A simple farmer from Dinalupihan, Bataan, Philippines who had an amazing story.</strong></em></p> <p><em><strong>While walking on a dusty road in his town one day he picked up a piece of paper being blown by the wind. He can’t make anything out of it because he was illiterate (he can neither read nor write).</strong></em></p> <p><em><strong>He could have thrown away his seemingly worthless piece of paper, but the Holy Spirit prompted him to show it to someone. Tatang then went to his cousin, a Roman Catholic priest, who read it for him.</strong></em></p> <p>The paper was not worthless after all, it was a pamphlet of the SDA church specifically talking about the Seventh-day Sabbath. His cousin helped him understand the pamphlet through the use of a Bible.</p> <p>His cousin noticed that he still had several questions and was curious about the Sabbath, so he told Tatang to ask the “Sabadistas” of their town. He was told where the church was located for he’d find more answers there. Also he was told to go on a Saturday because he’ll find more people to ask.</p> <p><em><strong>One Saturday morning, Tatang gained the courage to visit the local SDA church. As he reached the place, he was surprised by the warmth of the “Sabadistas” who readily welcomed and greeted people even outside the gates of the church. From the gate he was led by a hospitable member all the way to the front pews.</strong></em></p> <p><em><strong>A bit embarrassed at first, for he was only wearing his working clothes (and never anticipating he’d end up listening through the whole service just a few feet away from the pulpit), he was nevertheless delighted of the peace and joy he found that Sabbath morning. He even hummed songs he’d heard in the service all the way back to his house.</strong></em></p> <p>The next Sabbath, he was there again, but this time with the best clothes from his “baul.” He came early to church and joined in singing the songs he recognized from his last visit. He listened to the songs about God, the Bible review, the sermons of hope and the heart-felt prayers. He even enjoyed the Christian friendship extended to him.</p> <p>A few Sabbaths later they gave him a Bible of his own as he was invited to Bible studies. In the Bible studies, he asked someone to read for him as he listened. At home, he asked his wife (who finished elementary school) to read it for him using the Bible study guides.</p> <p>For several weeks, he would listen intently to Inang as she read the Bible. I believe that <em><strong>Romans 10:17 – “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”</strong></em> was indeed true to his experience as he slowly felt God’s presence in his life.</p> <p><em><strong>She then noticed that there was something different going on —he was changing! He would wake up early morning to pray (then at noon and in the evening too). He became gentle, meek and caring. He stopped drinking and eating unclean food based on the Bible. And wonder of wonders, he was actually slowly learning how to read and write with the Bible as his textbook! He even stopped working even before sundown during Friday afternoons and instead greeted the Sabbath with songs.</strong></em></p> <p>Inang was mystified of what was happening to him. She was asking, “What’s going on in that Sabadista’s church?” She never went with him at that point, so she thought he might be having an affair.</p> <p><em><strong>One Friday evening, as Tatang was sleeping, she soaked his well-pressed clothes with water. It was still dripping in the morning, but he still wore it anyway and went to church without getting angry. Anticipating a reprimand she never got made her think things through.</strong></em></p> <p>After that episode, Inang would secretly get the Bible from Tatang’s bayong, hanging at the side of their kubo, (while he worked in the fields) and read it. She read those verses that he highlighted with a pencil or pen and learned more about her husband’s transformation.</p> <p><em><strong>A few weeks, later she asked Tatang if she could join him at church. He was happy to bring her along with him and probably with their children in tow.</strong></em></p> <p><em><strong>He was later baptized and Inang followed suit. They both remained faithful to the Lord until the end. I don’t exactly remember what year they were converted, but this I know, that they named several of their children from Bible characters.</strong></em></p> <p><em><strong>My grandmother (Inang), was a major reason why my father, Pastor Abner Roque, became a minister of the gospel. And my grandfather (Tatang), was a major influence to about five generations of Seventh-day Adventists within our family and to others as well.</strong></em></p> <p>I had the chance to know him better for he was one of those who raised me. I treasure those wonderful times with him.</p> <p><em><strong>He prayed long prayers and worshiped 3 times a day – morning, noon and night; with extra prayers at 3pm, 12mn and 3am. I often hear my siblings and cousins say that I was his favorite, probably for the fact that I joined him through his daily devotions and actually enjoyed it.</strong></em></p> <p>He was a faithful believer and a very knowledgeable Bible student. He had an awesome memory that he can conduct a Bible study even without a Bible at hand, able to recall verses word for word (from Genesis to Revelation). He would share the Lord to anyone he would meet, even to a stranger in a park.</p> <p><em><strong>He was well-versed in the Adventist doctrines that I found it stirring to hear him and my father talk about it in our family worship. I also see a reflection of him in my father’s own spiritual walk with God. She was asking, “What’s going on in that Sabadista’s church?” She never went with him at that point, so she thought he might be having an affair.</p>\n<p><em><strong>One Friday evening, as Tatang was sleeping, she soaked his well-pressed clothes with water. It was still dripping in the morning, but he still wore it anyway and went to church without getting angry. Anticipating a reprimand she never got made her think things through.</strong></em></p>\n<p>After that episode, Inang would secretly get the Bible from Tatang’s bayong, hanging at the side of their kubo, (while he worked in the fields) and read it. She read those verses that he highlighted with a pencil or pen and learned more about her husband’s transformation.</p>\n<p><em><strong>A few weeks, later she asked Tatang if she could join him at church. He was happy to bring her along with him and probably with their children in tow.</strong></em></p>\n<p><em><strong>He was later baptized and Inang followed suit. They both remained faithful to the Lord until the end. I don’t exactly remember what year they were converted, but this I know, that they named several of their children from Bible characters.</strong></em></p>\n<p><em><strong>My grandmother (Inang), was a major reason why my father, Pastor Abner Roque, became a minister of the gospel. And my grandfather (Tatang), was a major influence to about five generations of Seventh-day Adventists within our family and to others as well.</strong></em></p>\n<p>I had the chance to know him better for he was one of those who raised me. I treasure those wonderful times with him.</p>\n<p><em><strong>He prayed long prayers and worshiped 3 times a day – morning, noon and night; with extra prayers at 3pm, 12mn and 3am. I often hear my siblings and cousins say that I was his favorite, probably for the fact that I joined him through his daily devotions and actually enjoyed it.</strong></em></p>\n<p>He was a faithful believer and a very knowledgeable Bible student. He had an awesome memory that he can conduct a Bible study even without a Bible at hand, able to recall verses word for word (from Genesis to Revelation). He would share the Lord to anyone he would meet, even to a stranger in a park.</p>\n<p><em><strong>He was well-versed in the Adventist doctrines that I found it stirring to hear him and my father talk about it in our family worship. I also see a reflection of him in my father’s own spiritual walk with God. It is wonderful to be able to study God’s word with you this Sabbath morning.</p> <p>The title of our message today is  “What is your name?” It is about Jacob in the Bible.</p> <p>Who was Jacob? Jacob was Esau’s twin brother. Children of Rebecca and Isaac, who was the son of Abraham and Sarah.</p> <p>Jacob and Esau were not friends. In the book of Genesis, it said that they would even fight within the womb of their mother. And even to this day, the nations that descended from them are still battling.</p> <p>Today we will learn about Jacob’s name and why is it important in his life’s journey.</p> <p><em><strong>What is in a name? Have you ever wondered why you have your name? Do you know what your name means? Have you been living up to the meaning of your name? Are you proud of your name or are you wishing you have a different name?</strong></em></p> <p><em><strong>My name is Nathan which means “God has heard or God has given”, because my parents and my sister prayed specifically for a baby boy for 3 years before I was born.</strong></em></p> <p><em><strong>Jacob’s name is interpreted as a deceiver. What a name! Who wants to have a name like Jacob? How about a name like Judas?</strong></em></p> <p><em><strong>Often times we want a name that we can be proud of – a name we would like others to hear and to say.</strong></em></p> <h2>1. Jacob wanted to be someone else</h2> <p><strong>He wasn’t happy for who he is. He wanted to be his brother Esau. – Are we like this at times? Many people nowadays want to pretend to be someone else. In doing so they lose their identity.</strong></p> <p>He wanted to be considered better and have others’ privileges. In doing so he denied who he really is and his future calling. Do you sometimes pretend to be a famous celebrity or someone else popular in school or even in your homes?</p> <h2>2. God’s personal blessing</h2> <p><em><strong>Jacob has a blessing from God even before he was born.</strong></em></p> <p><em><strong>“The Lord said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.” – </strong></em><a href="https://biblia.com/bible/niv/Gen%2025.23"><em><strong>Genesis 25:23 NIV</strong></em></a></p> <p>Do you know that before you were born God has determined a blessing for you? Jacob wanted his brother’s blessing, not knowing his blessing is greater than that.</p> <p><em><strong>God has a blessing under your name. You don’t need to grab someone else’s blessing.</strong></em></p> <h2>3. Come to God now for your personal blessing</h2> <p><em><strong>“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight in love.” – </strong></em><a href="https://biblia.com/bible/niv/Eph%201.3-4"><em><strong>Ephesians 1:3-4 NIV</strong></em></a></p> <p>Jacob in his deception together with his mother tried his best to be like Esau. He dressed like Esau, tried to talk like Esau. He even tried to feel like Esau. And smell like Esau perhaps?</p> <p>Jacob deceived his brother and father to receive Esau’s blessing. When his blind father asked him if he was truly Esau, Jacob lied.</p> <p>If we deny who we really are then we will never receive God’s richest blessings for us.</p> <blockquote><em><strong>God is asking you and me to come to Him like who you are today. He is not asking you to be better first to come to Him.</strong></em></blockquote> <p><em><strong>You have problems come to him. You are a sinner come to him. You are tired and busy…come to the LORD.</strong></em></p> <h2>4. Receiving the true blessing</h2> <p><em><strong>It took Jacob a long time before he finally realized he is holding onto a blessing that’s not his. It took a very worrisome time for him to finally realize this and his need for God to give his true blessing.</strong></em></p> <p><em><strong>“When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, “We went to your brother Esau, and now he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.” In great fear and distress Jacob divided the people who were with him into two groups, and the flocks and herds and camels as well. He thought, “If Esau comes and attacks one group, the group that is left may escape.” – </strong></em><a href="https://biblia.com/bible/niv/Gen%2032.6-8"><em><strong>Genesis 32:6-8 NIV</strong></em></a></p> <p>During this time he had a close encounter with God and his desperation he finally accepted he needed to come to God and finally ask for his true blessing.</p> <h2>5. Out with the old and in with the new</h2> <p><em><strong>As Jacob asked for a blessing God asked him for his name.</strong></em></p> <p><em><strong>“The man asked him, “What is your name?” “Jacob,” he answered. Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.” – </strong></em><a href="https://biblia.com/bible/niv/Gen%2032.27-28"><em><strong>Genesis 32:27-28 NIV</strong></em></a></p> <p><em><strong>Your name is a revelation of your character…your identity.</strong></em></p> <p>Jacob even though he pretended to be someone else for a long time it showed he was just deceiving himself and others. He confessed that he is a sinner. He came to God for him to make a change.</p> <p><em><strong>Change only started when he accepted he needs God. He then had a change of name…ISRAEL – the overcomer! Out with the old and in with the new life in Jesus!</strong></em></p> <p><em><strong>Would you like to be an overcomer today like Israel?</strong></em></p> <p><em><strong>There is a battle in your life today. All you need is to surrender and come to the Lord just as you are right now today, and God will give you the victory in your life!</strong></em></p> <p><em><strong>And then the old you will be changed to a new you – an overcomer, a victor through the power of the Lord!</strong></em></p> <p>Let us sincerely come to the Lord today like Israel to gain victory like no other! May God’s rich blessings be upon everyone today, this is my prayer. Amen. God’s personal blessing</h2> <p><em><strong>Jacob has a blessing from God even before he was born.</strong></em></p> <p><em><strong>“The Lord said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.” – </strong></em><a href="https://biblia.com/bible/niv/Gen%2025.23"><em><strong>Genesis 25:23 NIV</strong></em></a></p> <p>Do you know that before you were born God has determined a blessing for you? Jacob wanted his brother’s blessing, not knowing his blessing is greater than that.</p> <p><em><strong>God has a blessing under your name. You don’t need to grab someone else’s blessing.</strong></em></p> <h2>3. Come to God now for your personal blessing</h2> <p><em><strong>“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight in love.” – </strong></em><a href="https://biblia.com/bible/niv/Eph%201.3-4"><em><strong>Ephesians 1:3-4 NIV</strong></em></a></p> <p>Jacob in his deception together with his mother tried his best to be like Esau. He dressed like Esau, tried to talk like Esau. He even tried to feel like Esau. And smell like Esau perhaps?</p> <p>Jacob deceived his brother and father to receive Esau’s blessing. When his blind father asked him if he was truly Esau, Jacob lied.</p> <p>If we deny who we really are then we will never receive God’s richest blessings for us.</p> <blockquote><em><strong>God is asking you and me to come to Him like who you are today. He is not asking you to be better first to come to Him.</strong></em></blockquote> <p><em><strong>You have problems come to him. You are a sinner come to him. You are tired and busy…come to the LORD.</strong></em></p> <h2>4. Receiving the true blessing</h2> <p><em><strong>It took Jacob a long time before he finally realized he is holding onto a blessing that’s not his. It took a very worrisome time for him to finally realize this and his need for God to give his true blessing.</strong></em></p> <p><em><strong>“When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, “We went to your brother Esau, and now he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.” In great fear and distress Jacob divided the people who were with him into two groups, and the flocks and herds and camels as well. He thought, “If Esau comes and attacks one group, the group that is left may escape.” – </strong></em><a href="https://biblia.com/bible/niv/Gen%2032.6-8"><em><strong>Genesis 32:6-8 NIV</strong></em></a></p> <p>During this time he had a close encounter with God and his desperation he finally accepted he needed to come to God and finally ask for his true blessing.</p> <h2>5. Out with the old and in with the new</h2> <p><em><strong>As Jacob asked for a blessing God asked him for his name.</strong></em></p> <p><em><strong>“The man asked him, “What is your name?” “Jacob,” he answered. He confessed that he is a sinner. He came to God for him to make a change.</p> <p><em><strong>Change only started when he accepted he needs God. He then had a change of name…ISRAEL – the overcomer! Out with the old and in with the new life in Jesus!</strong></em></p> <p><em><strong>Would you like to be an overcomer today like Israel?</strong></em></p> <p><em><strong>There is a battle in your life today. All you need is to surrender and come to the Lord just as you are right now today, and God will give you the victory in your life!</strong></em></p> <p><em><strong>And then the old you will be changed to a new you – an overcomer, a victor through the power of the Lord!</strong></em></p> <p>Let us sincerely come to the Lord today like Israel to gain victory like no other! May God’s rich blessings be upon everyone today, this is my prayer. Amen. It is wonderful to be able to study God’s word with you this Sabbath morning.</p>\n<p>The title of our message today is&nbsp; “What is your name?” It is about Jacob in the Bible.</p>\n<p>Who was Jacob? Jacob was Esau’s twin brother. Children of Rebecca and Isaac, who was the son of Abraham and Sarah.</p>\n<p>Jacob and Esau were not friends. In the book of Genesis, it said that they would even fight within the womb of their mother. And even to this day, the nations that descended from them are still battling.</p>\n<p>Today we will learn about Jacob’s name and why is it important in his life’s journey.</p>\n<p><em><strong>What is in a name? Have you ever wondered why you have your name? Do you know what your name means? Have you been living up to the meaning of your name? Are you proud of your name or are you wishing you have a different name?</strong></em></p>\n<p><em><strong>My name is Nathan which means “God has heard or God has given”, because my parents and my sister prayed specifically for a baby boy for 3 years before I was born.</strong></em></p>\n<p><em><strong>Jacob’s name is interpreted as a deceiver. What a name! Who wants to have a name like Jacob? How about a name like Judas?</strong></em></p>\n<p><em><strong>Often times we want a name that we can be proud of – a name we would like others to hear and to say.</strong></em></p>\n<h2>1. Jacob wanted to be someone else</h2>\n<p><strong>He wasn’t happy for who he is. He wanted to be his brother Esau. – Are we like this at times? Many people nowadays want to pretend to be someone else. In doing so they lose their identity.</strong></p>\n<p>He wanted to be considered better and have others’ privileges. In doing so he denied who he really is and his future calling. Do you sometimes pretend to be a famous celebrity or someone else popular in school or even in your homes?</p>\n<h2>2. Thoughts to Ponder: One late evening, we realized that our baby Daniel just finished his last carton of powdered milk. And so, like always, I headed straight to the nearest mini-mart. On the shelf were 4 cartons of powdered milk. The first 2 were natural flavored with slightly damaged cartons. Upon seeing this, I turned to the other 2 at the back. They were in good condition and in yummy vanilla flavor! I got one and placed it on the checkout counter. After the cashier used his laser code reader, he told me that I can’t buy it as he discussed with another attendant. Confused as I’ve always bought this brand and flavor, I asked them if there was a problem? It turns out that they’ve electronically tagged priced this specific brand and flavor for only 1 baht. They don’t want me to buy it, because they think it was an error. And because I really wanted this specific carton and flavor, I told them I’d pay for the normal price. I got another carton to check the price…it was still priced 1 baht. They insisted that I get one of the damaged cartons instead. I refused and again offered to pay the normal price. After making a call to their main office, they came back and told me buy the 2 cartons for only 2 baht. Surprised I once again offered pay for the normal price, but they said that their superiors told them to give me both cartons for the price of 2 baht. As I walked home, it dawned on me that I may have just bought the cheapest 2 cartons of powdered milk in my life. Daniel’s prayer might have been, give me today my daily milk…and surely enough God did for only 2 baht! Dear Father, Thank you for reminding us in a mysterious (and awesome) way about Your lasting providence in our lives. Praises be to You. In Jesus Name, Amen.

As they see adults struggle before success, they tend to emulate this in their own tasks. </p> <p> The value of effort is emphasized, but its lasting effects are not yet known. These findings coming from laboratory settings are beneficial to parents who are trying to instill the value of effort to their children.</p> <blockquote><em><strong>“There’s some pressure on parents to make everything look easy and not get frustrated in front of their children,” says Laura Schulz, a professor of cognitive science at MIT. “There’s nothing you can learn from a laboratory study that directly applies to parenting, but this does at least suggest that it may not be a bad thing to show your children that you are working hard to achieve your goals.”Leonard and Schulz were interested in studying how children might learn, at a very early age, how to decide when to try hard and when it’s not worth the effort. As they see adults struggle before success, they tend to emulate this in their own tasks.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;The value of effort is emphasized, but its lasting effects are not yet known. These findings coming from laboratory settings are beneficial to parents who are trying to instill the value of effort to their children.</p>\n<blockquote><em><strong>“There’s some pressure on parents to make everything look easy and not get frustrated in front of their children,” says Laura Schulz, a professor of cognitive science at MIT. “There’s nothing you can learn from a laboratory study that directly applies to parenting, but this does at least suggest that it may not be a bad thing to show your children that you are working hard to achieve your goals.”Leonard and Schulz were interested in studying how children might learn, at a very early age, how to decide when to try hard and when it’s not worth the effort.
