| title | So I rewrote a great Pericles speech, replacing Democracy with Oligarchy |
| body |

So I was bored, and decided to rewrite Pericles' Democracy speech, replacing democracy with oligarchy. The original, very inspiring, speech is here: http://www.rjgeib.com/thoughts/athens/athens.html

Our form of government is called an oligarchy because our form of government does not imitate the laws of neighboring states. On the contrary, we are rather a warning to others. Our form of government is called an oligarchy because its administration is in the hands, not of the whole people, but of a few. In the settling of private disputes, the law prefers the rich and powerful. Election to public office is made on the basis of membership to a particular class, not on the basis of ability. A man is kept out of public office by the obscurity of his social standing because of his poverty, regardless of his wish to be of service to the state. And not only in our public life are we opressed and intolerant, but a sense of opression regulates our day-to-day life with each other. We flare up in anger at our neighbor if he does what he likes. And when we do not directly accuse, we show a kind of silent disapproval that causes pain in others. In our private affairs, then, we are intolerant and enjoy giving offense. And in public affairs, we are ambivalent toward breaking a law because of the low respect we have for them. We are forced to give our begrudging obedience to the men who hold public office from year to year; to men who pay little regard to those laws that are for the protection of the oppressed and to all the unwritten laws that we know bring disgrace upon the transgressor when they are broken.

Let me add another point. We have had the poor judgement to provide for our spirits fewer opportunities for relaxation from hard work than other people. Instead of living balanced lives, throughout the year, there are dramatic and athletic contests and religious festivals. In our homes we find kitsch and poor taste, and the emptiness we find every day in this stops us from dreaming. And because of the dilapidation of our city, all kinds of imports flow in to us from all over the world. But while we enjoy the products of other nations, we no longer enjoy things we produce ourselves, for we have forgotten how to make them.

The way we live differs in another respect from that of our enemies. We pretend our city is open to all the world, but unless one can afford a good enough lawyer, it is easier to enter illegally. Never-the-less we have a multitude of aliens' laws to exclude people, albeit inconsistently, from finding and seeking what they will here, and finding secrets of the city that an enemy might find out about and use to his advantage. For our security, we rely on defense contractors, and secrecy, but not on the courage that springs from our souls, when we are called into action.

Our love for consumerist trash makes us extravagant, and our distaste of things of the mind makes us soft. We regard wealth as the primary measure of a man, and as something to boast about. Our poor need be ashamed to admit their poverty, for we conclude they must not have done their best to escape from poverty. Our concern for our private affairs is imbalanced by our abstinence from the affairs of the city. Even people who could easily google the facts are extremely poorly informed on political matters. We do not simply regard a man who participates in the city's life as one who wishes the best for his fellow citizens, but as an egghead. We all join in debate about the affairs of the city, but only on social media, and sometimes cast votes to participate in the decisions. We do not believe that what is damaging is to go into action in a crucial situation before the people have been fully instructed in debate. After all, we do not think that these votes lead to action.

|

| body | Before the internet, it was quite easy for a Canuck artist to have a hit domestically, but remain competely unheard of elsewhere. These days, digital distribution tends to even everything out. Most of these songs your average Canadian assumes everyone knows. http://thetfs.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/bob-and-doug1.jpg World Famous in Canada https://youtu.be/sl751CDdRZI Stompin' Tom Connors - Sudbury Saturday Night (1970) Tom was one of Canada’s most beloved figures. So much so that St. Thomas University in New Brunswick awarded him an honorary degree. https://youtu.be/0-EttUFQmWs Trooper - The Boys In The Bright White Sports Car (1976) Hands down the most obnoxious song ever recorded. https://youtu.be/PFwom4D3i4g Rough Trade - High School Confidential (1980) This song was everywhere in the 1980s. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRPTpHFaV9U Headpins - Don't It Make Ya Feel (1982) Canada’s version of ACDC. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KA5CEUZH1AA Spoons - Nova Heart (1982) New wave, Canadian style. The great Nile Rodgers produced one of their albums. https://youtu.be/e-e-lZekd2Y Dalbello - Gonna Get Close To You (1984) Fun fact: David Bowie’s guitarist Mick Ronson saved her career. https://youtu.be/4A3gcDg5M3M The Box - L'Affaire Dumoutier (1985) French-Canadian New Wave. https://youtu.be/Q54pu2hx968 Dream Warriors - My Definition Of A Boombastic Jazz Style (1990) Dream Warriors revived this tune before it became the Austin Powers theme. https://youtu.be/VHQFDf96yrw Meryn Cadell - The Sweater (1992) This one got some airplay on college radio in the USA. It fared better at home in Canada, due to regular rotation on Much Music (Canada’s version of MTV). That's it for now. Hope you enjoyed the CanCon. |

The advent of affordable analogue synthesizers, Space Invaders and Star Wars, all made this style of music possible. The advent of sampling synthesizers killed it (or rather transformed it from Techno Pop into plain Techno).

Though the Techno Pop I love is a dead art, the old recordings are still as wonderful a listen as ever today. Maybe more wonderful: There’s a lot of charm in lyrics about what “the future” meant to people 30 years ago.

So let’s get in our time machine, and travel to 1975, a time when "EDM" meant "Education degree".

TECHNO POP, 1975-1985

1975

https://youtu.be/P1rezswXJ2c

Kraftwerk - Antenna

Kraftwerk, along with Moroder and Vangelis, set the tone for the next ten years. There had been Space Rock, before they came along, but little in the way of catchy “synth only” pop music. Kraftwerk were different from the rest of the music scene. Even David Bowie was easier for the public to digest. At the time, Kraftwerk, with with their clean-cut appearance, and total absence of Rock music aggression, was hard to perceive as anything other than a novelty band (until that novelty swept the rest of the world, too)

1976

https://youtu.be/8kDXADYUgqk

Vangelis - Albedo 0.39

I’m not sure if the main title of Blade Runner sounds impressive to young ears today. In 1982, it sounded like the future. The soundtrack of Blade Runner was already legendary in the 1980s, which is impressive considering a proper Soundtrack recording wasn’t released until 1994! If you wanted to hear it, you had to catch a showing at the movie theater.

1977

https://youtu.be/kSIMVnPA994

Jean-Michel Jarre - Oxygene, Pt. 4

Jean-Michel Jarre didn’t have the staying power of Kraftwerk, but Oxygene was a massive hit in the 1980s. In the 1980s, the world was taken with JMJ, we loved him almost as much as he loved himself.

https://youtu.be/PfAu8vqAHxc

Giorgio Moroder - From Here To Eternity

Giorgio is another giant of Synth Pop. More commercial than Kraftwerk, he (along with Donna Summer, and Casablanca records) had a huge hand in transforming Disco music. He turned it from guitar-based music, to an arpeggiated analogue celebration of technology. The music he produced in the mid seventies set the tone. It still amuses me that Kiss had him produce “Dynasty”. He was hardly an obvious choice to help create a heavy metal album. Recently, Daft Punk worked with Moroder, which has brought his name renewed attention. Moroder is also notable for releasing the world’s first album recorded, mastered and released entirely digitally (the album "E=MC²" from 1979)

1978

https://youtu.be/nizfvjzQSG8

Rockets - On the Road Again

Rockets were a French “Space Rock” band. Gimmicky, but fun.

https://youtu.be/1dizoteg8SQ

Space Art - Nous Savons Tout

Great song, by another French artist. I don’t believe this was ever a big hit, but for 1978 it sounds so far ahead of its time. Also the title "WE KNOW ALL!" is such a great sci-fi one-liner, so bad ass! Eat your heart out, Arthur C Clarke!

https://youtu.be/bTFCwKvlKZo

Dee D. Jackson - Automatic Lover

This was a huge disco hit. Very pop, very Moroder-inspired. Later in the 1990s, a few throw-away rave acts, like Messiah, borrowed the melody.

1979

https://youtu.be/9OQ-b2l-NCk

Yellow Magic Orchestra - Rydeen

YMO was a prolific band from Japan; Asia’s answer to Kraftwerk. Check out their drummer - that guy is too cool for words.

https://youtu.be/WkgfttDta00

Wolfgang Bock - Cycles

This is Vangelis type fare. Not a huge hit, not even pop music. It's worth including because it captures the spirit, and is so dreamy and timeless besides.

1980

https://youtu.be/n_YBhOTzWqU

Yello - Eternal Legs

A perfect song, by another giant of Techno Pop. Even before Ferris Bueller made them world-famous with “Oh Yeah” in 1986, they had already scored a minor hit with “Bostich.” Formed in Switzerland, the band is basically a collaboration between a nerdy musician, and a millionaire who sang and provided financing.

https://youtu.be/v5a9Tx_GCSE

Krisma - Cathode Mamma

Chrisma/Krisma was an Italian band. They transitioned from Disco, to Goth/New Wave, to Techno Pop. They weren’t very successful at the time, but their reputation has grown and grown. Rumor has it Vangelis produced them.

https://youtu.be/Y0zsNukwNQM

Telex - We Are All Getting Old

This would be Belgium’s answer to Kraftwerk. Better known for their track "Moskow Diskow" which is also great fun.

1981

https://youtu.be/SOlwNqxDteA

Data - Opera Electronica

Data was a Georg Kajanus project. Aside from being a rock star, in the band Sailor, his ancestors were Russian royalty. After the revolution, his family moved to Norway. He is also one of the most technically capable music composers in all of popular music. Check out his bio, on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georg_Kajanus

https://youtu.be/b9xBAtCsCTQ

Trans-X - Living On Video

This one had a fair amount of commercial success. The style is Italo Disco, but the band was actually French Canadian. The video is a real blast. The girl looks like she stepped off the set of a John Hughes movie. The song inspired a lot of subsequent europop... mainly bad europop.

https://youtu.be/EbbxV1zbSwU

Kuruki - Crocodile Tears

Another Belgian artist. The singing is very 1980s "everything is serious" stuff. Nice tune, though.

1982

https://youtu.be/pQB2F0zv0zo

Patrick Cowley - Megatron Man

Cowley made underground gay disco. The production is superb. Equal parts futuristic cool, and commercial cheese. He was American, but his sound is very Italo/NRG Disco.

https://youtu.be/gkkONqTxBA8

Yazoo - Situation

You've heard this one before, no doubt. Yazoo was the duo Vince Clarke formed after parting ways with Depeche Mode.

1983

https://youtu.be/I8j2ej5jqQw

Laid Back - White Horse

Danish techno pop. "White Horse" was a quirky B-Side that ended up charting in several countries. The video looks like it had a decent budget considering the year it was made.

https://youtu.be/eglu23iGsU0

Charlie - Spacer Woman

Not a huge hit, but such a charming tune. It sounds like they wanted a vocoder, but didn’t have access to one, and settled for a tremolo unit.

https://youtu.be/RLuAPW9tYOs

Lama - 1993

Very polished, commercial sound. If you lived through the eighties, the lyrics in the song will make you nostalgic: after all, we’re listening in 2016 to these lyrics recorded in 1983, envisioning what the future would be like in 1993. Ha! Sigh.

https://youtu.be/zDV_dBYp4h0

Mr. Flagio - Take a Chance

Italo Disco. From Italy, appropriately enough.

https://youtu.be/tk171kMKS64

Paul Hardcastle - King Tut

We’re reaching the end of our ten years now. At this point, we see the beginnings of synth-based music transforming into something else. Less analog, more influenced by rap music…

Paul Hardcastle hit it big a couple years after this with his anti-war hit “19.” His sound, jazzier and more soul-inspired than Kraftwerk, went on to influence House artists.

https://youtu.be/XjQhrzvWOyg

Midnight Star - Electricity

You can hear the influence of “Planet Rock”, Afrika Bambaataa’s hit from the previous year. “Planet Rock” itself was based on a Kraftwerk melody. European tech influence, fusing with American rap and soul.

1984

https://youtu.be/IsvfofcIE1Q

Depeche Mode - Master And Servant

And suddenly... FM synths, and samplers. Analog synths are destined to be "old technology". This is awkward because it was still cheaper to buy a car than a Synclavier.

1985

https://youtu.be/NeD1cyZ8IqQ

Art of Noise - Legs

“Art of Noise” destroyed the sound of the previous ten years. For several years following “Legs”, it looked like it was over for analogue synths. Sampling synthesizers is where it was at.

And our journey is complete. I hope you enjoyed it, and I’ll leave you with… end titles. Hit it, Evangelos!

https://youtu.be/Gb092WwMMaU

|

In 1982, it sounded like the future. The soundtrack of Blade Runner was already legendary in the 1980s, which is impressive considering a proper Soundtrack recording wasn’t released until 1994! If you wanted to hear it, you had to catch a showing at the movie theater.
\n

\n
1977
\n
https://youtu.be/kSIMVnPA994
\n
Jean-Michel Jarre - Oxygene, Pt. 4
\n
Jean-Michel Jarre didn’t have the staying power of Kraftwerk, but Oxygene was a massive hit in the 1980s. In the 1980s, the world was taken with JMJ, we loved him almost as much as he loved himself.
\n

\n
https://youtu.be/PfAu8vqAHxc
\n
Giorgio Moroder - From Here To Eternity
\n
Giorgio is another giant of Synth Pop. More commercial than Kraftwerk, he (along with Donna Summer, and Casablanca records) had a huge hand in transforming Disco music. He turned it from guitar-based music, to an arpeggiated analogue celebration of technology. The music he produced in the mid seventies set the tone. It still amuses me that Kiss had him produce “Dynasty”. He was hardly an obvious choice to help create a heavy metal album. Recently, Daft Punk worked with Moroder, which has brought his name renewed attention. Moroder is also notable for releasing the world’s first album recorded, mastered and released entirely digitally (the album \"E=MC²\" from 1979)
\n

\n
1978
\n
https://youtu.be/nizfvjzQSG8
\n
Rockets - On the Road Again
\n
Rockets were a French “Space Rock” band. Gimmicky, but fun.
\n

\n
https://youtu.be/1dizoteg8SQ
\n
Space Art - Nous Savons Tout
\n
Great song, by another French artist. I don’t believe this was ever a big hit, but for 1978 it sounds so far ahead of its time. Also the title \"WE KNOW ALL!\" is such a great sci-fi one-liner, so bad ass! Eat your heart out, Arthur C Clarke!
\n

\n
https://youtu.be/bTFCwKvlKZo
\n
Dee D. Jackson - Automatic Lover
\n
This was a huge disco hit. Very pop, very Moroder-inspired. Later in the 1990s, a few throw-away rave acts, like Messiah, borrowed the melody.
\n

\n
1979
\n
https://youtu.be/9OQ-b2l-NCk
\n
Yellow Magic Orchestra - Rydeen
\n
YMO was a prolific band from Japan; Asia’s answer to Kraftwerk. Check out their drummer - that guy is too cool for words.
\n

\n
https://youtu.be/WkgfttDta00
\n
Wolfgang Bock - Cycles
\n
This is Vangelis type fare. Not a huge hit, not even pop music. It's worth including because it captures the spirit, and is so dreamy and timeless besides.
\n

\n
1980
\n
https://youtu.be/n_YBhOTzWqU
\n
Yello - Eternal Legs
\n
A perfect song, by another giant of Techno Pop. Even before Ferris Bueller made them world-famous with “Oh Yeah” in 1986, they had already scored a minor hit with “Bostich.” Formed in Switzerland, the band is basically a collaboration between a nerdy musician, and a millionaire who sang and provided financing.
\n

\n
https://youtu.be/v5a9Tx_GCSE
\n
Krisma - Cathode Mamma
\n
Chrisma/Krisma was an Italian band. They transitioned from Disco, to Goth/New Wave, to Techno Pop. They weren’t very successful at the time, but their reputation has grown and grown. Rumor has it Vangelis produced them.
\n

\n
https://youtu.be/Y0zsNukwNQM
\n
Telex - We Are All Getting Old
\n
This would be Belgium’s answer to Kraftwerk. Better known for their track \"Moskow Diskow\" which is also great fun.
\n

\n
1981
\n
https://youtu.be/SOlwNqxDteA
\n
Data - Opera Electronica
\n
Data was a Georg Kajanus project. Aside from being a rock star, in the band Sailor, his ancestors were Russian royalty. After the revolution, his family moved to Norway. He is also one of the most technically capable music composers in all of popular music. Check out his bio, on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georg_Kajanus
\n

\n
https://youtu.be/b9xBAtCsCTQ
\n
Trans-X - Living On Video
\n
This one had a fair amount of commercial success. The style is Italo Disco, but the band was actually French Canadian. The video is a real blast. The girl looks like she stepped off the set of a John Hughes movie. The song inspired a lot of subsequent europop... mainly bad europop.
\n

\n
https://youtu.be/EbbxV1zbSwU
\n
Kuruki - Crocodile Tears
\n
Another Belgian artist. The singing is very 1980s \"everything is serious\" stuff. Nice tune, though.
\n

\n
1982
\n
https://youtu.be/pQB2F0zv0zo
\n
Patrick Cowley - Megatron Man
\n
Cowley made underground gay disco. The production is superb. Equal parts futuristic cool, and commercial cheese. He was American, but his sound is very Italo/NRG Disco.
\n

\n
https://youtu.be/gkkONqTxBA8
\n
Yazoo - Situation
\n
You've heard this one before, no doubt. Yazoo was the duo Vince Clarke formed after parting ways with Depeche Mode.
\n

\n
1983
\n
https://youtu.be/I8j2ej5jqQw
\n
Laid Back - White Horse
\n
Danish techno pop. \"White Horse\" was a quirky B-Side that ended up charting in several countries. The video looks like it had a decent budget considering the year it was made.
\n

\n
https://youtu.be/eglu23iGsU0
\n
Charlie - Spacer Woman
\n
Not a huge hit, but such a charming tune. It sounds like they wanted a vocoder, but didn’t have access to one, and settled for a tremolo unit.
\n

\n
https://youtu.be/RLuAPW9tYOs
\n
Lama - 1993
\n
Very polished, commercial sound. If you lived through the eighties, the lyrics in the song will make you nostalgic: after all, we’re listening in 2016 to these lyrics recorded in 1983, envisioning what the future would be like in 1993. Ha! Sigh.
\n

\n
https://youtu.be/zDV_dBYp4h0
\n
Mr. Flagio - Take a Chance
\n
Italo Disco. From Italy, appropriately enough.
\n

\n
https://youtu.be/tk171kMKS64
\n
Paul Hardcastle - King Tut
\n
We’re reaching the end of our ten years now. At this point, we see the beginnings of synth-based music transforming into something else. Less analog, more influenced by rap music…
\n
Paul Hardcastle hit it big a couple years after this with his anti-war hit “19.” His sound, jazzier and more soul-inspired than Kraftwerk, went on to influence House artists.
\n

\n
https://youtu.be/XjQhrzvWOyg
\n
Midnight Star - Electricity
\n
You can hear the influence of “Planet Rock”, Afrika Bambaataa’s hit from the previous year. “Planet Rock” itself was based on a Kraftwerk melody. European tech influence, fusing with American rap and soul.
\n
1984
\n
https://youtu.be/IsvfofcIE1Q
\n
Depeche Mode - Master And Servant
\n
And suddenly... FM synths, and samplers. Analog synths are destined to be \"old technology\". This is awkward because it was still cheaper to buy a car than a Synclavier.
\n
1985
\n
https://youtu.be/NeD1cyZ8IqQ
\n
Art of Noise - Legs
\n
“Art of Noise” destroyed the sound of the previous ten years. For several years following “Legs”, it looked like it was over for analogue synths. Sampling synthesizers is where it was at.
\n

\n
And our journey is complete. I hope you enjoyed it, and I’ll leave you with… end titles. Hit it, Evangelos!
\n
https://youtu.be/Gb092WwMMaU
\n
",
