      "body": "In the UK, retail investment products focused on retirement are complex. Partly due to the needs of the investor, but also due to years and years of successive governments using pensions as both the carrot and stick. \n\nAs one of the oldest and most complex financial markets in the world, the range of pension schemes and retirement vehicles is vast. With the introduction of greater pension freedoms in 2015, the lines between investment and retirement for many have blurred, a concept taken further with the launch of the Lifetime ISA in 2017.\n\n---\n\nLifetime ISAs (LISAs) have a few interesting behaviours which lend themselves to being implemented in a smart contract:\n * You can contribute up to £4,000 each tax year\n * The Government tops up your contributions by 25%\n * You can withdraw the money to fund your first house purchase\n * You can withdraw the money after your 60th birthday to fund retirement\n * Any other withdrawal leads to a penalty being applied \n\nSmart contracts offer a way of implementing many of these behaviours, automating them and providing full auditability as part of a distributed ledger. \n\n## What is a smart contract?\n\nA blockchain is essentially the distributed ledger. A shared, auditable and reliable record of who owns what, cryptographically secured and validated. \n\nEthereum is an open source blockchain, which implements the idea of smart contracts within the distributed ledger. A contract is essentially some code, executed by the participants of the network. This effectively makes Ethereum one huge distributed computing platform. Smart contracts can hold tokens on the blockchain, and the code they execute can move the tokens around. \n\n## A smart ISA\n\nTo model the LISA as a smart contract, imagine that the contrat is deployed by the ISA Provider. To track contributions and each individuals investment, we can simply have a balance of tokens - these tokens can simply be though of as being tied to Sterling for a cash ISA, or units in some mutual fund or investment portfolio for Stocks and Shares.\n\nThe Ethereum website has a [sample token contract](https://www.ethereum.org/token), from which we can make some LISA specific tweaks.\n\n### Recording contributions by year\nThe default token code looks after each individuals balance, but we need to store their contributions by year, prior to any of the bonus being applied.\n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmcuFmD83jmzjWmfRHUGiK4XkJN1DYKqKSq3TewZyuAnJW/image.png)\n\n### Contributing to the ISA\n\nWhen we contribute, two things need to happen:\n * Are we contributing within our allowance (£4,000 per tax year)\n * Add in the Government bonus\n\n A simple contract, applying a contribution limit might look like this:\n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmVPzdeq8GomHu8GmkKnB3V3BjP34BoLyE551wUzP92PJx/image.png)\n\nOnce the contract is deployed, we can call our transfer function to represent the investor making a contribution to their ISA:\n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmeiXhw92Nu145Fk4w3fYEjvj9AZesVMHPjiRBsowxgFE8/image.png)\n\nIf we try and contribute too much (over the ISA_LIMIT) then the contract gives us a warning that it will probably fail:\n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmR6jmcUCWPcjrZiXfs2vsV8mf1Uo7W1ARkf7EcLzu54Ka/image.png)\n\n### Checking the balance\n\nOnce our investor has contributed to their ISA, we can check the balance using the balanceOf call on the front page of the contract. \n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmThP5q4G1NanHmAM9jJ4SdvsH2PmTFXzZDtmfJ9z4STqQ/image.png)\n\nSo what the smart contract provides us, is a simple, convenient and auditable way of inforcing the contract behaviours, on top of which you could build an investment platform or robo-adviser type proposition.\n\nAsset management companies are quickly embracing blockchain and smart contracts as part of their trading and administration infrastructure. JP Morgan have released Quorum, a modified version of the Ethereum blockchain which is better suited for private networks.       "body": "Some quick snaps from the garden. Tonight I found two stag beetles, one clumsily flying through the air, the other resting on the fence. After flying about for 5 mins, this chap had a rest on a picnic table, so I grabbed the camera to take some shots.       "body": "The Ethereum network represents one of the most interesting technological developments in the past few years, taking the fundamental principles of a blockchain, and allowing executable “contracts” to be written. These contracts can be relatively simple but also incredibly powerful.\n\nThis post will walk you through setting up a development environment so that you can deploy and test your own smart contracts on the Ethereum test blockchain (“Ropsten”).\n\n## Installing Parity\nParity is a fast Ethereum browser, a tool which allows you to interact with the blockchain. On my laptop at least, it is significantly faster to synchronise and use than geth, which is probably the “standard” tool for interacting with the Ethereum blockchain.\n\nTo install for your platform, follow the instructions on the Parity site. If you use Mac OSX or Ubuntu, this is as simple as running the following command:\n\n> bash <(curl https://get.parity.io -Lk)\n\n## Connecting to the Ropsten testnet\nTo run Parity and connect to the testnet, use the following command:\n\n>parity — chain=ropsten\n\nYou’ll see a stream of stuff fly by in the terminal as Parity connects to the testnet, and starts the process of synchronising the blockchain. This might take a while…but rest assured it’s much faster than using the Ethereum Wallet app.\n\nWhile you wait, you can still get started using Parity through its lovely web interface.\n\n## Setting up Parity\n\nParity comes with a really nice, fully featured web interface. This allows you to view and create wallets (where you keep your Ether), interact with other apps and to create or interact with Contracts.\n\nBy default, the parity web interface should be available at http://127.0.0.1:8180\n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmTjFovMNZZw2Tv5x792j6SvkAgy29RKfzK2aM7Xatoa5x/image.png)\n\nWhen you first launch the web interface, it will guide you through creating a wallet. Use a strong password, but remember as this is on the testnet, the Ether you collect here aren’t anywhere near as valuable as “real” Ether.\n\n## Get some testnet Ether\nTo deploy and interact with a Contract on the blockchain (testnet or otherwise) you’ll need some Ether. Getting Ether on the testnet is a little easier than on the main blockchain, and there are a couple of options:\n * Try and find a working testnet faucet — you’ll enter your wallet address and (hopefully) receive some Ether\n * Ask nicely in the Ethereum gitter chat\n * Set up Ethminer to mine for some Ether\n\nAfter a bit of time trying the first two options, I resolved to mine my own Ether, and it wasn’t too hard.\n\n## Setting up Ethminer\nEthminer is a separate tool which talks to the blockchain via Parity with the aim of validating the transactions that occur. As a reward for validating the transactions, you will occasionally receive some Ether. It’s not super quick to receive the Ether, but it’s pretty quick to setup, so I just left it for a few hours and came back to almost 100 Ether in my wallet. WooHoo!\nTo install in Ubuntu:\n\n> sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ethereum/ethereum\n> sudo apt-get update\n> sudo apt-get install ethereum ethminer\n\nNow, to get everything hooked up, you’ll need to run a slightly modified Parity command. First, make a note of the wallet address you created in the web interface. Now restart parity using the following:\n\n> parity — chain=ropsten --rpc --author=<your_wallet_address>\n\nNow in a new terminal window start ethminer:\n\n> ethminer -G\n\nNote: The -G option enables GPU mining, which speeds it up. However, this does assume you have a suitable card and have set up your using the appropriate graphics card drivers etc. If it doesn’t work, try again without the -G.\n\n![](https://steemitimages.com/DQmR5NG2Z7rqE2T8FAaqArDiPgnbJPCSGRR8nDNKPysoRTe/image.png)\n\nAgain, you’ll see a wall of stuff stream past — this is ethminer starting to do its business. I left it for a few hours and came back to some Ether.\n\n## Writing a contract\nOnce you have some Ether, you can stop mining and start writing!\nParity has a built in contract development tool, which is pretty nice.
