What was the problem? What question did you ask yourself in order to find a solution? One of my favorite comedians, Mitch Hedberg, told the following joke:</h3>\n<h1><em>\"If you find yourself lost in the woods, fuck it, build a house. 'Well, I was lost but now I live here! I have severely improved my predicament!'\"</em></h1>\n<h3>Good joke? I think so. Clever allegory for problem-solving? <em>Absolutely.</em> In three sentences, Hedberg demonstrates how framing a problem differently can lead to success.</h3>\n<h3>How might one of mankind’s greatest problem-solvers approach a precarious situation? Oddly, Albert Einstein spoke about a hypothetical scenario similar to the one in this joke. He said that if he had an hour to solve a problem that his life depended on, he’d spend the first fifty-five minutes determining the proper question to ask. Once he identified the proper question, he felt confident that he could solve the problem within minutes. Einstein believed that in order to find a valuable answer, you need to ask the right question. So, what question is Hedberg alluding to?</h3>\n<h3>If you’re like me, the joke becomes funny when he unexpectedly shifts the frame of the problem. Instead of, “How can I <em>get</em>home?” he ponders, “How can I <em>be</em> home?” By reframing the issue, Hedberg’s witty recommendation to “build a house” becomes a possible solution. If you build a house in the woods and make it your home, haven’t you found a solution for being lost? If you were lost in the woods but now you live there, haven’t you severely improved your predicament? Of course, building a house isn’t as easy as it sounds—but that’s not the point. The point is that framing a problem incorrectly can eliminate possible solutions. Building a house isn’t an option unless you make it one.Unless you consciously decide how to view the world, your perspective is merely reflexive. When you allow impulses to dominate your worldview, you rob yourself of opportunity. You limit your options before you even make a decision.<br>\n<br>\nNext time you need to overcome a challenge, find ways to shift your point of view. Use your imagination to attack the problem from different angles. Experiment with what-if scenarios. When freeing your mind, there’s no cost for thinking too creatively. Push past the edge of possibility and worry about reigning it back in later. Don’t settle for your initial framing. However, to truly perfect something you must be comfortable with imperfection and give yourself the opportunity to learn from your mistakes. Don’t let your attempts to create perfection stifle your ability to create. Perfectionism is a trap.</h3>\n<h3>In <a href=\"https://medium.com/r/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.tedorland.com%2Fartandfear%2Findex.html\"><em>Art &amp; Fear</em></a><em>,</em> authors <a href=\"https://medium.com/r/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.davidpaulbayles.com\">David Bayles</a> and <a href=\"https://medium.com/r/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.tedorland.com\">Ted Orland</a> recount how a ceramics teacher’s experiment demonstrated the snare of perfection. He divided his class into groups. All of the students to his left would be graded based on the sheer quantity of their work. Fifty pounds of pots would secure an <em>A</em>. The students on his right would be graded according to the quality of their work and therefore only needed to produce one impeccable pot to receive an <em>A</em>. The class produced various pots — many poor, some good and a few great. In the end, an interesting pattern emerged. The highest quality pots were produced by the students graded on quantity. It seems that while the quantity group was diligently producing work, the quality group spent time conceptualizing perfection and actualized very little.</h3>\n<h3>When we aim for perfection and fall short, we begin doubting. We feel defeated. We feel stuck. “Maybe I’ll never get this right.” Eventually, our doubt gives way to hesitation and we become averse to risk. When it gets stressful, we look for comfort. We stick to things that we’re already great at and shy away from things that we can’t imagine doing flawlessly. We stop experimenting and progress is suspended. In practice, the pursuit of perfect<em>ion</em> actually prevents us from perfect<em>ing</em>.</h3>\n<h3>Meaningful decision-making inherently produces some errors. If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not making decisions that elicit progress. Failure may disappoint you, but do not let it discourage you. There’s no chance of success without the possibility of failure. Fortunately, failure has an upside. Every misstep and shortcoming is an opportunity to find new ways to improve. They reveal the flaws in your process and provide you with the context needed to make optimizations.</h3>\n<h3>Avoid fixating on ideals, which are illusive by design. Strive to make something good and incrementally refine it, <em>ad infinitum</em>.
