But any change in colour,\ntogether with certain other symptoms, is generally\nindicative of an infection and requires medical\nattention.\n\nKeep an eye down there\n\nYour first clue that something may be amiss down\nbelow could be an increase in the amount and\ntexture of discharge, a slight odour or a colour\nchange.\n\nWhite\n\nThis is generally the normal colour of discharge,\nespecially around the time of your period, but if it’s\naccompanied by itching and resembles lumpy cottage\ncheese in texture, it may signal a yeast infection and\nwarrants treatment.\n\nClear\n\nThis is the discharge you want – it’s clear and watery\nand is perfectly normal. It can occur at any time,\nalthough it may be particularly prevalent after\nexercise. If it’s clear, but a bit sticky/stretchy and\nresembles mucous, it merely suggests you are\novulating and is nothing to be concerned about.\n\nBrown\n\nIf this type of discharge occurs during your period it\nis normal, even if it contains a bit of blood; and if it\noccurs at the end of your period it may just be\nresidual menstrual blood. However, if you have a\nmore bloody, spotty discharge between your periods,\nit may indicate pregnancy. In very rare instances it\ncan indicate cervical cancer, so if you are concerned\nit’s best to get a medical check-up.\n\nYellow or green\n\nA discharge that is thick in texture and has a greenish\nor yellowish-tinge to it is not a sign of a healthy\nvagina, especially if it has a bad odour. Often this\nturns out to be the infection trichomoniasis, which is\na sexually transmitted infection (STI).\n\nThe main culprits for upsetting the delicate internal\nbacteria balance in the vagina include:\n\nAntibiotic use\nContraceptive medications\nDouching\nDiabetes\nPregnancy\nStress\nWearing underwear that is too tight or synthetic\n\nHow to keep your vagina healthy\n\nMaintaining a healthy vagina does not require a lot of\neffort, but is something you need to do.
