Perhaps, after this article, you will have changed your mind. \n\nI am going to tell you a story – this story is called Zoopharmacognosy. The word ‘Zoopharmacognosy’is a word derived from Zoo (animal), pharma (drug) and cognosy (knowing). In short – this story is about animals knowing how to heal themselves. \n\nHere are some examples:\n\nChimpanzees\n\nJane Goodall recorded how chimps self-medicated. They often ate certain plants that forced them to vomit. They also swallowed, whole, the leaves of Aneilema aequinoctiale, an antiparasitic plant.\n\nButterflies\n\nMonarch butterflies lay their eggs on Milkweed plants. But, when they are infected by parasites, they choose a different variety of Milkweed, one with far higher levels of pyrrolizidine alkaloids. When the time comes for the larvae to hatch, they ingest this Milkweed, which decreases their parasite infestation.\n\nInterestingly, unparasitised larvae ingesting this plant, are more likely to die. The Monarch mom must get it right, or her babies die. And, unsurprisingly,  she does get it right.\n\nGiraffes\n\nGiraffes (and several other animals) with upset stomachs eat large quantities of termite mound soil. This particular soil has a high clay content. Clay is an effective binding agent and detoxifier, meaning it absorbs and deactivates toxins from bacteria. It also contains the mineral kaolin, which is used in many human treatments for diarrhoea.\n\nBaboons\n\nEuphorbiaceae plants are not part of the normal diet for Chacma baboons. But, occasionally, and only in very tiny amounts, these baboons will eat the leaves.  Scientists think the reason for this is the stimulatory properties that these plants have. But, the interesting thing is, they don’t overdose, they know the correct dose.\n\nStarlings\n\nEuropean Starlings, when they are suffering from feather parasites, collect and crush ants. Then they vigorously rub the dead ants into the plumage. Crushing ants in this way causes the release of formic acid (a strong insecticide and bacteriocide) and benzoquinones (insect repellents).\n\nThere are many other examples. That furry little kitten you brought home as a surprise for your child will mature into a quieter, calmer cat. Much like us transitioning from a small child to an adult. This is not necessarily a problem. But if you constantly deal with your dog chewing things or digging up your newly cared for garden or whining throughout the night – there is most likely a problem.       "body": "As fun as the Festive Season, Guy Fawkes and Halloween can be for us – it is a major issue when it comes to our fur babies.\n\nWe, humans, move through life consumed by routines and established habits – whether it be what you eat, when you sleep or who you talk to.\n\nSuddenly there comes massive changes - exciting holidays, loud celebrations and lost connections brought back to life with people you haven’t seen in years.\n\nEven though these happenings might bring a warm fuzzy feeling to your stomach and a small smile to your face – our fur babies might not be as enthusiastic.\n\n![bigstock--158638754.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmTMqab8kS5JRLjcmnmagX9DTV2tDH5txE8nKoUanWcqTF/bigstock--158638754.jpg)\n\nThey are put in the back seat and taken somewhere unfamiliar – kennels, a holiday home at the beach or maybe to a close friend. That – or crowds of unfamiliar people make their way into your home, invading your pet’s only known safe haven. Not long after that – things further descend as intoxicated people stumble around your home breaking things, weird bangs and flashes are happening outside and screaming children fill the only silence left in your home.\n\nFrom this point onwards – a real, overwhelming fear starts building that only gets worse and worse by the second.\n\nThis could lead to one of two things – either your pet will become aggressive and lash out at anybody who dare comes near them or your pet will crawl into a ball with such a piercing feeling of fear going through its body that the only way to escape will be by running far far away. The classic ‘flight/fight’ response.\n\nResearch has shown that both aggressive dogs and runaway dogs are more present during January/December. \n\nSigns that your dog or cat is becoming nervous include:\n\n•\tHiding\n•\tChewing\n•\tPanting\n•\tPacing\n•\tDigging\n•\tTrying to jump out of windows or otherwise escape\n•\tDrooling\n•\tSeeking out the owner\n•\tBarking\n•\tTrembling\n•\tDilated Pupils\n\nLuckily though, according to University of Washington psychologist James Ha, a specialist in animal behaviour, says that there are three ways to manage nervousness in your pet: management, treatment and drugs.\n\n**Managing nervousness in your pets**\n\nThis is where you introduce your pet to things that might overwhelm them: loud noises, crowds of people and flashy displays a.k.a fireworks. Either you could purchase CD’s with loud noises on them or slowly introduce your pet to these things in a controlled environment. You have to make sure that good behaviour is rewarded.\n\nYou could also put your pet in a quiet, safe room away from all the noise with the doors and curtains closed to minimise the noise. Wrapping your pet in a pressure wrap might also help.\n\n**Natural remedies could help**\n\nThere are several herbal remedies on the market that could help your pet deal with their anxiety. This would need to be given a few days prior to the event in order for it to work to its full capacity. \n\n**If nothing else works, see your vet**\n\nIf the problem is severe, medication prescribed by the vet might be needed. Speak to your vet in advance so that, when the time comes, you have the medication on hand.",

      "body": "I bet you’ve heard a lot of these myths around the yard. Usually delivered in a very authoritative voice that you can’t ignore. But some of these are, as Trump would say “fake news” or “alternative facts”.\n\n![bigstock-Two-Horses-Embracing--112428014.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmRFLbzrCpxw9UjGxNL1SRVns41DE6XmTUrX4aw6Tp9CFm/bigstock-Two-Horses-Embracing--112428014.jpg)\n\n**Horse Feeding Myth #1: Horse feed with a higher % protein is heatening**\n\nProtein actually won’t make your horse hot. It is not as easy to digest as carbohydrates are and doesn’t produce a high energy sugar spike in the blood like carbs do.  Rather look at the sugar content of your horse’s diet when evaluating it for heatening properties. (Ask any mother about the effects of a diet high in sugar….)\n\nThe digestion of a high grain diet with a high percentage of carbohydrates has been shown to cause an increase in the stress hormone, Cortisol. No such increase happens with protein digestion. In fact, certain amino acids (building blocks of protein) have a calming effect.\n\nHorses don’t need a lot of protein in their diet.  If fed in too high a quantity, it can be harmful to the kidneys.\n\n**Horse Feeding Myth #2: Never water a horse straight after exercise**\n\nI grew up believing this to be true. But, in fact, the sooner your horse drinks after exercise, even if he is hot, the better.  Cooling him down by walking him first just delays the replenishment of fluids and might make dehydration worse.\n\n**Horse Feeding Myth #3: My horse eats dirt because he is lacking in minerals**\n\nA study was done in the 1970s where the diets of horses eating dirt were studied.  It was found that, even horses with supplemented diets who were in no way lacking in any of the minerals, still ate dirt.\n\nWe don’t really know why this behaviour happens. It could be that our horse are simply bored or copying one another. A good supply of high quality forage does seem to stop the behaviour to a large extent.\n\n**More Horse Feeding Myths:**\n\nIf you know of any other myths around, or if you suspect some dodgy advice, send it through to me and I’ll do the research for you.
