| title | Warriors, come out to play: The bonfire of the vanities |
| body |

Bonkers... bonkers everywhere!

Isiah Thomas said his daughter had an overdose to protect himself from the press.

Yao was never able to come out of his shell and make everyone know he should be called Ming instead.

Leon Smith attempted suicide on 250 aspirins.

Manute Bol used to play drunk.

Michael Jordan gambled his problems away.

Magic Johnson eased the pressure off giving away free samples of love.

Larry Bird left Indiana University twenty four days after arriving and started driving a garbage truck in French Lick.

Chris Mullin almost drunk his career away.

The Durant review

Kevin Durant didn´t leave his bed for two days, overwhelmed by the reaction to his "decision". Then went on to say "relationship with Westbrook will never be the same", then went on to say he withdrew from US Basketball in 2014 because of the ongoing shoe war on him between Nike and Under Armour.

Indeed, if you take a close look at Durant words, they look pretty defensive: "Charles Barkley said my legacy has dipped, I guess. I don’t even know what ‘your legacy’ means. It’s your decision to tell me what my legacy is to you. That’s how it is now. Individually, what do you think Michael Jordan’s legacy is about, LeBron James’ legacy is about? That’s an individual, personal thing. I can’t control that." No assertiveness whatsoever to be found in those words, if you ask me. Depending on others to set the tone of the most important issues in your life is a recipe for dissaster, as it leaves you always one step behind of the dominant narrative on what´s going on. And that applies to you and me, average joes, and to basketball stars. On top of that, Durant´s lack of assertiveness seems to fit with the theory that portrays Westbrook as a person who simply took a bigger and bigger role in Thunder´s offense just because he wanted to and felt he could do it.

All of the above goes to show how underrated the mental side of the game is. Virtually every NBA player you can think of, from big marquee names to nearly noones, have, this way or the other, succumbed to their own ghosts, fell short of their own expectations, crumbled under a heavy load, you name it.

Game of microphones

In fact, everyone that´s put under the media microscope seem to fall short of the test... singers, politicians, actors... no one passes the test, with one exception: the second generation stars. Children who were born into the fame world and were allowed to learn the tricks of the trade slowly, behind the scenes, seem to live naturally in that kind of world. Nba can show some examples of this:

Kobe Bryant not breaking down under the national coverage of his Colorado incident, Mike Dunleavy Jr surviving the early bust label, Andrew Wiggins, Ben Simmons, Tony Parker, Luke Walton... the list goes on and so does the trend: these individuals seem better equiped, psychologically speaking, than their unheralded counterparts for the media game, or even better equiped than those who may be sons of former players but weren´t raised in that kind of environment.

Warriors show two examples of players that grew up inside the system, and seem pretty comfortable standing in their spot: The Splash Brothers, Curry and Thompson. They both seem relaxed and cool with their current status, as it is nothing more than another step in a life curve they have seen their own father take. Both Dell Curry and Mychal Thompson lived long, successful careers, with ups and downs, accomplishments and shortcomings, media exposure and both the privileges and pressure that come with it. You can even see the saga going on taking a look at the Curry family: while Ayesha overreacts like anyone would when first into the oven that american media is, Riley looks at the circus with the natural attitude only a kid can show.

Summing up, mental game will be an important one for the Warriors´ quest of the Larry O'Brien Trophy. Fasten your seatbelts, for bumps are coming down the road...

#nba #basketball #warriors #gsw #durant #curry #thompson #draymond

|

| title | Warriors, come out and play: The Pachulia Conundrum |
| body |

In order to land Durant, the Warriors had to pay a price: they dismantled their center rotation by trading away Bogut and renouncing both Speights and Ezeli. Trying to make up for that, they signed Zaza Pachulia with their remaining 2.9 million. Today we´ll be taking a look at those moves and how they could affect their ring chase.

Bogut, Speights and Ezeli

Bogut will be missed. He logged 20 minutes per night, all of them at center. He was better than average in most metrics, and very good in some, such as defensive rebounding and... rim protection.
Losing Speights will be a net gain for the Warriors. They will be losing 12 minutes a night of scoring... of scoring on their own basket, that is. Speights defensive ratings were really bad, and his offense didn´t really make up for it. Another coach´s problem, now.
Ezeli was a bit player in regular season because of injuries, and while he had good potential, GSW already knew how to play without him, so they will miss him in the long run, because you never can have too many nice, young bigs... unless you´re the Kings, of course.

Zaur Pachulia goes lucky and finds himself a ring

Pachulia has been around since 2003, 13 seasons of bruising, rebounding and screening for others to take the bright spot. He reportedly was on the verge of a 20 million, 2 years deal with the Wizards when he received Warriors´ call. He had a decent year with Dallas, starting hot (for his own standards) and cooling off as the season advanced. In a similar fashion to David West, it´s uncertain wether this means his age has caught up with him. Anyway, we know what GSW is getting here: and that´s abyssal rim protection. We´re talking Andrea Bargnani level here. Not Bargnani effort level, not Bargnani talent level. But certainly Bargnani level rim protection.

Has anybody said ring chaser?

The Dubs signed David West as well, and he played both inside spots for the Spurs in his previous ring chasing tenure. Despite what you might have heard, West was pretty good for the Spurs: he was above average, specially on the defensive side, in practically every metric you want to take into consideration... except rim protection (hint: very important metric at center). Of course, father time can catch up with him any minute, but for the minimum, you can make much worst than that.

Risk and reward: The Hassan Whiteside Theory

For a front office claiming to be light years ahead of the game, GSW approach on this issue was pretty subpar. There were rumors they might be looking for the next diamond in the rough for the center position, the next Hassan Whiteside, so to speak. Of course, Hassan Whiteside´s story is hard to duplicate, but there were some candidates: Dewayne Dedmon and Willie Reed, mainly. None of them had the kind of defensive stats Whiteside does, but neither Hassan himself had them before he was put in a position to succeed.

Everybody loves Draymond

All of the above reasons make Draymond Green the de facto center of the Warriors. He was already logging 15 to 20 minutes a night there, depending on matchups, fouls, opponent and other factors. For the next season, expect those minutes to steadily increase through the season. In deed, expect them to grow as much as big of a problem the Dubs have with the center position, just like fever is a symptom of how big an infection is.

And so the question remains: can you win it all in the association nowadays without rim protection?

Feel free to give your insights below...

#nba #basketball #warriors #gsw #draymond #pachulia #bogut #bargnani

|

| body | Nice read. No doubt in my mind this will be a season for the ages, bigger than anything we´ve seen before. You can see my take on it here: https://steemit.com/nba/@hugolanz/warriors-come-out-to-play Feel free to reply... On the free agency side, I don´t see Horford the way you do: Has a history with injuries, is on the wrong side of 30, so it´s only a matter of time until that contract looks like a bad one. As of now, it looks good. However, we tend to forget it has to look good through the whole lenght of it, not only the day the player signs up. Winners and losers? Warriors are an easy winner. Every team would exchange offseasons with them, and they would exchange theirs with no one. Pelicans, Lakers an Rockets, on the other hand... at least the Horford contract looks good now. Hill, Mozgov, Deng, Anderson, Gordon... they all look like gross overpayments now, and it will only get worst. |

| body | I think people are underestimating how difficult it might be for KD to mesh with Golden State. I mean they obviously seem incredible on paper, but that's not how the game's played. I agree that we'll likely see them start slow out of the gate with the immense level of pressure on their shoulders to look like an NBA 2k17 video game team every night. Time will tell, but KD actually got most of the nation on Lebron's side now, who wouldah thought that just a few years ago? |

| body | Westbrook is still a freak, and you would think that given his talent level he would totally be capable of leading a team to the championship. But you're right, he's just missing "it" and I don't think he ever becomes the player he's truly capable of becoming. I hope he signs with the Lakers this off season and my C's look elsewhere. |

| body | Horford is a nice piece to have, but some questions arise: Will it be enough to make it past Cavs and Raps? He´s had his share of injuries... Will he stay healthy? He´s not on the young side... How long until father time makes the contract looks bad? As of today, anything other than a Warriors victory would be an upset, but we´ll see... | body | My taste in hip hop will never be the same after that rap battle... It looks like the loyalty issue is a big thing these days. People tend to forget how close Duncan was to signing with Orlando back in the days, so it looks like loyalty is not a black and white question, but, just like any other thing in life, a rich palette of shadow of grey, so to speak. Any way, take a look at my related post: https://steemit.com/nba/@hugolanz/warriors-come-out-to-play Feel free to reply |

| body | I think the question celtics (and others) are making themselves is: can a westbrook-lead team win it all? If you take a look at the games were durant was out with injury, the answer is an easy no: too much hero ball. Just like Iverson, Westbrook will most probably go down as a fan favorite without a ring. Just like Iverson, he needs the ball in his hands A LOT, and while that makes subpar teams stay afloat, it prevents them to grow, as well. So there you have the reason OKC is looking at pennies on the dollar offers... |

| title | Warriors, come out to play... |
| body |

For the last two years, the warriors have been, arguably, the biggest thing in the world of hoops. Kevin Durant has made the "arguably" part expendable. For, at least, the next season the Warriors are, officially, the biggest thing in basketball world since... since when? That´s the first interesting question we´ll be looking at. KD´s free agency has been often compared to Lebron´s "the decision", so that´s the first milestone to look at. It´s been six years already, and the turn of events that led King James to South Beach (pretty much like everything else in Durant´s career) make Durant look like a diluted version of the King. Ever since KD35 entered the league, he was appointed as the heir to the throne... after current king reign ended, of course, which has yet to hapen. Durant has always been under James´ shadow in terms of position (sf), basketball greatness, accolades, career path, public impact, mommy´s influence... even when it comes to making his own decisions and rubbing people off in the process, James has outshined durant, and this is no different. To begin with, the whole narrative we have been sold on (Durant and Warriors needing each other) has been a sellable one because of the amazing finals performance of one single individual: James. But let´s take a look back: in 2010, Bron was coming off yet another playoff disappointment. The noise surronding his free agency had been loud as it could get for the whole year, and it only took off from there when the Celtics eliminated the Cavs. Soon as he made public his decision, Lebron took the same hits Durant is taking nowadays: he was portrayed as a seccond fiddle to Wade, a false alpha dog, a player unable to establish his own legacy: a traitor. Even the fact he chose to wear number six took a wrong turn: he was paying homeage to Dr. J, a controversial figure himself, with the twisted way his career developed. Miami became the world capital of basketball, and everything Heat-related was heavily scrutinized. They had an unproven coach in Eric Spoelstra, a roster filled with holes and a permanent storm around them. And here comes the first lesson the Warriors (and we the fans) should be looking at: god forbid the Warriors start the season slow. The Heat started 9-8 and the whole project almost crumbled: Spo was rumored out, trades were rumored in, Bosh was forced to reinvent his game, James was despised by fans all over the league, even Riley was questioned for putting together a roster that seemed to fit quite well... on paper only. Even god forbid the Warriors have a bad preseason. If this was a regular team, one would say we must wait to mid-season to draw serious conclusions. If this was just a superteam, one could expect every game to be unde ¡r the microscope from the very beggining of the season. For this warriors team? Expect preseason to be huge. And, as 2012 Lakers showed, good preseasons can mean nothing, but bad preseasons certainly mean something. So if you happen to stumble upon KD at your local groceries store, don´t miss the chance to warn him: something bigger than oklahoman tornadoes is coming his way...

|
