| title | The Newspaper Factory |
| body | Could robots make a newspaper? The question is timely and sage, for reporters may be obsolete, in this brave new computer age. Robot spelling is impeccable, their grammar without flaw, and facts so completely factual, that they rule in courts of law. Robot headlines are always accurate, and exactly fit the space, though the content may seem slightly dull, to members of mere human race. They may need a token human, to talk to a stubborn source, who worries that with robots, you're always on the record of course. And another to deal with problems, that come up from time to time, and to explain the stuff machine logic can't, like politics and crime. And computers that hang unpredictably, endless complaints in language crude, while the publisher whines about circulation, and look! We're being sued. The cost of newsprint goes up and up, almost as fast as the union's demands. Now the advertisers are yelling, about news of competing brands. Everyone complains about the comics, yet it's the single most read page, and many won't buy a paper, now downloading is all the rage. Still another deadline is looming. Hurry and cut from a story that's long. Know that getting it right won't stop them, from saying you got the story wrong. Yes, robots could put out a paper, all shiny like chrome-plated struts, but to do the job the way it's meant, you have to be completely nuts.

This dates from the days when I worked in the IT department at a daily newspaper. It is even closer to reality now than it was then!

|

| body | Physical pain can be used to discourage unwanted activities. Emotional pain can help them learn empathy and keep them under control - or twist them into bitter monsters. With either kind of pain, if robots can feel it, we have no moral right to inflict it on them without very good reason. Bottom line: Making robots able to feel pain makes them more like people. If you make them more like people, you must also treat them more like people. |

| title | To be a poet (#6 in a possibly infinite series) |
| body | Is it really a poem or is it prose with line breaks? Contrary to popular belief, poetry does not have to be unreadable, with random words thrown together in no apparent order. At the same time, if it sounds like something you would say in ordinary conversation, it may not be very poetic. In a poem, the words are connected by rhythm and by ideas (metaphor), not just by grammar. You can't make prose into a poem by removing prepositions or by splitting the lines at the commas. It takes more thought than that. Think how your poem reads. Take out the line breaks and read it as if it were not a poem. If nothing changes, if it becomes simply a bunch of sentences, it may not be a poem at all. Try again. |

| body | I'll give you a quarter to go into the cavern, to seek out the monsters in the plummeting black. Inch by inch pushing your feet to new regions, hands blindly feeling each invisible crag, wandering deep as your frightened breath quickens, imagining the death just beyond your frail reach! I'll give you a dollar to call from the darkness, describing the fears that haunt you within, the tremors you feel with each twisting and turning, the terror that grips you with every slight breeze. Shout out to those nervously guarding the entrance, how right they were to stay shivering behind. I'll give you a kingdom when you return from your journey, the conquering hero come back safe to your kin, shaken in spirit but never yet broken, changed by the horror but still terribly alive, plagued by nightmares of a night without ending, stronger in heart, an example to all. I'll give you a soul if you can explain to your children, what manner of person could do what you did, to muster such courage as lurked in your spirit, and face the worst fears the abyss could inspire, mapping the secrets of a land deeply hidden, and finding it safe ... to leave. |

| title | A Halloween Poetry Treat! |
| body | Every year the Science Fiction Poetry Association hosts a Halloween poetry page. The page contains audio files of poets reading their spookiest poems. Or in my case this year, it's not spooky so much as goofy. Science Fiction poetry is an umbrella term by the way. Back in the '60s (which is when the SFPA started) anything that was kind of weird or not based in the real world was referred to as science fiction. So it includes fantasy, horror, hard science fiction, soft science fiction and all sorts of other things. But the page I'm referring to now is just Halloweenish stuff. Please go visit and enjoy. And if you like it, you might consider joining the organization. http://sfpoetry.com/halloween.html |

| body |
In a way it's like sitting in a jazz club late at night, after enough drinks to be mellow but not so many that you don't notice the shot. There's smoke in the room and smoky music. And you don't know all the people, even if the faces seem kind of friendly and familiar. The music makes you ache more than a little, with longing for half remembered friends on other nights, in other, even smokier clubs. It's a little like that except that the smoke is from a revolver and one of those nice faces is staring straight up at the unreachable moon. And instead of a classy brush on a snare-head, you hear footsteps running away and the echoes of your own tired, ineffectual yell to stop. Or maybe it's like a dream about that club, in the seconds before the police raid the place for reasons unknown and eternally unknowable. Unanswerable, like the body there on the floor. Dreamily, you holster your gun and you light a smoke and you wonder what you'll tell the police. And somewhere in your mind, you can hear the saxophone wailing.
|

| body | I doubt that Wellington had any opinion about Duroc because they probably never crossed path. Wellington, as you know, was mainly involved in the Iberian peninsula, against the Marshall Soult and Massena. As for the descendancy, he had a son and a daughter. Interestingly, he gave to his son the name "Napoleon", evidence of his attachment to the Emperor. However, his son would die after one year, no more. |

| title | To be a poet (#5 in a possibly infinite series) |
| body |

Build a poem from start to finish.

It's possible to just throw together words and get a decent poem but mostly it doesn't work well. It's better to have a beginning and an end, with changes or transitions in between. The changes can be in tone, or in word choice, attitude, point of view, or any other element.

One way to look at it is in terms of narrative arc (even for non-narrative poems, though in those this is more metaphorical). There is usually some kind of set up. In a poem this may be introducing the subject, or the point of view, or the prevailing imagery. Then, there is some exposition of conflict or scenes along a journey. Then there is resolution, some revelation or question that ties it all together.

Though poetry has no iron clad rules, this gives you a powerful lens through which to view a poem. Where does it start? What imagery, emotion or scene is used at the beginning? How is that element (scene, emotion, image, etc) different at the end? Is there a progression from the first to the last? Is the progression tight or loose? (Or so unclear it needs revision?)

Consider the "narrative" structure of a poem both in reading and writing poetry. It helps see the poem as a whole, rather than just a bunch of lines.

|

| body | (yawn) Being taxed per mile is old news for truckers. IFTA (International Fuel Tax Association) has been stealing from us for decades. Oregon charges _per mile_ while in the state. So much so that a _LOT_ of truck traffic detours through Washington State to avoid the road tax in Oregon. Thieves are gonna steal. It's their nature. |

| body | Governments like self-driving cars because they can be forced to obey traffic signs and police directives. However, without revenue from tickets, governments will go to a per-mile model of taxation. You will start demanding the car take the cheapest route (and do it faster) rather than the best. Consequently, roads around hospitals, shopping malls and big commercial districts will become the most expensive. You won't have to pay for parking because you can just send the car home. But you'll still have to pay! |

| body |

It's a truism that poets keep notebooks. I keep mine on the computer but I used to have actual physical notebooks of mostly unfinished and unusable poetic work. Not everything can be a finished poem. Sometimes you just need to jot down a line or two, try something out, play with the wording, the meter, the rhythm. Get it down somewhere, before you forget it! Open a file, buy a notebook, sign up for an online service that saves information. Whatever. Keep a notebook of continuing efforts at poetification (No, I don't think that's really a word. Call it poetic license).

This is part of practicing the craft and part of learning to think like a poet. Poems do not spring forth from the air by magic. For every finished and readable poem, there may be a hundred fragments that didn't quite work. Fragments you might be able to work someday, or that may even inspire something better. To be clear, this is not a journal of the poet's life. Keep one of those if you want but keep it separate from your working notebooks.

You have to be your own scribe. Keep the thoughts. Work out the words. Try different approaches, themes, styles. Don't worry if it seems that there is more of that partial work than finished poetry. Every house needs a foundation, unseen beneath. Build it and build on it.

|

| body | I've read about this discourse on Haiku syllables as well, @irvingprime. For the sake of this exercise I wanted to work within the 5-7-5 syllable structure for the challenge of it. You bring up a good point about the "Aha" moment at the end, all good haiku have this element. I mainly use the form as a writing exercise. I've found if you do this enough you become much better at expressing your ideas in a more condensed way, with less words. |

| body | Sorry but I have to respectfully disagree. The restriction on syllable counts is largely a myth, probably caused by poor translation from the original Japanese. Instead of 5-7-5 you could do 4-6-5 or even 1-7-4. The biggest dependency is that it have a sort of explosion of meaning at the end (often referred to as an "Aha!") There are other strictures of varying importance (A "season" word in the first line, the "cut" word, etc) but what I take as the very biggest is that it should not simply be a single sentence split up into lines of the right syllable count. At least one of the lines should be a separate thought, preferably one that changes the meaning of the others. Really good haiku makes you stop and think for a second (or more). Done well, it's a very powerful form. But to really get it, you have to get beyond the syllable counting nonsense. |
