      "body": "Could robots make a newspaper?\nThe question is timely and sage,\nfor reporters may be obsolete,\nin this brave new computer age.\n\nRobot spelling is impeccable,\ntheir grammar without flaw,\nand facts so completely factual,\nthat they rule in courts of law.\n\nRobot headlines are always accurate,\nand exactly fit the space,\nthough the content may seem slightly dull,\nto members of mere human race.\n\nThey may need a token human,\nto talk to a stubborn source,\nwho worries that with robots,\nyou're always on the record of course.\n\nAnd another to deal with problems,\nthat come up from time to time,\nand to explain the stuff machine logic can't,\nlike politics and crime.\n\nAnd computers that hang unpredictably,\nendless complaints in language crude,\nwhile the publisher whines about circulation,\nand look! We're being sued.\n\nThe cost of newsprint goes up and up,\nalmost as fast as the union's demands.\nNow the advertisers are yelling,\nabout news of competing brands.\n\nEveryone complains about the comics,\nyet it's the single most read page,\nand many won't buy a paper,\nnow downloading is all the rage.\n\nStill another deadline is looming.\nHurry and cut from a story that's long.\nKnow that getting it right won't stop them,\nfrom saying you got the story wrong.\n\nYes, robots could put out a paper,\nall shiny like chrome-plated struts,\nbut to do the job the way it's meant,\nyou have to be completely nuts.\n<hr>\n<p>This dates from the days when I worked in the IT department at a daily newspaper.&nbsp; It is even closer to reality now than it was then!</p>\n</html>",

      "body": "Is it really a poem or is it prose with line breaks?\n\nContrary to popular belief, poetry does not have to be unreadable, with random words thrown together in no apparent order. At the same time, if it sounds like something you would say in ordinary conversation, it may not be very poetic.\n\nIn a poem, the words are connected by rhythm and by ideas (metaphor), not just by grammar. You can't make prose into a poem by removing prepositions or by splitting the lines at the commas. It takes more thought than that.\n\nThink how your poem reads. Take out the line breaks and read it as if it were not a poem. If nothing changes, if it becomes simply a bunch of sentences, it may not be a poem at all.  Try again.",

      "body": "Every year the Science Fiction Poetry Association hosts a Halloween poetry page. The page contains audio files of poets reading their spookiest poems. Or in my case this year, it's not spooky so much as goofy. \n\nScience Fiction poetry is an umbrella term by the way. Back in the '60s (which is when the SFPA started) anything that was kind of weird or not based in the real world was referred to as science fiction. So it includes fantasy, horror, hard science fiction, soft science fiction and all sorts of other things.\n\nBut the page I'm referring to now is just Halloweenish stuff. Please go visit and enjoy.       "body": "<html>\n<p>Build a poem from start to finish.</p>\n<p>It's possible to just throw together words and get a decent poem but mostly it doesn't work well. It's better to have a beginning and an end, with changes or transitions in between. The changes can be in tone, or in word choice, attitude, point of view, or any other element.</p>\n<p>One way to look at it is in terms of narrative arc (even for non-narrative poems, though in those this is more metaphorical). There is usually some kind of set up. In a poem this may be introducing the subject, or the point of view, or the prevailing imagery. Then, there is some exposition of conflict or scenes along a journey. Then there is resolution, some revelation or question that ties it all together.</p>\n<p>Though poetry has no iron clad rules, this gives you a powerful lens through which to view a poem. Where does it start? What imagery, emotion or scene is used at the beginning? How is that element (scene, emotion, image, etc) different at the end? Is there a progression from the first to the last? Is the progression tight or loose? (Or so unclear it needs revision?)&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Consider the \"narrative\" structure of a poem both in reading and writing poetry. It helps see the poem as a whole, rather than just a bunch of lines.</p>\n</html>",

      "body": "<html>\n<p>It's a truism that poets keep notebooks. I keep mine on the computer but I used to have actual physical notebooks of mostly unfinished and unusable poetic work. Not everything can be a finished poem. Sometimes you just need to jot down a line or two, try something out, play with the wording, the meter, the rhythm. Get it down somewhere, before you forget it! Open a file, buy a notebook, sign up for an online service that saves information. Whatever. Keep a notebook of continuing efforts at poetification (No, I don't think that's really a word. Call it poetic license).</p>\n<p>This is part of practicing the craft and part of learning to think like a poet. Poems do not spring forth from the air by magic. For every finished and readable poem, there may be a hundred fragments that didn't quite work. Fragments you might be able to work someday, or that may even inspire something better. To be clear, this is not a journal of the poet's life. Keep one of those if you want but keep it separate from your working notebooks.</p>\n<p>You have to be your own scribe. Keep the thoughts. Work out the words. Try different approaches, themes, styles. Don't worry if it seems that there is more of that partial &nbsp;work than finished poetry. Every house needs a foundation, unseen beneath. Build it and build on it.</p>\n</html>",

      "body": "I've read about this discourse on Haiku syllables as well, @irvingprime.  For the sake of this exercise I wanted to work within the 5-7-5 syllable structure for the challenge of it.  You bring up a good point about the \"Aha\" moment at the end, all good haiku have this element. I mainly use the form as a writing exercise.       "body": "Sorry but I have to respectfully disagree.\n\nThe restriction on syllable counts is largely a myth, probably caused by poor translation from the original Japanese. Instead of 5-7-5 you could do 4-6-5 or even 1-7-4. The biggest dependency is that it have a sort of explosion of meaning at the end (often referred to as an \"Aha!\") \n\nThere are other strictures of varying importance (A \"season\" word in the first line, the \"cut\" word, etc) but what I take as the very biggest is that it should not simply be a single sentence split up into lines of the right syllable count.  At least one of the lines should be a separate thought, preferably one that changes the meaning of the others. \n\nReally good haiku makes you stop and think for a second (or more). Done well, it's a very powerful form. But to really get it, you have to get beyond the syllable counting nonsense.",
