titleRecap of Crypto Valley Trip #2
body*Zug, Switzerland* About three weeks ago, I — along with 25 other people from over a dozen countries — traveled to Zug, Switzerland aka Crypto Valley to spend three days exploring the decentralized future. The quarterly event — the first of which debuted in August — was conceptualized by Jeremy Epstein, Ken Berger, and Marcelo Garcia. Highlighted in Fred Wilson’s blog back in July, the Crypto Valley Trip brought our group — the Crypto Explorers — to three different sites over the course of three days. To say that demand for this event was sky high would be an understatement. Five of the attendees in my group were individuals who were waitlisted from the inaugural event in August —yay for persistence! Hundreds of applications poured in this time around given the overwhelmingly positive reviews from the attendees of the inaugural trip, as well as the skyrocketing popularity of Bitcoin and ICOs in just the few months since. The high value attendees in this second iteration represented a variety of backgrounds, skill sets, and overlapping interests. The group included hedge fund managers, early stage VC partners, startup founders, digital nomads (like yours truly), influencers, traders, miners, and more. There was a lot of reciprocal value exchange to go around over the course of those three days. The first day was spent at the Zug headquarters of Lakeside Partners AG. We listened to those partners and other speakers talk about the Crypto Valley Association (CVA)in Zug and the canton’s efforts to attract companies and talent through their friendly regulatory and tax environment coupled with their deep knowledge of the blockchain industry. Regulatory agencies like the Swiss Financial Markets Supervisory Authority (FINMA) work in close cooperation with the CVA and now work to formally approve new ICOs for projects registered in Switzerland. We also listened to a presentation from Melonport, one of the few crypto projects that actually has the product team based out of Zug, talk about the project’s efforts to disintermediate the hedge fund business model, which includes a goal to reduce the cost of starting a hedge fund to be as low as $100 — ambition! Following the first day of presenters, our group took a funicular up the Zugerberg Mountain and had a fondue dinner at Restaurant Zugerberg with a spectacular view of the area. ![Zugerberg.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmVr58vDpaUL4s8T3mjWQLfLYKHSwUdBw2xima6w6yKgtT/Zugerberg.jpg) Restaurant Zugerberg Day two of the event took place inside of Huwilerturm, a 16th Century defense tower which made for a truly memorable experience. ![CVT.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmPL1Gb5rwvZTVDfS6G7UVhRiCD6PGDufAcARc1J9LZtH6/CVT.jpg) Huwilerturm Our group listened in on several presentations, including one from Stephan Karpischek of Etherisc — a decentralized insurance platform that promises to issue policies and compensate claims autonomously via smart contracts. Stephan made an announcement for the first time publicly that Etherisc was testing their product by offering the option to purchase travel insurance for those purchasing flight travel to Cancun for Devcon. In the event a flight were to be delayed or cancelled, triggering a condition that satisfies an insurance claim, the smart contract would automatically compensate the insured party within the same day and without requiring a third party intermediary (i.e. customer representative). How cool! ![Stefan from Etherisc.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmVhvvB6Gtkz38b4JLFigDnw2ES2pWkmEb8YPYeNeS8U74/Stefan%20from%20Etherisc.jpg) *Stephan Karpischek from Etherisc ![medieval scholars.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmXgBRwV1mbmceKtt4Tuvc8VcJ6n9UcUm9iJnjdTnow7Xm/medieval%20scholars.jpg) *Medieval scholars for a day Other speakers included Mathias Bucher from Diamond Coin, Max Niebylski and Marcelo McAndrew from Gladius, Guido Bulgheroni (government official) from the Canton of Zug, Jean-Baptiste Decorzent from Everex, among others. After wrapping up the day-long event, our group walked over to nearby Lake Zug to observe an unforgettable sunset, followed by wine and hor d’oeuvres at Rathaus Zug, where Jeremy Epstein (President of CVT) and Max and Marcelo from Gladius both gave presentations. ![Lake Zug.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQme1CwZ7rV2GkMp8iekdkXfER76RrFJaQicy9VF9g862Dn/Lake%20Zug.jpg) *Spectacular sunset at Lake Zug ![Jeremy Epstein.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmVDboM2BMGEbKAV6MkL577yZtT9BzcrAJmVbAbRWJH6yg/Jeremy%20Epstein.jpg) *Jeremy Epstein presenting at Rathaus Zug Day three offered another day of presenters, though this time in Zurich, not Zug, at the Swisscom business campus. Swisscom is 51% owned by the Swiss Confederation and, through a subsidiary arm, invests in token projects while also offering full advisory services for token sales. The campus was anointed with a spacious meeting room and drinks and refreshments. Highlights included a very insightful discussion about ICOs and the scalability challenges of blockchain protocols from Daily Fintech co-founder Efi Pylarinou, a wide-ranging interview about blockchain for enterprise between Jeremy Epstein and Swisscom Blockchain AG CEO Daniel Haudenschild, and illuminating insights about regulation from MME law firm partners Thomas Linder and Andreas Glarner. ![Swisscom 2.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmUfCBSdRLyfSVpAV4kUQbwzSa8zPjiHcVFxHyhk3rSaY1/Swisscom%202.jpg) *Swisscom Business Campus ![Efi Swisscom.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmQt8HCChJse7sX6ybU57iE1fAb2yRcKqakWsc5b2niy4y/Efi%20Swisscom.jpg) *Efi Pylarinou from Daily Fintech Following the day of listening to speakers providing us with actionable information, we held a group thinking session to recap some lessons learned from the experience. This was just as valuable to me personally as listening to the presenters. Afterwards, we walked over to the Zurich office of MME law firm to enjoy cocktails, beer, and snacks on their extraordinary rooftop terrace. We were fortunate to enjoy some agreeable weather considering autumn temperatures can be unpredictable in this part of Europe. ![MME Law Firm Terrace.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmTRQ2N8kAKmpKybZrv317NbptQgtwDYkzLESvN52TUG5a/MME%20Law%20Firm%20Terrace.jpg) *Enjoying some beverages on the rooftop terrace at MME Zurich Later, we then walked over to Hiltl to enjoy a wide-ranging and delicious vegetarian dinner — words I never thought I’d say. As it turns out, Hiltl also happens to be the oldest vegetarian restaurant in the world, established in 1898. ![Hiltl 1.jpg](https://steemitimages.com/DQmdwn4goqqphBq72BLVEe3648GE6wP9jUQps3mQiiKDg3Q/Hiltl%201.jpg) *Dining and fascinating conversation at Hiltl My general sentiment about the experience both during and following the trip was a feeling of immense *gratitude*. I actually feel like I underpaid for the experience. The organizers — Jeremy Epstein, Ken Berger, and Marcelo Garcia — clearly put a lot of thought, effort and coordination into making this event meaningful and valuable for the participants; and let me tell you, it wasn’t for the money. The cost of attendance was too modest for that to be an incentive. The real motivation was to pay it forward and put together something special. To borrow some terminology from my angel investing world, I felt like I “10x’d” on some relationships. In fact, through our official Slack community, private Telegram groups, and old-fashioned e-mail, I am still in frequent contact with the organizers and fellow attendees. This experience was another affirmation in the wisdom of the adage to invest in yourself by pursuing opportunities to share experiences with other value-add people. These are exciting times in the crypto world, and the Crypto Valley Trip compounded that feeling for me even more. Applications for the next trip in late January 2018 are currently being accepted. *Photo credits to fellow CVT alum Mahoney Turnbull. titleChina's Golden Goose: Dragon ICO
body

In the latest issue of my newsletter, I had mentioned an upcoming last-minute trip to Hong Kong that would promise BIG news for the cryptocurrency space. Well, that statement turned out to be half right. Cambridge Analytica invited me to this historic event but the company they outsourced the travel logistics to made the unfortunate mistake of booking my flight from Chicago to Hong Kong in economy.

Blame it on miscommunication, and a devastating earthquake in Mexico Citythat made my main point of contact for the trip unreachable (she’s okay btw). I’m no drama king, but I’ve actually done the nonstop flight from Chicago to Hong Kong in business class before, on a spacious sleeper seat no less, and even that was tiring. I knew there would be no way I’d be able to handle two 16-hour flights in economy (return flight was due in less than three days from the arrival flight) in such a short time. One needs to also consider the drastic time zone differences between North America and Asia. To add insult to injury, there would be no WiFi as well, which for me is simply not an option given my constant communicating with co-investors and project teams from around the world. So, I stayed home.Well…onto the part that’s held true….this is BIG news!

Dragon is the largest ICO to date, and is tokenizing the gambling industry and its supporting assets, in partnership with all of the casino junkets in Macau (including Sands, Wynn, MGM, Venetian, Grand Lisboa, etc). This will be the biggest ICO globally at a $500M cap with 85% already committed. Dragon has a Chinese government license for exchange into fiat (the only such cryptocurrency project in China) and will lead the charge in Macau becoming the epicenter of cryptocurrency and blockchain projects for all of China due to the mainland’s tightening regulations.

The real draw for attending this historic event was the networking. Following the press release in Hong Kong in the morning (local time), there would be a networking lunch and the facilitation of one-on-one meetings between attendees. Afterwards, attendees would head to Macau for some partying in the evening. Some of the people in town for the Dragon launch included Roger Ver, the Tezos founder(s), investment bankers and VCs, and many other insiders. Here are some pics sent to me by a friend who attended:

Helicopter ferrying attendees between Hong Kong and Macau

Dragon Pearl Hotel and Casino — the world’s first floating hotel that can traverse international waters (if it needs to). Sounds like a cruise liner :)

Given the Chinese government’s direct involvement in this project, people expect this news to moderate some of the FUD the media has been reporting about China. My thoughts now are on the Dragon ICO itself. Casinos in Macau are BIG business and if Dragon tokens are to have guaranteed utility in those casinos — as well as liquidity for fiat conversion — a much higher valuation is all but assured (disclaimer: I am not a financial advisor, so do not take that as financial advice).

I’ll be sharing any insight I have on this ICO with my Telegram community. Follow me on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube for updates on this opportunity and other crypto-related projects.

body

Cryptocurrency Scams and Hacks: How You Can Stay Safe

“Protect Ya Neck!”

Those prophetic words from the Wu-Tang Clan in the early 90s couldn’t be more prescient right now. With all the unprecedented growth seen in the world of cryptocurrencies this year, and the fear, greed and uncertainty such volatility is bound to bring, such heady times attracts many individuals seeking opportunities to gain at the expense of others.

In June 2017, the cryptocurrency market overall reached an all-time high of $116 billion. The follow month, the market saw a plummeting to an overall cap as low as $60 billion! That’s a lot of money exiting the ecosystem in a very short period of time. Many cryptocurrency investors, some of whom are relatively inexperienced in investing generally, are not emotionally comfortable with that kind of volatility. Some of these investors end up panic selling while others are all too eager to buy into a coin that seems to be bucking the downward trend. Doom and gloom prophets gain more prominence and, inevitably, scammers execute on some incredibly calculated operations that prove to be successful in stealing lots of money.

One of the scams to emerge during times of heightened worry are the “pump and dump” scam. One notable scam that recently proved successful was the pumping and dumping of Chaincoin, which has been trading on low volume exchanges for years at the bottom of the barrel. On July 1, 2017 however, an organized cartel started buying up Chaincoin in volume when it was trading at 7 cents. Two weeks later, Chaincoin reached an all-time high of $6.59, generating a 9,300% ROI from the time the pump started. Very quickly afterwards, the dumping started in earnest but as of today, July 24th, Chaincoin is still up more than 1,400% from the time the pump commenced.Almost immediately after the cartel began dumping Chaincoin, they seized on a new target, Arctic Coin. According to a message I read, the reason this was being targeted was because it was a low cap, Proof-of-Stake coin that had developers willing to redesign the roadmap and website to be more English-focused (the website was Russian). The goal according to the sender of the message was to get the price from 10 cents to over $1 in two weeks.

The interesting thing about operations like this is they can evade detection given how volatile cryptocurrencies are. At this stage, 100% or greater gains in a day are feasible, as is the converse. Websites like Coinmarketcap.com track these coins and even feature the top 20 gainers in valuation in their trending section. In addition to pump and dump operations, there’s also been hacking of websites during token sales that have emerged. Recently, Coindash had its website hacked and a hacker placed a different ethereum wallet address as the ICO contribution address, netting millions of dollars in the process. Now, Coindash is doing the right thing by honoring the contributions made to that wallet address during the ICO, but this is nevertheless concerning. Token sale investors are worried about the value of their investment was Coindash tokens (CDT) begin trading on exchanges. Coindash has recognized this concern and created a loyalty program designed to incentivize token holders to not dump their tokens.

One of the salient lessons from these recent events is to be choosier in your investment strategy. Resist the temptation to chase coins when their prices are pumping. Do not invest in coins solely for that reason. You want to focus on coins that trade on more popular exchanges with higher trading volume. For those of you getting more active in the space and investing larger amounts of money, consider getting a Ledger Nano S. I have the Ledger Nano S and what I love about it is that it supports many of the prominent tokens (bitcoin, litecoin, all erc-20 tokens, etc) but also is not connected to any severs (cold storage) and has unbeatable security features. The Ledger Nano is the equivalent of a safe for which only you know the password and only have three chances to use it before it disables. The peace of mind is priceless and the cost is worth every penny. If you liked this post, then please leave a comment.

titleCryptocurrency 101: What Noobs Need to Know
body

By now, most of you reading this post has heard of cryptocurrencies. Surely, you’ve heard of Bitcoin which has been lavished with international media attention due to factors like being the world’s best performing currency for the past three years and for unprecedented explosive growth fueled by speculation and global economic uncertainty.

Undoubtedly, many of you who have sat on the sidelines watching this gold rush have thought to yourselves, ‘why didn’t I act sooner?’ You might even be thinking it’s too late now and that the lion’s share of the action has already passed.Well, fortunately for the readers, I’m here to tell you otherwise. My goal in making this post is to get you to understand that cryptocurrencies have a very bullish future and that the best days – for investors especially – are ahead of us! I’m going to teach you how to win by developing strategies and criteria to help you chart your own path to success. Perhaps the most important lesson to understand when it comes to investing is that investing is personal. Many people coming into this space are attracted by the stories about people becoming overnight millionaires; the guy in Norway who bought $27 worth of Bitcoin back in 2009 and didn’t pay it any mind until, fast-forward a few years later, he noticed mainstream news about Bitcoin and then checked his wallet which now had almost $1 million worth of Bitcoin. That is a story of incredible good fortune and naturally inspires others to make bitcoin investment decisions AFTER the fact – reactive. As mentioned earlier, when it comes to investing we should consider that everyone starts at a certain place with unique circumstances. These circumstances must be taken into consideration when making decisions about money. The type of investment that might make sense for you, your friend, or someone you may have heard about may not be the best approach for you. You should consider your own situation and use that as a basis for thinking about what to invest in and when; because one of the things to keep in mind about cryptocurrencies is there’s a lot of volatility and that’s why there’s a lot of opportunities to make money, but you can also lose money too.Another important factor to consider is that many of these blockchain projects will likely fail. These first mover projects with ambitious use cases are not going to be successful simply because they seem visionary. Most will fail. I would even wager that none of the top ten cryptocurrencies in market cap size today will be in the top ten list in 3-4 years. We should have a healthy dose of skepticism about the viability of these projects and invest and trade accordingly. My background in cryptocurrencies is unique. One of the things I want to emphasize is that I’m not some average Joe who decided in the past couple of months to start blogging about cryptocurrencies when they’re the latest hot thing. I have a lot of skin in the game because I took some “big shots” – invested a lot of money – into various cryptocurrencies (particularly promising projects with lower valuations, suggesting room for growth. I also networked aggressively and participated in several pre-sales and ICOs. Presales require that you have a minimum amount of money to invest that is too substantial for most crypto investors ($50,000 in the case of one presale I participated in called Civic).Sometimes you get discounts depending on the terms and sometimes you don’t. In the event there isn’t a discount, the main benefit from doing the presale is getting a guaranteed allocation before the ICO happens. In addition to those endeavors, I’ve also attended conferences. I was an attendee at the first ever token summit in New York City back in May, which was just a couple of months ago and a phenomenal experience. One of my favorite things about the crypto space now is the accessibility of project teams. In ordinary investing, let’s say with the stock market, I can’t just call up the CEO of Snapchat and say, “hey man, tell me what you guys are doing behind the scenes and give me some information that I can possibly use to help better inform my investment decisions.” You know that’s just not going to happen; and I’m not even talking about insider trading, but simply normal business activities I may want to have an update on. I don’t have easy access in those kind of situations, but with crypto it’s different. Any one of you can go on Twitter, join Slack or Telegram groups and, in a lot of cases, you’ll see members of the founding team, if not the founder, participating in these kinds of discussions. They are incredible networking opportunities as well.At the Token Summit, I was able to meet some of the special people that I was following on YouTube, namely Tai Zen and Leon Fu – class acts; they took me and some of their other followers out to dinner, including one of my good friends who I travelled to the conference with, Ian Ballina. Some of you may have seen his content; he’s given a lot of insightful information about ICOs. One of Ian’s videos even went viral: “How to make millions and ICOs.” We had a blast at dinner and I must recommend to those of you who have the opportunity, attend conferences in your area and get out and meet people in the space. The information and contacts that you receive really pays for itself ten times over.

Now, my story as far as how I got into crypto shouldn’t even count because my first exposure was way back in 2012, which makes me a decorated vet in crypto years. Back then there weren’t altcoins, US exchanges or a token economy. To buy bitcoin, I would meet with people in strip malls and give them cash in exchange for bitcoin they would send to my personal wallet. There wasn’t any sophisticated investor angle then, just pure lunacy. There was no intimation then that bitcoin would evolve to what we’ve seen in the years since – renown for being the world’s best performing currency for three consecutive years and an increasingly attractive store of value as an alternative to fiat. Back then, it was practically a hobby. Then came the Mt. Gox hack…. and that was significant because Mt. Gox at the time was the largest Bitcoin exchange in the world and the hack led to series of panic sells. Following Mt. Gox, Bitcoin had a three-year period where it’s all time high in 2014 wasn’t surpassed until 2017. I was one of the panic sellers and sold all my bitcoin…at a profit.Fast forward to 2016, I meet someone who tells me about this crypto fund that he’s been managing informally and just how well it was doing. The returns he was telling me sounded like a Disney movie. I asked him: “what’s in your fund? What can you tell me that I can look up and see if this makes sense?” He then told me about Ethereum, which at the time was only $10 per token. I bit the bullet and threw $1,000 into Ethereum at those prices just to test it out. Well, in a few short months, that $1,000 investment turned into $5,000. Realizing a gain for myself, I started doing more research and talked to some other friends who also jumped on the bandwagon. Crypto became a religion for us and we were researching it all day, every day, understanding the many different projects and all of their interesting use cases (i.e. Storj and Sia in the case of decentralized cloud storage on the blockchain, or Ripple’s goal to improve liquidity for the banks vis-à-vis cross border transactions). This new world was fascinating. After flirting with day trading for some time, which was ultimately unprofitable, we realized that we were entering a period of unprecedented fast growth of the crypto market. After the Ethereum win, I started adding more money into crypto, starting with $10,000, and then I upped my contributions to a pretty significant amount of money. The timing was perfect because when I invested more capital, the market cap for cryptos grew from $30 billion to over $110 billion in just two months! The portfolios of my friends and I grew in lockstep, closely tracing the market. I really think a chimpanzee at that time could have just thrown darts at a wall and hit a randomly assorted list of project names and made money. What a truly extraordinary event! Looking back, the mistake my friends and I made were not having a profit taking strategy and loss-limiting strategy. To date, that period of intense market growth result in an all-time high (ATH) for my portfolio, but I only have sexy Blockfolio (app) screenshots to show for it. In crypto investing, I like to recoup initial once I reach a 1x and then let the house money ride. That way you limit or eliminate emotion because you are just leaving in the profits to ride the wave. A general maxim that I follow is for every 1x, I skim 1/3 to 1/2 of profits. I like to sell when I can, not when I have to. For losses, I like exiting out of an investment entirely when my positions are heading southward of a 20% loss. If you’re wrong, admit to it early! I find that this approach is sustainable for me, and my rest is better too. In closing, this is an extraordinary time to invest in cryptocurrencies. I’m not a financial advisor, and don’t play one on the internet, but even with a small amount of money, it’s probably a good idea to invest and realize a gain. Once that happens, you will most likely take a keener interest in investing and commit more time and resources into this endeavor. Get out there and meet others the space by attending conferences, local bitcoin meetups, and engage with others online via Reddit, Bitcointalk Forum, Slack, and Telegram. If you have more personal questions for your unique considerations, let me know by dropping me a line at [email protected]. Surely, you’ve heard of Bitcoin which has been lavished with international media attention due to factors like being the world’s best performing currency for the past three years and for unprecedented explosive growth fueled by speculation and global economic uncertainty.
\n

\n
\n
Storj and Sia in the case of decentralized cloud storage on the blockchain, or Ripple’s goal to improve liquidity for the banks vis-à-vis cross border transactions). titleBook Review: Angel: How to Invest in Technology Startups by Jason Calacanis
body

How to Invest in Technology Startups – Advice from an Angel Investor Who Turned $100,000 into $100,000,000

This new book from Hall of Fame angel investor Jason Calacanis is another inspirational underdog story. Brooklyn-bred Calacanis was not someone destined for the world of angel investing. Calacanis grew up in the working-class Bay Ridge area of Brooklyn to a family of humble circumstances. As a C-student and psychology major while studying at Fordham University, nothing about Calacanis’ upbringing intimated the rocket ship success he would eventually come to realize during his working years after college.Getting his first taste of success with his dot com era publication, the Silicon Alley Reporter, which documented New York’s emerging tech scene. Calacanis then founded Weblogs which was eventually bought out by AOL for $30 million after only 18 months in operation. Calacanis then began his career as an Angel investor. The lessons learned from his trials and tribulations during this part of his life.My favorite thing about this book is how applicable many of the lessons are to broader areas of life. Whether you’re a single mom, college student, budding entrepreneur, or a serious investor, Calacanis’ logical framework for evaluating deals and sizing up individuals have broader applications for people in general who are interested in finding ways to optimize their time for maximum value.Even better, Angel gives those who feel intimidated by the big money world of venture capital investing an accessible game plan for getting their start. Calacanis’ advice really makes understanding and even becoming personally involved in angel investing attainable to broader groups of people. As a cryptocurrency investor, I found many of the conceptual metrics in the angel investing world directly applicable to my goals in cryptocurrency investing. The lingo was 1:1 in many instances, with Calacanis habitually throwing out terms familiar to avid crypto investors like “10x” or “100x” when discussing ROI on an investment. Personally, I like his application of “deal memos” which I plan to use when evaluating projects to invest in. The way a deal memo works in sum is you write down the things you like about a project as well as the things you don’t like, and then you revisit that memo at some point in the future to see what you may have gotten right and wrong. The goal of this activity is to document your lessons learned and identify patterns that you can use to inform your criterion for evaluating future deals.I also like how Calacanis advocated syndicates through platforms like Angel List as a way of giving smaller investors access to deals by big investors like Calacanis. This reminds of pools that cryptocurrency investors form to gain access to presales, which often have high minimum investment amounts like $50,000 or more. Additionally, diversifying an amount of capital, say $10,000, in equal increments, say $1,000, across multiple investments (10 in this case), is useful for the cryptocurrency investor. You only need one of these to do a 20x or 100x to cover for any of the duds. Participating in many deals and allocating a smaller amount of capital to each one is better than allocating larger amounts of capital in fewer deals as a general matter.A polarizing figure due to his brash Brooklyn-style abrasiveness, Calacanis is certainly not the kind of individual that will appeal to everyone. For me, I see him as a champion of the little guy who is honest about his insecurities (i.e. not having been born into money) and is even ready to acknowledge the advantages he’s had being born who he was during this time in history. In that regard, he is correct. Many of us take for granted the freedoms and opportunities we enjoy that are unavailable to the clear majority of the world’s people today, and utterly impossible for anyone who lived in previous generations because of the technological progress made since. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to have an accessible and fundamental understanding of investing in startups, particularly from a relatable underdog for most readers. Calacanis even shares industry terminology which I have used in conversations with VCs and angels since reading the book. The book is substantive enough with insights that you can credibly court people from this world and seem like a knowledgeable insider, especially if you’re applying the concepts while simultaneously investing. I’ve found that having read this book while actively investing in cryptocurrencies and meeting with project teams added much value to my efforts and compounded my understanding of the concepts.

\n
",

titleIntroducing Hen Global: Become a Hen Global Citizen
bodyMy Story Like many people, I’ve always wanted a life of adventure. I would always read and hear about the extraordinary experiences and stories lived by others, yet wanted to have that for myself. What always struck me was how people who dared to act in risky and unconventional ways would be lionized after achieving success, yet most people not only would not dare to risk failure to achieve success, but they would often caution others against taking those kind of risks. I knew that given where I was, I needed to take extraordinary risks – with absolutely no guarantees of success – to have any real chance of having a far more interesting life. I wanted the kind of things that stimulate outside-the-box thinking, develop real confidence, and transforms one’s mind in a way that prepares the individual for life challenges on a high level; in other words, prepares one for greatness. These are the kind of things you don’t generally learn in school or from your community. Only you can make those choices and take those risks. Going Global “I’m going to Brazil in a month. Do you want to come along?” That’s what a good friend said to me at a Thai restaurant in DC where we were catching up while he was in town from California. I was 25 years old and had never been outside of the country without my family. I had a steady job and was able to carve out about a couple of weeks to make the trip. Little did I know then how pivotal that decision would be. That trip to Brazil, for many reasons I’ll discuss in future content, was a life changing decision. In the years since, I have been to over 50 countries, including living in Panama for several months, backpacking across South America for six months, and spending nearly three months in North Africa and the Middle East documenting the Arab Spring. I have truly lived up to the word that precedes my name, “international.” More importantly though, I have built great friendships with literally all kinds of people from all over the world and faced the kind of uncertainty and challenges that develops courage, confidence and toughness. These experiences have pushed me so far out of my comfort zone that I believe I can connect with just about anyone. Without having made the decision to embrace uncertain opportunities and take risks, I have achieved much more than I could have ever dreamed. I have experienced the things that I once believed were out of reach. One of my goals with my Hen Global brand is to share what I’ve learned with others and hopefully inspire at least one person to make positive and transformative changes in their life, whatever their goals might be. My Services I have worked remotely from all over the world offering consultancy Enterprise IT services for multinational companies, government agencies, and large private organizations. Recently, I have monetized a cryptocurrency investment consulting service for high net-worth individuals and businesses. In both spheres, I have developed subject matter expertise and have managed projects and portfolios worth millions of dollars. I am able to provide these services while being location independent. I want to teach others how to consolidate their lifestyle interests with their income. For me, travel and freedom over my time rank high, and I’ve managed to couple that with well-compensated work. You can have your cake and eat it, too! Advice My greatest piece of advice is to know your angle. Fail as much as possible as early and possible to learn what you like and, perhaps more importantly, what you don’t like. Double down on your strengths and outsource your weaknesses. Learn to pursue work that allows you to prioritize your lifestyle interests. This is not a zero-sum game. You don’t have to sacrifice freedom for a good income. If you know that changing your lifestyle and creating your own luck lies in your own hands, then visit my site Hen.Global and take that first step!
