      "body": "어버버 하다가 당했다.\n\n몇 주 전인가 \"전에 기고하신 글 모아서 다른 책에 내도 될까요?\"라는 출판사의 전화를 받았다. 지난해 1년간 기자 시험 준비생이 보는 시사상식 책에 한 달에 한 번 A4 용지 4장 분량의 글 쓰기 방법을 기고했다. 서른셋에 기자 시험을 준비하며 공부했던 내용과 기자가 돼서 느낀 점을 녹여서 썼다. \n\n\"그러세요.\"라고 답했다. 몇 권 보내준다는 편집부의 말에 또 \"그러세요.\" 대답하고 전화를 끊었다. 오늘 책을 받았다. 내 이름이 책 맨 앞 공저자로 올라가 있었다. 난 여느 책 한 켠에 얌전히 담길 줄 알았다. 일이 커져 버렸다.\n\n처음에 원고 청탁이 왔을 때 거절했다. 동아일보 다니는 친구를 추천했다. 일간지 싫다고 주간지 간 3년차 기자보다 큰 회사 기자가 더 나은 길을 제시하리라 생각했다. 아무리 잘 써도 글은 까려면 깔 수 있는 녀석이다. 큰 언론사 기자가 쓰면 더 '진리' 같아 보인다. 어느 분야든 후광은 무시할 수 없다.\n\n출판사는 다시 부탁했다. \"망해도 좋다면 시키세요. 해보긴 할게요.\"라고 말했다. 그렇게 시작됐다. 생각보다 쉽지 않았다. 기사야 취재하고 사람을 만나서 정리만 하면 된다. 글 쓰기 방법을 설명하는 글은 기획과 창작이 절대적이다. 한 달에 넉 장을 창작하는 건 고됐다. 월초만 되면 밤을 지새고 더 이상 미룰 수 없을 만큼 늦어진 마감에 허덕이다 1년을 무사히 넘겼다. \n\n411쪽 책 가운데 18%인 76 쪽을 책임졌다. 한편으로 뿌듯하다. 또 부담이 크다. 활자는 그렇게 남아 한 사람을 평생 괴롭히니까. 이문열 소설가도 그랬고 박문성 해설위원도 그랬듯 말이다. 어쩌겠나. 일은 벌어졌다.\n\n이 소식을 들은 친구이자 기자 선배 녀석은 \"최훈민 가르침대로 쓰면 붙는 거 맞냐?\"고 했다. 이 지점이었다. 이 기고 요청을 수락하기 힘들었던 이유 말이다. 용기를 냈다. 물론 겁쟁이처럼 단서를 달았다. 기고의 여는 글에 이런 글을 썼다. \n\n\"기고 제안을 받고 고민이 앞섰습니다. 저는 2년차 꼬마 기자일 뿐입니다. '메이저'라 불리는 곳에서 일하지도 않습니다. 뭘 보더라도 저는 언론 시험을 준비하는 분들께 무언가를 알려드릴 수 있는 위치가 아닙니다. \n\n다만 제가 기고하겠다고 마음 먹을 수 있었던 건 '용기 정도 줄 수 있다'는 자신감 때문이었습니다. 전 32세 나이에 잘 다니던 회사에 사표를 낸 뒤 1년 여행 등을 하고 33살 4월부터 10월까지 딱 반 년 준비해 기자증을 목에 걸었습니다. \n\n그때 기억을 되살려 포인트 별로 하나씩 풀어갈까 합니다. 정답이 아닙니다. 다만 '이렇게 써서 기자가 된 사람도 있구나'라고 가볍게 읽어 주셨으면 좋겠습니다. 쉽게 말해 '이 정도 써서 운 좋게 붙은 기자가 있었구나'라고 생각하시면 됩니다. \n\n저는 늘 새끼손톱으로 턱걸이 합격하는 사람입니다. 하지만 어떻게 해서든 기자증을 목에 걸고 싶은 사람들에게 제가 쓰는 글이 조금이나마 도움됐으면 합니다. 저와 지금부터 1년 정도 함께 하신 뒤 '저 합격했습니다. 기고했던 글이 많이 도움됐어요'라고 쓴 미래 기자 후배님의 전자우편 기다리고 있겠습니다.\"\n\n출판사가 처음 제시했던 원고료는 한 편에 10만 원이었다. 쓰다 보니 도저히 10만 원으로 쓸 염두가 안 났다. 30만 원을 요구했다. 조건을 걸었다. \n\n\"내가 투입하는 노력에 비해 금액이 너무 적다. 허나 출판업계가 어려운 것도 안다. 그래도 올려 달라. 올린 만큼 다시 돌려 드리겠다. 나중에 기고가 다 끝나면 내가 받은 돈 전부를 당신들에게 주겠다. 그 돈으로 내 글을 모은 소책자 만들어 달라.\"\n\n소책자의 목적은 간단했다. 지방에서 기자 준비하는 학생에게 무료로 뿌릴 용도였다. 지방에도 기자 준비하는 학생들이 꽤 많다. 자체적으로 학교에서 언론시험준비반을 운영할 정도다. 허나 서울에서 받을 수 있는 교육의 양과 질이 턱없이 부족하다. 소책자가 나오면 조금이나마 도움되라는 기대 때문이었다.\n\n소책자를 기획하기도 전에 이 책이 덜컥 나와 버렸다. 가격은 1만 6000원인데 저자 할인 받으면 1만 2800원 정도 될 거라 생각한다. 내가 번 돈은 갑근세 빼고 달 19만 3400원이었다. 일 년 다 합하면 232만 800원이다. 181권쯤 살 수 있을 거다. \n\n181명에게 이 책을 무료로 보내줄 생각이다. 배송비 여부에 따라 좀 달라지겠지만 대략 번 돈 다 털어서 보낼 요량이다. 이따금 내 글 보는 기자 준비생이 있는 거 안다. 신청하면 보낼 테니 연락 바란다.\n\n다시 한 번 강조한다. 이걸 본다고 붙는 게 아니다.
