titleGetting my COVID 19 vaccine as a doctor in Mexico
bodyThis year I earned a Bachelors Degree in General Medicine and finished my social service on January 2021. Because I did not receive my degree as soon as I finished my social service, I was not considered a doctor yet and because I was done with my social service already I was not considered a student anymore. I was in this position where I no longer could receive a vaccine as a student and was not a formal doctor. Needless to say that I was starting out my social service when pandemics hit Mexico and throughout my ENTIRE social service I was in the lead of those who received the very first COVID patients as I was positioned in a Public General Hospital where I live. Saddly, after investing time, hard-work, my safety and my family's safety, I was not going to receive my vaccine dosis because of some paperwork and a title. ![IMG_8ED31BDEC53E-1.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmXwXZvCJSX36rQzvnr8u8DwtpoSP5EtCyAgrXBrPxxkA4/IMG_8ED31BDEC53E-1.jpeg) Luckily my AWESOME university.. Universidad Autónoma de Baja California was one of the main locations for vaccination. The entire process for population on the 18-19 age group was so easy, they could have asked if I was a doctor.. because if I was they might have denied the vaccine, as many vaccination locations did to some of my peers, because vaccination for health workers was an entire different process and allegedly we would take away the vaccine for the general population. ![IMG_4755.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmTm3aaw3zMpun8MHHPPMR8aHQ4Fn2BBWYdjmGuqrMB2Ct/IMG_4755.jpeg) It blew my mind that facing a pandemic and going against the clock, some people were not making this process easier for those who were risking their lives to serve during an outbreak of a disease. I got my vaccine a random day I was doing administrative paperwork for my degree and it only took me around 5 minutes in the line and the other 20 minutes of waiting to see if any adverse effects of the vaccine where to develop. I feel lucky and thankful I did not have to wait any longer or do extra paperwork in order to be able to be protected against COVID complications and hopefully Mexico and every other country get all of their population vaccinated at the end of 2021.

titleI got my degree in General Medicine, is residency my ultimate goal?
bodyHello Steemit community, it´s been a large-rough path ever since the last post. I have finished Med School.. 10 semesters of theory, 1 year of clinical rotations (internship) and 1 year of social service. What should come next is; MEDICAL RESIDENCY! ![IMG_4754.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmaoFxzec61S36xBxpEGxVQWDdkLrAoy5rfZANS2Q8HFKw/IMG_4754.jpeg) Residency here in Mexico comes with getting to do what you specifically liked during med school, but also comes with a heavy load of responsibilities, VERY SMALL paycheck, sacrifice in all social or personal aspects and sometimes comes with judgement if you decide not to choose one. Medical Residency for us Mexican doctors imply that we have a Bachelors Degree in General Medicine and then we go through a 3-5 year theoretical+clinical course. When residency comes to an end, the degree obtained is called Specialty, which is equivalent to a degree course very different from a Masters Degree of a PhD (which I know in the US, Medical Specialty is equivalent of having a M.D. title). Therefore, why doctors and mentors push graduates into a mindset of success equals residency? ![240948248_1015462852563381_6312205058229174573_n.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdUzUd6Uaj8Th8pBNe5hcZtCcVt4SRAxpKF8uEPtdtHSb/240948248_1015462852563381_6312205058229174573_n.jpg) My way of thinking is that Postgraduate courses in Mexico for Medical Students are a MUST because first level health services a.k.a. General Physicians have lost credibility and respect from the population, their salaries have dropped among other things, because of the pharmacy industry and now a days a general consultation goes around $20 mexican pesos up to $500 (if you are lucky enough and do not work for a pharmacy), this leaves no option for general physicians other than work in private clinics, pharmacies, and factories with very low salaries OR opt for going through an extended training as a postgraduate. ![IMG_B3E1D250D247-1.jpeg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmacYpqWM4vjr2bQN4AkRRBN19pFJN4ox89y6oStpn5bNk/IMG_B3E1D250D247-1.jpeg) Residencies are very cheap in comparison to other countries.. $3.000 mxn for test application (Examen Nacional de Residencias Mexicanas), $ 3.000 for the CTO summary books, and there are courses to prepare candidates that cost up to $50.000 mxn, also you have to buy your fly ticket and hotel for the day you will be taking the test. All in all, this might not compare at all to the invest needed for residency applicants in other countries. At the end of the day all residents will be earning around 7,000 mxn for biweekly pay, with 36hr shifts every 3 days, 10 day vacations every semester and formal specialists can make around 20,000 biweekly if working at a public institution. ![240955235_554060512318646_4453767087110398322_n.jpg](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmej53dJiTGUDfuQT2C4dF3vhY3LHXCS4Q5g4F7jZGoafk/240955235_554060512318646_4453767087110398322_n.jpg) But is this the only way? Why do Mexican doctors only choose a Specialty as their way of success? What I have seen while sharing experiences with doctors from California is that doctors who have studied in the States, first go through a science field degree in order to get into med school, they also are forced to get involved in more research projects that us Mexicans and at the end of the day, when they reach a specialty, earning further degrees is somewhat more common of that in Mexico. Masters degree, Doctorate, Post doctorate titles are not as common for Mexican Medical Students to dream of... I have asked some of my peers and they seem to think of the former courses as merely research, administrative, less prestigious or not useful because ALTHOUGH YOU ARE BETTER PREPARED, YOU ARE NOT PAYED BETTER. Mexico needs more doctors doing research, going through postgraduate degrees other than specialties and government needs to invest more on this field in order to make a profound change in how enterprises, hospitals and general population economically remunerate well educated and prepared professionals.

Mexico needs more doctors doing research, going through postgraduate degrees other than specialties and government needs to invest more on this field in order to make a profound change in how enterprises, hospitals and general population economically remunerate well educated and prepared professionals.

bodyI would choose Canada over the other two options due to an increase of skilled workers needed, job opportunities and life quality shown on social media and documentaries, because Canada is a country that a lot of people around the world choose to migrate to, this makes Canada a diversely rich country with lots of languages, cultures, mindsets and that less likely will promote racism, antisemitism and discrimination

titleI got my degree in General Medicine, is residency my ultimate goal?
bodyHello Steemit community, it´s been a large-rough path ever since the last post.
