      "body": "Here is a hypothetical scenario:\nWe are a blockchain startup that just raised 10 million dollars in a crowdsale.\nHow should we manage our runway?\n\nMore specifically, how do we pay ourselves?\n\nBefore I go any further, I should say that I have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about. I have been a solopreneur for majority of my productive life, and have limited experience with team work, and absolutely no experience in running companies. Perhaps my fresh, and rather naive view can be useful to re-think the 'standard' way of doing things. Feedback on these ideas is very welcome.\n\n$5,000 a month for everyone\nI think everyone should be paid the base salary of $5,000 in notional value. The actual means of payment may vary (Bitcoin, ETH, Fiat, etc), but its underlying value should be calculated and capped to the maximum with each payment.\n\nWhy $5,000?\nThis salary is high enough for comfortable living in most places around the world, but low enough to repel people whom are only interested in the size of the salary, and not the project itself.\n\nWhy Everyone?\nYes, everyone should be paid the same. The CEO as well as the junior developer we just hired. By paying everyone the same, we decouple the subjective value of each team member and behind the back politicking (playing favorites, asking for raises, etc...) from the salary.\n\nsalary-negotiation.jpg\n\nVoting based Token Bonus events\nEvery 4 months, there should be an offsite gathering with goals of reviewing past progress, strategy and team bonding.\n\nDuring each offsite, a certain, pre-determined quantity of token is to be distributed as a bonus. This token is the native blockchain token of the project that the team is working on.\n\nThe bonus is paid in tokens, so that every team member is incentivized to do the best work they can, for the benefit of the project, which benefits the team and individuals alike (virtuous cycle).\n\nVoting based distribution\nEvery member gets an equal portion of voting shares. Every member can use their shares in arbitrary amounts to vote on other people in the organization. Participation should be voluntary.\n\nAlso, a weird anomaly in individual vote sums, particularly in regards to people in executive positions should trigger a performance review.\n\nFire fast, and pay well to leave\nIt is possible to hire talented, good people who just aren't a fit. We should be very vigilant in weeding out people with negative long term impact on team morale and culture.\nNew hires should be on a two month probation period, and should be excluded from participation in the first token bonus event.\n\nOn Firing\nFire fast, and pay people fairly when they leave. Its not their fault that it just didn't work out - remember both parties had limited information at the time of a hire.\n\nEdit: As you may have noticed, there is no mention of founder shares or vesting. That's because there are none. Founders should not be entitled to a stake just because they started something - they should earn their place trough contributions and leadership.",

Many times hardship leads to improvisation, then innovations, which in turn creates room for businesses. The scenarios to qualify these are just endless and is visible in regular day-to-day life in Africa. Even the churches have become business centres but let's not go holy. Let's tackle schools/education first! \n\nEducation is meant to be an art, a journey towards personal growth but education in many African nations have become sheer business. Start from primary schools; every nook and cranny in many African nations, has a school! Any small space available is turned into a school and it is not shocking to find one teacher tending to 3 classes because the school owner wants to cut on salary. Now this cuts down on standard as many of these teachers employed in these low-quality schools are not certified. Many of these teachers are simply students who just finished secondary school awaiting to get admission into University. \n\nOfcourse, gaining entry into the University is a day's topic. There are secondary school students in Africa who have had to wait 10 years to get into the University. \n\nFirst of all, in many of these nations, there are just a few qualified universities to host the multitudes of secondary school graduates yearly, so there has to be a way to filter this number and that is where middle-man examination-boards come in; another avenue for business. Instead of having these myriads of students get admission into the University, they are made to apply to write exams, external to the University qualification exams. This places an additional barrier against entry into University and more money made from sales of exam application forms from these third-party organization/boards.\n\nOfcourse, if you failed, you will have to wait an entire year again; but just if you passed, you will have to go and face another examination, set by the University itself and when you fail that one, you will have to wait another whole year to attempt two exams again!\n\nIn some African nations, it is not unheard-of that examination results are ceased. In cases like this, no results are released and you will have to wait one whole year again to attempt these exams again. \n\nI tell you, this is just the beginning! After all the rigor of gaining admission into the University, you can be sure of spending 5 to 7 years instead of the regular 4 years for a Bachelor's degree, all because education in Africa is sheer business. Apart from being put under compulsion by lecturers to bribe your way through University, there is always the common chance that your University semester exam results are missing and you compulsorily have to spend additional years, to redo course that you never failed. Ofcourse, even if you come back the next year to simply partake in one-course exam so as to be cleared for graduation, you will be made to pay whole tuition-fees; \"extra un-recorded revenue for the school\"!\n\nMany students become more of business men and half-baked students afterall. Before the end of university, many students have set up their own means to create improvised business building on the setup of their lecturers.
