| body | It seems to be a commonly held belief that our genetic makeup has an almost unshakable hold over the destiny of our health, and that any other interventions or changes we make in life are merely superficial or simply mask the problem. However, in my experience of recovering from a chronic illness, labeled as “incurable” by conventional medicine, I have come to realise that we are much more in control of our own destiny than the mainstream would have us believe. My illness was Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, which falls under the umbrella of an “autoimmune disorder” which are then consequently explained by allopathic medicine as genetically determined and currently unrecoverable from. I have since discovered however that this, so confidently proclaimed statement from the medical community doesn’t appear to be wholly true, certainly not in my case at least and also in many hundreds of people I have met and discovered who have recovered from many other “incurable” conditions. The hype about genes and their possible deterministic role in illness has been around for a long time, but apart from a few rare conditions that people are born with, has not proven to be such a fruitful vein of research in terms of explaining why illnesses occur and thus finding ways to treat them. The reason for this I feel, is that for the vast majority of illnesses, the genetic component is not deterministic, but simply sets the threshold for how far you can push your body in terms of stress (physical, chemical, mental, emotional) before that particular part of your body is going to start to malfunction in some way. If genes did determine illness, then twins (who are genetically identical) would develop the same illnesses at the same time in life and die at the same time, but this isn’t what we see; twins can develop the same illness at different times in life and develop different illnesses altogether, many of which are labelled as “genetic” by conventional medicine. This all became clear to me as I was recovering from my own illness. The more changes I began to make in my life, in terms of reducing physical, chemical, nutritional, and emotional stress correlated with the improvement of my symptoms and return of my energy. Then if I had a slip, and allowed a little too much stress back into my life, the symptoms would once again worsen. The pattern seemed to be obvious. The important point here is, that genetics are, I’m sure playing a role, but I have had the same genes all of my life. So why did the illness not arise until I was 15 years old? Well, from what I learned in my recovery, it took me 15 years to push my body to the point that the genetic weakness that I had had all of my life was exposed to trigger the symptoms of the illness referred to as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I found this discovery quite empowering, as it clearly demonstrated to me that I am not at the mercy of the genetic hand I was dealt at birth, but have the power within myself to reverse any illness or ailment that may develop, by making different choices in life. In other words, it wasn’t the genes that made me ill, but the accumulation of all of the stress resulting choices I had made in my life up until that point. I feel that this is the reason why we are seeing increasing numbers of people recovering from all manner of chronic conditions on Youtube and in Internet testimonies. People are making changes to their lives, and if they make enough changes and are able to sustain them, then they are reducing the “stress load” on their body back below what it was before their illness arose, so the body is simply able to to heal itself, because there are no blocks to it doing so. The body knows exactly how to heal itself, it’s just we who have to “get out of the way” and allow it the time and resources to do so. This gives not only hope, but the very real opportunity for millions of people with chronic conditions to realize that they too have the power to change their own destiny, if they can find the courage and open-mindedness not to blindly believe what they hear from western medicine. Best Wishes Jack |

| author | jackstokes |
| body | Having suffered from a chronic illness (chronic fatigue syndrome) for 15 years I am well aware of the restriction and emotional turmoil it can wreak on life, however in the process of recovering I found that there were numerous factors that were within my control, and were significantly contributing to my ill health. Therefore, the learning and greater perspective I gained from “correcting” these factors became an enormously valuable experience for me. So from initially being a “life destroying” occurrence, my illness in fact guided me to an expansion of understanding of myself and health and all sorts of other factors, that I don’t think I necessarily would have got, if I had never become ill in the first place. I learned to question what is generally accepted by most people, such as the conventional medical view on chronic illness. Most people in my situation are told that they have a chronic illness, for which there is no cure and their only hope is to manage their symptoms as best they can for the rest of their life, usually in the form of drugs. I was slightly lucky in this respect, in that there are no real drugs or other treatment options offered for my illness, so I was left with the option to either accept the diagnoses I was given and resign myself to a life of limitation, or to look by myself for any other possible ways in which I could help myself. I soon found stories and testaments from many hundreds of people who had not only recovered from my illness, but all manner of other chronic problems, from autoimmune to degenerative and everything in between. No two stories were exactly the same, but I noticed general veins running through most of them, which seemed to hint at at least some degree of truth to what these people were saying had helped them recover from their particular ailment. So I began experimenting with what seemed to be the most popular of these or what most appealed to me and made rational sense. It certainly wasn’t easy, and I certainly didn’t get any sort of immediate improvement, but I saw that some things did help and others did not or even sometimes made me feel worse. So I kept doing the things that helped and stopped the things that didn’t, whilst all the time researching and looking for other ways in which I may be able to make changes. I would say that the most important thing I learned was that my decline in health was mainly due to the way I was living my life, in terms of the degree of physical, mental, emotional and nutritional stress I was placing on myself. As soon as I began to address enough of these areas, and tip the balance enough, then my health began to improve and return to what it once was. Its natural when finding yourself with a chronic illness to want to look for the magic bullet treatment, but I found this to be a fruitless pursuit on my journey. I found that it is more a case of stopping the unhelpful things that we are doing and thinking and feeling, more than it is that we have to find some special treatment out there that is going to “fix” us. I suppose the main point I want to get across here, is that if you are suffering with a chronic illness, then there is always hope that you can change things for the better. Chiefly because there isn’t one chronic illness that conventional medicine knows absolutely everything about, in terms of why it occurs and whether it is recoverable. So If they don’t know, then there is always at least a possibility that there is a way out of your problem. And when you do look, there are people who have recovered from pretty much every illness ever recorded. I think the reason why we don’t see that many, is because it is so easy to completely accept the word of a doctor as gospel and to therefore discount any plausibility that you could actually heal your own body on your own, and this is what most people with a chronic illness do. Living with a chronic illness can be a dark and lonely place, but it really doesn’t have to be. In my experience, you have way more influence over your own destiny than I ever thought possible, previous to learning what I have. The answers are out there, and somebody has felt just as ill as you and recovered back to full health, and so can you. Best Wishes Jack |

"body": "Having suffered from a chronic illness (chronic fatigue syndrome) for 15 years I am well aware of the restriction and emotional turmoil it can wreak on life, however in the process of recovering I found that there were numerous factors that were within my control, and were significantly contributing to my ill health. Therefore, the learning and greater perspective I gained from “correcting” these factors became an enormously valuable experience for me.\n\nSo from initially being a “life destroying” occurrence, my illness in fact guided me to an expansion of understanding of myself and health and all sorts of other factors, that I don’t think I necessarily would have got, if I had never become ill in the first place.\n\n\n\nI learned to question what is generally accepted by most people, such as the conventional medical view on chronic illness. Most people in my situation are told that they have a chronic illness, for which there is no cure and their only hope is to manage their symptoms as best they can for the rest of their life, usually in the form of drugs.\n\nI was slightly lucky in this respect, in that there are no real drugs or other treatment options offered for my illness, so I was left with the option to either accept the diagnoses I was given and resign myself to a life of limitation, or to look by myself for any other possible ways in which I could help myself.\n\nI soon found stories and testaments from many hundreds of people who had not only recovered from my illness, but all manner of other chronic problems, from autoimmune to degenerative and everything in between.\n\nNo two stories were exactly the same, but I noticed general veins running through most of them, which seemed to hint at at least some degree of truth to what these people were saying had helped them recover from their particular ailment.\nSo I began experimenting with what seemed to be the most popular of these or what most appealed to me and made rational sense.\n\nIt certainly wasn’t easy, and I certainly didn’t get any sort of immediate improvement, but I saw that some things did help and others did not or even sometimes made me feel worse. So I kept doing the things that helped and stopped the things that didn’t, whilst all the time researching and looking for other ways in which I may be able to make changes.\n\nI would say that the most important thing I learned was that my decline in health was mainly due to the way I was living my life, in terms of the degree of physical, mental, emotional and nutritional stress I was placing on myself. As soon as I began to address enough of these areas, and tip the balance enough, then my health began to improve and return to what it once was.\n\nIts natural when finding yourself with a chronic illness to want to look for the magic bullet treatment, but I found this to be a fruitless pursuit on my journey. I found that it is more a case of stopping the unhelpful things that we are doing and thinking and feeling, more than it is that we have to find some special treatment out there that is going to “fix” us.\n\nI suppose the main point I want to get across here, is that if you are suffering with a chronic illness, then there is always hope that you can change things for the better. Chiefly because there isn’t one chronic illness that conventional medicine knows absolutely everything about, in terms of why it occurs and whether it is recoverable. So If they don’t know, then there is always at least a possibility that there is a way out of your problem. And when you do look, there are people who have recovered from pretty much every illness ever recorded.\n\nI think the reason why we don’t see that many, is because it is so easy to completely accept the word of a doctor as gospel and to therefore discount any plausibility that you could actually heal your own body on your own, and this is what most people with a chronic illness do.\n\nLiving with a chronic illness can be a dark and lonely place, but it really doesn’t have to be. In my experience, you have way more influence over your own destiny than I ever thought possible, previous to learning what I have.\n\nThe answers are out there, and somebody has felt just as ill as you and recovered back to full health, and so can you.\n\nBest Wishes\n\nJack",

| body | Meditation and its possible benefits seem to have been gaining more and more attention in recent years. From once being a purely eastern religious/spiritual practice, it made its way into western alternative medicine and has now been quite extensively researched by western scientists and is being prescribed to patients for stress related conditions. I explored meditation whilst struggling with my own health problems, and eventually found it to be extremely beneficial. I say eventually, as there are many, many different interpretations and ways of using meditation, and it took me a while to really understand what it actually is, and how practicing it could help me in my life. So I will tell you now, what I understand meditation to be and how it can help you in all manner of different areas of your life. It took me so long to get any benefit from meditation, as I didn’t really understand the purpose, or results that I was aiming for. Also the preconceptions of seeing Buddhists sat cross-legged in monasteries for hours on end was a difficult image to shake. I became stuck with the “goal” of completely emptying my mind of thoughts, and trying to “achieve” this. When in reality, meditation is simply the practice of becoming more aware of yourself. It is a tool, to help you see, at a conscious level the thoughts that go through your mind and the emotions you feel in your body. A lot of our stress in life is caused by getting stuck in negative thought patterns, that lead to negative emotions, that lead to yet more thoughts, and so on. This can start at vicious cycle that can perpetuate for a very long time, if we do nothing to change it. So this is where mediation can be so helpful. Stress can be so hard to relieve simply because we are not consciously aware of ourselves at the mental and emotional level and how we are getting stuck in these stress cycles. Taking time to stop and watch your thoughts and feel your emotions and see how one leads to another is a great first step in beginning to rectify the stress in our lives. There are many different forms and techniques that can be applied to meditation, but the one I find most helpful is simply becoming aware of yourself, and watching what goes through your mind and body. Sort of like as if you were watching somebody else. After practicing this for a while, you may begin to see that you are in fact able to separate yourself from your thoughts and emotions at some level. You can become the awareness that has the ability to watch your thoughts and emotions, without allowing them to “control” you as they had done previously. It is this space and awareness that becomes so valuable in being able to change the stressful reactions we are having in life, as once we begin not reacting to negative thoughts and emotions that we become aware of, they begin to fade away. Just simply watching and allowing our negative thoughts and emotions, is enough to start to allow them pass, and not bother us anymore. Then, once you are able to do this successfully in a quiet place on your own, you can begin to use the same technique in your daily life. So that you are in a sort of constant self-aware state, where you can begin to “catch” yourself in negative thoughts/emotions that are causing you stress and let them pass. The more you practice this, the less those thoughts and emotions will come back in the same situation next time round, until they fade away completely. This technique has been invaluable for me in relieving all sorts of stresses from my life and I’m confident it can do the same for you too. Best Wishes Jack |

| body | If you are interested in personal or spiritual growth, then I’m sure you are familiar with **self-love** as a concept. I hear a lot of spiritual teachers and Youtubers talking about how much learning to love themselves has helped them on their journey, but I always felt that the term *self-love* never really resonated with me, as it felt a bit too self-absorbed or even arrogant. I always associated somebody loving themselves with the kind of people who are very conscious of themselves and their image and have big egos, which I feel didn’t really give the impression that the people advocating self-love were aiming for. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel that it’s more helpful to view self-love in terms of simply being able to accept yourself for who you are right now, rather than having to “love” yourself. I don’t think any of us are perfect, so there are bound to be things we don’t like about ourselves, that we would like to change; so “loving” that part of ourselves is probably not as helpful as merely being able to accept it. *“I am currently jealous in this certain situation”* for example; and I don’t like it and I certainly don’t love it, but I am willing to accept it, as I understand that in order to change something about myself, I first have to accept that it is there and not resist or push it away. This is why self-love is so popular I feel, as what it is really advocating is that it is ok for people to not be perfect, and to accept the less helpful aspects of their personality and behaviour. Guilt seems to be a big block to growth for many, so the whole “self-love” movement has been very beneficial in helping people begin to accept themselves for who they are right now and freeing up the emotional space inside of themselves to begin to change who they are. I just think the term itself, “self-love” confuses and may alienate a lot of people, especially the more logically or scientifically-minded out there, like me, who are keen on self-exploration and growth, but can find a lot of the content out there on this subject a little “new age” or without a logical backbone to it. I don’t have any problems at all with the more new age type teachers at all, as they help a lot of people including myself, I just feel that there is a growing need right now for a slightly different sort of spiritual teacher, more in the vein I have been alluding to, who can explain the hows and whys a bit more conclusively than a lot of other teachers do at the moment. That’s what I hope to do with this blog and my other work, as I have felt that this kind of logical, fact-based approach coupled with the traditional emotional, intuitive side of spiritual growth is the best way for me to learn and change myself in a positive way. So self-love is fine if that makes sense to you and you can use it to produce positive change in your life, but accepting yourself may also be a helpful way of seeing this point for the more left-brained amongst you. So I invite you to look at your own life and ask yourself whether there are some aspects of yourself that you are resisting or “not accepting”, and if this is stopping you from being able to move past the issue. Best Wishes Jack |

| body | I’m sure most of you are aware of the phenomenon known as the Placebo Effect which has been a subject of some note in the medical world in recent times. To briefly summarize, the most classic example of the effect often given, is when a group of patients with the same medical condition, are split into 2 groups, with one group being given a real drug with active ingredients designed to help relieve the illness they are suffering from, whilst the other group is given a pill and told that it **is** a real drug, but it actually contains no active ingredients (the Placebo). As well as the patients being given the real drug, some patients from the group given the Placebo report that they felt better, even though they were given a pill containing no illness-targeting ingredients. This understandably baffled a lot of scientists, and has continued to do so ever since it was first discovered, as it appeared that a person’s beliefs and expectations were having a very real effect on their **physical** health. The belief alone, generated from a doctor telling somebody that “this pill will help you”, actually seemed to be having a measurable effect. I can’t help feeling however, that we have not even begun to take any steps towards using this amazing discovery to our advantage. The implications of what the Placebo Effect is telling us, don’t seem to have hit home to us, or the people studying it. One thing scientists have begun to discover, is that stress hormones seem to play a role in the process. In an experiment involving placebos, the people who reported improvement in symptoms from the placebo, had measurably decreased levels of stress hormones running around their bodies in comparison to before the treatment. It was therefore deduced that the decrease in stress hormones and consequent increase in the more “happy” hormones like dopamine and serotonin, enabled the body to go about fixing the illness itself, which is why the people felt better. And this is where I feel that we are not taking full advantage of what the Placebo Effect is telling us. The results of this experiment above clearly demonstrate that the level of stress hormones in our body, can have a profound effect on the appearance and disappearance of very physical symptoms and ailments. The hurdle that the mainstream medical community seems yet to get over, is that it is not just the stress and anxiety that is relieved by somebody being told that a placebo pill will cure their problem, but that all of the rest of the stress and anxiety somebody feels on an everyday basis, whether around work or family or relationships or **anything** will all have just as much of an effect on the body and how well it works, as the stress caused by worrying about a particular illness. It’s as though they see the the worry relieved about an illness as some way separate from somebody’s feeling on other issues, failing to spot, that it is not the particular issue that somebody is stressed about that is the point, but simply the stress itself. The source of the stress is irrelevant. I noticed this very profoundly in myself, in the process of recovering from a chronic illness (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome). I was ill for many years and tried all sorts of different “physical” treatments, like diet changes, exercise regimens, massage and lots of other “alternative” treatments, but it was not until I began to address the stress in my life that I ever got any lasting and permanent improvement in my physical symptoms. The correlation between the two was undeniable for me; the more relaxed and “in control” I felt of my mind and emotions, the more energy I got and less symptoms I began to feel. The implications for this concept, I believe could be enormous. The general opinion and mindset today is that we are, in essence, at the mercy of our genes. Whatever genetic hand we were dealt at birth will determine what illnesses we develop, and when we will get them. But what the Placebo Effect is demonstrating to us, is that our genes are only a sort of threshold for how far we can push our bodies in terms of physical, mental and emotional stress, before an illness develops. If we go over our “threshold” an illness may develop, but if we then re-adjust the stress levels in our life, like in the placebo example, a physical illness can be reversed, and it is the body that does this itself. It just needs the right balance of hormones and a little time and the possibilities of what could be cured are quite tantalizing. So if you are intrigued by what I have said, I invite you to read a little deeper into the Placebo Effect and look at your own life and ask yourself if stress could be contributing to any illness or ailment you may be suffering from. It has certainly changed my life in an unbelievable way and could well do the same for you too. Best Wishes Jack |

"body": "I’m sure most of you are aware of the phenomenon known as the Placebo Effect which has been a subject of some note in the medical world in recent times. As well as the patients being given the real drug, some patients from the group given the Placebo report that they felt better, even though they were given a pill containing no illness-targeting ingredients.\n\nThis understandably baffled a lot of scientists, and has continued to do so ever since it was first discovered, as it appeared that a person’s beliefs and expectations were having a very real effect on their **physical** health. The belief alone, generated from a doctor telling somebody that “this pill will help you”, actually seemed to be having a measurable effect.\n\nI can’t help feeling however, that we have not even begun to take any steps towards using this amazing discovery to our advantage. The implications of what the Placebo Effect is telling us, don’t seem to have hit home to us, or the people studying it.\n\nOne thing scientists have begun to discover, is that stress hormones seem to play a role in the process.
