When the price of copper falls, for example, so may output, and vice versa.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>But silver is a rare exception.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>That's because silver production is overwhelmingly the result of miners pursuing other minerals such as gold and copper. In 2018, 74% of silver production was the result of this so-called secondary production, according to the Silver Institute.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>When gold and copper miners make decisions to increase or decrease their mining activities, they look at the price of copper or gold, not the price of silver.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>The net result is that silver supplies don't jump around much in response to changing prices. That can make a silver rally much bigger than a gold rally.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>The Gold-Silver Price Ratio</p>\n<p>Silver prices are also low now when compared to gold using something known as the gold-silver price ratio. Currently one ounce of gold trades for 87 times the value of one ounce of silver.&nbsp;</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>Historically, that ratio has been in the range of 40 to 80, says Matthew Miller, a mining analyst at New York-based research firm CFRA. Or in other words, gold is now trading at a premium valuation to silver based on history.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>That doesn't mean gold prices are going to drop -- this time at least.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>Miller says gold should hit $1,500 a troy ounce by the end of the year, up from $1,430 recently. The reason for that is multifaceted, but some of the major catalysts are U.S.-China trade-war worries, rising inflation and other geopolitical uncertainties.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>Such a move should help lift silver prices as well. The chart below shows the two commodities since 2010. Gold has shot higher recently to its highest levels since 2013. The chart below shows how this ratio has surged over the past few years. The ratio has recently hit 90, while its average level since 1990 is right around 67. Gold, since then, looks to have been the better investment. It has shown a much higher average return with a higher percentage of returns positive. Also, it has been much less volatile than silver. The table below shows that the performance of gold when the ratio is high isn't much worse than its typical performance. The average return is still above 6% per year, and more than half of the returns have been positive.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>Story continues</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>As expected, silver does outperform after an extremely high gold/silver ratio reading. It averages a gain of close to 10% over the next year when the gold/silver ratio is high. Over half the returns, however, are still negative. In this case, you would expect gold to outperform silver, which would increase the ratio to normal levels. This is exactly what has happened in the past. When the ratio gets below 55, gold averages a gain of almost 12%, with 67.5% of the returns positive, over the next year.</p>\n<p><br></p>\n<p>Not only that, silver performs miserably.
