| title | Tuna in the Maldives (forget the parts.... out the window!) |
| body | Maldivian Tuna is the second or third biggest producer of tuna in the world and one of the biggest economically significant industries for the islands and importantly they banned long line fishing a while back so it’s pretty much only pole fishing which is ‘sort of’ sustainable! A lot of your tinned tuna comes from here or Sri Lanka. We came across an interesting find during our walk all around this amazing island. On this island the main catch of Skipjack tuna are gutted and the head removed. Then boiled really, really hard for 30 minutes Then dried and smoked and sold mostly to Sri Lanka (the biggest producer of tuna...?) But what we found really significant and interesting here was the byproduct they made from boiling the heads and waste down to a really thick consistency of fish stock... This guy showed us the finished product in a barrel and we all practically wretched but I thought “f**k it, I need to know what this is about” and asked if I could try it, so I stuck my finger in that barrel and made a serious personal discovery, the most delicious fish, sort of stock, made from a byproduct or waste product of a sustainable fishery...! Basically it’s like marmite, Vegemite, Bovril, but hugely more delicious (in my opinion) and ‘sustainable’ and clearly full of all the omegas that everyone thinks they love! It’s not cheap and it normally gets flown from Male to Thailand then fermented into nam pla which (in my opinion) is a massive waste of this amazing product. Obviously I bought as much as I could afford (about $3 at the time) Another business plan brewing... the closest taste I can put it to is botarga, which is the dried mullet roe from Italy and costs £100’s+ a kilo, super expensive but super delicious, not as delicious as 'Jesse’s Fishemite’ soon at a Whole Foods near you 🤗😂🤑 What we really need to do is encourage the big 6 fish catching nations to do the same, it has so much potential for everything from gourmet eating to farmed fish feed and fertiliser, rather than throwing all the waste and any other fish they don't have a quota for back in the sea either destroyed or dead... |

| body | This is Muli island in the Maldives, absolutely stunning with beautiful local people who really care about their island, keep it pristine and teach their children to keep it pristine. In the first photo (can’t see it there) there is a famous wave 🌊 to the left of the shot called ‘muli’s’ (obviously), there is world class diving and snorkeling around the walls and off the drops, tidal flats with incredible sea grass and coral like I have never seen anywhere in my life, boiling with all sorts of fish including GT’s, Bones and triggers. Beautiful- beaches, surfing, snorkeling/diving, flats fishing and deep sea fishing. I honestly don’t know what more you could want in a holiday... and you can stay here for a fraction of the price of one of the vast horrible and weird resorts that cover this country and do all the aforementioned activities for almost nothing in comparison. Muli was really beautiful, if you ever want to go, a good place to start and source of local knowledge would be @amberjack1412 and he is also an excellent fishing guide and surfer! Wonderful morning out popping with @amberjack1412 for some unbelievably strong Maldivian GT’s, it gets better- The highlight of the day! 🌟Ivor spent a month with me recently in the Andaman's and never managed to land a GT, he was convinced he was totally jinxed, and then he goes and gets this absolute f**ing Maldivian belter today then another beauty 4 casts later! Great to see that expression on his face finally seeing what it’s all about after getting steamed by this train, pulled the wire clean through the popper while pulling the boat round in circles - then in the next photo he looks like a seasoned pro, laughing away, he then started telling me how to work the lure shortly afterwards 😀. Catching fish yourself is great but there is nothing better than seeing your good friends doing it well! Well done Ivor! 🙌👏🐋🎣 and thanks again to @amberjack1412 Flying fish are amazing. No matter how many millions of them you see all over the world in tropic waters, they are always an enjoyable and a stunning sight. 🙌🦅🐟 more to follow i guess... xxx |

| body | 'Syria is calling’ there is quite a bit of this promotional graffiti dotted around Male, it’s dominantly Sharia here. Makes you wonder how many have left the islands and joined the war.. Back in the water finally! Thanks to all the friendly and helpful boat yard workers at Gulf Craft especially Prakash, (pictured there) the driver of all machinery, from Chennai. This boat lift is a seriously cool bit of equipment, able to lift 150 tons, watching it in action is a spectacle. 💪🏼🏗 Goodbye burning rubbish heap dead ship island. Can’t say we are going to miss your incessant steaming acrid burning smells or overly industrial atmosphere but it was interesting all the same. The China Maldives friendship bridge ☺️ paid for by China obviously. Connecting Male city to the airport. A hugely beneficial friendship all around I imagine..🤔 the US’s biggest (and possibly only) Indian Ocean naval base is in southern Chagos (British Indian Ocean Territory) 200 miles south of the Maldives.. My cousin Ivor joined us on the boat yesterday 🙌 and later that night on a live bait, floated way out the back of the boat with a balloon, hooked a large fish that was fought for around ten minutes with some incredibly strong runs until it came up alongside the boat only just out of sight, then proceeded up the under the anchor chain, snapping the rod from the strain and angle then eventually broke the 120lb mono leader near the hook. We shall never know what it was and needless to say Ivor had a restless nights sleep... but you never forget ‘the one that got away’ irst premature tasters of ‘Vamanos XXXX’ being where we are in the world it’s pretty much impossible to get alcohol outside of resorts so we have taken to brewing our own! Ivor brought out some ‘turbo yeast’ him and captain T added sugar to juice and sugar and in 12 hours the main ‘cauldron’ brew should have completed fermentation but for safety sake, we absolutely needed to sample some slightly prematurely... 🥂🍾 Zac (Chow Chow) from Oz has joined the crew, flew from Borneo to stay with us until at least Madagascar. "body": "\n'Syria is calling’ there is quite a bit of this promotional graffiti dotted around Male, it’s dominantly Sharia here. Makes you wonder how many have left the islands and joined the war..\n\nBack in the water finally! Thanks to all the friendly and helpful boat yard workers at Gulf Craft especially Prakash, (pictured there) the driver of all machinery, from Chennai. This boat lift is a seriously cool bit of equipment, able to lift 150 tons, watching it in action is a spectacle. 💪🏼🏗\n\nGoodbye burning rubbish heap dead ship island. Can’t say we are going to miss your incessant steaming acrid burning smells or overly industrial atmosphere but it was interesting all the same.\n\nThe China Maldives friendship bridge ☺️ paid for by China obviously. Connecting Male city to the airport. A hugely beneficial friendship all around I imagine..🤔 the US’s biggest (and possibly only) Indian Ocean naval base is in southern Chagos (British Indian Ocean Territory) 200 miles south of the Maldives..\n\nMy cousin Ivor joined us on the boat yesterday 🙌 and later that night on a live bait, floated way out the back of the boat with a balloon, hooked a large fish that was fought for around ten minutes with some incredibly strong runs until it came up alongside the boat only just out of sight, then proceeded up the under the anchor chain, snapping the rod from the strain and angle then eventually broke the 120lb mono leader near the hook. We shall never know what it was and needless to say Ivor had a restless nights sleep... but you never forget ‘the one that got away’\n\nirst premature tasters of ‘Vamanos XXXX’ being where we are in the world it’s pretty much impossible to get alcohol outside of resorts so we have taken to brewing our own! Ivor brought out some ‘turbo yeast’ him and captain T added sugar to juice and sugar and in 12 hours the main ‘cauldron’ brew should have completed fermentation but for safety sake, we absolutely needed to sample some slightly prematurely... 🥂🍾 \n\n\nZac (Chow Chow) from Oz has joined the crew, flew from Borneo to stay with us until at least Madagascar. Here Zac with his biggest catch of all time, I know it’ll get broken when we are heading to Chagos but so nice to see a beautiful fish on board that’ll provide meals for days!\nBoat to boat local deals 🤗 Ivor dealing with the lobster negotiating. | body | I’d like to say it was all sunsets, sunrises, adventures, beautiful fish ect. But that morning we woke up to a missing dingy that could have realistically only been stolen while we slept on the anchorage near a remote uninhabited island. It’s a huge blow to our journey as it’s how we get to shore to shop, forage and (most importantly to me) fish! The moon is rising late in the night so it would have been a perfect time to come and steal it and there had been a few lobster fisherman inspecting our boat earlier in the day. A huge shame as they will not get anything from it, just cause us a huge amount of annoyance and it cost. It may be recovered once they realise there is no value in it but it’s extremely annoying.. Captain Terry is almost obsessive about squid and one morning he managed to get one, they sometimes hang around under the boat waiting for small fish and krill type planktonic creatures, hopefully he’ll get a few more to make a meal out of it! 🦑Calamari! Since our dingy got stolen we have resorted to the paddle boards for getting ashore which as a first timer I found them very pleasant, super buoyant and with a couple of dry bags you can sort of keep your things dry. I then had a 6 ft shark bite the end of my fly line off while casting at a bone fish?! Then dragging the bone of out the back reel high, tip brushing the water, it caught a rock and disappeared-faster than I could turn around, the tide coming Over the wall was like a ragging river so I’ve left my half a sage rod (worth $800) out there somewhere! Some serious graffing on this Maldivian atoll, actually seems to be a popular past time on all the inhabited islands here, though I have not been offered any ‘free weed’ as of yet and thus not been able to ‘free ur (my) mind’ these graffers need to have some substance behind their artwork This guy - all in the expression, ‘what the f**ck are you, you weird red freak, get off my island with your ginger disease’ I have literally hundreds of photos of dolphins, some much, much better and more dramatic than this one from today but we had a real sea life show today with huge amounts of dolphins of all different species, two big groups of pilot whales and a bill fish bonanza, watching them smashing tuna close to the wall of an atoll. All hugely welcome sights, beautiful and breathtaking. Beautiful creatures that often come and hang around the boat while we are on anchor. Watching their behaviour is fascinating, the way they shoal, the changing of colours. When in the lagoons these local shallow water species are normally jet black, which I find peculiar but as soon as a fish, ray or anything that could pose as a potential threat, they instantly turn a sandy white From Paradises to Apocalypse.. 🔥🔥🔥 we arrived on an island very near Male, the capital of the Maldives, to haul the Cat out for maintenance. Sunken ships, kilometers of burning rubbish, sea awash with debris and chemical spills.. (all in these two photos) and actually this island, Male and many of these islands are built on rubbish and waste. They have a rather serious waste problem here but building islands out of them is one answer to the rising sea levels I guess... Red man (me) getting stuck into some maintenance on the props as we are up on the hard stand in the boat yard. It’s a huge change from the remote atolls of the Maldives and indescribable picturesque colours of the ocean and atolls but I’m enjoying the overly busy boat yard, all the comings and goings and some comedic local goings on. This enormous heap of burning rubbish is like a volcano 🌋 it’s almost beautiful in a horrible way. Male the island capital of the Maldives. I have only previously heard and read bad things about the place but I found the complete opposite during my two day stop over. The narrow streets are mostly lined with trees and parked motorbikes and as you walk through them you have riders darting around you from all directions with out having to particularly worry about getting yourself run over. The people are absolutely lovely, incredibly helpful, knowledgeable and kind, there is absolutely no ‘tourist tax’ on anything, hugely surprising considering how tourism is the key driver of the economy here. Saying that, It wasn’t cheap though, almost teetering on UK prices for the goods and services I needed to visit the place for. But clean, friendly, honest and extremely pleasant ❤️🙌 Male! A city at complete standstill. Friday being the most important day in the Islamic week many shops and services are closed. But I have never witnessed this at the 1pm prayer the whole of the usually chaotic Male fell silent except for the sounds of prayer from the mosque’s throughout the island city. More intriguing and spectacular was the streets were completely blocked with people on their prayer mats, hard to define from this picture (as out of respect, I didn’t want to get too close taking pictures) it at every intersection hundreds and hundreds of men were kneeling heads to the asphalt on the street at times, no traffic, no horns, absolutely no noise, nothing except the mosque and this huge show of passion for their religion. Moving and beautiful. As soon as the last Salam aleikum was spoken they all stood and the horns, traffic and hum drum of the city ignited instantaneously. Quite spectacular. 🕌❤️🙌 ON TO PART THREE!!!--- |

| title | Sailing through the Maldives Part One of Four...! (possibly) |
| body | We arrived at the northernmost tip of the Maldives at the beginning of May. We had to wait a few days to receive our ‘cruising’ permit before we are allowed to sail south through the chain of 1100 islands which only 200 of them are locally inhabited. Though we were anchored in about 4m’s over sand with rich coral reefs full of life to either side of the boat, so I was not complaining! To reach atolls of this scale and diversity by boat and in complete control of where we go and when, armed to the teeth with fishing kit and diving gear has always been a dream of mine so it would be fair to say I was quite excited... This little Tern came and perched in the exact same place on the boat quite often while we were sitting on the anchor waiting for our clearance to cruise down through the Maldives, which by what little we had seen by then so was completely stunning. This stunning fish has loads of different names all over the tropics but my favourite is ‘lunar tailed coral trout’ the guy behind him also has many names but as a migratory species to the Maldives the locals here call it a ‘lesser freckled red man’ extremely rare and is known to be dangerous when woken from slumber, I’d avoid it with a wide birth and encourage you to call your local law enforcement agency or similar if you should see one sailing towards you. No spring lamb in the Maldives so had to make do with crab for Easter lunch. Tough life! [Screen Shot 2018-05-10 at 17.15.29.png](https://steemitimages.com/DQmSgJ15eoMriwABUV3pFLWoeKB2Cmx3QhSenPonBEPR1zf/Screen%20Shot%202018-05-10%20at%2017.15.29.png) Fly fishing in the first quiet lagoon we stopped at for Blue Trevally’s, occasionally seen big Giant Travelly’s and Bonefish produces all sorts of interesting and beautiful species of fish that often come out of sight and take your fly when you are casting at those bigger fish. It’s fairly annoying to a degree when targeting a specific fish but some of them are really stunning. In order (what I call them!) - Blue trevally, small jack trevally, false bonefish, small coral trout, parrot fish.! Bonefish are right up there with my favourite fish in the world to catch, almost level with Salmon and Sea Trout (though so much stronger!). The conditions of wind, with sunlight direction and the shallow water you need to accurately and discreetly target this clever fish with light tackle, small flies and well presented casts with the fly rod make it addictive fishing. I have seen a few on other islands but haven’t had the ideal topography to actually pursue them in particular, the first atoll we have arrived on with the first semblance of a ‘flats’ (a very tidal zone that can almost dry out at low, preferably with sea grass abundant) the first one I had a proper cast at while wading and bingo! I also saw plenty of trigger fish, blue t’s, some GT’s, cruising at high speeds out of range, but still on the flats.. so the Maldives are shaping up to be quite and interesting fly fishing destination. Sashimi yellow fin tuna with a wasabi poo 💩 cut and eaten 30 minutes after capture. It’s possible that it may be the best sashimi I have eaten and being pretty fishy, I’ve eaten a fair bit in my time 🍣 On an island which you can walk across the entirety in about 10 minutes, where the traffic has no rules as to what side of the road to drive on or what speed, though just over 10 miles an hour or slower seemed to be the sort of general pace, one of the main occupations seemed to be taxi driving... 🤔 and this guys car is amazing, there were others similarly kitted out things with the spoiler and body kit absolutely necessary for aerodynamic driving in the Maldives. vroom, vvvvvroommm! More catches on the fly from Maldivian flats. The first is a crab / shrimp / bottom feeding trevally that I have yet to accurately identify. The next is a unicorn fish that I have seen often snorkeling and diving. After turning up unannounced on a resort island that looked to us like it was under construction (which part of it was) after much trepidation with the security, then the management, then the general management (overseas) we were welcomed with open arms (probably because it was in the middle of its soft landing and not fully occupied) and then given a guided golf buggy tour around the island by lovely Elena, who mentioned she used to be a racing driver in Russia as we were scraping the edges of the stilted board walk. The place looked fairly ugly when nearing on the Cat but actually ashore there was something rather nice about it, though not my dream holiday, I could certainly see the attraction. The rooms were hugely lavish, I especially loved the loo with a view and the bathtub. The Dolphin Island Fairmont doesn’t come cheap though, prices starting at about $2000 a night going up to as much as $17,000 a night for a tented villa in the jungle which I found utterly bizarre as you’d think you go to the Maldives for the coconut fringed beaches, sunsets and sunrises ect. I might be missing a trick here- buy a cheap bit of jungle somewhere, set up a few tents and advertise in the Middle East and China... We were asked to use the facilities (bar and restaurant) as part of the deal of inviting us on to their private island which also didn’t come cheap, especially for two ropey old sea dogs like us.. |

| title | Crossing the Laccadive Sea - Sri Lanka to Maldives |
| body | Sunsets, sunrises and moonlight while sailing across the Lakshadweep sea from Sri Lanka to the Maldives While sailing for days on end between land masses in the Indian Ocean, we take it in shifts to keep watch. Being up late at night watching the moon set over the ocean, lying on deck gazing at the brightest stars i have ever seen coupled with the occasional disintegrating meteorites, totally awe inspired by the most intense and fierce lightning storms in the distance, dolphins playing and speaking loudly with each other at the front of the boat under moonlight and the sight of phosphorescent microscopic creatures sparkling like tiny stars darting across the surface of the water. All these things at night are incredibly difficult and totally pointless to attempt to catch on on camera, especially for a simple man like me manned with just an iPhone.. but occasionally, just occasionally! Watch the slo mo vid at https://www.instagram.com/p/Bg6HxIuFl7P/?taken-by=jesse_james_one - I am proud of that one. A lovely Mahi Mahi, (Dorado in Spanish, Dolphin fish in certain English speaking countries) caught mid trip from Sri Lanka to the Maldives. Luckily I have a captain who likes fishing almost as much as me so we have plenty of lures out the back and will slow even when on the sail to retrieve our catch. Sailing for days or weeks on end some times, and actually we are looking at another two to three months with everything in between us and Madagascar, we have to be as resourceful as possible with our food supplies. "body": "\n\nSunsets, sunrises and moonlight while sailing across the Lakshadweep sea from Sri Lanka to the Maldives\n\nWhile sailing for days on end between land masses in the Indian Ocean, we take it in shifts to keep watch. Watch the slo mo vid at https://www.instagram.com/p/Bg6HxIuFl7P/?taken-by=jesse_james_one - I am proud of that one.\n\n\nA lovely Mahi Mahi, (Dorado in Spanish, Dolphin fish in certain English speaking countries) caught mid trip from Sri Lanka to the Maldives. This beautiful creature has provided us with several incredible meals with some left over for drying into deliciously cured fish jerky.\n\n\n\nSushi while sailing across the Lakshadweep sea 🌊🐠🍣 a couple of things we did with our beautiful fresh Indian Ocean Mahi Mahi while mid trip.\n\nNext post - Maldives so far.. x",

| title | In and around Galle, Sri Lanka, March 2018 |
| body | An ExPat friend's birthday party on Galle's Beach or 'Dewata' beach, a relative haven from tourism in comparison to surrounding areas. Unawatuna, Hikkadua and Arugam bay are Sri Lanka’s premier beach destinations. I never visited the latter but the former two were like Goa x Costa del Sol combined in levels of tourist activity. Sri Lanka is one of the worlds biggest exporters of commercial yellow fin tuna, these are actually skipjack and used in most local breakfast dishes and curries but beautiful quality, although to some when not very, very fresh an acquired taste. The world is on the brink of having a marine collapse and now, more than ever we should be conscious of what we eat, everyone is hyped about not eating meat but not enough about sea food. The sea is a wild and finite resource that I I hope we can save before it collapses completely. String hoppers are one of the more popular breakfast carbs that I have came across in Sri Lanka, basically over cooked vermicelli noodles made of different rice, another one is white bread (I saw a man half my size eat a whole loaf in 10 minutes) usually served with a beautiful daal and a fairly plain fish (tuna) curry with it. Not Sri Lankan cooking at its best but the real deal. A meticulous five man cast net operation in the main Ceylon Fisheries Harbor in Galle. Pushing the tightly packed long liner boats apart before dropping it deep into the harbour to collect these largish sardine type fish that are numerous under the boats of an extremely busy fishing port, they went straight into tanks so as to use them later as live bait towards baiting the thousands of hooks that any one of these boats have numerous kilometer long strings of. It occurred to me a while back that the whole ‘dolphin friendly tuna’ was and is a complete sales play, praying on our love of sea mammals and general misunderstanding of the sea and fishing. Dolphins will never take a baited hook of any sort as they are too intelligent and can see and sense the line, hook and all-round unnatural appearance of the prey in this form. Any ocean fisherman of even very limited experience will know this. There are extremely rare cases of technical sport fisherman catching them while using a live bait with the latest technology in Japanese Fluorocarbon (which is a type of line that refracts light in a similar way to water thus making it more difficult to see) this new strain of Fluorocarbon is hundreds of dollars for very short distances so no commercial long line operation would ever consider using it in place of cheaper nylon line. Amazing what people get away with in advertising, praying on people’s plain ignorance and good will. The same can be said about so many products that we buy day to day, I think possibly the most questionable is probably the ‘organic’ label which is shamefully and terribly abused in many cases (not all of course!). Just to add to this, currently there is almost no such thing as truly sustainable fisheries or even farming practices both in the sea and on land, from meat through everything to agriculture... But that’s all up for informed debate... Betel nut (or pan when mixed with tobacco) is one of the worlds biggest drug problems, after nicotine and alcohol. Anyone who’s been anywhere in Asia will probably have seen thousands of people with purple grins, spitting into the street. This is a huge Sri Lanka package (meant to make at least 4 parcels) - the nut is in the top left, the dark stuff to the right is leaf tobacco but crucially on the bottom left is the lime or in many cases a strong alkaline that acts as a catalyst for the nut. It’s actually quite a serious stimulant. They have banned the use of tobacco in ‘pan’ in India now but it’s still widely used. During the first part of March a Buddhist vs Muslim feud in the hills around Kandy broke out and they banned the whole country’s use of any major social media servers with the idea being to stop the use of social media to plan mass rioting / demonstrations and the spreading of ‘fake news’ that could agitate the the situation further. With the use of a VPN application I was able to continue communication with family and friends. Army presence stepped up a huge notch after the initial trouble in Kandi. These guys and hundreds of others from the SL army were just a showing of force by being in any place there is any Islamic / Buddhist population. There doesn’t appear to be any further. I’m not a huge fan of military as a whole but if their presence alone stops violence between religions then I fully support it. These guys were absolutely charming and happy to update me on the situation. Little Sademi probably has the sweetest smile in the whole country and always has a drawing or picture for me when I visit her and her amazing family. A lovely Sri Lankan family who fed me and spent time with me with absolutely no expectations or preconceptions of my potential western wealth. I met them through an interesting character called Mahinder who I will write about later because it’s a good story with hopefully a happy ending (he’s the one with the monks) they were always calling me to make sure I went to see them and spend time with them, probably just a presence of a totally different culture for them that rationalises them entertaining me so frequently. They had very little money and worked very hard to provide but they would always feed me when I spent time with them, hungry or not! And the crab in one picture here was a real expense that they wanted to share with me before I left. Wonderful in so many ways. I was drinking Arrack with some of the local guys on the beach after a few of the the fishermen had just got back from over a month’s fishing trip. A celebration of sorts. A brilliant joke from one of the lads about this chap -‘why has this guy got only one tooth left?’ Me - Why? ‘Because he’s a f**cking rickshaw driver!! 👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼 This was the view of Galle fort, a Unesco world heritage site, as we sailed out of Galle towards the Maldives... |
