      "body": "There are basically three types of taxi drivers in Kathmandu – the silent type, the chatty type, and the ‘let me get as much money as possible from you’ type.  That’s not to say the silent and chatty types are not trying to increase their earnings.  In fact the chatty type may get a tip just because he is so engaging while stuck in a jam. On other days I’m less inclined to answer the standard questions about my place of origin, marriage status and place of work.  Nor I am really wanting to take the guy to my country to drive the car that he believes I have there. On the days when I am quite happy to reply to the questions, the answers may vary slightly depending on the (perceived) character of the driver.  But I always have a (fictional) husband waiting at home and two children (one of each) either here, or at university in Britain or off travelling the world. Some days I work for an NGO, other days I am a trainer, or a housewife.  Meantime the driver who is trying to get more money out of me is out of luck!  Having lived here before many of the drivers were old enough to reach the pedals, I know the approximate (and sometimes the exact) cost from A to B.  And I know the shortcuts.  But give credit where credit is due, I have never had a Kathmandu taxi driver try to take me the long way round in order to increase the amount on the meter.\n\nI remember a time when it was really hard to get a taxi, because there just wasn’t the same number on the road.  And those that were available were horrible old cars that had no suspension and were built for Chinese or Indian midgets. You know the ones – those that were eventually sent off to do the airport run.  Tall tourists with huge backpacks or suitcases squeezing into those oddly narrow vehicles.  What an introduction to the country! Thankfully the taxis on offer at the airport are now much more comfortable and the pre-paid ticket takes the strain out of communication for arriving tourists. Meantime, while we are reminiscing, do you remember auto-rickshaws?  Those yellow and black ones. Nostalgia! In fact I was quite upset when auto-rickshaws were removed from the streets of Kathmandu because those were so much cheaper than taxis – it cost me Rs11 to ride from my apartment to Lazimpat (a 15 minute walk).  And they were quite fun to ride in as they zipped through the traffic and down small roads which should really be gullies.  It made you feel like you really were in a different place! On the other hand, the brand new cabs have heaters for those cold nights. Which can, if you shut your eyes, make you feel like you are indeed in a different time and place.\n\nFinally, the silent type.  While it’s nice after a hard day to drive in silence (maybe some Bollywood on the radio), those silent types can be a little creepy.  They don’t respond to a cheery “Namaste”, seem unimpressed by your thorough knowledge of the road or your limited Nepali language skills.  Hopefully they are just concentrating on the road, and not burdened by a personal problem which might make them less than reliable drivers.  Or, even worse, fingers crossed they are not some psycho madman.  The latter thought only seems to occur when it’s late at night and seems to grow along with the silence.   I know Nepali friends who take down the number of the cab to text home before getting in.  But, realistically, who am I going to text?  I never get those silent types to drive me right up to my door but ask them to stop a bit down the road.  The local dogs then offer their friendly faces and escort me home.  In the morning of course it all seems so silly - until the next silent taxi driver.",

      "body": "Most of us don't have to worry about getting out of our own country when going on holiday.  Unless you are Nepali!\n\nMany Nepalis go overseas to work so there is the concern that they have been cheated by some agency, or that their visas are fake, or that they will not return to the country (thus contributing to the overall low opinion some other governments  have of Nepal) or, if they are women, that they are being trafficked.  These are genuine concerns. And these migrant workers get extra scrutiny at the exit immigration point. \n\n![_MG_5064.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmYNC1wSLNtm1xVXZgWPhi42raQy3TrrJkN99mXubk64eV/_MG_5064.jpg)\n\nHowever, sometimes we wonder if the immigration officials are jealous of those who are going oversea for holidays. And thus, make it difficult for genuine travellers, holiday makers and business people also.\n\nSo here are few tips on how to pass the Nepal Immigration if you are Nepali!!\n\n\n•\tMake sure you have a genuine visa.  Or that the place you are going does not require a visa (ie Singapore).  This applies even if you are in transit.  \n\n•\tHave a return ticket.  Even if you do not intent coming back to Nepal for a long time, have a ticket that you can cancel or change later.\n\n•\tHave hotel reservations.  Make bookings for the first few days.  If you are not sure where you are going to be staying, make a booking through ie booking.com that can be cancelled at no charge, or where payment is make direct to the hotel on arrival and not online.\n\n•\tMake sure you have at least US$1,000 stamped in your passport. The Nepal Immigration will then feel you have enough money for your stay and you are a serious traveller. \n\n\n•\tIf you are under 18 (or look it) the Nepal Immigration might call your parents.  So make sure they know where you are going and are expecting a call.  \n\n•\tIf you are a woman, take as much evidence of your trip (hotel bookings, letter of invitation etc).  If you look young, even if you are not, we suggest taking your Citizenship as well as your passport.  It has been known for the Nepal Immigration to disbelieve the age on the passport. Here in Nepal you will not be able to change your cash rupees for the cash dollars you will need overseas. What you will get is:-\n\n*A dollar debit card*.  Like a local debit card, you will be able to withdraw money from an ATM when in another country.  ATMs will give you money in the local currency or, for example in Cambodia, US dollars. The downside of this card is that you cannot check the amount is correct while you are still in Nepal – you have to trust the bank did indeed put the correct amount onto your card.  \n\nAnd you *cannot* have a friend or family member top it up from Nepal.  If you need more money to spend while travelling, you yourself would have to return to Nepal and go through the whole processes of obtaining a dollar card again. Not very convenient! \n\n*Cash*.  You can obtain cash (US dollars, Euros, Pounds Sterling) from the bank.  The downside is there is frequency a shortage of foreign currency in the country and you may not be able to get as much as you require.\n\n*Credit card*.       "body": "Coming soon... information on ways to access visas for that hard to use passport  from Nepal.  Many Nepalis find it very hard to travel overseas because their passport has a low rating - mainly because the country is also rated as 'under developed'.  Another factor is that many people who are successful in getting visa and going overseas then do not return to Nepal.  They use their tourist or study visa to enter another country then apply for refuge status or simply disappear.  This has created hardship for those who really do want go on holiday or study abroad with every intention of returned.  Soon I will be writing a blog on how Nepalis can go about getting visas more easily.  I will also share this here.       "body": "You might be planning to fly into  Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, Nepal soon.   Be relieved to know that finally, December of 2017, officially 1 February 2018, it has a Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar (MSSR) system.  This enables the control tower to see on radar approaching plans for a radius of 250 miles.  Previously, the old terminal radar could only see for a radius of 50 miles.  And the, now obsolete, radar was only installed 20 years ago after two major crashes took place in the same year.  \n\nOn 31st July 1992, Thai Airways flight 311 from Bangkok crashed on its approach to Kathmandu killing all 113 people on board.  \n\nBelow is an animation of the fatal crash uploaded on YouTube by Aviation World/ National Geographics.\n\nhttps://youtu.be/HvhCZDG7c4g\n\nOne of the probable causes was sighted by the investigators as \"ineffective radio communication between the area-control centre controller and the flight crew which allowed the aircraft to continue in the wrong direction.\"\n\nOnly 2 months later on the  28th September 1992, Pakistan Airlines Flight PK268 from Karachi International Airport crashed 18km south of the city, at an altitude of 2,225 metres on its approach to Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport.  There were 167 onboard, including 12 crew.  No one survived.\n\n![20180101_110120.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmcLunUQyWbaqm1Z2fobHcH8yYSXMGYbzHsTuTVkQEzgrg/20180101_110120.jpg)\n\nThe exact cause of that crash is not know as there is no record of the crew’s conversation on the flight deck but it was suggested that evidence indicated the prime cause of the accident was that “one or both pilots consistently failed to follow the approach procedure and inadvertently adopted a profile which, at each DME fix, was one altitude step ahead and below the correct procedure. ..Contributory causal factors were thought to be the inevitable complexity of the approach and the associated approach chart.\"\n\nIn other words, both crashes we probably caused, or at least contributory causes were the lack of communication between the ground and aircraft.\n\nWhen the investigation gave its findings, one, among many of its recommendations was that the Nepal Government and Department of Civil Aviation should “study the practicalities of providing an instrument landing system (ILS) and radar coverage at Kathmandu.” Another finding was that working conditions be improved for air traffic controllers, including providing training and formal air traffic controller licenses. \n\nAnd yet it was only two years later, in 1994, rating and licensing of air traffic controllers was indeed introduced.  In 1998 that an ASR/SSR radar system was inaugurated.   \n\nNow, 20 years on, that radar system is obsolete.       "body": "Do *Himalayan salt lamps* actually do what it is claimed? Naturally in the high Himalayan mountains few people have access to electricity (perhaps through solar) and certainly going back more than a couple of decades no one had power to run electric lamps.  However, it is believed that if you place a lump of Himalayan salt by the door, if a bad person enters your house, the negative effects of this visit, or **evil spirits** will be kept away by the salt.\n\nSo maybe there is something in this.  Or is there?\n\nI have three salt lamps - one at my desk, near my laptop, one in the lounge and one in the bedroom. Do I feel any different?  No.  Does the atmosphere feel any different? No.  Do I believe there is some magic going on?  Yes.  I live in - they have just announced - the 5th most polluted country in the world  - Nepal (hard to believe right?).  Kathmandu is constantly full of dust and vehicle pollution.  So maybe I need more than 3 lamps to mitigate the effect of all this.  The dust is actually tangible - I would say it would take about 3 hours after dusting a table for it to be visibly dirty again.  The pollution from exhaust fumes is less easy to see but we do have monitors in place.  And that's a topic for another blog entry! \n\nMeantime,  all three lamps of are left on while I am in the house.  The one in the lounge is left on all night.  A friend in Ireland found the element of her salt lamp would get rusty quickly and need to be replaced.  On enquiry she was told that they should be left on.  This is because the salt absorbs moisture and thus, turning the lamp off for a long time will make it 'sweat' and the moisture will cause rusting on the electric element part.  So now she leaves her lamp on 24/7. If I'm at  home the lamps are on around 15 hours a day, if I am out then maybe around 7 hours a day.  So that seems enough to keep them dry.  In the 15 months I have had my lamps only one has needed its bulb replaced.  \n\nSo what is my overall opinion of *Himalayan salt lamps*?  I really do think there is something in the believe that they can provide healing, I just think that 3 are not enough if the positive ions in the air are abundant.  But mainly I believe they do create a calming atmosphere.
