| body | We keep hearing about Data breach news from a variety of companies: Target stores, Anthem, Yahoo, eBay, equifax, JP Morgan Chase and Verisign to mention a few. Our current passwords, in a quantum computer world, would be the easiest things to hack with a quantum mini computer using only a handful of photons. I compare the race to the quantum computer to the space race or the research to achieve a nuclear weapon during World War II. But, why the race? Because a quantum computer would perform mathematical algorithms exponentially faster than today's binary computers. This processing power, in the wrong hands, would allow someone to crack our nuclear arsenal security system or hack all the passwords of all users from any bank. Quantum computers are less effective against symmetric algorithms than against currently widely used public key algorithms. The National Security Agency issued a document called: "Commercial National Security Algorithm Suite and Quantum Computing FAQ" on January 2016, where it basically states the Quantum Computing Threat. If one really thinks about it, nothing would be safe: our bitcoin and bank account would be vulnerable, any large corporation secrets could be accessed as well, I mean the only way to be safe would be to erase yourself from the web, close your bank accounts and store your cash at home (if cryptocurrencies haven't taken over that is). Google, IBM, the NSA are going after a quantum computer as well as MIT. Quantum cryptography uses photons (the basic unit of rays of light) to send secret messages between two computers instead of what we do now, which is in bits (1s and 0s). The Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle tells us that it's "impossible" to copy or intercept these photons without altering them and alerting the recipient. Let's imagine we achieve all of this, now the problem will be Infrastructure and China has already rolled its sleeves as they have plans to build a 1200 mile quantum connection between Beijing and Shanghai (https://phys.org/news/2017-08-china-world-quantum-network.html). The project is called Jinan, the world's first unhackable computer network. Europe is also heavily investing in quantum technologies and has issued a 2016 Quantum Manifesto. The U.S. "may" not be able to win this race as we are lagging behind and most breakthroughs come from the private sector: IBM, Google, INTEL, but the U.S. Army seems to be making a few breakthroughs of their own as they announced that they could teleport quantum data wirelessly or via fiber optics. One thing is for certain, we will see the rise of quantum computers in our lifetime which is exciting to know! |

| body | The purpose of this article is to give you a quick understanding about a couple of concepts in very simple terms. I know it's very challenging for some to grasp some of these new concepts. Let's start in ancient Greece: After more than 2300 years after Aristotle's death, he remains one of the most influential people who ever lived. Were his writings Cryptocurrency relevant? sure! Aristotle defined "good money" as durable, portable, divisible and intrinsic in value so we've gone from Gold, Silver, to the fiat currency. What is fiat currency? it's currency that a government has declared to be legal tender. (Investopedia: https://www.investopedia.com/terms/f/fiatmoney.asp) We then had the Financial crisis of 2007-2008 aka Global Financial Crisis and in 2009 Bitcoin , the first cryptocurrency, appeared, created by an unknown person using the alias Satoshi Nakamoto. What is a CryptoCurrency? it's a digital currency that uses cryptography for security. What is Cryptography? It's the art of writing or solving codes. This has evolved tremendously over time. We've gone from secret boiled egg hidden messages used to hide messages during the independence war to the Enigma machine to our current ciphertext techniques. The appearance of Bitcoin The two most widely adopted cryptocurrencies are Bitcoin and Ether, the currency that is used to power the Ethereum blockchain. What is a blockchain? it is a data structure that allows for the existence of an incorruptible and decentralized digital ledger. It is important to note that since it's a data structure, it can be used for many other things other than keeping track of the CryptoCurrency transaction ledger. The introduction of Bitcoin gave rise to many other cryptocurrencies and it's important to note that there are two types: coins and tokens, but what's the difference ? a coin has its own separate blockchain while tokens operate on top of a blockchain that facilitates the creation of decentralized applications. (Aziz) Thus far, we've defined what these concepts are, now the question is what gives these programs value? If we go by Aristotle's definition. A cryptocurrency is durable, portable, divisible, and it's intrinsic but it's not insured nor backed by anything of value other than public sentiment and perception. Can you use cryptocurrencies to purchase your morning Latte or buy your wife flowers? Not so much in the U.S., but Europeans use it to book hotels and pay for some expenses. On January 5th 2018, VISA said that they "recently terminated a single prepaid card issuer in Europe from our network for violating Visa's operating regulations. That issuer, WaveCrest, was required to close its Visa card products, some of which were linked to cryptocurrency wallets." This was a big problem yesterday, and goes to show that we are in a transition period where adoption is taking place. The word evolution comes to mind. Are we in a Bubble? In my honest opinion, Yes, all new emerging technologies tend to bubble up because it's very hard to calculate their intrinsic value using traditional methods, because it does not generate cashflows and yet may be incredibly valuable. A warning flag is the social contagion effect causing everyone to jump on the bandwagon to make a quick buck without fully understanding what they are doing and this may be inflating the price. If you stay our of the crypto market you will not make any money, but if you want to invest and profit, then make sure to keep money on the sidelines for when the bubble does pop so that you can invest it then. Just keep in mind that when the Dot Com bubble popped it took those companies years to regain their value and many of them perished. Something very similar will happen to the saturated market of currencies so play hard and play safe! |

(Investopedia: https://www.investopedia.com/terms/f/fiatmoney.asp)\n\nWe then had the Financial crisis of 2007-2008 aka Global Financial Crisis and in 2009 Bitcoin , the first cryptocurrency, appeared, created by an unknown person using the alias Satoshi Nakamoto.\n\n\nWhat is a CryptoCurrency? it's a digital currency that uses cryptography for security.\nWhat is Cryptography? It's the art of writing or solving codes. This has evolved tremendously over time. We've gone from secret boiled egg hidden messages used to hide messages during the independence war to the Enigma machine to our current ciphertext techniques.\n\nThe appearance of Bitcoin The two most widely adopted cryptocurrencies are Bitcoin and Ether, the currency that is used to power the Ethereum blockchain.\n\n\nWhat is a blockchain? it is a data structure that allows for the existence of an incorruptible and decentralized digital ledger. It is important to note that since it's a data structure, it can be used for many other things other than keeping track of the CryptoCurrency transaction ledger.\n\n\nThe introduction of Bitcoin gave rise to many other cryptocurrencies and it's important to note that there are two types: coins and tokens, but what's the difference ? a coin has its own separate blockchain while tokens operate on top of a blockchain that facilitates the creation of decentralized applications. (Aziz)\nThus far, we've defined what these concepts are, now the question is what gives these programs value? If we go by Aristotle's definition. A cryptocurrency is durable, portable, divisible, and it's intrinsic but it's not insured nor backed by anything of value other than public sentiment and perception. Can you use cryptocurrencies to purchase your morning Latte or buy your wife flowers? Not so much in the U.S., but Europeans use it to book hotels and pay for some expenses. On January 5th 2018, VISA said that they \"recently terminated a single prepaid card issuer in Europe from our network for violating Visa's operating regulations. That issuer, WaveCrest, was required to close its Visa card products, some of which were linked to cryptocurrency wallets.\" This was a big problem yesterday, and goes to show that we are in a transition period where adoption is taking place. The word evolution comes to mind.\nAre we in a Bubble? In my honest opinion, Yes, all new emerging technologies tend to bubble up because it's very hard to calculate their intrinsic value using traditional methods, because it does not generate cashflows and yet may be incredibly valuable. A warning flag is the social contagion effect causing everyone to jump on the bandwagon to make a quick buck without fully understanding what they are doing and this may be inflating the price. \nIf you stay our of the crypto market you will not make any money, but if you want to invest and profit, then make sure to keep money on the sidelines for when the bubble does pop so that you can invest it then. Just keep in mind that when the Dot Com bubble popped it took those companies years to regain their value and many of them perished. Something very similar will happen to the saturated market of currencies so play hard and play safe!",
