| title | The High Tech - no work, world; Responding to New York Post Article |
| body | I find this article highly significant, because it makes the point I’ve been making that everything that can be automated will be automated. And everything that can be monetized through social media will displace traditional modes of marketing and distribution. Amazon was just the beginning. The upshot of both—fewer and fewer jobs—world wide. The corollary is that these unstoppable trends will mean that there will never be a restoration of pre-internet jobs (let alone pre-industrial jobs). The problems that both political parties address are the wrong ones. The “enemy” isn’t immigration, or foreign workers, or even job training—its automation, technology and the internet which know no borders. The problem is already afflicting every developed and developing nation. NOBODY, here and abroad, has a solution. The social disruption from having a workforce that is going to become exponentially larger than what will be required will cause a cataclysmic reaction that no traditional program or leader can now successfully address. This is far more significant that modernization that came with the industrial revolution. That progress led to more and more jobs. But this revolution will steadily diminish the workforce. Air B&B, no hotels. Automated cars—no commercial drivers. Go the WaWa or Applebees—ordering through touch screens eliminate order takers—replaced by a small number of runners who bring out the orders. Self-checkouts eliminate cashiers. And these are LOW end jobs filled by people who really need them. Talked to a robot lately? (Hey, Siri.) Call center jobs are disappearing even in India. No humans required except the programmers. But it is also reaching upwards into all even highly specialized fields. And the trend is unstoppable. A wise person once said “An insoluble problem is not a problem It is a fact.” The quick solution: global catastrophe which will reduce the world to pre-technological levels (unlikely). Rising oceans? Plague? An asteroid? Don’t hold your breath, though if you’re a cynic, you can hope. The alternative may be a radical decoupling of wages and productivity, or even work itself. Already some (small, mostly Scandinavian) countries are talking about a guaranteed wage for all citizens divorced from actual work. Some will call this Marxism on steroids—taxes on the huge profits of the agglomerating industries to distribute to all the rest. Of course, capitalist countries will find this anathema. But nobody has yet to come up with another business model that will account for millions of displaced workers who, even if they had the exotic skills needed, would still find number of jobs were a fraction of the available people to fill them. You got a better idea? The world needs you! Does this remind you of anti-Bellum south when slaves did the work while the plantation owners hunted foxes and danced the quadrille? (It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood or Mar-a-Lago...) Machines and the harnessed internet will replace slaves, but the bounty this engenders will not trickle down to the unemployed (not that it has trickled down to the employed, either). All the rioting and blaming (the Jews, no doubt, eventually) and political tantrums will not alter this trend. Onward to Mars. Have a nice day. "title": "The High Tech - no work, world; Responding to New York Post Article",
"body": "I find this article highly significant, because it makes the point I’ve been making that everything that can be automated will be automated. And everything that can be monetized through social media will displace traditional modes of marketing and distribution. Amazon was just the beginning. The upshot of both—fewer and fewer jobs—world wide.\n \nThe corollary is that these unstoppable trends will mean that there will never be a restoration of pre-internet jobs (let alone pre-industrial jobs). But this revolution will steadily diminish the workforce.\n \nAir B&B, no hotels. A wise person once said “An insoluble problem is not a problem It is a fact.” \n \nThe quick solution: global catastrophe which will reduce the world to pre-technological levels (unlikely). Rising oceans? Plague? An asteroid? Don’t hold your breath, though if you’re a cynic, you can hope.\n \nThe alternative may be a radical decoupling of wages and productivity, or even work itself. The world needs you!\n \nDoes this remind you of anti-Bellum south when slaves did the work while the plantation owners hunted foxes and danced the quadrille? (It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood or Mar-a-Lago...) Machines and the harnessed internet will replace slaves, but the bounty this engenders will not trickle down to the unemployed (not that it has trickled down to the employed, either). All the rioting and blaming (the Jews, no doubt, eventually) and political tantrums will not alter this trend. Onward to Mars.\n \nHave a nice day.\n\nNYP ARTICLE LINK: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/27/business/dealbook/1-billion-for-dollar-shave-club-why-every-company-should-worry.html?ref=business",
