titleBeliefs vs Knowledge and My Definition of Atheism
bodyAtheism, according to Oxford Dictionary, is defined as, “Disbelief or lack of belief in the existence of God or gods.” For the sake of simplicity, I will refer to “God or gods” as ‘God’. I think that this definition is incomplete. Yes, atheism is the opposite of theism, but the term atheism implies a lack of belief. This lack of belief implies a lack of understanding of the universe. It is as if the fundamental makeup of the universe, or interwoven into the very fabric of the existence of the universe is a God and that the atheist is blind to see it as such. Any rational mind would instantly realize that this is a preposterous notion for reasons I will explore later on. The truest and most complete definition of ‘atheism’ should be, in my opinion, “The rejection of a claim of the existence of a God or gods.” Note that the key word in this definition is ‘claim’, and the key words omitted are “disbelief” and “lack of belief”. Belief, lack of belief, or disbelief, play no part in atheism. There is a certain implication with the word ‘belief’, or ‘disbelief’, which implies delusion, of sorts, on the part of the believer or disbeliever. Let me explain. Belief is a human concept. A concept which is possible only in the mind. It has no basis in reality. In other words, belief in something is not knowledge of that thing. You either believe it to be true (a belief), or you know it to be true (Knowledge). It can’t be both. Now, if a persons belief is in fact true and the believer does not know why, then this belief is unjustified and cannot be considered knowledge. It may also be stated that knowledge is a justified belief. A belief must be justified to be considered knowledge. For example: A person is entitled to believe whatever they wish. This same person is also entitled to have very strong beliefs. Having stronger beliefs does not somehow make the beliefs truer. Belief is a firmly held opinion. A justified belief, is when a person believes something which has been demonstrated or proven to be true. But then one could ask, “Is this now still considered a belief or is it termed knowledge?” My answer to this question is, ”Once a belief has been justified, or, when knowledge has been acquired, belief ceases to exist.” A major problem with belief is that it taints the quest for knowledge. This is because the quest for knowledge, when initiated with a belief, becomes a quest for the confirmation of the belief and not the quest for knowledge. Religion is the perfect example of this. Beliefs of the faith are firmly held by the devoted. There is a pre-existing notion of the ways of the universe in the minds of the devoted due to the ‘explanations’ given by the doctrines of the faith. Therefore, any knowledge sought must conform to the doctrines of the faith otherwise it is considered to be wrong. If information gathered in the pursuit of knowledge does not conform to the belief system, then the information is rejected and discarded. This is not a method for acquiring knowledge. It is an attempt at the confirmation of the belief. Knowledge CANNOT be acquired with a pre-existing belief of the knowledge sought. In the real world, knowledge is not acquired in this manner. If one wishes to acquire knowledge, that person does not begin this quest with an unjustified belief. An unjustified belief is, in the mind of the believer, already true. The pursuit of knowledge always begins with curiosity. The asking of a simple question. A belief, on the other hand, is an answer. A belief is never held in the form of a question. A belief is only held when there is a lack of, or ignorance, of knowledge. It is an unsubstantiated explanation of an observation made by a person ignorant of the knowledge required to deduce an informed explanation. It is not unreasonable for the masses to vehemently hold on to their beliefs. Beliefs have been an integral part of human existence since the beginning of time. It was until the Ancient Greeks started to ask questions about their world that beliefs were the order of the day. The “knowledge” of the world was not researched and was not catalogued in libraries or on scrolls. They were firmly held in the minds of witch doctors, oracles, priests or priestesses and dished out as little chunks of knowledge to the masses. The Ancient Greeks thought that the sun was harnessed to a golden chariot, affectionately nicknamed The Sun Chariot, and hauled across the sky by four white horses guided by the god Helios (some say it was Apollo). At the time, this was common knowledge. Nowadays, we know that the sun does not travel across our sky, but it is the earth that orbits the sun. A lack of knowledge led the Greeks to fill in the blanks of their knowledge with what they believed to be true at the time. The difference between belief and knowledge is a debate which has raged on for thousands of years, since the times of Plato. “I reject your claim that God exists”. This sounds more rational, more grounded in reality. God is not the subject of the rejection. The rejection does not even consider whether the person making the claim “believes” that God exists or if that person “knows” that God exists. It does not matter. The claim of the existence of God is what is being rejected, not the degree of belief. Atheism refers to and stops at the claim. If there is no claim of the existence of God then there is no atheism. There would be no need for it. Let me explain why my definition of atheism is the correct one. The definition of atheism, according to the Oxford Dictionary, implies that the fundamental state of the universe includes the existence of a god. That somehow, interwoven into the very fabric of existence is a god, and that atheists refuse to believe it. Any rational mind would have no choice but to agree that this notion is absurd. We can only observe our universe from our very limited existential point of view. In saying that, we can only know what we are able to observe. It may be said that due to this limited ability to observe our universe, we may not have the capacity to observe God, who just happens to live outside of the observable universe. This is nonsense because of two reasons. The first being, how can this be known; and the second being, that this can be said about anything that the human mind can imagine. In other words, we can invent anything to exist outside of our observable universe. We will never know. This also happens to be a very convenient place to hide a god. No person, throughout all of human history, has ever made a verified or verifiable claim that they have “experienced” God. The only evidence they provide is of the anecdotal type. It has to be stated in the strongest terms, that this is not good enough. These anecdotes can never be verified. Marcello Truzzi said, “Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof.” No claim is more extraordinary than one which states that an omnipotent and omniscient supernatural being exists in our world and that it created, controls and supervises the universe and everything contained within it. This supernatural being, on top of overseeing the state of the universe, may have a personal relationship with every one of its devotees. It even makes time to answer their prayers and possibly make their dreams come true, providing they pray hard enough and make all the right sacrifices. All the while, non believers are unwittingly condemned to an eternity of damnation in the next life. This is going to need some unbelievably extraordinary proof, or evidence. To this day, not one shred of evidence has been presented that supports the claim of the existence of God or gods. Not one piece of evidence. Again, personal experiences, or anecdotal claims, are not evidence. They cannot be verified, repeated or witnessed by others. They may be the ramblings of a delusional devotee, or the fabricated tales of a liar. Until they are verified, than that’s all they can be. Fabricated tales. It would be more reasonable for me to claim that, a distant ancestor of mine was had a dinosaur as a pet. This dinosaur, in time, eventually died and the fossilised bone which has been passed on down through the generations of my ancestry is all I have to support this claim. This story has more evidence than any story regarding the existence of God or gods. I am able to present you with the fossilised dinosaur bone because fossilised dinosaur bones actually exist. What evidence can be provided supporting the existence of a god? Throughout the history of the existence of humans (which, by the way, is greater than 6000 years), there have been well over 4000 religions, most of which require the belief in a God or gods. If the existence of God, or gods, is a fundamental characteristic of the universe, then which one of these gods is it? They can’t be all true. Surely they cannot all exist. Which god is the Oxford Dictionary definition of atheism alluding to atheists rejecting? What is the chance of, firstly, gods being true, and second, that this true god is the one in which you believe? Furthermore, every single person who believes in God is an atheist to every God which came before this God. An atheist is more atheist than a theist by one God. These are the questions I urge you all to ask yourselves. Be skeptical. Ask questions and NEVER accept anything on faith. Always seek the truth. Always follow the evidence. Always ask for evidence and be skeptical about the evidence. In my next post, I will try to explain why faith is a poison to the rational mind.

"body": "Atheism, according to Oxford Dictionary, is defined as, \n\n“Disbelief or lack of belief in the existence of God or gods.”\n\nFor the sake of simplicity, I will refer to “God or gods” as ‘God’.\n\nI think that this definition is incomplete. Any rational mind would instantly realize that this is a preposterous notion for reasons I will explore later on.\n\nThe truest and most complete definition of ‘atheism’ should be, in my opinion,\n\n“The rejection of a claim of the existence of a God or gods.” \n\nNote that the key word in this definition is ‘claim’, and the key words omitted are “disbelief” and “lack of belief”. Belief, lack of belief, or disbelief, play no part in atheism. There is a certain implication with the word ‘belief’, or ‘disbelief’, which implies delusion, of sorts, on the part of the believer or disbeliever. Let me explain.\n\nBelief is a human concept. A belief must be justified to be considered knowledge.\n\nFor example: \n\nA person is entitled to believe whatever they wish. This same person is also entitled to have very strong beliefs. Having stronger beliefs does not somehow make the beliefs truer. Belief is a firmly held opinion. A justified belief, is when a person believes something which has been demonstrated or proven to be true. But then one could ask, “Is this now still considered a belief or is it termed knowledge?” My answer to this question is,\n”Once a belief has been justified, or, when knowledge has been acquired, belief ceases to exist.”\n\nA major problem with belief is that it taints the quest for knowledge. This is because the quest for knowledge, when initiated with a belief, becomes a quest for the confirmation of the belief and not the quest for knowledge.\n\nReligion is the perfect example of this. \n\nIn the real world, knowledge is not acquired in this manner. It is an unsubstantiated explanation of an observation made by a person ignorant of the knowledge required to deduce an informed explanation.\n\nIt is not unreasonable for the masses to vehemently hold on to their beliefs. Beliefs have been an integral part of human existence since the beginning of time. It was until the Ancient Greeks started to ask questions about their world that beliefs were the order of the day. The “knowledge” of the world was not researched and was not catalogued in libraries or on scrolls. They were firmly held in the minds of witch doctors, oracles, priests or priestesses and dished out as little chunks of knowledge to the masses.\n\n\nThe Ancient Greeks thought that the sun was harnessed to a golden chariot, affectionately nicknamed The Sun Chariot, and hauled across the sky by four white horses guided by the god Helios (some say it was Apollo). \n\nAt the time, this was common knowledge. Nowadays, we know that the sun does not travel across our sky, but it is the earth that orbits the sun. A lack of knowledge led the Greeks to fill in the blanks of their knowledge with what they believed to be true at the time. \n\nThe difference between belief and knowledge is a debate which has raged on for thousands of years, since the times of Plato.\n\n“I reject your claim that God exists”. \n\nThis sounds more rational, more grounded in reality. \n\nLet me explain why my definition of atheism is the correct one.\n\nThe definition of atheism, according to the Oxford Dictionary, implies that the fundamental state of the universe includes the existence of a god. This also happens to be a very convenient place to hide a god.\n\nNo person, throughout all of human history, has ever made a verified or verifiable claim that they have “experienced” God. The only evidence they provide is of the anecdotal type. It has to be stated in the strongest terms, that this is not good enough. These anecdotes can never be verified.\n\nMarcello Truzzi said, “Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof.” \n\nNo claim is more extraordinary than one which states that an omnipotent and omniscient supernatural being exists in our world and that it created, controls and supervises the universe and everything contained within it. This supernatural being, on top of overseeing the state of the universe, may have a personal relationship with every one of its devotees. It even makes time to answer their prayers and possibly make their dreams come true, providing they pray hard enough and make all the right sacrifices. All the while, non believers are unwittingly condemned to an eternity of damnation in the next life.\n\nThis is going to need some unbelievably extraordinary proof, or evidence. Fabricated tales.\n\nIt would be more reasonable for me to claim that, a distant ancestor of mine was had a dinosaur as a pet. This dinosaur, in time, eventually died and the fossilised bone which has been passed on down through the generations of my ancestry is all I have to support this claim. \n\nThis story has more evidence than any story regarding the existence of God or gods. I am able to present you with the fossilised dinosaur bone because fossilised dinosaur bones actually exist. What evidence can be provided supporting the existence of a god?\n\nThroughout the history of the existence of humans (which, by the way, is greater than 6000 years), there have been well over 4000 religions, most of which require the belief in a God or gods. An atheist is more atheist than a theist by one God.\n\nThese are the questions I urge you all to ask yourselves. Be skeptical. Ask questions and NEVER accept anything on faith. Always seek the truth. Always follow the evidence. Always ask for evidence and be skeptical about the evidence.\n\n\n\n\nIn my next post, I will try to explain why faith is a poison to the rational mind.",
