It continues to thrive because many are afraid to report it for various reasons, so they think it is better to leave the job or avoid the perpetrator. Although women are the main victims, sometimes men experience sexual harassment on the job as well. All Woman asked several people to share their experiences of unwanted sexual advances on the job.\n\nJennifer B, 32:\n\nAt age 15 I worked in an office for the summer. My immediate supervisor was a family friend who was old enough to be my grandfather. He would occasionally touch my hand and brush against me. But for me, the worst part was how he looked at me. Every move I made I could feel him taking my clothes off with his eyes. I left the job and started volunteering elsewhere. My parents still don't know the real reason I left that job. I've avoided that man in every way ever since.\n\n \n\nTianna K, 27:\n\nA manager from another department stops by my desk every single day, telling me what he wants to do to me on my desk and other places.       "body": "Dear Editor,\n\nWhy is the age of consent 16? Can anyone with logical reasoning explain the logic behind giving children permission to be engaged in the life-changing experience called sexual intercourse at the tender age of 16?\n\nWas it a Parliament-debated determination? Was it talked about, opposed, and amended over and over like the zones of special operation legislation? Were the decision makers holders of master's degrees and doctorates in biology and psychology?\n\nIt seems as though coming up with the consent age was a raffle, because at age 16 neither mind nor body is ready for sex. Now, while sex is a three letter word and can be over in a minute, it can create or take your life. Hence it should be a mature adult decision.\n\nWe confuse our children, by permitting them to engage in an adult activity and still be a child. Why was there a disparity between the age of consent and when one becomes an adult in the first place?\n\nRaising the age of consent cannot stop children from having sex, but wearing a seatbelt will not stop you from dying; however, it is an offence to not wear it. It is an offence for a 16-year-old child to have sex with a 15-year-old child, but the law permits for a 60-year-old adult to have sex with a 16-year-old child — how come?\n\nA proprietor should not sell alcohol or cigarette to minors; parental consent is needed for children to get a tax registration number or a visa. Minors are not given driver's licences, doctors need adults' consent/permission to operate on children, children cannot enrol themselves into school, nor can they get married without parent/guardian giving consent, parental consent is even needed to even watch television and a host of other prohibitions. Now with that said, how wise is it that the State should endow a child with the responsibility of making such an important life-changing decision to become parents.\n\n\nThis forces children into adulthood and permits adult perverts to feast on the immature ignorance of children with permission and endorsement by the State. Let us correct it.\n\nGatekeepers, children must be allowed to be children before they are adults, hence an Act specially provides for their needs.\n\n \n\nHezekan Bolton\n\[email protected]",

      "body": "![AR-309129964.jpg&maxh=332&maxw=504.jpeg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmdevkgwgCwrGVjuZzrU97X3Jm8D7JiSrfG2kHrUkkzU2s/AR-309129964.jpg%26maxh%3D332%26maxw%3D504.jpeg)\n\nThe devastation by Hurricane Irma of Barbuda, the sister island of Antigua, and the potential to rebuild it into a modern tourist city, proves once again that out of adversity can come opportunity.\n\nIrma, on the 22nd anniversary of another dreadful storm, category 4 Hurricane Luis in September 1995, rendered Barbuda virtually inhabitable, forcing the evacuation of its entire population of 1,800 people to Antigua.\n\nIt was encouraging to hear that Hollywood legend, actor Mr Robert De Niro has pledged to help rebuild Barbuda, partly out of self-interest in that he and a partner, billionaire Mr James Packer were developing the former K Club luxury resort, now renamed Paradise Found Nobu Resort, and partly out of empathy with the people of the island which he described as “barely habitable”.\n\nThe destruction of the island has provided the Government of Prime Minister Gaston Browne an unprecedented opportunity to rebuild Barbuda into a modern city themed around tourism, which is already its main revenue earner. In other words, Barbuda 2.0.\n\nIt's not often that a country gets such a glorious chance to build a well planned city, with stronger homes and supporting amenities, infrastructure that can withstand hurricane force winds of the likes of Irma and Luis, better roads and communication facilities, without the challenges posed by having a population on spot.\n\nThe Government has estimated that it will cost somewhere between $100 million and $350 million to rebuild the island. Mr Browne's Administration should approach this renewal with the big picture in mind and not just replicate what was there before.\n\nEvery opportunity should be taken to exploit the star power of Mr De Niro to raise the funds which will be critical to achieving what could be the biggest construction project in recent times in Antigua-Barbuda.\n\nMr Browne will, of course, need to re-image himself as a leader who welcomes investment, particularly in the hospitality industry, but times like these also bring the opportunity for cerebral leadership.\n\nOne of the limitations to greater development of the tourist industry in Barbuda has been the small number of accommodations. Luxury resorts could be the centrepiece of the new city.\n\nThe new Barbuda would build on current advantages such as its Frigate bird sanctuary; its beautiful pink and white sand beaches; its abundance of shipwrecks and wonderful reefs; and its almost virginal allure supported by a tropical marine climate — a popular draw for tourists seeking to escape the icy chill of the northern climes.\n\nIf Old San Juan, Puerto Rico can promote as a tourist attraction, a street that was merely walked on by a Spanish princess, imagine Barbuda re-enacting the fabled slave-breeding centre of the immediate post-emancipation period.\n\nBarbuda could yet be Mr Gaston Browne's lasting legacy.",

Chung became Brown's foster parent after his father was deported from the United Kingdom.\n\n“She still speak to me up to this day. It was really her who gave me the moral to think about other people and not just myself. She thought me how to have respect for other people [and] don't be selfish… and that is why when I saw him in the gully the first thing was to help him, nothing else,” the 24-year-old Brown told the Jamaica Observer yesterday after he was offered a job by Lasco in their promotions department.\n\nWhen the Observer visited First Street in Trench Town after 2:00 pm yesterday, motor vehicles lined the street in the vicinity of Trench Town Culture Yard as residents, representatives from Lasco representatives, telecommunications firm FLOW, and the media awaited Brown's arrival.\n\nAn hour later Brown arrived along with his father Stanford, pastor for a community church. I was an “overstayer” (illegal resident) and was not allowed to work, and I was not allowed to claim benefits,” Brown said.\n\nAs if his father's deportation was not enough, Brown said his mother was killed in Spanish Town, St Catherine, six years ago.\n\nBrown, who is the father of a four-year-old boy, said that after he, too, was deported it was not difficult for him to adjust to a “third world” country after living in London for more than 17 years.\n\n“I am easily adaptable; I can adapt to anything. I don't stress about nothing. If I have to live that way, I will live that way,” Brown said, adding that everything happens for a reason.\n\nThe Observer was told that earlier yesterday the Trench Town hero was taken to the Ministry of National Security and the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture, and Fisheries where he was congratulated and offered assistance. Hero!” echoed throughout the historic Trench Town community in Kingston yesterday as residents hailed 24-year-old Tremayne Brown for rescuing a 12-year-old boy from drowning in raging flood waters on Friday.\n\nYoung Renaldo Reynolds said he was on his way home from Jones Town Primary School during heavy rain when he was encouraged by a group of older boys in the vicinity of Seventh Street to jump into a gully on Collie Smith Drive.\n\n“I put one foot in the water. When I was coming out my hand slipped and I started to wash away,” Renaldo told the Jamaica Observer yesterday.\n\nAccording to Renaldo, otherwise known as Didda, residents saw what was taking place and started screaming for help. Within seconds Brown jumped into the gully in an effort to save the boy who he had never met before, although their houses are metres apart.\n\nDespite the danger, Renaldo told the Observer that the only thing on his mind during the ordeal was that he would receive a beating from his mother who, he said, had warned him on numerous occasions about playing in the gully.\n\nHowever, the boy started fearing for his life when Brown complained about feeling tired.\n\nWhen the reality that they might not make it out of the angry waters alive hit Renaldo, it spurred him to call upon the power of prayer, even though he admitted yesterday that he had not attended church since January.\n\nSponsored Links\nFour golden ducks in an inningsESPN Cricinfo\nUnderstanding health savings accountsUSA Today\n\n“God, I want you to guide us, protect us, and take us out of this water,” Renaldo said he prayed, adding that, shortly after, Brown held on to the branch of a tree, preventing them from being washed further down the gully.\n\nThey were eventually helped from the gully and taken to Kingston Public Hospital where they were treated for cuts and bruises. Renaldo was admitted overnight, while Brown was released.\n\nAs residents continued to praise Brown yesterday, he related the frightful experience while seated in a chair on First Street.\n\nBrown, an obviously humble man, said he was on a worksite at Boys' Town Community Centre when he heard the screams for help. Without thinking twice he jumped into the gully to save the boy.\n\nBrown said when the water carried them to the vicinity of May Pen Cemetery he managed to hold on to a tree branch. But it eventually broke.\n\nDespite thoughts of giving up floating in his head, the slim-built Brown, who said he was deported to Jamaica from the United Kingdom six months ago, related that he quickly held on to another branch.\n\n“When the first branch broke all my energy was done, and I thought this could be it. As we got to another branch the little boy started praying and I found strength. I don't know how. And then I prayed and two other boys came to help us,” Brown said.\n\nWhen the Observer visited Renaldo's home, the sound of George Nooks' Ride Out Your Storm blasted from inside.\n\nRenaldo's mother, Kereen Duggon, who saw her son on Saturday for the first time after the ordeal, said they had made plans to purchase books on Friday but she went alone when Renaldo did not show up.\n\n“When mi buy the book dem and a come up I was in a taxi when I saw one big crowd. So mi say to miself, 'a coulda wah dis now',” Duggon said, adding that she became concerned on seeing her grandson's mother in the crowd.\n\n“When I came out of the taxi mi say, 'What happen?' A little boy said, 'Didda dead. Didda gone inna the gully.' Mi just start bawl and try go in the gully. Some people hold on to mi, and mi no remember nothing more,” Duggon said, explaining that she later learnt that she had passed out.\n\nThe mother of five said when she eventually saw Renaldo the following day she had no thought of beating him.\n\n“When I saw him mi couldn't even say nothing to him, mi just a look. I was shocked. I couldn't even believe that he was alive. Everybody a say mi a go beat him 'cause dem a say him rude, but I couldn't do that. Mi glad so till,” Duggon explained.\n\nWithin minutes of learning how her son survived, she went to Brown's home to say thanks.\n\n“A just tears; mi just hug him up and a cry to how mi love him, to how mi rate him. Is like a God send him as an angel,” Duggon said.\n\nDespite her joy, Duggon was apparently disappointed that Renaldo failed to heed her warning, as one of her older sons had a similar ordeal in the same gully.\n\n“Mi tell him say a four pickney dead in the same gully already,” the mother said, noting that their bodies were never found.\n\nDuggon admitted that while Renaldo is “rude”, he is helpful and she could not imagine life without him.\n\nMeanwhile, Brown's father, Stanford, said he was pleased that his son was able to save a life.\n\n“A lot of people ran from the water. A lot of guys ran, but he made up his mind that he was going into the water, and he saved him by the mercy of God.       "body": "TODAY marks the 98th anniversary of the birth of renowned folklorist Louise Bennett-Coverley, better known as Miss Lou. It also marks the closing date of a petition to have her named an official National Icon.\n\nUp to yesterday, the signatures for the petition was nowhere near the 15,000 required for it to be considered for discussion by the Office of the Prime Minister, which organised the portal on its Jamaica House website. The petition attracted 1,477 signatures or just shy of 10 per cent of the target.\n\nThe petition, created by public commentator and newspaper columnist Kevin O'Brien Chang on May 12, calls for a new category of national honours be created for Miss Lou, and that she should be made our first official National Icon, noting that other widely acclaimed individuals like Bob Marley and Usain Bolt could be added in future years.\n\nIt further states that Miss Lou — who is know for her work as a poet, actress, writer, and broadcaster — insisted on the inherent worth of Jamaican expression, established respect in the people for their language and tradition, and helped bring about emancipation from mental and linguistic slavery.\n\nVeteran actress and broadcaster Fae Ellington weighed in on the petition's failure to attract the required number of signatures.\n\nFor Ellington, a number of factors contributed to the lack of support.\n\n“When I first got the notification about the petition, I decided to vote. I went to the site and voted... for days I did not get the confirmation e-mail. So I called the Office of the Prime Minister and the JIS (Jamaica Information Service), who were managing the portal. In addition, she said there are individuals rooting for her to be named a National Hero and by signing this petition they would be supporting a lesser rank and status for the popular folklorist.\n\nMiss Lou died on July 27, 2006 at the Scarborough Grace Hospital, after collapsing at her home in Canada where lived for the last decade of her life.
