| title | Schizophrenia and Religion |
| body | This Psychology research paper is about, what is in fact, considered to be a mental disorder in the science community. Although this is a controversial topic to the point that it is almost taboo, that does not take away the science behind the human condition that billions of people have for religion. Religions effect on the brain and its ability to stifle human curiosity by filling in the gaps with a god is a psychology topic in regard to human development. In reference to nature vs nurture in psychology, religion falls under the nurture umbrella; it is something that is taught and learned, it is not something that is already inherently built in, and therefore is not natural. There are many psychological studies documenting how a person is raised; what they are taught to be right and wrong or appropriate and inappropriate and how it becomes ingrained into that person’s belief system. Recently in ECPI psychology class PSY105-DHM, a true story was discussed about a girl who was shown love from her father through sexual relations. This girl grew up believing that was a normal and appropriate way to show love and affection. That same girl later had a child of her own who she also had sexual relations with. She did not think she was doing anything inappropriate. Through her eyes, society was wrong and her way of showing love was appropriate. It is the mental illness pedophilia when a person is attracted to people who are prepubescent, and it is incest when it is within the same family. How someone is raised does affect how they mature and how they operate in society. If a child is not put into social situations at a young age they could turn into someone who is shy, scared, or timid in social settings and can be diagnosed with social anxiety disorder, also known as social phobia. A person who experiences trauma as a child or as an adult, can be diagnosed with PTSD if they continue to be affected long after the incident occurred. This also goes for a child who is taught that they are born sinners and that they will spend eternity in hell unless they believe in god, live by god’s rules, worship this god, and pass on the teachings of this god through religion. When a person is raised in such a way but you take the word religion out of the equation there is no longer the taboo dilemma of being worried about offending someone because of their beliefs. (Hearing Voices; Mental Health Foundation, nd), when someone feels something that is not there, hears voices that are not present, and sees something that does not exist, that person has the symptoms of schizophrenia. As soon as we take all of those symptoms and throw religion back into the mix, suddenly it is taboo to diagnose this as anything other than faith. When someone is raised with certain beliefs and those beliefs are enforced through fear, through ritual, through tradition, and through reward, that produces a psychological condition that makes it very hard for someone to allow any conflicting information to sway those beliefs. When someone is raised in such a way it does not matter how much evidence is prepared and presented; like the girl who thought it was appropriate to show love through sexual relations due to the way she was raised, or a child who is not introduced to social activities grows up to have social anxiety. When someone is raised to believe in something simply on faith and there is no supporting evidence that it exists, they will think that anyone who tells them it probably doesn’t exist, must be wrong. This statement is supported in the documentary (The Unbelievers, 2013). This is not a condition of a specific type of religion, this goes for any religion or anything that is taught and reinforced through the years that a person is growing to maturity. This is why most religious people believe that their religion is the correct religion. Even though there is vast evidence provided through science and discovery that there are billions of galaxies in the universe, with billions of stars, and even more planets, many religions teach that our little planet in our little solar system, with our one specific human species will be blessed with eternal life (after death) through faith in a god, so long as their very specific religion is the correct one. Religion attempts to teach that the words found in whichever holy book you choose are not to be questioned; doing so will result in eternal damnation. This is reflective on the nurture aspect of psychology; teaching a person at an early age to fear ideas or doubts of particular teachings. The need for religion is partly because we are aware of our own mortality, and that our time here on earth is limited. Religion is one of the ways that humans are able to find it in themselves to accept the loss of a loved one. It’s easier to let go of someone you love so dearly if you are convinced that they are in a better place and that you will see them again someday. In science on a molecular level they do still exist, and we all are as old as the universe; per (Neil deGrasse Tyson, Cosmos, 2014) “We are all stardust.” When we die we will still exist just as we did before we were born, as atoms, particles, molecules, and biology that will decay, change, or be consumed by and become something else. The human need for religion is that of not only the teachings that are learned but also due to the need to believe that we have a purpose. For most people if they do not believe something is in store for them after their life here on earth, they will often ask “than what is the point?” Unlike most species that are completely unaware of how temporary their time is and are oblivious to their mortality, we humans know that our clock is ticking. (Dawkins, R. The God Delusion, 2006) brings up several valid points throughout his book that support this.. If it wasn’t for billions of people being raised and indoctrinated into religion from childhood this wouldn’t be such a “walk on egg shells” topic. There is an article about a man who had an accident at birth (Who was David Reimer, 2010). It was assumed that since the damage to his penis was so severe and it was removed that the family should raise David as a girl. The family treated and raised David as a girl for several years. The doctor and the mother thought it was best for David to think he was a girl because of the injury. They thought they were doing the right thing and looking out for his best interest. He was being brainwashed, this is abuse. After several years of identity issues, relationship problems with his brother and his love interest, David eventually committed suicide. He discovered that everything he was taught about himself was a lie and although at first he seemed to feel relief from finding out the truth, he eventually took his own life. On a different scale this isn’t any different from telling your kids the Easter bunny is real, Santa Clause is real, Thor is real, the tooth fairy is real, Jesus is the son of God who is also real! Nearly everything listed are examples of fairy tales. Thor along with other Greek gods that are now considered mythical, were once believed in as real gods. It is a mental condition when you have a crippling fear of germs (OCD). It is a mental condition when someone lives their life a certain way because they were proselytized into believing they would spend an eternity in hell if they didn’t, before they had the ability to make the choice for themselves. The Christian Religion would have you believe that we received our morals through the stories in the bible and more specifically the 10 commandments. (msn.com, 2015) The Muslim Religion teaches believers that if someone insults or pokes fun at the profit Mohamed they are the infidel and the appropriate retaliation for this offense is death. It is a mental disorder when someone decides to shoot several rounds of ammo into the audience at a Batman premiere, but if they are yelling “God is Great” while doing it than it’s considered a religious issue and an act of terror. (Truth Be Known, nd.) It is a mental disorder when someone thinks they hear voices that tell them to buy a gun, drive onto a military installation, and proceed to shoot and kill as many people as they can until they themselves are killed. If that same person was yelling “God is Great” while shooting dozens of people than there is suddenly only religious conflict being considered. “At the end of the 19th century Jean Charcot and his star pupil Sigmund Freud, linked religion with hysteria and neurosis” (Koenig, H. 2008). If someone believes that Mickey Mouse will grant them eternal life in Disney Land as a reward for living a certain way they would be diagnosed as clinically insane. Change Mickey Mouse to Jesus, or Allah, and change Disney Land to Heaven and it becomes widely accepted as a completely normal belief. I picked this topic not because I want to offend people who are religious and I understand that not offending someone is a difficult task when doing research on the link between religion and schizophrenia. Being raised in a very religious household and only through my own love for learning, excitement fed through discoveries made due to a deep curiosity, I have grown out of the religious beliefs that I once held very deeply. It is certainly brainwashing when someone knows that 2+2 = 4 but because they were raised that 2+2 = 5 that even if they add it up and do not get 5 they still say it’s 5, is clearly a state of denial and mental illness. To me that’s what religion is. Through the research I have done, the papers I have read, the sites I have visited, the books written by the likes of Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Bill Nye, Neil de Grasse Tyson, Stephen Hawking, Sam Harris and many others, all provide extensive evidence that directly conflicts with the teachings in just about every “holy book” that has ever existed. Even with mountains of evidence presented, millions of religious people will deny all this evidence and only accept what doesn’t conflict with their faith. I take a chance by choosing this illness as my research paper because I think it’s important to raise awareness of how many millions have been killed over centuries in the name of religion but it’s only a small handful in comparison that commit murder without religious attachment that have been deemed mentally ill. Is it not crazy when a person will wrap bomb vests onto children, trick them into approaching American troops, and then blow them up if they get close enough before getting shot? This puts the troops in a position where they have to stop the child with a bullet before the child and others are killed from the explosion. This research paper is not an attempt to say that although many aspects of Religion are inherently bad, and many of the claims people make to religion are the same as the symptoms of schizophrenia, but the bad greatly overshadows the good. There are plenty of groups, volunteers, committees, and generous people in the world that are Secular, and do not carry all the negative baggage of religion to find the morals to be good people. When someone constantly finds themselves adjusting the “meaning” and “interpretation” of their “good book” in order to fit within today’s ever-changing world, who is brainwashed? Is it not brainwashing when you look at cultures and religions all over the world and you see that certain religions are heavier in particular regions of the world? Clearly this is representative of how religion is taught, and over the years and around the globe the story changes. If I tell you a story and that story gets told from one person to the next until it makes it around the globe, due to human error, and human nature to exaggerate or modify stories, it would probably not even resemble the story I told by the time it makes it all the way back to me. If you are an American Christian you were very likely raised a certain way for as far back as you can remember. If you were born in India in the same way you would be of a completely different religion. Does this not remove the ability or at least make the ability to make an intelligent, educated choice of what you believe in more difficult? (http://www.bible-knowledge.com/adam-and-eve/, nd.) Do I have a mental disorder if I think the world is flat, that I am the son of God, that I can walk on water, turn water into wine, understand a talking snake, believe my companion was made from my rib, or that the only way to eternal life is to worship the Flying spaghetti monster? Would everything I just stated have been completely believable and considered the speaking of a mentally stable individual if I had put God in place of “Flying spaghetti monster”, or maybe if this paper was being published 2015 years ago, or maybe if I wasn’t saying I could do those things but I simply believed someone else witnessed all of those things? If someone today says they are a profit of god, they are labeled by most as crazy, if someone today said they did not have sex and that their child is one of immaculate conception, no one would believe them. Several of the resources I have found would label religious people as delusional, and even mentally unstable. If a topic is so highly controversial that there hasn’t been an official diagnosis made to present it as a disorder, does that mean there isn’t a mental issue that could be related to believing something blindly even when everything someone learns tells them it’s wrong? Is it not an issue of mental illness or psychology of the brain when someone would commit murder if someone insults something that they themselves have never seen, never touched, and have only read about, for example the late Charlie Hebdo’s cartoons? Would everything I just stated have been completely believable and considered the speaking of a mentally stable individual if I had put God in place of “Flying spaghetti monster”, or maybe if this paper was being published 2015 years ago, or maybe if I wasn’t saying I could do those things but I simply believed someone else witnessed all of those things?\nIf someone today says they are a profit of god, they are labeled by most as crazy, if someone today said they did not have sex and that their child is one of immaculate conception, no one would believe them. Is it not an issue of mental illness or psychology of the brain when someone would commit murder if someone insults something that they themselves have never seen, never touched, and have only read about, for example the late Charlie Hebdo’s cartoons?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReferences\nBenhamou, L. | title | Free Will... is not a choice |
| body | Abstract Free will in this paper is presented as an illusion with emphasis on the factors that contribute to the choices we make. The term free will comes with religious connotations in many cultures; those who do not relate free will to a reward granted to them by the god of their faith still tend to believe they have free will. This paper provides examples and misconceptions such as the ability to make a choice equating to free will. People, religious or not, seem to have an extraordinarily hard time accepting, or even considering, that maybe they do not have free will; that all the choices, they feel, they are making without constraints can actually be measured, determined, and attributed to their genetics, and life experiences. This paper will also exploit the ideas that many people have who claim to embrace science and yet are unwilling to even acknowledge that free will could, quite simply, be a watered-down way of defining human intelligence. The history of free will dates back to the origins of religion, has been widely debated in a philosophical sense for many years, is believed to be real to people of nearly all faiths, and even those who do not have faith in a religion. Similar to that of religion, free will is hard to prove or disprove, unless you are a neuroscientist, who also have a difficult time disproving the existence of free will altogether. . Free Will Is Not A Choice According to most theologies, free will is granted to humans by an all knowing, omniscient being; the notion of free will seems contradicted by the principle that a divine creator already knows everything that will happen and therefore one’s fate has already been determined. Outside of theology, free will is believed to be a phenomenon that allows us to make choices. Science, more specifically neuroscience (the study of the brain) explains that the choices we make can be determined, influenced, and even seen in the brain before we become consciously aware of the choice we are about to make. Through the explanation of how the physical brain works and our inability to control every thought we have, or how the thought impacts our decisions; we cannot possibly be the author of our thoughts, and are more accurately the recipient of our thoughts. Our thoughts directly impact the choices we are presented with and the decisions we make are influenced by a wide array of factors, many of which, are not readily available to our consciousness. Our mood affects how we act and the choices we make. The level of chemicals being produced in our body affects how we feel. There are times when we voluntarily interfere with the chemicals in our body by drinking alcohol, consuming caffeine, eating foods high in sugar, or taking drugs. All of these items directly impact the chemical balance in our bodies and while our body is trying to get the levels back to normal, they have an exponential impact on our decision making ability. An intense moment of fear, joy or sadness also causes of rush of chemicals throughout the body which can make it next to impossible to control our display of emotion. Do we have the free will to shut off sadness as soon as we decide we do not want to be sad? Try placing this as an option in front of all emotions, we do not have the free will, or “will power” to instantaneously decide which emotion we want to feel, when we want to feel it. We are more accurately a victim of our emotions. If we choose to take a substance that alters our state of mind, do we then dismiss the illusion of free will until the affects have subsided? Does a diabetic dismiss free will when they eat the same meal that someone else does but the diabetic has to take a shot to prevent them from going into shock? Does someone with ADHD not have free will, or do we dismiss free will to those who have ailments that can be explained? Even ingesting food that would normally not have an effect on you, if you have been without a meal for a long time, this will fill you with a surge of nourishment. This surge will fill you with energy, usually followed by a crash. These have all been examples of substances that affect how you feel which in turn greatly affects how you carry yourself. We cannot control our thoughts; on a chemical level, mental disorders are often linked to chemical imbalances, many of which are treatable with medication and therapy. A person who is bipolar will seem to be a completely different person as the pendulum swings from a high to a low, this is an extreme example but it is an example of how much our chemical make-up has to do with who we are, how we feel, and what we do. The physiology of the brain is very sensitive to the chemicals already in our body or that we put into our body. Our brain is constantly doing things for us that we are not consciously aware of, such as, processing information that does not make it to our conscious. If our brain brought everything to a level of awareness that it is constantly doing for us we wouldn’t be able to concentrate on our day to day life. We would instead be busy thinking of each blood cell we need to create, remind ourselves to breath, decide what we are going to remember and what not to remember. The way things taste to us is due to the chemical reaction the item has with our tongue and how those signals are sent to our brain. Somehow we all, as humans, have different likes and dislikes, even though our 5 senses have evolved to work in the same way. We all have different favorite foods, colors, activities, and hobbies. We can tell ourselves that we like what we like because we decided to, but if we’re really honest with ourselves can we say that we decided to love mushrooms, or maybe to hate mushrooms? As defined by (Oxford, n.d.), free will is “the power of acting without the constraint of necessity or fate; the ability to act at one’s own discretion.” This notion that we can make choices without constraint or fate is misleading. Even the smallest most insignificant choices we make have some kind of a consequence that impacts the choice we make. Acknowledging that we have the intelligence to predict the outcome of a choice is learned as our brains mature. It’s this learning process that allows us to make choices, to include mistakes, and learn which outcomes are pursuing. We then make the choices that we think will get us to the end goal, and we will have tendency to make many mistakes along the way; these mistakes play a huge role in the future choices we make. Per (Hawking, 2013), “science has shown that our brains are physical and that they operate by following the laws of sciences, not some agency outside of our body.” This is to say that free will is not a phenomenon or something granted to us, and is rather, a sum total of our collected intelligence through our life’s experiences that are processed through the physiological differences of each brain doing the processing. There is a worry about the world if free will didn’t exist that without free will would couldn’t differentiate between good and evil; in the view of (Harris, 2012), The reality of good and evil does not depend upon the existence of free will, because with or without free will, we can distinguish between suffering and happiness. With or without free will, a psychopath who enjoys killing children is different from a pediatric surgeon who enjoys saving them. Whatever the truth about free will, these distinctions are unmistakable and well worth caring about. To address the concern of those who feel evil would be perpetuated in the absence of free will; we live in a world where the vast majority of civilization believe in the existence of free will and yet there are countless observable acts of evil that occur each day. Through our scientific advancements and continued understanding of how the brain works, scientists such as (Nichols, 2011) have postulated, “that consciousness is a population of neurons firing in certain areas of the brain, no more and no less.” On that note, in regards to the parts of the brains attributed to consciousness, a person in a coma is someone who has likely experienced severe brain trauma. Their brain is still keeping them alive by creating new blood cells, as well as many other functions needed to keep a person alive. The person in the coma is unable to decide to wake up and unable to control the part of their brain that grants them consciousness. In the rare event that a person suddenly wakes up from a coma the doctors are able to observe the new activity in the brain before it reaches a point of consciousness for the patient. The person who is no longer in a coma was not able to make a conscious decision to finally wake up, this was achieved by the new brain activity that allowed for the event, and was completely out of the control of the patient. The state of consciousness is completely controlled by a person’s genetics, chemicals produced or ingested, and events that the brain observes and relays to the consciousness. The parents we have, the schools we go to, the friends we make, the failures and successes, the gains and losses, the relationships we build and the ones we lose, are all by in large out of our control. We can try to itemize the things we like and dislike by their attributes but the fact that we enjoy one thing over another comes from a force that is hard to explain and even harder to provide as a result of free will. If free will was not an illusion I would have been able to decide to love radishes because I knew I was going to have to eat them if they were included in my dinner; when I lost a loved one and felt terribly depressed for a time, I could have exercised free will and washed away the sadness; when something made me angry at a time when all I wanted was to feel joy I could have simply chosen to be joyful instead of upset; I could have made the choice to only fall for the girls who shared my feelings in return; I would only care about the things that make me happy, I would not care about the things that upset, or better yet I would choose to not allow upsetting things to upset me anymore. A more simple example of our brain taking over our conscious choice is to decide which hand we are going to open, left or right, we feel we are making the choice on our own but a neuroscientist would be able to tell us which hand we were going to open before we even knew which hand it would be. Following this same premise, not that you would want to, but, if you were to put your hand on a scolding hot frying pan, your brain would remove your hand from the pan through reflex which is not a conscious choice. From an evolutionary perspective as per (Dennett, 2012), “for billions of years on this planet there was life, but no free will.” He continues to explain that if free will does exist, it has to do with evolutionary biology and not something granted from an outside agent. The brain has been built for survival through. Some of the things that our brain can pick up without entering our consciousness are easily observed while someone is sleeping. A fun exercise would be to softly touch the foot of someone sleeping, they will move their foot. If you continue to tickle them they will continue to respond unconsciously aware of it. Eventually if the brain receives enough stimulus it will wake the person up to alert them of what is happening, allowing them to get to safety if needed. The person didn’t make a conscious choice to wake up or acknowledge what is happening, the brain does this for them just as it does thousands of times a day while they are awake; only bringing what is deemed essential, to the level of consciousness. It’s hard to prove something doesn’t exist when it can’t be proven to exist. For this reason I attempt to refute the existence of free will from a scientific point of view instead of a philosophical point of view. Most theologies teach free will as a gift from god, an ability granted to us in which we can do good or do evil. This claim cannot be proven and therefore cannot be disproved. If free will was proved to be an illusion and nothing other than a by-product of intelligence, the very foundation of many religions would crumble, and how we obtain our morals would become even harder to give credit to that of ancient text instead of a society that continues to learn how to better function as it matures. |

| title | Unstoppable |
| body | Unstoppable Ten years ago I was extremely motivated, specifically by what I could track and measure. At that time in my life I spent countless hours in the gym, on the track, and at the pool. I would have my workouts, my meals, and my rest periods all planned out for a month at a time. I was meticulous about tracking every single calorie consumed and each calorie burned. I created spreadsheets to track every detail of each work out. Calories tracked on the spreadsheet were broken down into their macronutrients. I could easily tell how much protein, fat, and carbohydrates I was getting just by reviewing my entries. Not once did I deviate from my workout routine. I spent enough time each week to cover the hours of a full time job. I felt unstoppable and I was in the best shape of my life. A scout in Waikiki had even prospected me to do fitness modeling. Posing for pictures was definitely not my goal but I did enjoy the recognition for all the sweat and time I had invested. The modeling caused a heightened awareness of body image. I was started to become aware of, at the time, my many moles and freckles. The military didn’t offer medical services for cosmetic purposes alone, but I decided to make the appointment anyway. Since I was there they examined me anyway. “We aren’t able to remove any of these for cosmetic purposes, but you do have one that concerns me that I can remove today,” the doctor said. I asked the doctor, “What’s wrong with this one, and how long until I will know the results?” “The mole is of an irregular shape and has multiple colors to it. You will have the results within two weeks,” the doctor said. The mole was removed and sent for biopsy that day. Two weeks soared by. I hadn’t even thought about the biopsy until I received a startling phone call. I was told to get to the hospital as soon as possible. This was one of those moments when someone remembers where they were and what they were doing, when they heard the news. I would compare that moment to asking someone where they were on 9/11. The day I received the call I was at work in beautiful Hawaii. It was 80 degrees, and partly cloudy with a chance of rain that day. I just finished my pre-workout shake, the anticipation to go to the gym was growing. The excitement for working out was brief, the phone rang and the news I was given was daunting. It felt as though my life was flashing before my eyes, I felt helpless. That day’s forecast was just like every other day in Hawaii except for that phone call. The ominous news I was given was that I had cancer, malignant melanoma to be exact. Not one person at work knew what to say to me, they just looked at me and said “sorry” and “I’m sure you’ll be okay” or “good luck with everything.” The comments felt sincere and empty at the same time. I knew when I left, work would go on as usual for everyone else. They had to focus on the mission and my mission suddenly changed from excelling in the Air Force, continuing my education, and being physically fit, to frantically hoping I would see tomorrow and the day after that. I went from feeling unstoppable to being short of breath. I thought cancer was something that happened to other people, it would never happen to me. I recall thinking, “How could someone get cancer when they are in the best shape of their life?” I vividly remember my next dermatology appointment. I had to go through another excision to remove more tissue. They made me wait for what seemed like an eternity in a room that felt smaller than my closet at home. With each passing minute, I grew more anxious and terrified. I thought to myself “how can they leave me in here for so long, they must be out to lunch, I only have cancer!” While waiting for them to return, I read every pamphlet in the room. One of the pamphlets stated that over 85% of Americans will develop some kind of cancer in their lifetime. I couldn’t believe the percentage but little did I know that I would be diagnosed with skin cancer 3 more times by the age of 35 and probably more to follow. Being vain is not a trait I would normally pride myself with, however in that moment, I was fortunate that vanity was a byproduct of getting into such great shape. It was my pursuit of perfection that led me to the dermatologist to be examined. I learned that many melanomas go unnoticed and by the time someone discovers that they have melanoma, it’s usually too late. Melanoma is the most deadly and fastest spreading cancer, the mortality rate rises dramatically unless it’s caught in the early stages. My cancer was caught before it had a chance to spread through the layers of skin to the nearest lymph node. The survival rate is 95% for melanoma patients who discover this cancer at the same stage I did. Once the cancer makes it to the blood stream and to the nearest lymph node, the chances for survival diminish. The lymphatic system is supposed rid our bodies of foreign objects. When it comes to melanoma, the lymphatic system becomes a super highway for the cancer. I was told I would have to see a dermatologist every six months for the rest of my life. To this day I have had a total of 18 surgeries to remove suspected cancers, 4 of which came back positive and required additional excisions. Even as I tell this story I have stitches in my back from a recent biopsy that came back positive for melanoma. I have learned over the past seven years and several cancer scares, that life will go on for everyone else and that it must go on for me. I’m certainly not unstoppable like I once thought I was. In an effort to not say an overused cliché like YOLO, which I think many people use as a way to justify and excuse poor behavior. I adhere to the mantra that “I should live like today will be my last but plan like tomorrow will never pass.” When I was first diagnosed with cancer it felt as if the sky was falling and my world was fading. Today when I receive a melanoma diagnosis, it’s just another day. There are many things that can take a life and cancer is just one of them. Until that day I’ll keep moving, learning, loving, and experiencing life the best way I know how. |

"title": "Unstoppable",
"body": "Unstoppable\n\nTen years ago I was extremely motivated, specifically by what I could track and measure. I could easily tell how much protein, fat, and carbohydrates I was getting just by reviewing my entries.\n\nNot once did I deviate from my workout routine. I was started to become aware of, at the time, my many moles and freckles.\n\nThe military didn’t offer medical services for cosmetic purposes alone, but I decided to make the appointment anyway. Since I was there they examined me anyway.\n “We aren’t able to remove any of these for cosmetic purposes, but you do have one that concerns me that I can remove today,” the doctor said.\n I asked the doctor, “What’s wrong with this one, and how long until I will know the results?”\n “The mole is of an irregular shape and has multiple colors to it. You will have the results within two weeks,” the doctor said.\nThe mole was removed and sent for biopsy that day. Two weeks soared by. I hadn’t even thought about the biopsy until I received a startling phone call. I was told to get to the hospital as soon as possible.\n\nThis was one of those moments when someone remembers where they were and what they were doing, when they heard the news. \n\nNot one person at work knew what to say to me, they just looked at me and said “sorry” and “I’m sure you’ll be okay” or “good luck with everything.” The comments felt sincere and empty at the same time. I recall thinking, “How could someone get cancer when they are in the best shape of their life?”\n\nI vividly remember my next dermatology appointment. I couldn’t believe the percentage but little did I know that I would be diagnosed with skin cancer 3 more times by the age of 35 and probably more to follow.\n\nBeing vain is not a trait I would normally pride myself with, however in that moment, I was fortunate that vanity was a byproduct of getting into such great shape. It was my pursuit of perfection that led me to the dermatologist to be examined. I learned that many melanomas go unnoticed and by the time someone discovers that they have melanoma, it’s usually too late. | title | Death and Dignity - a philosophical outline |
| body | I. Are we really free? a. Are you free when you are told that you are going to die soon, but there is a law in place that prevents you from deciding how you leave this earth? b. Are we free if a politician, religious group, or hospital is able to decide our fate for us? c. In the United States we celebrate our freedom to include our freedom of religion, which also means freedom from religion. d. Are we really practicing these freedoms if we vote against someone else who is terminally ill from choosing how they die? e. If a terminally ill person who is mentally competent decides they want to die peacefully, they aren’t hurting anyone else. One could argue they are saving those who love them from also experiencing prolonged suffering from watching their health slowly decline until death. II. Britney Maynard at the age of 29 took her own life, legally, on Nov 1st 2014. a. When she was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer her world fell apart. b. She explored all treatment options but at this time there is no treatment that could save her. c. After finding out she only had about 6 months to live she researched some more. d. Once she accepted her fate, her research shifted from how to beat the cancer to how will she be able to die peacefully. III. Society, stigma, and death a. I think that society has a stigma towards assisted death due to the way we are raised. b. If you are in the military or a veteran, you have more than likely received training to see the signs of someone who is depressed and may take their own life. c. We are taught that suicide is something that should be prevented at all costs, it’s only when we experience the prolonged suffering of a loved one or hear about it that we may consider unique situations where it is justified. IV. A question of ethics, morals, and is it really test? a. According to deathpenalityinfo.org there are 32 states with the death penalty b. I find it hard to believe on ethical or moral grounds for so many states to put criminals to death, but deny the choice peaceful death to someone who is terminally ill and mentally competent. c. We will all die, it’s inevitable. Some people will pass peacefully, some will pass while enduring extraordinary pain and suffering. d. Regardless of someone else’s beliefs, those personal beliefs should not be passed onto those who do not share them. V. Britney had a peaceful death, no one else was harmed. a. She had to go through great lengths to have a peaceful death b. She had to obtain an apartment, a driver’s license, register to vote, and get a new team of doctors in Oregon just so she could have the option of a peaceful death. c. She is one of the few that had enough funds to make that move and take those steps in time to have a peaceful death. VI. What Britney wanted to avoid and what I have witnessed first-hand are one in the same. a. Britney and patients like her, with medical aid will only have a prolonged death that includes several severe symptoms. b. The options outside of death with dignity would be provided by hospice. c. Hospice’s goal is to make you as comfortable as possible. d. When the symptoms reach an extremely severe stage the patient is given pain killers, narcotics and muscle relaxers. e. The dose of these medications are continually increased to ensure comfort. The patient goes from someone who is consciously aware of their surroundings to being so drugged that they can’t tell the difference between a tissue and the sleeve of someone’s shirt. f. Eventually they are under the influence of such a high amount of drugs that they are in or near a comatose state. This is not prolonging life, it is only prolonging death, death is something that most people would want to be swift, and as pain free as possible. References choices, c. a. | body | Really the only thing I like about BitcoinCash is that the majority of its code is Bitcoin code. In my post, where I (cringe behind the keyboard) as I type out a compliment for BCH, was really only if comparing it to all other crypto projects and forks of bitcoin. However, and I may lose points for saying this, I think that BTG actually offers more in terms of decentralization and a secure blockchain, alternative to bitcoin due to being ASIC resistant. Thank you for checking out my article and commenting. I truly appreciate your inquiry and feedback. |

| title | What is BitcoinCash? |
| body | For starters BitcoinCash is not Bitcoin! BCash fans thanks for coming and for reading the first line! For the rest of you please continue. :) The purpose of the post is actually NOT to bash BitcoinCash, BCASH or BCH as a cryptocurrency and actually, as a fork of Bitcoin it is not inherently bad. I would actually argue that the code and the blockchain it uses is far superior than that of most other cryptocurrencies. Why? Because the best developers in Blockchain are or have contributed to the Bitcoin code. BitcoinCash is a replica of Bitcoin up to about a year ago from the time of this post. Why did BitcoinCash fork "away" from bitcoin? Please refer to the follow snipping from bitcoincash.com for that answer. There is nothing wrong with a cryptocurrency project copy/pasting code and then building or adding to it and making it their own. That's what open source is all about and one of the many things that makes Bitcoin so great. As you can see in the picture, BitcoinCash is a fork of Bitcoin that has a team of people, devs and miners who decided to create a new currency that would implement bigger blocks, which the Bitcoin Core team was not ready to implement. BitcoinCash claims to be a better version of Bitcoin. There's nothing wrong with making that claim. We can all believe what we want, however, at the end of the day, the market will decide. The Bitcoin whitepaper which states that Bitcoin is intended to be digital cash is a point that Roger Ver loves to drive home when he says his catch phrase, BitcoinCash is Bitcoin BCH. The BitcoinCash fork was and continues to be a contentious one. But why? There are so many forks of BItcoin that don't include so much non-stop drama. The primary reason why the BitcoinCash fork is the most unpleasant and is terrible for the decentralized financial revolution that cryptocurrency offers is because it misleads people. Even with a 200 billion dollar market cap and with the hype last year that almost drove the market cap to a trillion dollars, I think most of us know that we are still very early and that 99% (or so) of the worlds population haven't even dipped their toe in the world of crypto currency. If you just heard about Bitcoin and wanted to find out more what would you do? Well what most people do, I think anyway, is they see if there is a website. The easiest way and most common way to see if something you are looking for has a website is to type the name in your browser and add .com to it. So someone new would very likely end up at Bitcoin.com. If they had done a google, bing or yahoo search they would have at least had a fighting chance at reaching the real Bitcoin website Bitcoin.org. Luckily the real Bitcoin website is listed first when you do a search for it, however, the faux knock-off claiming to be Bitcoin is a close second or third in most cases. I'll list below several bitcoin forks with links to their websites. You be the judge as to why people are not a fan of BitcoinCash business practices and misleading marketing. Bitcoin forks (in no particular order) Litecoin - https://litecoin.org/ Ravencoin - https://ravencoin.org/ Bitcoin Gold - https://bitcoingold.org/ Super Bitcoin - http://superbtc.org/ Bitcoin Diamond - https://btcd.io/ Bitcoin Interest - https://www.bitcoininterest.io/ Then we have BitcoinCash.... BitcoinCash - https://www.bitcoin.com/ I will say that Roger Ver and Bitcoin.com have been getting better at their trickery to still mislead new people to Bitcoin into thinking Bitcoin Cash and Bitcoin "Core" are both Bitcoin but BitcoinCash stays true to the white paper blah blah blah... However, the fact of the matter is NEW people to Bitcoin end up at Bitcoin.com looking for information about Bitcoin NOT BitcoinCash. Roger is a smart business man and he has a vested interest in luring people to BCASH instead of Bitcoin. He sold most if not all his Bitcoin for BCASH (supposedly) so clearly he wants adoption to drive up the price. Roger loves debating people about BitcoinCash and Bitcoin "core." He has clever tactics and refuses to call Bitcoin just Bitcoin, he always adds "core" to it in an attempt to make BCASH and Bitcoin both sound as if they are both equally bitcoin just one is better as cash. If I skip over the countless scams in this space and just focus on the legitimate cryptocurrency projects, most if not all of them claim to add features that bitcoin doesn't have. They all strive to be better, faster, more secure or more private. These claims don't cause drama and if BitcoinCash didn't try to convince people that it is Bitcoin I am pretty sure this fork would not be such a drama filled stain on the cryptocurrency space. Roger Ver if you are ever able to take your emotion out of it, put your ego aside and if you ever read my little steemit post... please realize that you are doing more harm than good in regard to the rate of adoption of a decentralized money system that allows for a global currency that a government cannot stop or control. Also, I know you owned Bitcoin.com long before BitcoinCash was ever even thought of, for that I can empathize with you not being interested in changing your BItcoinCash website from bitcoin.com to something more accurate. However, it would be most honest if you at least redirected bitcoin.com traffic to a BItcoincash.com or .org site instead. Make sense? I know it does right!? Will you do it though? I won't hold my breath... I like BitcoinCash in regard to the code and the functionality it provides vs other cryptocurrencies. I just don't think its a good idea to mislead people into thinking it is Bitcoin. If BitcoinCash truly is better than Bitcoin, than the market will decide that naturally, and if you and every other BCASH fan truly thinks BitcoinCash is so exceptional you should be able to prop it up without trying to put down Bitcoin at the same time. That's all I have for BitcoinCash folks. If you liked this post please resteem, upvote and let me know so I'll be motivated to provide more of my thoughts on BItcoin, Crypto, Blockchain, investing, and the occasional rants too! |

| title | The most valuable information is free! |
| body | This blog post will most likely make references to crypto related topics, however, I think that the concept can be applied across many different scopes of interest, genres, financial markets, hobbies etc. At the end of the day, even Ivy League schools are providing free courses. How much are you willing to pay for a sheet of paper, ie. a diploma or a degree when objectively, you can obtain the same or better education for free? This is not to say that all paid for content, media, tips or educational material does not have value, however, in my humble opinion, the most successful people, I believe, have found ways to profit from their expertise by sharing value while at the same time not charging the consumer. I'm nearly 40 years old, I didn't get a formal higher education until I was in my mid 30s. I didn't suddenly buy into an old system that convinces the masses that the way to be successful is to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars and spend countless hours digesting formal lessons in a classroom. However, as a military veteran who contributed to the GI-Bill during my first year in the military, I decided not to let it go to waste. I mention that I eventually obtained a formal education, specifically a B.S. in Computer Science because that knowledge is a drop in the bucket compared to what I have learned just by being curious, driven and researching things on my own. That said I think knowledge is power and if you obtain knowledge best in a guided formal setting, DO THAT! If you are better self-taught DO THAT! If you are a sponge regardless of the educational environment DO IT ALL! Okay, with that out of the way, the most valuable content is free! Right? What I mean by that is a good provider doesn't need to charge the consumer. A youtuber, a blogger, an educator, even a salesman can provide a service or a product without charging the end user. It might take extra work and creativity to do it, however, it can be done. The problem is greed gets in the way. Look at Amazon, a trillion dollar company. Amazon would be a billion dollar company several times over if it didn't charge a prime membership, but... due to greed and the convenience they offer they can charge the consumer directly for access, the seller for the platform to sell their goods on and so many countless other revenue streams it would make your head spin. The best, most successful, highly influential personalities and corporations are those that provide a good, service, or platform without charging the consumers. Facebook is an example, sure you have to deal with adds and an invasion of privacy, but you're not paying money to use the platform. A better example is Linux! The creator of the Linux kernel is not a billionaire. He could be if he was greedy, however, he is highly successful and I am sure quite happy with his creation. If you are tech savvy or in the tech industry you probably know that the world runs on Linux and it's nearly 100% free! Another, much smaller, example is Professor Messer. In my career I am required to obtain a particular certification that he has created a plethora of content for on youtube. As well as self study, listening to his videos, certainly helped me to obtain the certification I was after. I didn't pay him anything. Now as a Cyber Security professional, nearly finished with a Masters in Cyber Security Technologies, (only because I have more GI-Bill left and I'm not going to let it go to waste) I find that 90% of graduate studies is done outside of the classroom anyway. You are expected to take a topic or lesson, do the research, come up with a hypothesis and publish a peer reviewed paper upon completion. Meanwhile, paying out the ass to go to class once a month to receive the next tid-bit of instruction. I feel for my classmates that are taking out loans for this! Once completed though, that sheet of paper, coupled with some related experience will lead to future CTOs, Directors of Security Programs and beyond. Again, I mention more of my formal education not for clout or because I am proud of it, but rather because of the following points I am about to share. Although I have learned a fair amount from this Masters program, I would argue I learned even more by watching DEFCON conferences, taking notes of technologies used to exploit vulnerabilities, penetration testing, information assurance, white hat, grey hat and black hat hacking, the tools used, where to get them and guides for configuring said tools. I would equate one DEFCON conference that includes taking notes and researching the topics to an entire Doctoral Program in Cyber Security. Guess what! I have downloaded every single DEFCON conference to date and continue to watch them for free and utilize the competencies obtained from that material still today. So how does someone work full time for free? They don't work for free silly! Instead they advise, they consult, they freelance, they sponsor, promote or collaborate. Don't quit your day job! If you have a full time job, doing the 9-5 grind, don't stop doing what brings you the income you need to provide for yourself or your family. There is an amazing rule that I live by... don't recall who I should give credit to since I didn't make this rule, I simply follow it. It's the 8-12 rule, adjust the time slightly as needed for your particular situation. If you work 9-5, you can spend from 5ish to 8ish with your family. From 8ish to 12ish you grind! Work on your side hustle! Do this daily with the same consistency you do with your 9-5 job and you will eventually find success, and maybe, just maybe your side hustle will become your primary source of income! There is a particular content creator I enjoy who believes in monetizing EVERYTHING! That might sound off putting at first but think about it. A few seconds or a minute of your time to watch an add before you enjoy several minutes of the content you came for is one heck of a bargain! Having banners on a website, or a small sponsor message at the beginning or the end of your content is a great way to help another person or company out and possibly facilitate a relationship that works for both of you, meanwhile your customer the consumer is still getting access to your content for free. I realize I am not mentioning things that are new or groundbreaking, heck these few suggestions have been used for ages, I mention them because I believe the world economy is changing. We want everything to be free, but we also don't want to give up our privacy for it. This is is why cryptocurrency, blockchain and Bitcoin are not just a speculative phenomenon where a few get rich while everyone else gets rekt! It's a revolution! Bitcoin has presented the world with an opportunity for true financial freedom. The ability to truly be your own bank and transact without requiring a third party's permission to do so. Blockchain and decentralized applications have already and will continue to create new ways for the world to have a global economy that cannot be controlled by a single powerful government or entity. We now have the ability to utilize social media platforms for free and without giving up our personal information. We don't need Facebook and we don't need to deal with targeted adds because our browser is storing data about us and websites we visit then market to us based on said data. Instead we can utilize the brave browser while using minds.com, steemit.com, bitchute.com, d.tube and many other social media platforms that allow us to communicate on a global scale and cannot be censored. Most importantly, we don't have to give up our personal information and our privacy stays as private as we want it to be. Utilizing all the mentioned platforms can provide multiple income streams in the form of cryptocurrency, but most of all they provide content creators with a bigger reach. They offer the ability to transfer wealth, both monetary and informational in a way that cannot be stopped and does not require a traditional bank or middle man to get involved. I recently created a video where I reviewed several crypto related youtubers. All of them provide content and do so in a way that creates revenue streams for them. One of them does a ton of sponsored reviews, however, he provides what appears to be unbiased and honest reviews that you can trust so his viewer count continues to increase which likely increases the fee he can charge to do sponsorship videos. Meanwhile, 100% of his content is free to the consumer! You might even win some money in the form of crypto for watching his content. Another example is a guy who produces videos that are full of gimmicks and sound effects and its all to get your interested while keeping your attention by entertaining you with all the buzz words and sounds. Meanwhile the substance is subpar. However, for a fee you can gain access to his "VIP" content. Maybe its worth it... but in this post I am providing examples as to how someone can provide quality content for free and if its that great, they will have such a huge following that they can create several revenue streams without charging the consumers. My assumption is, his paid for content is not worth it. Then there are others who create content, have a friendly demeanor, offer information "for free" build a community, without ever actually sharing any information that is of value. However, they are well spoken, good in front of a camera, slowly build a community and viola, they open a merch store, they sell clothes with mildly entertaining logos or sayings. The community the are building doesn't realize they are being herded. The content creator is slowly marketing more ideas to said community, selling them merch and eventually selling them hosting services to "help them." In this example, based on a real entity, I show how the actual product or service is provided is subpar, doesn't add much value, but slowly corals a community together that can then be marketed to. In a sense the "community" is the customer and the discord server is the store. It's clever but its not actually free and doesn't add much value. Holy shit! If you read this far... Thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to read my thoughts as I ramble on about my experience with learning valuable information throughout my life that was both free and paid for. Unfortunately it is the paid for experience that got me the sheet of paper which certainly helped me get the job that I have today, however, it was all the time I spent teaching myself outside of formal education that enabled me to be good at my job that the sheet of paper allowed me to get. Peace! |

"body": "This blog post will most likely make references to crypto related topics, however, I think that the concept can be applied across many different scopes of interest, genres, financial markets, hobbies etc. At the end of the day, even Ivy League schools are providing free courses. How much are you willing to pay for a sheet of paper, ie. a diploma or a degree when objectively, you can obtain the same or better education for free? \n\nThis is not to say that all paid for content, media, tips or educational material does not have value, however, in my humble opinion, the most successful people, I believe, have found ways to profit from their expertise by sharing value while at the same time not charging the consumer.\n\nI'm nearly 40 years old, I didn't get a formal higher education until I was in my mid 30s. I didn't suddenly buy into an old system that convinces the masses that the way to be successful is to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars and spend countless hours digesting formal lessons in a classroom. However, as a military veteran who contributed to the GI-Bill during my first year in the military, I decided not to let it go to waste.\n\nI mention that I eventually obtained a formal education, specifically a B.S. in Computer Science because that knowledge is a drop in the bucket compared to what I have learned just by being curious, driven and researching things on my own. That said I think knowledge is power and if you obtain knowledge best in a guided formal setting, DO THAT! If you are better self-taught DO THAT! If you are a sponge regardless of the educational environment DO IT ALL! \n\nOkay, with that out of the way, the most valuable content is free! Amazon would be a billion dollar company several times over if it didn't charge a prime membership, but... due to greed and the convenience they offer they can charge the consumer directly for access, the seller for the platform to sell their goods on and so many countless other revenue streams it would make your head spin.\n\nThe best, most successful, highly influential personalities and corporations are those that provide a good, service, or platform without charging the consumers. If you are tech savvy or in the tech industry you probably know that the world runs on Linux and it's nearly 100% free!\n\nAnother, much smaller, example is Professor Messer. In my career I am required to obtain a particular certification that he has created a plethora of content for on youtube. As well as self study, listening to his videos, certainly helped me to obtain the certification I was after. I didn't pay him anything.\n\nNow as a Cyber Security professional, nearly finished with a Masters in Cyber Security Technologies, (only because I have more GI-Bill left and I'm not going to let it go to waste) I find that 90% of graduate studies is done outside of the classroom anyway. You are expected to take a topic or lesson, do the research, come up with a hypothesis and publish a peer reviewed paper upon completion. Meanwhile, paying out the ass to go to class once a month to receive the next tid-bit of instruction. I feel for my classmates that are taking out loans for this! Once completed though, that sheet of paper, coupled with some related experience will lead to future CTOs, Directors of Security Programs and beyond.\n\nAgain, I mention more of my formal education not for clout or because I am proud of it, but rather because of the following points I am about to share. Guess what! I have downloaded every single DEFCON conference to date and continue to watch them for free and utilize the competencies obtained from that material still today.\n\nSo how does someone work full time for free? They don't work for free silly! Instead they advise, they consult, they freelance, they sponsor, promote or collaborate. Don't quit your day job! If you have a full time job, doing the 9-5 grind, don't stop doing what brings you the income you need to provide for yourself or your family. There is an amazing rule that I live by... don't recall who I should give credit to since I didn't make this rule, I simply follow it.
