      "body": "단테 - 세속을 노래한 시인\n에리히 아우어바흐Erich Auerbach 지음, 이종인 옮김, 연암서가\n\n\n\n좋은 책이다. 간결한 문장으로 핵심을 찌른다. 이종인 선생의 번역도 신뢰할 만하며 단테가 어떻게 문학적으로 성장해 나갔으며, 어떻게 근대 문학의 시초가 되었는가를 분석하고 예증한다. 단테 문학의 변화와 성장은 이 책의 중심 테마이며, <<신곡>>을 향해간다. \n\n> 인간에 대한 단테의 미메시스는 고전 고대의 미메시스와는 전혀 다른 것이었고, 그 이전의 중세 시대에는 전혀 없었던 미메시스를 도입한 최초의 인물이다. 단테는 고전 고대처럼 인간을 아득히 떨어져 있는 신화적 영웅으로 보지도 않았고, 중세 시대처럼 인간의 윤리적 타입을 추상적으로 혹은 일화적으로 재현하지도 않았다. 단테는 살아있는 역사적 리얼리티 속의 인간, 단일성과 전체성을 간직한 구체적 개인으로서의 인간을 재현했다.  \n> 343쪽\n\n\n사실적인 표현과 문장이 동시대의 다른 작가들과 어떻게 구분되는가를 실제 문학 작품들을 예시하여 중세 후반기의 문학과 단테가 이룬 문학의 차이를 보여준다. 딱딱하고 어색했던 중세 말의 표현들이 어떻게 자연주의적으로, 감각적이며 세속적인 풍성함을 가지게 되는가를 말이다. \n\n\n> 조반니 피사로 이래 화가들은 세상에 대해 날카로운 지각을 개발해왔다. 그래서 단테와 그 시대의 위대한 화가인 조토 사이에는 어떤 유사점이 발견된다. 두 사람에게 사건은 자급자족적 리얼리티로 다시 태어난다. 두 사람은 고전적 감각을 지녔고 리드미컬한 구조를 구현한다. 또 이 세상의 감각적 구체성 속에서 사물에 내재하는 법칙을 파악하는 방법도 상당히 유사하다. \n> 195쪽 \n\n\n하지만 단테 문학 이상으로 이 책에서 내 관심을 끌었던 것들이 있었다. 그 첫 번째가 플로티노스에 대한 짧은 설명이다. 몇 페이지에 걸친 플로티노스에 대한 설명에서 아우어바흐는 중세 초기 미메시스 예술의 몰락을 플로티노스를 통해 설명한다. 실은 이러한 관점에서의 이해는 나로서도 처음 읽는다. 그만큼 중세 초기 신플라톤주의에 대한 소개가 거의 없고 플로티노스 철학에 대한 번역이나 소개는 최근의 일이기도 하지만, 그냥 막연하게 중세 예술에서의 미메시스에 대한 무관심, 또는 경멸이 종교적인 이유에서의 엄숙주의라고 여겼던 것이 구체적으로 설명되었기 때문이다. \n\n> 신플라톤주의의 창시자 플로티노스는 플라톤과 아리스토텔레스의 형이상학에서 가져온 여러 요소들을 융합하여 그 자신의 유출주의를 만들어냈고, 신비하면서도 종합적인 명상으로 기울어졌다. 이렇게 하여 영Spirit이 참여하는 지상의 아름다움이라는 개념이 생겨났다. 그렇지만 아름다움은 내적 원형idea의 상태에서만 순수하다고 보았고 물질 속에서는 들어 있지 않다고 생각했다. 플로티노스의 사상에서 아리스토텔레스가 말한 형상 없는 질료는 플라톤의 비존재non-being와 동일시되어, 완전한 존재를 갖춘 이데아와는 정반대의 것으로 간주되었다. \n> 이렇게 하여 질료-물질-는 아리스토텔레스가 말하는 단순한 저항을 의미하지 않게 되었다. 물질은 그 다양성과 분할 가능성 때문에 아리스토텔레스가 주장한 것과는 전혀 다른 의미의 악(惡)이 되었다. 영이 물질세계로 유출되기는 하지만, 다양하고 구체적인 물질은 피지스-physis 이것은 개체화의 시작principium individuationis-이 되는데 곧 저급한 영혼을 의미함)를 통하여 다시 한 번 악하고 불순한 것이 된다. 따라서 미메시스 예술은 경험적 리얼리티와 접촉하지 못하고 순수한 에우레시스-euresis:내적 형상의 복사물-가 된다. 플로티노스는 미학의 영성적 체계에 대하여 이론적 기반을 제공했지만 그 실제적 결과는 미메시스의 부정이었다. 그는 생성becoming보다 존재being를, 물질보다는 이데아의 우월성을 강조했고, 물질과 변화를 형이상학적 비존재-존재하지 않는 것-와 동일시했다. 이런 사상은 세속적 운명을 예술 속에서 재현된 가능성을 모조리 파괴했다. \n>56쪽 \n\n두 번째는 그리스도 스토리에 대한 설명이다. 성경을 종교 경전으로, 그리고 서양예술작품에서 표현된 다양한 종교적 주제나 소재의 원천 정도로만 여겼지, 그것을 하나의 서사 문학으로 접근하지 못했는데, 아우어바흐는 이를 분석하고 있었다. \n\n\n> 그리스도 스토리는 로고스logos의 비유parousia 혹은 이데아의 나타남 그 이상의 의미를 갖고 있다. \n> 51쪽 \n\n\n> 그리스도 스토리는 개인적 생활의 강렬함을 드러낼 뿐만 아니라 그 다양성과 풍부한 형식 또한 보여준다. 그 스토리는 고대 미메시스 이론의 한계를 돌파한다. 그 스토리 속에서 인간은 지상의 위엄을 잃어버린다. 모든 일이 인간에게 일어날 수 있고, 고전주의에서 규정한 장르의 구분(합리와 우연의 구분)은 가뭇없이 사라진다. 숭고한 스타일과 천박한 스타일의 구분도 더 이상 없다. 복음서에는 마치 고대 코미디처럼 온갖 계급의 사람들이 등장한다. 어부, 왕, 고위 사제, 세리, 창녀 등이 그들이다. 지체 높은 사람이라고 해서 희극 속의 인물처럼 행동하지 않는다. 그와는 전혀 다르게, 모든 사회적, 미학적 제한이 철폐된다. 그 무대는 다양한 종류의 인간을 허용한다. 그 무대에 오르는 캐릭터들은 하나의 집단으로 혹은 각각의 개별 인물로 등장하든 여전히 다양성을 유지한다. 각각의 개인은 온전하게 합법화되며, 그 합법화는 사회적인 기반과는 무관하다. 그의 현세적 지위와는 상관없이 그의 개성은 완전히 개발되며, 그에게 일어난 일은 고상하지도 천박하지도 않다. 예수는 말할 것도 없고 심지어 베르도도 엄청난 굴욕을 당한다. 그리스도 스토리가 갖고 있는 자연주의(자연스러운 사실주의)는 깊이나 넓이에 있어서 전례 없는 것이다. 고대의 시인이나 역사가들은 인간의 사건을 이런 방식으로 서술하지 않았고 그럴 능력도 없었다. \n> 53쪽에서 54쪽 \n\n세 번째는 단테와 토마스 아퀴나스의 관계다. 단테는 토마스 아퀴나스의 철학에 깊이 심취해 있었으며, 그 철학이 단테의 문학에도 고스란히 반영되어 있다. \n\n> 글을 쓸 때 단테처럼 철저하게 합리적이고 체계적으로 쓰는 사상가는 없을 것이다. 이런 단테에게 결정적 영향을 미친 것은 아퀴나스 철학이었다. 그가 믿고 따른 아퀴나스 철학은 개성적 형태를 중시하고 그에 대한 묘사를 정당화했다. 성 토마스는 이 세상이 하나의 이미지를 따라 창조되었다는 신학적인 교리로써 사물의 다양성을 설명했다.(...) 따라서 천지창조 전체를 두고 볼 때, 다양성은 완전함의 반대 명제가 아니라 그것의 적절한 표현이다. 더욱이 우주는 정적인 상태가 아니라 움직임에 적극 참여하며, 그 움직임은 우주의 형식들을 움직여 자기-완성으로 나아간다. 이런 행동의 능력이 발휘되는 과저에서 다양성은 완전함으로 나아가는 필요한 과정이다. \n> 178쪽에서 179쪽 \n\n단테의 작품에서 드러나는 세속적 자연주의는 아퀴나스 철학에 기반해 있는 셈이다. 마치 고딕 자연주의처럼. \n\n책 뒤에 수록된 '인명-용어풀이'도 꽤 재미있게 읽었다. 잘 알려져 있는 철학자에 대한 설명보다 가령 사랑이나 천국, 연옥 같은 단어에 대한 풀이는 그 자체로 흥미로운 것이었다. 에리히 아우어바흐의 책이라는 점에서 반드시 읽어야겠지만, 이 번역서 자체의 완성도도 나쁘지 않고 강력하게 추천한다. 꽤 밀도가 높은 책이라 읽는데 시간이 걸리겠지만, 이 책을 읽는 동안 시간이 어떻게 흘러갔는지 모를 것이다. \n\n아래는 사랑이라는 용어 풀이에 실린 아퀴나스의 사랑에 대한 정의다. 선한 것은 아름답고 사랑스럽다는 것일까. 선미kalokagathia 의식은 그리스의 것이라 여겼는데, 중세 후기에도 어김없이 등장한 것이다. \n\n\n> \"사랑한다는 것은 선을 원함velle bonum이다. 자기 자신에게 또는 남에게 선을 원하는 것이다. 따라서 사랑은 이기적 사랑과 우정의 사랑으로 나뉜다. 사랑의 고유한 원인은 선이다. 사랑은 사람의 본성에 타고난 것이나 그 본성에 어울리는 것이다. 악이 선'처럼' 나타날 때 악을 사랑하게 된다. 아름다움pulchrum은 선과 같은 개념이다. 다른 점이 있다면 아름다움의 소유는 보는 것 또는 인식에 있는데, 선의 소유는 사랑 속에 있다. 사랑의 가까운 원인은 선에 대한 인식이다. 이 인식이 없으면 그것을 결코 욕심낼 수 없다. 사랑의 결과는 상호 침투이다. 왜냐하면 사랑은 그것을 주는 자가 그것을 받는 자 속에 있고, 또 반대로 사랑 받는 자가 사랑하는 자 속에 있도록 만드는 것이기 때문이다. 엑스터시(황홀)는 사랑의 결과이다. 왜냐하면 자신의 영혼이 자기 자신으로부터 나와서 사랑의 대상으로 옮겨가기 때문이다. 격정과 질투는 사랑의 결과이다. 강렬한 사랑은 그것을 반대하고 가로막는 온갖 장애물을 다 물리치기 때문이다. 사랑은 사랑하는 자가 행하는 모든 것의 원인이다. 바로 사랑하기 때문에 모든 것을 행하게 되는 것이다.\" \n> 토마스 아퀴나스, <<신학대전>> 2부 1편 중에서(367쪽 재인용)",
