects and coins as opposed to just ignoring and seeking general exposure during upswings. So what do you guys think? Is there an incoming second crypto bull run in 2018? And if so which investments do you plan to use to seek exposure toward it? Cheers |

| body | Thanks, yeah I find it harder than I'd like it to be to start real conversations on here. A lot of people seem to be in business for themselves along the old models and so engage in a lot of 'robotic' behavior to work the stats. Couldn't agree more on not being able to wait for the decentralised future to come fast enough! By the way I see you're located in Amsterdam. Would you happen to know anything about the tech ecosystem there? Especially relating to blockchain work. Me and the missus are seriously considering making a move there so would be interesting to hear some views from someone with experience. |

| body | I like your point of view and agree @johanwestberg. When steemit is only used for blindly making money, upvoting without reading, and quantity over quality, it will end up like all those unsollicited advertising brochures on your doormat: in the bin. But I believe it is a matter of time. We're at the very beginning of this whole new shift in cyberspace. In the end people don't want a monetised version of the current internet. They want decentralisation and freedom ;-) |

| body | With many blockchain services such as Etherdelta being popular due to offering P2P without transaction costs, what do you think are the best monetization strategies for these types of dapps in general? [This](https://www.coindesk.com/ethereum-icos-youre-wrong) article on coinbase shows ethereum developers being exasperated at how many services offered through ICOs are really just centralized services in disguise and they call for more 'true' decentralized services. So what's the best way of monetizing true decentralized services? The way I see it right now a main way of monetizing dapps on the ethereum bc is to simply get good stake through the tokens being issued for its ICO, effectively shareholding and waiting for scale and the price to go up. The second one is to monetize transactions indirectly by issuing something on the service that one has to buy in order to pay for transactions. What are your thoughts on DApp monetization? What do you think some effective strategies are or might be? (Photo Credit: wikimedia.org) |

| body | The best way to use Steemit is not as a tactical tool for profit, but for finding your 'magic circle' and co-constructing with it. In the deluge of posts that come out on this site every minute, quality content gets drowned out with the rest for the simple reason that there is very little way of knowing what is quality content. I know because I am currently one of those people not actually clicking through very much in the feeds. Why? Because most of the content is low quality and the chance that even a good headline will actually contain a post worth my time is very low. If this was all there was to it I would worry a bit that the so called community aspect of Steemit would ultimately be at risk of the 'conversation with oneself in a public place' phenomenon that is indicative of a lot of blogging sites, where people are ultimately individually oriented and the real game is to get everyone else to pay attention to you so that you can grow bigger and more influential than others. This is the 'celebrity' model that is One-talks-to-many. Journalism, most authorship, Instagram, and most blogs follow this model. If you wish to follow this model on Steemit without having a pre-existing following then I say good luck to you, I hope you're a strong swimmer. I think a better way to do Steemit and the antidote to this celebrity model is to instead try and cultivate a 'magic circle'. A magic circle is not a following or being a follower although it involves both, but is simply a focused group of peers that you form by having similar interests and interact with continously for the purposes of co-creation towards a shared conviction or interest of some kind. The key question of course becomes: How do I find these people with similar interests, whose output I can't wait to engage with? Unfortunately I don't think there's any easy answer to that. I think first of all you need to know yourself and your interests or else you'll slosh around aimlessly on the sea of crap posts without focus. And ultimately, I think I and my fellow new Steemers will simply have to go through the slog of wading through bad content in the feeds until those few good people with interesting perspectives show up. Unfortunately, most Steeming right now seem to be more focused on 'winning' the attention economy zero-sum game of getting eyeballs and upvotes to ones individual posts. I think, and hope, that this is very old-hat and kind of goes against the Steemit ethos, which I think is more toward the forming of these personal magic circles first, and the monetization and attention from passive followers a distant second. Until I find such a group for myself, and there are no guarantees I will, posting on this site will keep having that stale and unsocial feeling of a conversation in my own head. _photo credit: India.com_ |
