This article discusses the challenges facing the banking industry via few examples. The good news is that there is no attempt to entirely replace banks with new technologies killing all intermediaries or third-parties in the value chain. Instead, we are going to explore __four ways__ in which a decentralized “blockless and chainless” computing architecture, the [HelixTangle](https://hlx.ai/helixtangle), can usher in a new era of banking.\n\n___1. Money Transfer without Banks___\nIn his book, _The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid_, C.K. Prahalad argues that both sides of the economic equation can prosper if companies revolutionize how they do business in developing countries. The World Bank estimates that [almost 1.7 Billion people do not have access to a bank account](https://globalfindex.worldbank.org/). However, a [study](https://hbswk.hbs.edu/item/mobile-banking-for-the-unbanked) from the Harvard Business School found that banks view serving these people as an ‘unprofitable proposition’. Telecom companies have primarily benefited from banks ceding this space, with their mobile money market and removing barriers of financial inclusion, Telcos have leveraged their peer-to-peer networks to serve millions of people who feel ‘left out’ of the financial system (Banking the Unbanked). As a result, banks are __playing catch-up__ to competitors beyond traditional finance.\n\nBanks have shied away from such consumers because they “cannot” manage their risk profile. Many consumers do not have clear identifying information, making it [difficult for banks to implement KYC practices](https://cointelegraph.com/news/how-blockchain-is-banking-the-unbanked). With new architectures like the HelixTangle, consumers can be __issued with a digital identity__, thereby putting in place a new reputation system that goes beyond a single score.\n\nIn addition, low-income individuals mostly need to make payments that are too small. They have no access to credit or debit cards because transaction fees make such payments impossible. Unlike existing distributed ledgers, the HelixTangle has virtually __no transaction fees__ and __makes micropayments possible__. Former Citigroup CEO Vikram Pandit predicts that [AI and robotics could cut the number of banking jobs by 30% over the next five years](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/business/news/fintech-technology-banking-jobs-30-per-cent-cut-replace-citigroup-ceo-vikram-pandit-a7944016.html). AI has led to the creation of __robo-advisors__: automated digital platforms that are capable of making better financial decisions than any human.\n\nRobo-advisors represent a new wave in FinTech and have had a substantial effect on the wealth management industry. How is that even possible? The answer is straightforward: a leadership that focuses on both the individualistic needs of each of its employees and on the group’s dynamic. \n\n_This might sound complicated, I know, but it is not._\n \nThere have been many approaches to leadership and management theories which have dramatically shifted in the last few years. 30 years ago, the one-size-fits-all management model was very effective, but nowadays in the context of globalization, practitioners and scholars are focusing on diversity management. Diversity in the workplace is often characterized in terms of ethnicity, gender, and/or age which implies a distinct understanding of the world, different cultures, beliefs, and values. \n\nBuilding a working mechanism from so many different pieces is something that Swiss watchmakers are known for, and making a business work as smoothly as a Swiss watch, a leader has to do exactly the same. Managers need to understand, that although hard to achieve, a working multicultural workplace comes with significant advantages and is worth the struggle. \n\nAccording to [Investopedia](https://www.investopedia.com/terms/m/multicultural-organization.asp), among the benefits of a multicultural organization are: a higher level of innovation, greater success in marketing, better distribution of opportunity, a broader perspective that might help identify and exploit new markets and customers. Having more perspectives can also help prevent the phenomenon of “group thinking”. From this, we can conclude that, even though challenging, the advantages of having a multicultural workspace exceed the side effects.\n\n___“Is it possible for an organization to be both high-morale and productive?”___\n \nThis question arose a long time ago, and if back then people were talking about its possibility, nowadays we talk about its necessity. Social responsibility is essential, and a good leader should be able to balance profit-making with activities that benefit society. \n\n_Business’s relationship to its society and environment is a critical factor in operating efficiently and effectively._\n\nIn the past, the lack of competition made business entitled; nowadays, considering the competition, firms have to be more assertive to their customers' needs. Taking into account that not only are employees more ethically and culturally diverse but customers too, adds yet another challenge for business owners.\n\nMoreover, the internet and social media have given the customer the tools to engage more in the “inside activities” of a business and at the same time the possibility to take actions against unethical behavior. (see [Nestlé boycott ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nestl%C3%A9_boycott)) \n\nAt the same time, the management literature focusing on employees has evolved from [Maslow's pyramid of needs](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslow%27s_hierarchy_of_needs) which implies that one needs more than just money to be pro-active. They need good social interactions, they need to be respected, understood and be part of something that matters.  \n\n_Working for the greater good, or at least for something that is significant to them, makes people work with passion, challenging them to give their best, which for a business translates into better productivity, which at the end of the day results in a higher profit._\n\nHelix provides an excellent case study for this article because it is a company that focuses on technological innovation and education, has a multicultural workforce and subsidiaries around the world and at the same time is consumer oriented.  \n\n_Helix’ employees are always eager to help each other to accomplish every single task._\n \nThe fact that the [team](https://hlx.ai/team) is very multicultural is both a challenge and a blessing, even though we come from different countries and have different backgrounds (cognitive scientists working with business majors) we work together as a team because we believe in the objective of the company which is to provide cognitive security and to educate the world about technology. Having the opportunity to shape the world is a motivator that makes us give 110% every single day.\n\n_“A friendly environment is not necessarily a productive one”._\n\nThis can’t be further from the truth; the fact that everybody enjoys coming to work is giving us the motivation we need to achieve every milestone. Every accomplishment is celebrated within our team, and that is why we wish to better ourselves every day.\n\n_“The market of cryptocurrencies is oversaturated” some might say, but when you know that you bring something new and better to the table, why not work really hard to offer a truly decentralized future?_\n\nThere are different levels of business morals and ways to elude being genuinely ethical or doing the right thing. In simple terms, ICOs are launched to introduce a new <a href=\"https://cointelegraph.com/bitcoin-for-beginners/what-are-cryptocurrencies#history\">cryptocurrency</a> into the market.The unprecedented rise of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin has seen numerous ICOs pop up. ICOs have become a fad, with many seeing them as a <strong>ticket to quick riches</strong>. People were excited by the surging price of cryptos while the market was going on a bull run. However, <strong>crypto market correction</strong> has made it clear that token value both rises and falls. The inherent value of a token is dependent on its <strong>merit and real-world value;</strong> it’s capability of sustaining in an ever-changing environment.ICOs offer enormous promise as a means of <strong>raising money outside of venture capital</strong>.
