| body | Hello, and welcome back to the second installment of _Banknotes of the Juche type_, wherein I briefly discuss my inveterate, insatiable need to get North Korean banknotes. Or, other banknotes, which I will expound upon later. But let's get to the more rare aspect of banknotes issued there. There was a time before the planned redenomination, sometime between 2004 and 2009, of dropping a couple zeroes off of the notes and hopefully aligning the people's economy with that of the South Koreans. Unfortunately, with the crumbling infrastructure, intense sanctions and what-not, these came in the form of savings bonds. Multiple revolts happened in regards to this redenomination and initially most savings the Norks had were almost entirely wiped out. Of course, they thought of a way around it. Here are the extremely rare and often uncollected issues of _savings bond won_: The deep blue type and microprinting of this 5000-won note, the smallest in the series, give this away. On the back of each note is a standard form with terms of use. With translation, they read "_Credit rights can be purchased or transferred at any central banking institution. No reissue will be granted if this note is lost. This bond gains 4 percent per year on 1/1, which will be paid by the Central Bank._" On the reverse are also spaces for banks and holders to write their information down, date of issue and acceptance, and so forth. I did not take pictures of the backs because they all say the same thing, except with different colors. Again, most people won't even find these even if they do go to the isolated country - these are largely intra-bank deposits in savings bond form. No one has ever said anything about the 4% clause, and to be frank, 4% each year on these notes is negligible, if not as bad as interest here. The strange thing about these notes is that they come in only two sizes, and they are quite nonstandard for common denominations. Comparisons of the 5000-won note leave it as about as wide as the dollar bill, but about a finger's width short of reaching the length. The 5000 and 10000-won notes have the Chollima monument as a watermark. What were simple guilloche designs for the 5000 and 10000 have now given way to more diapered textures, nearly the same type as the 1992 1-won note. Each note also features a different square, close to the lower central feature. The green and peach colored 50,000 won note is arguably unusual but nothing like the final denomination . . . . . . the hundred-thousand (ten-myriad) won note, easily the highest denomination on the Korean peninsula. This example was unfortunately left in a bad area, and some of them contain permanent stains and smudges, even the purple ink having stains from other blocks. The five-myriad and ten-myriad notes contain the Juche Tower motif as watermarks, clearly a conscious design choice otherwise enforced. I neglected to mention in the first installment of this piece that all my notes are indeed genuine, I have checked for watermarks and closely examined all the microprinting. But there was an unconscious omission, the _types_ of watermarks being used. The 1- and 200-won note contain the Chollima monument, while the 100 and 5000-won banknote contain the Arch of Triumph monument. Once again, thanks for indulging my obsession, I'll have a post ready for your edification in a little while. |

"body": "Hello, and welcome back to the second installment of _Banknotes of the Juche type_, wherein I briefly discuss my inveterate, insatiable need to get North Korean banknotes. Or, other banknotes, which I will expound upon later. But let's get to the more rare aspect of banknotes issued there.\n\nThere was a time before the planned redenomination, sometime between 2004 and 2009, of dropping a couple zeroes off of the notes and hopefully aligning the people's economy with that of the South Koreans. Unfortunately, with the crumbling infrastructure, intense sanctions and what-not, these came in the form of savings bonds. Multiple revolts happened in regards to this redenomination and initially most savings the Norks had were almost entirely wiped out. Of course, they thought of a way around it. Here are the extremely rare and often uncollected issues of _savings bond won_:\n\n\n\nThe deep blue type and microprinting of this 5000-won note, the smallest in the series, give this away. On the back of each note is a standard form with terms of use. \nWith translation, they read \"_Credit rights can be purchased or transferred at any central banking institution. No reissue will be granted if this note is lost. This bond gains 4 percent per year on 1/1, which will be paid by the Central Bank._\"\nOn the reverse are also spaces for banks and holders to write their information down, date of issue and acceptance, and so forth. I did not take pictures of the backs because they all say the same thing, except with different colors. \nAgain, most people won't even find these even if they do go to the isolated country - these are largely intra-bank deposits in savings bond form. No one has ever said anything about the 4% clause, and to be frank, 4% each year on these notes is negligible, if not as bad as interest here.\n\n\n\nThe strange thing about these notes is that they come in only two sizes, and they are quite nonstandard for common denominations. Comparisons of the 5000-won note leave it as about as wide as the dollar bill, but about a finger's width short of reaching the length. The 5000 and 10000-won notes have the Chollima monument as a watermark.\n\n\n\nWhat were simple guilloche designs for the 5000 and 10000 have now given way to more diapered textures, nearly the same type as the 1992 1-won note. Each note also features a different square, close to the lower central feature. The green and peach colored 50,000 won note is arguably unusual but nothing like the final denomination . . . \n\n\n\n. . . the hundred-thousand (ten-myriad) won note, easily the highest denomination on the Korean peninsula. This example was unfortunately left in a bad area, and some of them contain permanent stains and smudges, even the purple ink having stains from other blocks. The five-myriad and ten-myriad notes contain the Juche Tower motif as watermarks, clearly a conscious design choice otherwise enforced.\n\nI neglected to mention in the first installment of this piece that all my notes are indeed genuine, I have checked for watermarks and closely examined all the microprinting. But there was an unconscious omission, the _types_ of watermarks being used. The 1- and 200-won note contain the Chollima monument, while the 100 and 5000-won banknote contain the Arch of Triumph monument. \n\nOnce again, thanks for indulging my obsession, I'll have a post ready for your edification in a little while.",

| body | So I was talking with the editor a while ago about how better to utilize this wonderful niche I've woefully underutilized. After having to figure out exactly which editor to use (*ahem*), I can now get back on track and do the one thing I sink money into on an almost-regular basis. Banknotes. Wonderful, curlicued banknotes. Well, not entirely. I tend to frown a little bit on being sold bent banknotes except where rarity is concerned. This site tends to lean into the "to hell with fiat currency/taxation" quite a bit, but if you'll chance the endeavor a little bit and come down this alleyway of financial fuckery, you might learn something. For the last few years, I've been slowly amassing a collection of banknotes that would rival anything my grandma's collection had on hand, and I really wish my pin wasn't stolen, but that is neither here nor there. _Someone_ will know what I am talking about, at least. For now, indulge me in the political arena that is "_BEST_" Korea, the "Democratic People's Republic of Korea", _*North Korea*_. A tenacious, angry, unrelenting mass of the nomenklatura unleashed on almost all of the Korean peninsula at one point, before being beaten to the Yalu river and then sloshing back to the DMZ, this country doesn't see very many dollars flow into it because of its political standpoint, resembling a mix of Korean Confucianism, Imperial Japanese militarism, Soviet and Chinese cultural and monetary influence, and autarky in the extreme. Yes, it once was called Juche, but recent and frequent reinterpretations of this leading but nebulous ideology have morphed it into a justification of a permanently-militarized war state with a crumbled economy that survives on statuemaking, crappy noodle restaurants, Chinese support and arms sales. But most people will never encounter their money. As a matter of fact, it's not even supposed to leave their country. For the longest time it was one of the few state-capitalist societies that relied on foreign exchange certificates, and even then these were split between 'socialist' and 'capitalist' countries. Socialist certificates were always red; capitalists, green. They took great pains to avoid putting pictures of the then-President of North Korea, for fear that proper reverence would not be shown to his portrait. These certificates can be found most commonly from various areas in a circulated fashion. Their earliest issues of banknotes from the Soviet period are unremarkable and only exist as a curiosity, being replaced with successive issues. 1947-series notes always feature farmers or people on tractors. Recently the NK government has been reproducing these notes but they do not quite match the originals. 1978 featured an overhaul, and while I've been meaning to get this series of notes, they come in _five_, yes, five different styles for each denomination. The oldest series of notes I have are from 1992, about the time Kim Il-sung handed over most of his day-to-day power to the appointed successor, Kim Jong-il. You'll pardon the size at which these pictures come about, the phone only does so much. This 1-won note I have often seen described as "woman with flowers", but that is not quite correct. The note itself is god damn small, but considering the purchasing power it's no surprise. The lady on the front is Hong Yong-hi, who starred in the often-repeated film _The Flower Girl_. On the reverse are the Diamond Mountains, which I didn't really get a picture of. This note was discontinued some time after 1998, and there is an overprint version that I have yet to find for a reasonable amount. The hundred-won note is a stark contrast but most notes of this type are the same size, unfailingly. The unimpressed look of Kim Il-sung dominates the note in a strange way. Surprisingly, the date 1992 does not have an era name appended to it, which didn't happen until after the mourning period of his death. As is custom in North Korea, the reverse of this series is his native home in Mangyeongdae. 100-won notes of this date and type have been long out of commission. I grabbed a fair amount of these at some cost. This two hundred-won note features the country's national flower, the magnolia, with half-number-filled hexagons. The note itself probably wouldn't pay for much, to be fair, but on closer inspection the security features are numerous. With printing outfits like what they have, it's no surprise. I was hoping to grab a set of 5-won notes (the lowest they use, and it's only for one area, their metro fare), but with all good and rare things, they disappear fast. I have enough of these but they won't be parted with for a long time. Finally, the 5000-won note of the later type, with the _Juche_ era appended. There isn't too much to say about this note except that the buying power of this note has probably declined since a failed redenomination attempt. Straps of these notes go for about thirty dollars or so, which renders each note probably 40 cents or so in tentative value. There are notes with higher amounts but I'm going to save those for a future post. The 5000-won note is the highest denomination currently used, but redesigns having happened six years ago, make these notes seem almost quaint. I'll be posting more of these and many, many other notes in the coming weeks, so please, stay tuned. _Banknotes, away!_ |

Nothing too terribly political to talk about unless you want me to talk about Mueller and Trump and all the various detritus milling about as if it was gliding through the fucking Matrix. As far as politics has gone nothing has really changed on my end. No new ideological dogma to expound upon, no new frontiers on which to embark and commit to praxis on, not just yet. <br> <br> Any attempt to get my life squared away as abovementioned has been met with issues. No, too expensive. How about California? Only if the crime rate is low. And it depends on which city, too. "We could go to Marysville!" The frustration is compounded further when I make some sort of inroad only to be rebuffed by the insolence of my roommate at present, who also draws residuals from being unable to work. A frail body that can barely handle bacon and alcohol, worn down from West Nile's 3-month-long assault and osteopenia. <br> <br> Sometimes it's the words I use. Nothing so exorbitant or flowery, but common words like "vet" and "allay", words with particular meaning, trip my roommate up, or cause a major tiff. | body | <html> <p>So for those of you who are wondering what this piece is going to be about, well, I could easily port an old discussion about socialism and its merits but that does not seem to be fitting or meshing well within my head. Religion is the easy piece to delve into. Let's be frank, a lot of people believe goofy shit for no reason. That's the human condition, it seems - we take in bullshit, and spew it back out. Is it any wonder why the government is garbage? No, it has nothing to do with monopoly of force. But there's one reason.<br> <br> People suck. No, no, you're reading wrong. <em>People</em> suck. Individuals are okay. And I have talked with many people throughout my life, perceived wonderful amounts of insight from them, learned about them, how they react, what they react to, what they shrug off, but when it comes to the big three - religion, politics and death - they all either shy away or get nose-to-nose with you. <br> <br> What do I believe in? That's a good question. There are tons of things I believe in, but I don't hold them too close to my heart. I believe in .... not wasting food if it can be helped, lending a hand to those who need it without wanting repayment, being left alone when I need to be... Universal healthcare, a strong safety net, and not having my country beholden to private interests for nefarious reasons. <em>I guess that makes me.... a dirty hippie.</em><br> <br> Why do people believe the things they do? Comfort? Weltanschauung? Logically sound reasons argued from particularly strong axioms that can be reasonably extended into daily life? Okay, the last one is a circumlocutory way of saying what goes into a belief, but that is the general basis. <br> <br> ...There are three big reasons why people believe the stranger stuff before the mundane - family influence, tradition, and "truth being stranger than fiction". The last one is huge. Most people get their religion handed to them directly after escaping the birth canal. Others get it handed to them by family later on. Some find their own, or make up their own. Rare are the parents who profess nothing and refrain from imprinting such things on their kids. But when it comes to truth being stranger than fiction, oh boy. Everything from UFO conventions to shamanic retreats with crystals, chakras and woo as far as the eye can determine visually. Fiction tries to wrest the driver's wheel from truth there, folks. Oh, and the blinkers are stuck on "hazard" mode. <br> <br> Asking <em>why</em> gives partial personal insight, and I learned this through watching videos on street epistemology. Asking people about their religious beliefs is the shields-up answer, because oftentimes people wrap their religion with their politics and their morals. The fish is permanently in the water, never to surface in that instance. But an honest hook tends to drag them out of the water onto your line. Asking about where their beliefs came from can provide more insight, insofar as you just carefully pick your words. <br> <br> The same can be said of politics: Why XYZ and not ABC? It ties into ethics, the subset of morals that are really personal as opposed to general. Individuals believe certain things for certain reasons. Far be it from me to really poke and prod, I think some ideas are quite silly. You may very well think I am silly for the things I believe, or worse, you might think me a <em>communist</em>, or a <em>godless heathen destined for the fires of Hell</em>, or something else. <br> <br> Some people believe crystals heal people, that colonic irrigation is beneficial, or that you can will someone to health by asking a deity to intercede on your behalf. <br> Some people believe the government takes out loans on you when you're born, and that the gold fringe on a flag in court means they are in a court of admiralty. <br> And perhaps there are tons of weasel words in this, but this rant isn't managed by Wikipedia, and it's certainly an unkempt rant by some dude behind a computer. <br> <br> I guess what it all comes down to is how people <em>act</em> on their beliefs. It's fine to hold a belief. But don't rub it on my face and tell me it smells great, because it likely doesn't. Realistically speaking, we should strive to know as many true things as possible, and believe as few false things as possible. It's the best way to cut down on bullshit, because, with what's all gone on in the last three years with the mainstream media, and the vocal minorities of the social justice warrior internet defense force, it's hard to make heads or tails of anything. People need to start separating the wheat from the chaff, when it comes to finding out the truth. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. And if the headline's a question, the answer is probably 'no'. If you're offended, good. People need to be offended, for the right motivations and the right outcomes. <br> With all that being said, don't run off to the crystal ball, stuff the tarot, put away that lottery ticket, and definitely don't pray for solutions to your problems. All those things <em>vide supra</em>.... won't help you determine truth and facts. Pick up a book, read some peer-reviewed articles, talk to people, and <em>maybe</em> party. <strong>It's up to you.</strong><br> <br> I swear I'll be back with more. Until then, I hope this tickled your literary fancy. <br> -Igarashi<br> </p> </html> |

I believe in .... not wasting food if it can be helped, lending a hand to those who need it without wanting repayment, being left alone when I need to be... Universal healthcare, a strong safety net, and not having my country beholden to private interests for nefarious reasons. <em>I guess that makes me.... a dirty hippie.</em><br>\n<br>\nWhy do people believe the things they do? Comfort? Weltanschauung? Logically sound reasons argued from particularly strong axioms that can be reasonably extended into daily life? Okay, the last one is a circumlocutory way of saying what goes into a belief, but that is the general basis. <br>\n<br>\n...There are three big reasons why people believe the stranger stuff before the mundane - family influence, tradition, and \"truth being stranger than fiction\". Oh, and the blinkers are stuck on \"hazard\" mode. <br>\n<br>\nAsking <em>why</em> gives partial personal insight, and I learned this through watching videos on street epistemology. <br>\n<br>\nThe same can be said of politics: Why XYZ and not ABC? It ties into ethics, the subset of morals that are really personal as opposed to general. Individuals believe certain things for certain reasons. Far be it from me to really poke and prod, I think some ideas are quite silly. You may very well think I am silly for the things I believe, or worse, you might think me a <em>communist</em>, or a <em>godless heathen destined for the fires of Hell</em>, or something else. <br>\n<br>\nSome people believe crystals heal people, that colonic irrigation is beneficial, or that you can will someone to health by asking a deity to intercede on your behalf. <br>\nSome people believe the government takes out loans on you when you're born, and that the gold fringe on a flag in court means they are in a court of admiralty. <br>\nAnd perhaps there are tons of weasel words in this, but this rant isn't managed by Wikipedia, and it's certainly an unkempt rant by some dude behind a computer. <br>\n<br>\nI guess what it all comes down to is how people <em>act</em> on their beliefs. <br>\nWith all that being said, don't run off to the crystal ball, stuff the tarot, put away that lottery ticket, and definitely don't pray for solutions to your problems. All those things <em>vide supra</em>.... won't help you determine truth and facts. Pick up a book, read some peer-reviewed articles, talk to people, and <em>maybe</em> party. <strong>It's up to you.</strong><br>\n<br>\nI swear I'll be back with more. Until then, I hope this tickled your literary fancy. <br>\n-Igarashi<br>\n</p>\n</html>",
