Han sido históricamente utilizadas como símbolo de paz, pureza e inocencia, y aún hoy en día suele observarse en las iglesias la liberación de palomas en eventos religiosos. Entonces, ¿qué ha provocado que éstas aves sean a la vez tan queridas como odiadas?\nhttps://relatosdelanaturaleza.files.wordpress.com/2018/03/img_9749b-copyright.jpg?w=760\nEn el mundo existen más de 300 especies de palomas, de las cuales solamente unas 22 habitan el territorio mexicano. La especie más popular y común es la paloma doméstica (Columba livia domestica), descendiente de la paloma bravía, especie exótica originaria de Eurasia y que ahora se distribuye por prácticamente todo el planeta, exceptuando los polos y desiertos.\nhttps://relatosdelanaturaleza.files.wordpress.com/2018/03/img_8054b-copyright.jpg?w=760\nMe atrevería a decir que todo el mundo adora a las palomas silvestres, sobre todo cuando se posan en algún árbol y se acurrucan cariñosamente en pareja, mismas que por cierto son monógamas. Desafortunadamente, esa simpatía no es tan común con las palomas de la ciudad, pues mientras a algunos nos encanta verlas caminando por las plazas, alimentarlas y verlas volar en grandes bandadas, a otros no les gusta que se posen en nuestras estatuas y fachadas, catalogándolas como una plaga de sucias ratas con alas.\nhttps://relatosdelanaturaleza.files.wordpress.com/2018/03/img_6780b-copyright.jpg?w=760\nNo puedo estar en mayor desacuerdo con la satanización a la que han sido objeto desde la década de 1970 en todo el mundo y que ha dado lugar a verdaderas masacres y leyes que prohíben y castigan a quienes las alimentan, haciendo cada vez más raras esas escenas otrora clásicas donde se observaba a los abuelos sentados plácidamente en la plaza, alimentándolas mientras sus pequeños nietos correteaban felices detrás de ellas.\nhttps://relatosdelanaturaleza.files.wordpress.com/2018/03/img_1272b-copyright.jpg?w=760\nSi usted se pone a investigar un poco, encontrará infinidad de páginas de internet con infinitos listados de las enfermedades que las palomas pueden transmitir, mismos que son generalmente utilizados por los gobiernos municipales para evitar que la gente que las quiere y protege proteste en contra de sus políticas intolerantes. Permítame contarle rápidamente la otra cara de la historia que nos intentan transmitir en contra de las palomas, y seré esa voz de muchos quienes estamos defendiéndolas:\n\nEs cierto que en algunos casos han llegado a convertirse en un problema para los vecinos, pero existen métodos no invasivos para controlarlas. Por otro lado las palomas, al igual que todos los demás animales (silvestres y domésticos) y al igual que nosotros, son potenciales portadoras y transmisoras de enfermedades, pero siempre se les señala como culpables a pesar de que no existen estadísticas de salud que las señalen como tal. En los últimos años, por todo el planeta se han levantado voces y creado campañas para “lavar” la falsa imagen que se les ha otorgado en todo el mundo, donde tanto científicos renombrados como algunos representantes de gobiernos locales y organismos internacionales tan importantes como la Organización Mundial de la Salud, han señalado que las palomas en las ciudades no representan una amenaza para la salud pública y la transmisión de enfermedades a los humanos es poco frecuente.\nhttps://relatosdelanaturaleza.files.wordpress.com/2018/03/img_6839a-copyright.jpg?w=760\nDicho esto, quiero resaltar algunas de sus características más asombrosas: En vida silvestre son muy importantes para la dispersión de semillas y en las áreas urbanas representan una importante fuente de alimento para aves rapaces residentes y migratorias. Para evitar a sus depredadores, las palomas comen rápidamente, acumulando su alimento en una bolsa especial que les permitirá alimentarse tranquilamente en un sitio más seguro. Cuando nacen los pichones, éstos son alimentados con una “leche” que los padres segregan en su buche, conocida como “leche de paloma”. Contrario a otras aves terrestres que beben, las palomas pueden, literalmente, beber agua por succión; tal y como lo hacemos nosotros, y pueden beber tanta agua como el 15% de su peso corporal.
