To summarize:\n\nIdentity politics is the anti-scientific idea that \"the personal is political.\" It overemphasizes individual personal experience and separates the root or systemic causes of societal problems from material conditions and the wider class dynamics and economic relations, as it reduces or limits them to psychological phenomena. The most prominent if not overstated subjects are cultural and gender issues.\n\nOften, identity politics is fueled by emotionalism, prioritizing self-empowerment rather than class struggle and organizing effectively. And we see several self-styled Western \"progressives\" indulging in their marginalization, seeing their small group numbers as indicators of how \"special they are,\" while creating a straw man that \"asserts that the straight white male is at the apex of the privilege pyramid, responsible for the oppression of all other groups. His original sin condemns him to everlasting shame,\" as described in an RT op-ed. The writer does not deny \"that straight white men (as a group) have faced less obstacles than females, non-straight men or ethnic minorities,\" but he does shed light on a key point: a truly revolutionary movement should have a modicum of critical analysis centred on institutions, not individuals or other straw man fallacies. It should also think about problem-solving and not limit itself to personal narratives.\n\n The year 2016 was perhaps the year of 'peak IDpol', namely because of the U.S. presidential elections, with Hillary Clinton's campaign being notorious for using identity politics as a selling point. Anyone who dared to publicly criticize Clinton was automatically written off as \"sexist\", \"racist\", \"homophobic\", \"transphobic\", \"Nazi\", etc. and scolded for allegedly \"mansplaining\" or \"tone-policing\". They are then told, \"check your privilege,\" or that not supporting Clinton was \"anti-feminist\" and/or an expression of \"cis straight white male privilege\". It ultimately proved to be alienating and extremely off-putting for the ordinary working people and Donald Trump ended up winning. But, it didn't stop there. Rather than accepting the fact that Clinton legitimately lost, due to all fault of her own, and that her campaign was very unpopular with the wider general public, she and the Democrats would ramp up the anti-Russia propaganda and continue accusing Russia of \"interfering\" in the elections.\n\n Of course, the anti-Russia sentiment was already being built up prior to the 2016 U.S. Elections results, especially with regards to the U.S.-led proxy war on Syria, which many liberals and leftists alike cheered on. The seven-year (going on eight) long intervention began in 2011 and was kickstarted when the Obama administration was still in power, with Clinton as then-Secretary of State playing a major role in recruiting and helping to provide support for the Wahhabi terrorists who had the mission to overthrow the legitimate government of Bashar al Assad and to destabilize Syria; in the end, the war on Syria is to ultimately contain Russia (and Iran). Anyone who dared to publicly speak in defense of Syria and show an ounce of solidarity in the face of the imperialist onslaught was routinely subjected to character assassination and infantile name-calling, with words such as: \"tankie\", \"Nazbol\", \"Stalinist\", \"Russian bot\", \"Russian agent\", \"Nazi\", \"fascist\", \"authoritarian\", and so forth. While the Syrian government, Russia, and Iran are demonized and turned into cartoonish villains in Western and Gulf media, the U.S.-backed terrorists such as Jabhat al Nusra (Al Qaeda in Syria) and the Kurdish militias are hailed as \"revolutionaries\". Either way, we see an increasing trend in, essentially, loudly calling for a Third World War against Russia not only in liberal circles, but in so-called \"left\" circles as well -- voices whom most would expect to be anti-war. \n\nA warmongering, pro-imperialist, and irrationally anti-Russia 'left' -- a very confused \"progressive\" side indeed. It seems that the Western left is stuck in some kind of identity crisis today. But where is this all coming from? Look no further than Zbigniew Brzezinski.\n\nTo be clear, Brzezinski did not invent postmodernism or identity politics. However, the liberal Cold War ideologue did master the art of targeting intelligentsia and impressionable young people so that they could be used to carry out U.S. foreign policy, and mislead a significant number of people into supporting U.S.-led wars. Under his direction, the CIA invested money into programs that used university campus, anti-Soviet \"radical leftist activists\" and academics (as well as artists and writers) to help spread imperialist propaganda and give it a more \"hip\", \"humanitarian\", \"social justice\" appeal. Western, but especially American, academia has since continued to teach the post-modernist \"oppression theory\" or \"privilege theory\" etc. to students, which are all anti-Marxist and anti-scientific at to the core. More importantly, this post-modernist infiltration was meant to help divert any form of solidarity away from anti-imperialist struggles, and to foster virulent animosity towards the Soviet Union among students and anyone with a hint of 'leftist' leanings. Hence the phenomenon of identity politics that continues to plague the Western left today. Brzezinski’s “soft power” schemes are a highly effective in masking the brutality of U.S. imperialism, as well as concealing the exploitation of impoverished nations. Their purpose, as they claimed, was their dedication to \"the preservation of peace\" and to the defense of Western Europe against supposed military threats. Not only did the creation coincide with the heightened tensions of the Cold War and the political partitioning of Germany, but it also extended its invitation to West Germany to join the fold on May 9th, 1954 with the intent of re-arming it. This was a violation of the 1945 Potsdam agreement which posited that the partition of Germany was supposed to be temporary and that all of Germany was to be 'de-Nazified'; instead, we saw the development of West Germany into a Western puppet state. Imperialism, or the domination of finance capital, is that highest stage of capitalism in which this separation reaches vast proportions. The supremacy of finance capital over all other forms of capital means the predominance of the rentier and of the financial oligarchy; it means that a small number of financially “powerful” states stand out among all the rest. The extent to which this process is going on may be judged from the statistics on emissions, i.e., the issue of all kinds of securities.” \n—V.I. Lenin, 1916 (from Ch. III \"Finance Capital and the Financial Oligarchy\") \n\nA global rate of profit has been falling and, in order to survive and withstand the problems and challenges it faces, as well as to preserve the current system, capitalism has to adapt and create new policies. Hence why we see phenomena such as neoliberalism or cheaper means to produce goods being sought out. Capital must also expand beyond national borders; and thus, there is an internal logic to Empire-building and imperialist wars of aggression.\n\nIt has been 101 years since the Great October Revolution, but *Imperialism, Highest Stage of Capitalism*, one of Lenin's most important works, continues to be relevant today as we remember him for his contributions in supporting anti-colonial struggles. At the time of writing, Lenin realized that capitalism had changed since Marx’s time because the age of imperialism had begun, and that capitalism had entered into its globalist phase. He also saw competing national capitals between advanced industrial nations such as Britain and Germany which led up to World War I and II, the cycle of world wars he correctly predicted would happen. Although he did not foresee the advent of nuclear weapons and proxy wars -- or the emergence of the United States as the sole global superpower at the end of the Cold War (he was not a clairvoyant) -- his analysis on the sets of international capitals competing with one another for access to the world’s wealth, which places them in direct contradiction with each other, still holds true today. As per the very nature of capitalism, there cannot be any peace so long as that kind of struggle continues to exist; and by extension, a nuclear-free world is impossible under capitalism, especially in its globalist phase. He sums up these contradictions in Chapter 5:\n\n“Monopolist capitalist associations, cartels, syndicates and trusts first divided the home market among themselves and obtained more or less complete possession of the industry of their own country. But under capitalism the home market is inevitably bound up with the foreign market. Capitalism long ago created a world market. As the export of capital increased, and as the foreign and colonial connections and “spheres of influence” of the big monopolist associations expanded in all ways, things “naturally” gravitated towards an international agreement among these associations, and towards the formation of international cartels.”\n\nThe bourgeois state is thus no longer the mediator between capitalists since capitalists can now carry out their interests internationally under imperialism. And so, exploitation isn't limited to the relationship between classes within countries since it also exists between countries. Today, the world it is still divided into oppressed nations and oppressor nations, with the latter possessing \"colossal wealth and powerful armed forces,\" but with the United States as the leading global hegemon.\n\nNow of course, and as Lenin acknowledged, colonial domination and imperialism did exist well before 'late-stage' capitalism, as the Roman Empire practiced imperialism and it was built on slavery and colonial expansionism. However, he points out that there are key differences, namely: the existence of finance capital and \"the domination of monopolist associations of big employers\" in 'late-stage' capitalism; and monopolies are the most important features. Rome, on the other hand, was an agrarian and trade-dominated economy. In other words, and starting at the beginning of the 20th century, monopolies had acquired supremacy in the imperialist nations, which is what differentiates the American Empire and the British Empire from the Roman Empire.\n\nWe also learn from Lenin that national capitals, in the past, had to build up within their own markets and within their own borders -- until they had to expand beyond those because of the threat of collapsing within themselves, which drives imperialism. And imperialism commits the crimes that it does because capitalism must constantly expand in order to sustain itself.\n\nSo what can lessons can we take away from this important piece of work today, in this post-Cold War era, as we witness an ever-increasing drive to war against Russia by the U.S. and its NATO allies? Moreover, what should we be aiming for when we say we want peace? I'll leave you here with the words of Stephen Gowans from his book, *Patriots, Traitors, and Empires: The Story of Korea's Struggle for Freedom*, which draws heavily upon Lenin's work:\n\n\"...[T]oday, poor, post-colonial countries, whose economic development has been historically stifled, distorted, and yoked to the requirements of their former colonial masters, are not supposed to emulate the development practices of the United States.       "body": "Fidel Castro died on the evening of November 25th, 2016 at the age of 90. The revolutionary leader has many accomplishments behind his name, and will always be remembered for his role in leading Cuba towards independence and for his principled anti-imperialist stance. He did a lot to modernize and raise the standard of living in Cuba, which was a feudal backwater prior to the overthrow of the U.S. puppet government of Batista.  The Cuban Revolution brought many progressive reforms, including: public universal health care, women's emancipation, a mass literacy campaign, the redistribution and nationalization of land, guaranteed housing, and healing and overcoming ethnic divisions so that the Cuban people are united and stand together against the threat of U.S. imperialism.  And abroad, Castro showed international solidarity with anti-imperialist forces in the Global South, and in post-colonial nations with independent progressive nationalist governments who also stood up to the global dictatorship of the United States. These fellow post-colonial successes include(d): Syria, Libya under Muammar Gaddafi, the DPRK, Burkina Faso under Thomas Sankara, Nicaragua, and Venezuela.\n\nIn fact, and along with Hugo Chavez and Kim Jong Un, Castro was among the first to reach out to Bashar al Assad and Syria in solidarity when the so-called \"Syrian revolution\" started in 2011. While the Western left was cheering on the NATO-backed Wahhabi terrorists (otherwise known as \"moderate rebels\") and demonizing Assad, he continued to take a principled anti-imperialist stance. He also showed support for Gaddafi when Libya was under attack from NATO-backed terrorists -- something which was also unpopular with the Western left considering that they cheered on this NATO-Gulf manufactured \"revolution\" as well and joined the demonization campaign against Gaddafi. \n\nFidel was indeed a true internationalist. And for Cuba, 'anti-imperialist/anti-imperialism' was most certainly not a dirty word.
