| body | We are finally coming out of the “RAJ”. Repealing section 377 from Indian law is a step towards building a real open society based on the fundamental right of freedom and privacy. .jpg) It is a momentous day for India. We are finally breaking the shackles of the British rule by changing laws that were formed in the 19th century and coming out of it. A commendable job is done by the Supreme Court of India and the bench. Finally, section 377 goes down the drain. Read the judgment it is quite crisp and worth your time. The social media is slammed with people hailing the judgment, writing how great a step it is. So cool. I feel awesome. Now taking a step back. What is our reality? In India, we don’t have respect for privacy (Public territory and intimate space) or probably we don’t understand the term in itself. Even if you are standing in a line people will stand right behind/ in front of you. You can feel their bodies. We were taught to keep one hand distance while standing in a line in school. All forgotten I guess. Privacy is a right granted by the constitution and with whom one gets intimate is purely their discretion. The law is repealed which is great but will the society accept it? Will normal people like you and me accept homosexuality? That is an important question and something we should think about. Passing a law is synonymous with empowering but do we want to be empowered is the question. I am very sure even within my friends I know folks who welcome the law but will not accept a gay friend. The Supreme Court gave us a foundation and now it is up to us to build upon it. Building a more acceptable society. What we can do. Our constitution gave us a firm foundation, now we need to build upon that. To really benefit from this judgment we need to bring in a change within ourselves and how we treat others who think differently from us. We also need to understand science and be more objective about ideas which do not chime in with us. In India, a large percentage of the population considers homosexuality and bisexuality as not natural, it does not matter if the law of land accepts it or not. People who recognize themselves with the above are silently and behind their backs mocked. We still don’t want our children to talk to anyone who has a different orientation. The word ‘He is a Gay’ is used in a derogatory sense in India. Though we have people who have excelled in their respective fields and have different sexual orientation. There is no dearth of role models. Everyone hailing about the judgment should question themselves and try to understand the true meaning of supporting this. It means you are okay if your child says that she likes girls or he like boys and would spend their life with them. It also means that you are comfortable sharing your homosexual fantasies with your partner and vice versa. We need to get comfortable discussing such topics and be sure of accepting the reality. Having a scientific approach here will help us in understanding and accepting these ideas. If we study nature there are organisms that can change sex. Going back in history and trying to understand why heterosexual relationships were given importance can also be worth pondering. It was a way to procreate. Now with advancement in science and technology in place we don’t need a heterosexual relationship to procreate. You can have a child using IVF, surrogacy (it was prevalent before as well), adoption etc. Hence people can have more freedom in terms of the choices they make. And instead of living in a closet and getting frustrated every day can lead a normal life. I believe the next step for us is to have more conversations around it and help the ideas spread. It should not be just for the metro areas it should reach to every nook and corner of the country. A better approach for any idea or thought process to spread is to include it as part of the education system. That will help build a generation which is exposed to different ideas and hence can better understand and be comfortable with the complexities and different behaviors around them. “I am what I am. So take me as I am. No one can escape from their individuality.” — CJI Dipak Misra Originally published at www.inperpetualbeta.com on September 8, 2018. |

| body | Why I wrote this article: Help myself question the new found love for extreme fitness. And to understand If under the cover of fitness I was running from something else. Everyone around me is so focused on fitness these days that I feel the current age is the most physically fit set of humans in eons. Everyone is very serious about their exercising routines, a lot of them have adopted running, cycling, hiking, yoga etc. There is a plethora of information available on the internet for the kind of exercises you can or should do based on your body type. In the last couple of years, a large number of fitness companies have come up that coach you for exercises, connect you with like-minded people around you so that you can stay motivated, helps you with your diets by suggesting recipes and you can also log what you eat. There are so many wearable devices available now where you can track your exercise up to the level of madness. In terms of numbers, the whole fitness industry has grown from $81 billion in 2015 to $85.2 billion in 2017 and is projected to reach $87.5 billion by 2018 in revenues. Indeed these numbers are very interesting and an exponential growth is predicted for the fitness industry. Even in corporates and in politics we have executives throwing fitness challenges to each other and their teams. The same becomes viral on platforms like LinkedIn and you can see it everywhere around you. I have also been a part of this fad. I exercise almost 6 to 7 days a week. Apart from the regular gym, I might also go for a swim or some other form of exercise. People around me spend at least 3–4 hours in some form of physical exercise. And no one questions this. We all say that person is so fit and encourage them and everyone around us. I always had a feeling that something is strange. Out of 24 hours a day 8 hours you sleep, you are left with 16 hours out of that if 4 hours you are spending on exercising you are left with 12 hours. And I am sure you will be spending a couple of hours of commute, some chores and yes the social media etc. When are we actually working? Or doing what we want to do? What is the effective number of hours of focused work? Why are we spending so much time on exercising and staying fit? Please note I am not saying that staying physically fit is not important I just want to question the imbalance that is there. As per science exercising produces dopamine aka “happy hormones” that elevates our mood and makes us ‘feel’ happy. Does that mean we are spending extra hours here so that we get that extra dopamine rush and we can feel happy? Does that mean that in reality we are escaping or running away from issues in our life that make us unhappy? Maybe yes, maybe running helps us do this both literally and figuratively. I think ‘super fitness’ is the new midlife crisis disguised very neatly. And it is a cycle which you cannot break until you stop running and start thinking. It is working in surreptitious ways and with a massive intensity which makes it difficult to recognize and hence to break the loop. Think about it- staying fit has always been considered a very good habit. Our ancestors, even our parents they all go out for a morning walk and some exercises. It is taught in our schools. So we never think that thinking about ‘staying fit’ is wrong or that it can lead us to anything ‘bad’. But what we are not seeing is that everything we have learned in school had balance or was practiced in ‘moderation’. Our brains forgot this last word. And what we remembered was just ‘staying fit’ and hence we never questioned ourselves when we went off balance. Satan disguised like Santa? Physically fit does not equate to mentally fit. Not everyone who is in the best of shape is happy when they go to work or enter their homes. You will hear a lot of people saying that I am most happy when I am gyming or when I am running etc. Why do not we hear them ever say that I am happy when I am with my family or friends, or when I am at my work because maybe they are not. And their fitness routine just helps them ‘run away’ from these realities. It could be a bad family life or a job that you do not like or a relationship or something else you want to avoid. I started talking to a couple of my friends who were spending a lot of time on their fitness. They would take training for a couple of hours every day. Every weekend would go on a hike or some other ‘fitness’ related activity. Over a cup of coffee, I asked them what is going on- they looked very happy and fit. While we were talking and they were sharing their routine I realized none of them was spending any time at home. They would leave early morning for their training and come late. By the time they reached home they were very tired and would just doze off. On digging deeper one of them said I have no work as of now and I do not know what to do with my time, If I stay at home I will go mad. I don’t know what to do and hence I go for my training. The other one confessed staying at home causes a lot of tension between him and his family and hence he has set up a routine where he leaves early runs, exercises and plays for a couple of hours. By evening he is so tired that he just wants to sleep. This helps him avoid any conversation with his family and helps maintains peace. I am sure this is a case with a lot of people out there. If film actors, media personalities and athletes spend hours on their training every day, I understand, it is a part of their job. A good and well-chiseled body helps them get new business. If they will not do it they will not survive. But is it the same for others. We really need to spend some time with ourselves, go deep and understand what are we running form. We need to address those issues and not use fitness as an excuse to not have those hard conversations with our family, our partner, ourselves or whatever we are trying to avoid. We need a reality check. Take a break from running and start thinking. |

And to understand If under the cover of fitness I was running from something else.\n\n\n\nEveryone around me is so focused on fitness these days that I feel the current age is the most physically fit set of humans in eons. In terms of numbers, the whole fitness industry has grown from $81 billion in 2015 to $85.2 billion in 2017 and is projected to reach $87.5 billion by 2018 in revenues. | body | Image: Rawpixel and unsplash I was also bugged by the keto fever and decided to give it a shot. Let me tell you I exercise at least 4–5 days a week. And generally, try to keep myself fit. I usually don’t eat out, hardly take sugar. So when I decided to try Keto diet my reason was to shed a few extra kgs and see if it removes brain fog or helps in clarity. I started by reading and talking to my friend who has been very supportive of my keto diet. He always had some ideas to help me. The first thing you will need is to plan your diet. I am a vegetarian, I do eat eggs but not during summers as it generates a lot of heat in my body. So when I decided to go Keto in summers even eggs were not a possibility. So carving out a proper keto diet plan was a challenge. Everything we eat specifically in Northern parts of India is full of carbs and it will become quite difficult to plan a high fat and low carb diet. Below is my experience about going through the whole Keto thing. I would stick to intermittent fasting i.e. I would fast for 15 hours at a go which means skipping breakfast. You can take an early lunch at about 12 noon. Your eating window is open till 8 pm. I have tried different apps for recipes on the keto diet but in reality, they were of no use. The primary reason was that the ingredients they suggested are hard to find where I live or else they are too expensive to be consumed daily e.g. avocados, unsweetened butter, high-quality cheeses etc. I feel we usually forget the cost factor while talking about fitness. India is a very cost sensitive market. .jpg) Photo by Brooke Lark on Unsplash Carving a vegetarian keto diet is extremely difficult with very less option. I started my day with a half cup (small) coffee with whole milk (1/4 milk) and close to no sugar. I have a sweet tooth so it takes a lot of effort to stay away from sugar. You can also use stevia granules but again it will be expensive. Try growing the stevia plant. Next, I use to eat paneer (cottage cheese) for my early lunch. Initially, I bought paneer packets and used an air fryer to cook it. Once you start eating paneer continuously you feel something strange in your stomach. Maybe it is hard for the stomach to digest. Another thing I figured was making paneer at home was a better choice. Homemade paneer did not give that strange feeling. Hence, now I eat homemade paneer only. (This is some extra work in the whole meal planning). For snacks, I made almond and peanut butter. I usually have my snack around 4 pm. I tried eating unsweetened butter but it did not work with me at least. I added a very small amount of sugar in the homemade butter and it works quite well. I eat it with a half slice of brown bread. For dinner- I am not a rice eater and hence brown rice was not a great option for me. I eat jowar and besan mix roti with some subzi (cooked vegetable). It is a complex carbohydrate. I try to eat lots of daal but sometimes it does not happen. I also realized that I need some form of carbs by end of day. I reduced my milk intake. There is not much I can do with diet in summers. In winters I could replace dinner with eggs/omelets. How will you feel when you follow keto diet & other things: 1. Hunger Pangs- If you are also following intermittent fasting you will get hangry. Learn to control your temper. Others should not suffer because you want to achieve your fitness goals. 2. Once you start eating paneer everyday for lunch you might feel very strange in your stomach and also puckish. Drink hot water it has helped me. 3. Boredom- Having the same kind of food every day will bore you. Whenever you feel like this think about why you are following this diet and your purpose. Usually, this has helped me stick. 4. Write your macros. Be a little obsessed with your fitness. There are a lot of apps that help you track your calorie intake. I used a pen and paper and made sure it is simple. Just write the Carbs, Fats, Proteins. I used myfitnesspal.com for checking the nutrition value of what I was eating. Learn to approximate, do not make it complex. Writing down my macros on a paper had a very different effect on me. 5. You can have a cheat day it is okay. Only have one thing you like in moderate quantity once a week for e.g. single scoop of ice cream. 6. Once you reduce on sugar you will stop liking sugary stuff. This will happen. 7. You can have MCT oil in moderation. This could be expensive. You can buy good quality coconut oil. 8. You will feel very tired but that is a part of Keto. 9. Drink lemon and salt water throughout the day. You will lose a lot of electrolytes and hence it will be helpful. You will also feel less tired. 10. Get keto strips to check if you are in ketosis. This is quite handy. 11. Don’t lose your mind over it. This usually happens and then we give up. So stay practical. 12. You will not be able to follow a full keto diet in first go or even in the second and it is okay. 13. Observe your body. Listen to it. It will tell you what kind of keto you should do. Maybe zero carb is not for you which is also fine. I figured out I cannot go zero carbs. I do need some carb every day and I fine with that. Anything you do should help you make feel better and more fit in the long run instead off lethargic, tired and irritated. 14. If you have a medical condition like thyroid, diabetes first ask your doctor for the diet changes. 15. Drink lots of water. Hot is better. 16. Get friend/s who will support you in this. I have a good one. 17. I reduced my fruits intake considerably. Almost stopped. 18. I ate nuts like walnuts and almonds. Avoid cashews. So far my keto experience has been good. I feel more energetic because of low carb diet. There is more clarity as well. I feel full for longer. My general fitness is fine. I also learned few things about myself following this regime. 1. I don’t need a zero carb diet as of now. 2. I learned to control my temper and act rationally when I am hungry. This happened maybe because I had put myself under such conditions more often by following this diet. 3. I started drinking a lot of water. 4. Increased my willpower. 5. Nowadays I don’t like sugary drinks that we find in markets- cold coffee, etc. I like homemade stuff. 6. With keto, I had to cook my own meals. In a way, it is good as I have very less dependency on anyone. |

| body | Depression is a reality. We all go through it in some form or the other. At times we can recognize it and at other times people cannot recognize it and end up living with it throughout their lives. Thinking that this is how life is supposed to be lived. Depression is a silent enemy who does not differentiate much. Be it rich or poor, male or female, west or east it goes everywhere. There could be multiple reasons for depression including medical. The best advice is to accept you are suffering from it and seek help with counsellers, psychiatrist etc. But there are times and phases where you cannot get any help. Not even a friend to talk to. The depression can be a normal happening in your life- it comes and goes. (Please note- I don’t think anyone can be happy all the time or think or feel positive every moment. It is just not possible. And it is very much okay to feel depressed once in a while. That is being human. The technology around us makes us feel that we are the only ones going through this but the reality is different. Everyone feels but no one talks about it. So please do not go on someone’s Instagram or FB, What’s app status and pictures and start comparing your life. The real life is very different- at times happy, at times boring, and at times just depressing. But it is okay). You just need someone to talk to and they may not be a full-fledged doctor- just a friend, your family or someone you are comfortable talking too. What do you do then? Sometimes it is just you and your depression. Dealing with your own depression if it is not chronic or intensive is doable. You would just need to follow through a process. You will not be able to follow the “process” at times but that is okay. Below is something I would do to fight off those days. Don’t let them win. 1. Exercise- What usually happens when you feel depressed is that you don’t feel like getting of the bed. That is your first reaction. Force yourself out. Do not think of anything else in that moment. Your only task is to get out of the bed and go for a walk or exercise outside in nature. 2. Always remind yourself not to binge. When people feel depressed either they overeat or do not eat at all. Focus on eating normally. No too much sweet/sugars, absolutely no pizzas, cold drinks, energy drinks or any fast food items. 3. Eat healthy- We like it or not the fact is our mood, behavior, and emotions are a function of some chemicals inside our brains. If we can naturally increase chemicals that help us stay stress-free we should do that. Exercise is one of those ways. Eating junk will take you the other way. 4. Faith- Personally, we all need an anchor. We all need to have faith in something- it could be a god, yourself, any other higher power, future or anything but there has to be something. It is challenging to live without faith. So have faith in something. If you don’t have it in you then develop. 5. This one is hard and it is continuous work. You have to assume your responsibility. Your own ownership. And this has to go deep inside you. If you need to hammer this on to you please do that. It will be the best thing you would do to yourself. Become independent. Support yourself, manage your finances, buy yourself a house (if that makes you feel independent), take your family out on vacation. Get that feeling of freedom, freedom from self-sabotage. 6. Move out. Don’t stay at home. A change in environment is very important. The same setting may induce strange feelings and pull you down. 7. Visit places of power. For example, I believe in god. So when I feel low in life I would go to a temple. If you are an atheist you can try spending more time with nature. 8. This is probably the most powerful one. Help someone. Push your self to go out and help someone you don’t know. Maybe buy a kid something, buy food for the hungry, feed a stray dog, go to an old age home and spend time with elderlies, go do something for someone where you know they cannot repay you. Give your time to them. I don’t know why but this has a healing power. The act of doing something for someone without expectation. 9. Learn a skill. Learning is an important aspect of growing. And growth is the essence of life. Whenever you learn a new skill your mind gets rejuvenated and stronger. Your mind is also a muscle the more you use it the stronger it gets. And hence less prone to depression and stress. 10. Get bored. It is fine if you are getting bored. Boredom is also a part of life and we should accept it. Most of our issues arise because we waste a lot of time in fighting the reality. The best way is to accept the reality and then figure out a way to deal with it. I decided to accept it and write about this on a public platform because I go through these phases and I know how painful they can be. Usually, we don’t talk about them but I think it is okay to share and important to speak about them. What I have talked about are the things I do to get myself back on track. I have to push myself to do them but once I start, I feel better and more in control. Hope this helps. |

| body | Starting on your own is hard, very hard. It takes a toll on you. But what we see in media is all the glorious stories. No one talks about the everyday hardships- the lows, the shoutings, the cribbing, the angry you, the depressed you, the snapping you, your family members who also bear your unexplained behavior & more. Everyone out there (read it as in the media) is ready to guide you and help you achieve your goals. They talk about the habits of successful people. You can read a plethora of articles on the habits of Elon Musk, habits of Steve Jobs, do this and you will be successful do that and you will be more productive etc. I am saying this because there was a time I use to read them. I would have more than 30 tabs open and I would think I will read all of them. Someone is telling you to have goals and not dreams, have a process and not goals etcetera. There are hardly articles that talk about the sadness, the daily fight you have to do. The question I ended up asking myself was is it right for me? Is this helping me at becoming better at my business or becoming a better person? I started my company & I realized it is hard not just to me but to my family and friends as well. Over a week this is my behavior graph. Depression- It will be the only constant. Make it your friend. The only way to deal with it is to understand it. Why it happens, what are the triggers? Usually, if you are a startup the reason for the worst form of ‘depression’ is lack of sales, simply put your product is not making money. You feel stuck. You don’t know what to do. You compare, you think your team is not putting in efforts, you might want to blame them also. This leads you to yell, uncontrolled anger, negativity and a constant fear. What can you do? Below are some things I have tried and have worked for me. #1. Take a complete break from work for 3–4 days. Stop working. Go out, read books, meet friends enjoy life. The first day you will be anxious. Your mind will not be free. Day second you will fee a little better. By day third your mind is free, you feel light. #2. Do 30 minutes of running in a park, close to nature. You need nature to fine tune you and your lungs need more oxygen. I would recommend running in a park than gym based on my personal experience. Mornings are better. #3. Help someone & never mention it or think about “how nice you have been” after doing it. This is very important. I helped one of my friends and thought it was my duty rather than a favor. This way of thinking made a lot of difference. Try to help someone you don’t align with. Apart from helping you will also find a new found respect for yourself. #4. Don’t be overly sensitive. Most of us are very sensitive. Even I am. I react when something does not align with my views. Keep this in your head “Don’t be overly sensitive”. Remind yourself whenever you are into or getting to that sensitive zone. If you constantly repeat this in your head for a couple of days it will stick and you will save a lot of time and energy by avoiding such situations. #5. You might want to write about what is going on in your head. It works and is a good habit. #6. Observe yourself. Your habits. You can evaluate them later. Observing them will give you insight and you may discover where you might be lagging behind in terms of work and your personal life. #7. Spend time with your family and friends. Talk about their life and how things are going with them. Focus on them. Do not talk about anything related to you. Go out with them. After a couple of days, you will feel refreshed and your mind can think clearly. Then you can start thinking about your business. Maybe you need to have a clear focus area or improve processes in your business to get productivity. There can be many things, the clarity in your head will allow you to focus on the most important issue and take an action step to resolve bottlenecks. These are simple steps that I have tried myself and have helped me. Let me know what you think. |

"body": "\n\nStarting on your own is hard, very hard.
