| body | This chapter is a brief summary of the history of Computers. It is supplemented by the two PBS documentaries video tapes "Inventing the Future" And "The Paperback Computer". The chapter highlights some of the advances to look for in the documentaries. In particular, when viewing the movies you should look for two things: The progression in hardware representation of a bit of data: Vacuum Tubes (1950s) - one bit on the size of a thumb; Transistors (1950s and 1960s) - one bit on the size of a fingernail; Integrated Circuits (1960s and 70s) - thousands of bits on the size of a hand Silicon computer chips (1970s and on) - millions of bits on the size of a finger nail. The progression of the ease of use of computers: Almost impossible to use except by very patient geniuses (1950s); Programmable by highly trained people only (1960s and 1970s); Useable by just about anyone (1980s and on). to see how computers got smaller, cheaper, and easier to use. The first substantial computer was the giant ENIAC machine by John W. Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert at the University of Pennsylvania. ENIAC (Electrical Numerical Integrator and Calculator) used a word of 10 decimal digits instead of binary ones like previous automated calculators/computers. ENIAC was also the first machine to use more than 2,000 vacuum tubes, using nearly 18,000 vacuum tubes. Storage of all those vacuum tubes and the machinery required to keep the cool took up over 167 square meters (1800 square feet) of floor space. Nonetheless, it had punched-card input and output and arithmetically had 1 multiplier, 1 divider-square rooter, and 20 adders employing decimal "ring counters," which served as adders and also as quick-access (0.0002 seconds) read-write register storage. The executable instructions composing a program were embodied in the separate units of ENIAC, which were plugged together to form a route through the machine for the flow of computations. These connections had to be redone for each different problem, together with presetting function tables and switches. This "wire-your-own" instruction technique was inconvenient, and only with some license could ENIAC be considered programmable; it was, however, efficient in handling the particular programs for which it had been designed. ENIAC is generally acknowledged to be the first successful high-speed electronic digital computer (EDC) and was productively used from 1946 to 1955. A controversy developed in 1971, however, over the patentability of ENIAC's basic digital concepts, the claim being made that another U.S. physicist, John V. Atanasoff, had already used the same ideas in a simpler vacuum-tube device he built in the 1930s while at Iowa State College. In 1973, the court found in favor of the company using Atanasoff claim and Atanasoff received the acclaim he rightly deserved. Progression of Hardware n the 1950's two devices would be invented that would improve the computer field and set in motion the beginning of the computer revolution. The first of these two devices was the transistor. Invented in 1947 by William Shockley, John Bardeen, and Walter Brattain of Bell Labs, the transistor was fated to oust the days of vacuum tubes in computers, radios, and other electronics. The vacuum tube, used up to this time in almost all the computers and calculating machines, had been invented by American physicist Lee De Forest in 1906. The vacuum tube, which is about the size of a human thumb, worked by using large amounts of electricity to heat a filament inside the tube until it was cherry red. One result of heating this filament up was the release of electrons into the tube, which could be controlled by other elements within the tube. De Forest's original device was a triode, which could control the flow of electrons to a positively charged plate inside the tube. A zero could then be represented by the absence of an electron current to the plate; the presence of a small but detectable current to the plate represented a one. Vacuum tubes were highly inefficient, required a great deal of space, and needed to be replaced often. Computers of the 1940s and 50s had 18,000 tubes in them and housing all these tubes and cooling the rooms from the heat produced by 18,000 tubes was not cheap. The transistor promised to solve all of these problems and it did so. Transistors, however, had their problems too. The main problem was that transistors, like other electronic components, needed to be soldered together. As a result, the more complex the circuits became, the more complicated and numerous the connections between the individual transistors and the likelihood of faulty wiring increased. In 1958, this problem too was solved by Jack St. Clair Kilby of Texas Instruments. He manufactured the first integrated circuit or chip. A chip is really a collection of tiny transistors which are connected together when the transistor is manufactured. Thus, the need for soldering together large numbers of transistors was practically nullified; now only connections were needed to other electronic components. In addition to saving space, the speed of the machine was now increased since there was a diminished distance that the electrons had to follow. Mainframes to PCs The 1960s saw large mainframe computers become much more common in large industries and with the US military and space program. IBM became the unquestioned market leader in selling these large, expensive, error-prone, and very hard to use machines. A veritable explosion of personal computers occurred in the early 1970s, starting with Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak exhibiting the first Apple II at the First West Coast Computer Faire in San Francisco. The Apple II boasted built-in BASIC programming language, color graphics, and a 4100 character memory for only $1298. Programs and data could be stored on an everyday audio-cassette recorder. Before the end of the fair, Wozniak and Jobs had secured 300 orders for the Apple II and from there Apple just took off. Also introduced in 1977 was the TRS-80. This was a home computer manufactured by Tandy Radio Shack. In its second incarnation, the TRS-80 Model II, came complete with a 64,000 character memory and a disk drive to store programs and data on. At this time, only Apple and TRS had machines with disk drives. With the introduction of the disk drive, personal computer applications took off as a floppy disk was a most convenient publishing medium for distribution of software. IBM, which up to this time had been producing mainframes and minicomputers for medium to large-sized businesses, decided that it had to get into the act and started working on the Acorn, which would later be called the IBM PC. The PC was the first computer designed for the home market which would feature modular design so that pieces could easily be added to the architecture. Most of the components, surprisingly, came from outside of IBM, since building it with IBM parts would have cost too much for the home computer market. When it was introduced, the PC came with a 16,000 character memory, keyboard from an IBM electric typewriter, and a connection for tape cassette player for $1265. By 1984, Apple and IBM had come out with new models. Apple released the first generation Macintosh, which was the first computer to come with a graphical user interface(GUI) and a mouse. The GUI made the machine much more attractive to home computer users because it was easy to use. Sales of the Macintosh soared like nothing ever seen before. IBM was hot on Apple's tail and released the 286-AT, which with applications like Lotus 1-2-3, a spreadsheet, and Microsoft Word, quickly became the favourite of business concerns. That brings us up to about ten years ago. Now people have their own personal graphics workstations and powerful home computers. The average computer a person might have in their home is more powerful by several orders of magnitude than a machine like ENIAC. The computer revolution has been the fastest growing technology in man's history. site link.https://homepage.cs.uri.edu/faculty/wolfe/book/Readings/Reading03.htm If you like my blog then up vote me |

The draftsmen seem to be turning to 3D instead of sticking to the good old 2D pencil drawings, depicting everything from vodka bottles to the frighteningly realistic tarantulas, scaring the boys and girls on the World Wide Web. These drawings are the craze of the now, and it is impossible not to notice them. Whether it is the raw talent or years of practice that make these 3D pencil drawings pop out of the paper as they do, they are nothing short of amazing and represent the true hyper-realism. The artists who produce such pieces are many and growing in number each day, so now would be the perfect time to address this latest trend and its place in the world of art and entertainment. https://d2jv9003bew7ag.cloudfront.net/uploads/Ramon-Bruin-While-SailingTthrough-the-Thoughts-of-My-Imagination-via-ramon-bruin-com.jpg 3D Pencil Drawings – An Optical Illusion? The appeal of 3D pencil drawings lies in the fact that people love to have their eyes tricked. In this type of drawing angle is everything! A stunning image can be seen as a blur of lines and shadows when observed from a different perspective, making our minds work overtime to figure out how did the artist really manage to master the skill of angling and perspective in order to create the drawing. The “Ahhh, so it’s an optical illusion” is probably the most pronounced sentence after the big revelation, which brings us to the origins of 3D drawings – Op Art. Op Art, or optical art, is, as the pretty self-explanatory name says, abstraction based on optical illusions. These types of artworks are usually done in black and white and make the viewer think that there is some type of movement, hidden image, or warping going on. Some say that the origins of Op Art can be traced back to Cubism, Constructivism, Dada, Neo-Impressionism, and Futurism in terms of color and graphic effects while others credit the German school Bauhaus as the ancestor of optical art. It is also considered that Op Art originates from Anamorphosis, a contorted projection that requires the use of special devices in order to see the image, and Trompe l’oeil, a technique that employs realistic imagery to create the impression of a 3D object on a flat surface. Masters of Perspective As we have previously mentioned, a large portion of successful 3D pencil drawings lies in the clever utilization of perspective, and the deep understanding of it. These artists do not rely on their mere talent, they also study hard, do a lot of research, and practice diligently in order to produce a successful and life-like drawing. They use multiple sheets of paper often cut so it would appear as the edge of the depicted object, clever shading, and, the star of the day, angle to give the drawing life of its own and make us scratch our heads and start wondering about what is real and what isn’t. So where do these 3D pencil drawings belong in the ever-growing world of art? Well, they are everywhere! Nowadays, more and more artists are emerging with their hyper-realistic 3D pencil drawings. Although it may not be as big as some other movements yet, 3D art is becoming more and more present, and drawing more and more attention each day. These works have jumped out (pun intended) from DeviantArt, Facebook, and Instagram to the homes of celebrities, sportsmen, politicians, and to the offices of various companies. Furthermore, the popularity of these drawings grows even stronger as more artists opt for depicting the famous singers, actors, and models that seem to jump out of the paper. So, for us, this means that you can probably own a life-like Elton John or David Beckham smiling to you in the comfort of your home. Who are the Artists that Make 3D Pencil Drawings? We know that we cannot possibly cover all the draftsmen and women who show their skill in the 3D drawing world, but some of the most prominent names of this, relatively new, trend are solidifying their statuses as the leaders of the movement each day. Ramon Bruin is a Dutch artist whose invented style ‘Optical Illusionism’ is a blend of drawing and photography, as his works can be best seen when photographed from a particular angle. He uses graphite pencil most times, but in some works, he incorporates the color pencil, acrylic, or ink. Ben Heine is a Belgian artist who creates large-scale 3D drawings. He is famous for stepping into his own art upon completion and takes a series of photographs with him as part of the artwork. Some of his pieces are larger than 13 by 10 feet, and he uses as many as 15 pencils and three charcoal sticks for large dark areas of his compositions. He has exhibited his works around the world, in Belgium, South Korea, Russia, Hong Kong, the UK, Spain, Germany, The Netherlands, France and Italy, among other places. Alessandro Diddi is an Italian draftsman whose works convey the message as old as times: that our eyes can, and will, play tricks on our minds. Sometimes, the eye can make us think that dimensions exist when they are not there and make us perceive his art as tangible. He often cuts the paper to give the impression of edges of his subjects and on multiple occasions uses more than one sheet of paper to create his drawings. Nagai Hideyuki is a Japanese artist who primarily creates sketchbook drawings. Nagai’s dream was to become a cartoonist, but upon seeing Julian Beever’s amazing 3D street art, decided to pursue the multi-dimensional art. However, since drawing on the streets was illegal in his home of Japan, he transferred his talent and ideas into his sketchbooks, for which he only needed a pencil, some paper, and lots and lots of practice, without breaking the law once. Fredo is a Chilean artist who was inspired by the works of great masters such as M.C. Escher, Rembrandt, Beksinski, and Arcimboldo. Fredo’s art was submitted to DeviantArt back when he was only 17 years old, and since then, his popularity among the 3D drawing world has continued to grow. Some of his drawings take from 30 minutes to complete, and some require over a month of work for the final product to be executed. What is next for 3D Pencil Drawings? Since these drawings are still not as recognized as the traditional illustration, and since some consider that they are not really art at all, it will be interesting to see how will these 3D pencil drawings find their moment under the spotlight in the frame of traditional world of art. What is certain is that these works require an immense amount of hard work and practice, and the artists who choose to express their creativity through them will surely continue to fight for their spot in the contemporary art market. With the growing popularity of digital art, it seems that the audiences are turning back to the more traditional techniques as they feel that the computer can never replace the human touch when it comes to art, which is definitely good news for 3D draftsmen and women. We will not get into the personal preferences of the art collectors in terms of what they consider artistically valuable, as there is an old Latin proverb “Suum cuique” or “to each his own”, which fits perfectly with the ongoing debate of whether 3D pencil drawings are worthy to be put into the exhibition spaces of big galleries and sold at famous auction houses. The fact is, the world has gone crazy about these artworks, and we can definitely understand why. site link https://www.widewalls.ch/3d-pencil-drawings/ If you like my blog then up vote me |

| body | Armenian Artist Edgar Artis, uses all sorts of things to incorporate into his drawings. We couldn't resist, but add a few more of his drawings, that don't include foods or drink, to give you a more complete picture of Artis' art. It is a tribute to imagination to see, how he is able to combine so many different items, to enhance his drawings. Have a look below to see the lovely variety. Milk. Press the Image to Enlarge it. | body | t can be frustrating when you feel like your parents are treating your siblings better than you. Before you get too upset, though, recognize that you and your sibling have different interests, hobbies, and skills, and might need to be parented differently. In cases of clear and obvious preferential treatment, try to show your parents their behavior and share how it makes you feel. Heal yourself of the emotional scars you might have after being treated badly by your parents, and seek counselling if necessary. Responding to Parental Favoritism Understand the variation within relationships.[1] Since we’re all different, nobody relates to any two people in exactly the same way. In some cases, a parent might seem to show favor to your sibling. In other cases, or from another point of view, your parent might appear to favor you. It is unrealistic to expect any parent to be completely fair and even-handed in their treatment of you and your sibling. However, there is no excuse for systematic and repeated favoritism of one child over another. Before tackling the issue with your parents, ask yourself whether you're sure your siblings are really being treated better. Sure, they might receive something "extra" in one area of life, but you might receive that kind of special attention in another area. If this is the case, your parents might not really be showing your sibling preferential treatment, but are rather just acknowledging that you and your sibling are two different people with unique wants and needs. Image titled Deal with Parents Treating Other Siblings Better Step 2 2 Stand up for yourself. It’s important to communicate to your parents how you feel when they treat your other siblings better than they treat you.[2] Be honest about your feelings. Whether you’re an adult still dealing with the impact your parents’ behavior had on you or a kid trying to improve your situation, talking to your parents about how they treated your sibling better than they treated you is important. Try starting the conversation by saying something like, "Mom and Dad, I've been thinking a lot about this lately and I need to talk to you about not feeling as important as John." Image titled Deal with Parents Treating Other Siblings Better Step 3 3 Be assertive but not aggressive.[3] Find a quiet moment when you can talk to your parent about their behavior without anyone else interrupting. Say, for instance, “I’m really hurt by the way you’re treating me compared to my sibling.” Avoid confrontational “you” statements (like “You don’t care about me”) and focus on your feelings with “I” statements (like “I’m hurt by the way I’m being treated”). Cite specific examples to illustrate your point. For example, you could continue the conversation by saying, "It seems like you go to all John’s football games, but you only went to one of my volleyball games last season. Why is that?” Finish with a direct request such as, "I really want you both to attend at least three of my at home games this season. I feel that is only fair." If you can’t think of specific instances where your parents treated you poorly relative to how they treated your sibling, start looking for these occasions and write them down over the course of a few days. Then, when you’re armed with evidence, talk to your parents about the situation. Be honest when expressing your feelings. Don’t get into an argument. If your parents get angry or upset with you, don't fight them. Stay calm and excuse yourself from the conversation if you don’t think you’re making progress or if you feel too frustrated. Don’t blow up, cuss them out, and call them names. Instead, maintain a level tone and speak slowly. Choose your words with care.[4] If you feel upset by the conversation, then try taking a break and do some deep breathing. Try saying something like, “I will be right back. I just need a few minutes.” You might have to talk to your parents more than once about this issue. If they are unwilling to listen the first time you bring it up, try again some other time. Stay focused on the subject. Don’t let your parents turn the conversation around on you or excuse their actions. Don’t expect your parents to change.[5] In the best-case scenario, you parents will realize that they’ve been treating you badly compared to your siblings and resolve to change. But they might not agree with your view, even if you draw attention to their favoritism. They might deny showing preferential treatment, or might admit that they show preferential treatment and try to justify it. In this case, prepare for frustration and unhappy feelings. Remember, you cannot change other people. You can only change yourself. https://www.wikihow.com/Deal-with-Parents-Treating-Other-Siblings-Better If you like my blog then up vote me |
